AB - The plasma electrolytic oxidation process of Ti foil in the presence of a colloidal solution of Ag nanoparticles was used for the synthesis of exceptionally photocatalytically active Ag-doped TiO2 coatings. UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy was applied to follow the changes in the surface plasmon resonance band of the Ag nanoparticles as a function of the Ag:PO43− ratio in a phosphate-based electrolyte solution. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the size of the Ag nanoparticles in the range of 3–12 nm. The XRD patterns of the Ag-doped TiO2 coatings confirmed the crystalline anatase TiO2 phase regardless of the dopant concentration and without metallic Ag or crystalline Ag oxide forms. The typical porous morphology of the Ag–TiO2 coatings was observed by scanning electron microscopy. A significantly improved photocatalytic activity of the Ag–TiO2 coatings in the degradation process of the insecticide lindane (gamma isomer of benzene hexachloride) and test molecule methyl orange compared to pure TiO2 was determined using the GC technique. The degradation efficiency of Ag-doped TiO2 coatings is higher for lindane than for methyl orange.

AB - Growing mushrooms means meeting challenges while aiming for sustainability and circularity. Wherever the producer is located, commercial strains are the same originating from several producers. Customized strains adapted to local conditions are urgently needed. Before introducing new species to the strain development pipeline, the chemical characterization and biological activity of wild ones need to be assessed. Accordingly, the mycoceutical potential of five polypore mushroom species from Serbia was evaluated including: secondary metabolite composition, oxidative damage prevention, anti-tyrosinase, and anti-angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). The phenolic pattern was comparable in all samples, but the amounts of specific chemicals varied. Hydroxybenzoic acids were the primary components. All samples had varying quantities of ascorbic acid, carotene, and lycopene, and showed a pronounced inhibition of lipid peroxidation (LPx) and ability to scavenge HO•. Extracts were more potent tyrosinase inhibitors but unsuccessful when faced with ACE. Fomitopsis pinicola had the strongest anti-tumor efficacy while Ganoderma lucidum demonstrated strong selectivity in anti-tumor effect in comparison to normal cells. The evaluated species provided a solid foundation for commercial development while keeping local ecology in mind.

AB - The aim of this study was to find the chemical parameters for the differentiation of plum cultivars grown along the fjord areas of Western Norway and Eastern Norway, having specific agroclimatic conditions. Chemical analysis of the fruits confirmed the contents of 13 quantified elements, 22 sugar compounds, 11 organic acids, 19 phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity in 68 plum cultivars. Dominated contents were noted for nitrogen (with the maximum mean value of 3.11%), potassium (8055.80 mg/kg), and phosphorous (7878.88 mg/kg). Averagely, the highest level of sugars was determined for glucose (244.46 g/kg), fructose (197.92 g/kg), sucrose (208.25 g/kg), and sorbitol (98.02 g/kg), organic acids for malic acid (24.06 g/kg), and for polyphenol compounds were 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (66.31 mg/kg), and rutin (58.06 mg/kg). Applied principal component analysis has been useful for distinguishing the plum cultivars from three areas in Norway where copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, and sodium; sucrose, ribose, maltose, and raffinose; p-hydroxybenzoic acid, rutin, ferulic acid, kaempferol 7-O-glucoside, p-coumaric acid, and 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid were the most influential. In regard to human health and future breeding work that will have the aim to produce functional food with high health-related compounds, the plum cultivar ‘Mallard’ should be underlined due to the high level of elements, ‘Valor’ due to high sugar content, ‘Helgøyplomme’ due to content of organic acids, and ‘Diamond’ due to the content of phenolic compounds. © 2023 by the authors.

AB - Due to the interesting and potentially useful properties, phosphate tungsten bronzes are constantly being studied and attract a lot of attention. In the present work, two different metallic elements, belonging to the group of rare-earth metals, cerium and praseodymium, were used as a dopants for phosphate tungsten bronzes. Novel cerium and praseodymium doped phosphate tungsten bronzes were successfully synthesized and further characterized by thermal analyses, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy
with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The behavior of
cerium and praseodymium doped phosphate tungsten bronzes were examined in the Briggs-Rauscher oscillatory reaction. The changes in the oscillatory dynamics, caused by the addition of cerium doped and praseodymium doped phosphate tungsten bronzes, are used for distinction of these bronzes and also as a method for testing the catalytic features of the bronzes. Beside the nonlinear behavior, the bronzes have shown photoluminescence in the visible region (blue region).

AB - In this work, synthesized 12-tungstenphosphoric acid (H3PW12O40 × nH2O; PWA) was further ionically exchanged with Fe3+ ions, which led to the formation of the 12-tungstophosporic acid iron salt, (FePW12O40 × nH2O; Fe-PWA). Fe-PWA was then subjected to thermal analysis (TGA/DTA), determining the phase transition temperature of 576 °C from Fe-PWA to its corresponding phosphate tungsten bronze doped with iron, Fe-PWB. Using the X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) method, the obtained Fe-PWA and Fe-PWB were additionally characterized, and compared. Due to channels and cavities in their structures, Fe-PWA and Fe-PWB were next examined as electrode materials for aqueous rechargeable batteries. Electrochemical measurements were done in aqueous solutions of 6 M LiNO3 by cyclic voltammetry. Fe-PWA and Fe-PWB exhibit different redox processes, which are discussed thoroughly in this work. Electrochemical results are showing that within the Fe-PWA structure, more Li+ ions can be intercalated in the first discharge cycle, but consecutive cycling leads to a fast capacity fade. While the Fe-PWB redox process was stable during cycling, its specific capacity is limited by the material's poor electrical conductivity. Improvements in Fe-PWB conductivity must be addressed in future studies in order to boost material’s electrochemical performance.

AB - Growing mushrooms is meeting challenges while aiming for sustainability and circularity. Wherever the producer is located, commercial strains are the same originating from several producers. Following the harvest, enormous quantities of spent mushroom substrate containing spores are disposed presenting a type of foreign material pressure on the ecosystem in the form of the loss of genetic diversity in wild mushroom populations. This challenge can be mitigated by bioprospecting local strains and using them to generate commercial inoculum. Accordingly, the mycoceutical potential of five polypore mushroom species from Serbia was evaluated: secondary metabolite composition, oxidative damage prevention, anti-tyrosinase, and antiangiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) properties. Fomitopsis pinicola had the strongest anti-tumor efficacy while Ganoderma lucidum demonstrated strong selectivity in anti-tumor effect in comparison to healthy cells. The evaluated species provided a solid foundation for commercial development while keeping the local ecology in mind.

AB - Phosphate-tungsten bronzes (PWBs) constantly attract a lot of attention owing to their interesting chemical, mechanical, and optical properties. Furthermore, tungsten bronzes as inert inorganic solids, exhibit interesting and useful electronic properties when rare-earth ions are incorporated into their structure. Cerium doped phosphate-tungsten bronze (Ce-PWB) is obtained in the process of phase transformations of CePW12O40×6H2O (Ce-PWA) salt. The brown crystals of Ce-PWB are formed after heating of Ce-PWA in a furnace, in a temperature range from room temperature to 650 °C. In the present paper the luminescence properties of undoped PWB and Ce-PWB are analyzed and compared. Regarding the characterized luminescence properties of PWB and Ce-PWB, only PWB matrix showed luminescence, while dopant Ce3+ had no significant influence on the change of the emission spectra with characteristic spectra for this ion. The obtained CIE chromaticity diagrams showed that both samples emit in the deep blue region, suggesting their possible use as a blue emitting source for white light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

AB - The investigation of laser beam irradiation on different types of butterfly wings has been done previously by using the holographic method. The deformations due to the use of different laser wavelengths were observed. It is well-known that chitin is an abundant component of many complex structures in biological samples, such as butterfly wings. Consequently, as the influence of the chemical structure was taken into account, it was decided to examine the influence of chitin itself in laser-induced deformation in biological samples. Therefore, in this work, the same tests were performed on the film generated from chitin by using different wavelengths of laser. The results obtained strongly suggest that there are no effects of laser beam irradiation on chitin, indicating that chitin itself does not have an influence on the observed deformation of the butterfly wings. It was decided to make some additional measurements of such wings, which would be
important for the further course of research in this direction. Some useful graphs were obtained by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements of particular butterfly wings. The obtained results contribute to a better knowledge of the structure and morphology and may have applications in the industry of artificial materials, especially polymers.

AB - Phosphate tungsten bronzes (PWBs), due to their intriguing and potentially valuable properties, have consistently garnered research attention [1]. In this study, we introduced two rare-earth metallic elements, namely cerium and praseodymium, as dopants for PWBs. This led to the successful synthesis of novel PWBs doped with cerium and praseodymium, which were subsequently subjected to various characterization techniques, including thermal analyses (TA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX), and hotoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The behavior of cerium and praseodymium doped phosphate tungsten bronzes (Ce-PWB and Pr-PWB) [2], was investigated in the Briggs-Rauscher (BR) oscillatory reaction. The
alterations in the oscillatory dynamics, brought about by the incorporation of cerium and praseodymium dopants, served as a means to distinguish between these bronzes. Additionally, this approach provided a method for assessing the catalytic properties of the bronzes. Apart from their nonlinear behavior, these bronzes also exhibited photoluminescence in the visible spectrum, specifically in the blue region.

AB - Thermal monitoring of a Briggs-Rauscher oscillatory reaction with a phase transition or the state I (low concentration of iodide and iodine) to the state II (high concentration of iodide and iodine) transition with formation of new solid iodine phase is presented. This is the very first time that an oscillatory reaction and the state I to state II transition have been monitored using a thermal camera. It should be pointed out, that the BR reaction solution is not homogenized by stirring, and that only oxygen production influence the solution mixing. Therefore, the analysis was done at three sampling points on the cuvette where temperature change over time was observed, and compared with average temperature distribution. The first point is chosen to correspond to the top of the solution in the cuvette, followed by one in the middle of the volume and one at the very bottom of the cuvette. Although the state I to the state II transition itself is not reproducible (investigated transition exhibits crazy clock behavior), the overall temperature pattern has shown a reproducible character.

warming but also due to technological advances, cost reductions, increased battery charging capabilities,
etc. In order to achieve the most outstanding possible efficiency of the vehicle, the thermal
management system of electric vehicles must be efficient throughout the year. One of the problems
is that the temperature distribution in the induction motor is not uniform, so that local overheating
can occur. Thermoelectric materials make it possible to convert a temperature gradient into electrical
energy. The material properties of the motor impose a temperature limit. This paper will describe
the materials used for TEE and their impact on the efficiency of electric vehicles. A thermal

vehicle, as well as problems that may occur during operation. Convective heat transfer plays an important
role in better performance in battery cell development. In particular, the effect of temperature
has a significant impact on the behaviour of the battery during acceleration and regenerative
braking events. This paper investigates the temperature distribution inside the battery.

AB - The corrugation of the structure is a special property of the material that has a great influence on almost all other characteristics of the same. The connection between materials based on the corrugation of natural structures such as Apatura butterfly wings and its examination (the six samples of same species) by the method of holographic interferometry (with four different wavelengths of laser radiation) is presented in this paper. The concept of material's corrugation elasticity is presented as well as the advantages of this concept. The holographic method was implemented as appropriate for monitoring the structure dynamics at the nanoscale. Finally, the important factor that impacts the elasticity of the corrugation of the material lies in the optical factors of the environment is emphasized, i.e., in the light of laser radiation that structure interferes with. A completely non-linear dependence on the wavelengths of light is shown, where for wavelengths of 532 nm and 660 nm the elasticity of the corrugation is observed, while for 450 nm and 980 nm a plastic deformation of the corrugation is observed. These preliminary studies open new possibilities in the synthesis and testing of different materials and monitoring of their dynamics in real time.

AB - Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a brain disease leading to significant functional impairments and premature death, and it affects 20 million people worldwide. Due to the complexity of this disease including different genetic and environmental factors, there is a lack in understanding pathophysiology and diagnosis of schizophrenia. In order to overcome existing gaps, the establishment of a universal set of SCZ biomarkers has a crucial role. Metabonomic study of serum samples of Serbian patients with schizophrenia (51) and healthy controls (39) by 1H-NMR analyses associated with chemometrics, provided the identification of 26 metabolites/biomarkers for this disorder. The biomarker set including aspartate/aspartic acid, lysine, 2-hydroxybutyric acid, and acylglycerols was established for the first-time in SCZ serum samples of Serbian patients by 1H-NMR experiments. The other 22 identified metabolites are in agreement with the previously confirmed NMR-based serum biomarker sets of Brazilian and/or Chinese patient samples. The same 13 metabolites (lactate/lactic acid, threonine, leucine, isoleucine, valine, glutamine, asparagine, alanine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, choline, glucose, glycine and tyrosine) were established in all SCZ samples from three countries of different ethnicity and geographical origins (Serbia, Brazil and China). These results emphasize the crucial role in the possibility of their application as biomarkers for diagnosis of SCZ, reliable monitoring of treatment response and clinical outcomes.

AB - Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mental disorder that causes alteration of mood states including mania, depression, and euthymia and it is ranked as one of the leading causes of disability and premature mortality, with a prevalence of 60 million people worldwide. BD is a heterogenous illness including diverse genetic, environmental, and biochemical factors and its pathophysiology is still largely unknown. Diagnosis of BD exclusively depends on the subjective recognition of symptoms without any objective methods such as a clinical test of biomarker identification, instigating misdiagnosis, inadequate treatments and deficient clinical outcomes. 1H-NMR-based serum metabolomics of Serbian patients with BD (33) and healthy controls (39) contributed to identification of 22 metabolites for this disease. Threonine, aspartate, gamma-aminobutyric acid, 2-hydroxybutyric acid, serine, and mannose make a unique biomarker set, and were confirmed for the first time in BD Serbian serum samples. Additional six identified metabolites (3-hydroxybutyric acid, arginine, lysine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and glycerol) are in accordance with the previously determined NMR-based sets of serum BD biomarkers in Brazilian and/or Chinese patient samples, while nine identified metabolites (lactate, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, glutamine, glutamate, glucose, and choline) are the same established biomarkers in three different ethnic and geographic origins (Serbia, Brazil, and China). The same confirmed metabolites are an indicator of the right path in discovery of the universal set of BD biomarkers by NMR.

AB - Thermo-chemical conversion via the pyrolysis of cigarette butt (CB) filters was successfully valorized and upcycled in the pre-carbonization and carbonization stages. The pre-carbonization stage (devolatilization) of the precursor material (cellulose acetate filter, r-CAcF) was analyzed by micro-scale experiments under non-isothermal conditions using TG-DTG-DTA and DSC techniques. The results of a detailed kinetic study showed that the decomposition of r-CAcF takes place via complex mechanisms, including consecutive reaction steps and two single-step reactions. Consecutive stages include the α-transition referred to as a cellulose polymorphic transformation (cellulose I → II) through crystallization mechanism changes, where a more thermodynamically ordered system was obtained. It was found that the transformation rate of cellulose I → II (‘cellulose regeneration’) is strongly affected by the presence of alkali metals and the deacetylation process. Two single-step reactions showed significant overlapping behavior, which involves a nucleation-controlled scission mechanism (producing levoglucosan, gaseous products, and abundant radicals) and hydrolytic decomposition of cellulose by catalytic cleavage of glycosidic bonds with the presence of an acidic catalyst. A macro-scale experiment showed that the operating temperature and heating rate had the most notable effects on the total surface area of the manufactured carbon. A substantial degree of mesoporosity with a median pore radius of 3.1695 nm was identified. The presence of macroporosity on the carbon surface and acidic surface functional groups was observed.

The effects of zeolite concentration regarding pure PMAA xerogel, for all of the investigated properties (primary structural parameters, morphological properties, water swelling ability, thermal degradation mechanism and stability, and mechanical properties) were determined and discussed. The PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels had remarkably higher density than PMAA xerogel (1660/1420 kg m−3), higher crosslinking density (29/1.0 × 10−4), improved mechanics in the dry and swollen state (up to 4.9 times higher storage modulus) and lower swelling degree (42/420 g g−1), average molar mass between the network crosslinks (3.6/110 × 104 g mol−1), and distance between the macromolecular chains (64/710 nm). Despite high zeolite concentration, the composites kept porous hydrogel structure with uniformly dispersed zeolite particles. FTIR spectra disclosed the existence of functional groups of PMAA network and MFI zeolite that interacted mutually and led to increased crosslinking density. The effect of zeolite concentration on the thermal degradation mechanism was established. The composition-properties correlations were determined and described by the adequate linear or power law equations revealing the additive nature of the composites and the fractal structure of the networks. These correlations enable the achievement of desired properties by simple adjustment of the initial composition, i.e. zeolite concentration. Therefore, this work presents the base for further development of tailor-made PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels aimed for specific application.

AB - Heat exchangers used in agricultural processes are mainly manufactured by three technologies: brazed copper-brass, mechanically assembled aluminum and brazed aluminum. The appropriate choice depends on various criteria: price, weight, corrosion resistance, performance in a limited volume, required pressure drops, temperature resistance, reliability, etc. Brazed aluminum is increasingly popular due to several advantages, such as resistance to high pressure and temperatures. Aluminum heat exchangers can be exposed to external and internal corrosion in various environmental conditions. Corrosion has a negative impact on the mechanical integrity and thermal performance of heat exchangers. Therefore, specific operating design parameters, as well as mechanical design characteristics, are of great importance for consideration in construction. Proper selection and design can ensure the successful and safe operation of the heat exchanger and the plant itself. The HVAC industry is directed towards the search for the best solutions in order to increase the performance, energy efficiency and durability of the equipment while reducing the costs of their production. Aluminum pipes and other aluminum components are increasingly replacing copper pipes. In this paper, application, design, assembling process and operation considerations for brazed aluminum heat exchangers used for needs in agricultural processes have presented.

AB - The main objective of this study is to determine the possibility of predicting the impact of land use and soil type on concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) and phthalates (PAEs) in soil based on an artificial neural network model (ANN). Qualitative analysis of HMs was performed with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES) and Direct Mercury Analyzer. Determination of PAEs was performed with gas chromatography (GC) coupled with a single quadrupole mass spectrometry (MS). An ANN, based on the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) iterative algorithm, for the prediction of HM and PAE concentrations, based on land use and soil type parameters, showed good prediction capabilities (the coefficient of determination (r(2)) values during the training cycle for HM concentration variables were 0.895, 0.927, 0.885, 0.813, 0.883, 0.917, 0.931, and 0.883, respectively, and for PAEs, the concentration variables were 0.950, 0.974, 0.958, 0.974, and 0.943, respectively). The results of this study indicate that HM and PAE concentrations, based on land use and soil type, can be predicted using ANN.

AB - This research investigated a Balkan endemic species, Achillea clypeolata, collected from two locations (Dobrostan and Ivaylovgrad) in Bulgaria and two locations (Ozren and Rtanj) in Serbia. The goal was to compare the essential oil (EO) of A. clypeolata from these four localities. The EO was isolated from dry aboveground plant parts by hydrodistillation, and the identification of the EO constituents was carried out by GC-MS analyses. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), correlation analysis, and an unrooted cluster tree were used to define distinctions in the presence of volatile compounds in A. clypeolata EO. Results showed that A. clypeolata of Serbian origin (Ozren and Rtanj) contained 1,8-cineole as the main constituent, and belonged to the previously described 1,8-cineole as a dominant compound in the EO profile. On the other hand, the results from Bulgaria show an evident chemical diversification within the A. clypeolata species, as 1,8-cineole (23.2%), camphor (5.0%) and borneol (8.9%) prevailed in the EO of the studied samples collected from Ivaylovgrad, while borneol (22.6%), β-eudesmol (12.7%) and elemol (7.8%) were the main ones in the EO from Dobrostan. In sillico analysis revealed the high anti-inflammatory potential of A. clypeolata, which may be highly diverse depending on the population and active compounds it contains.

AB - The Lipidomic profiles of serum samples from patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and healthy controls (C) were explored and compared. The sample cohort included 31 BD patients and 31 control individuals. An untargeted lipidomics study applying liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was conducted to achieve the lipid profiles. Multivariate statistical analyses (principal component analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis) were performed, and fifty-six differential lipids were confirmed in BD and controls. Our results pointed to alterations in lipid metabolism, including pathways of glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, glycerolipids, and sterol lipids, in BD patient sera. This study emphasized the role of lipid pathways in BD, and comprehensive research using the LC-HRMS platform is necessary for future application in the diagnosis and improvement of BD treatments.

AB - Bipolar disorder (BD) is a brain disorder that causes changes in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function. It has a prevalence of 60 million people worldwide, and it is among the top 20 diseases with the highest global burden. The complexity of this disease, including diverse genetic, environmental, and biochemical factors, and diagnoses based on the subjective recognition of symptoms without any clinical test of biomarker identification create significant difficulties in understanding and diagnosing BD. A 1H-NMR-based metabolomic study applying chemometrics of serum samples of Serbian patients with BD (33) and healthy controls (39) was explored, providing the identification of 22 metabolites for this disease. A biomarker set including threonine, aspartate, gamma-aminobutyric acid, 2-hydroxybutyric acid, serine, and mannose was established for the first time in BD serum samples by an NMR-based metabolomics study. Six identified metabolites (3-hydroxybutyric acid, arginine, lysine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and glycerol) are in agreement with the previously determined NMR-based sets of serum biomarkers in Brazilian and/or Chinese patient samples. The same established metabolites (lactate, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, glutamine, glutamate, glucose, and choline) in three different ethnic and geographic origins (Serbia, Brazil, and China) might have a crucial role in the realization of a universal set of NMR biomarkers for BD.

The same established metabolites (lactate, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, glutamine, glutamate, glucose, and choline) in three different ethnic and geographic origins (Serbia, Brazil, and China) might have a crucial role in the realization of a universal set of NMR biomarkers for BD.",
