AB - A series of nine 5-(4-substituted phenylazo)-3-amido-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridones were synthesized and characterized by FT–IR, 1H and 13C NMR, UV–Vis, and PL spectroscopy. Photophysical properties of the dyes were examined in solvents of various polarities and at different pH values. The solvent effects on the absorbance and emission spectral shift were analyzed using Lippert–Mataga, Reichardt–Dimroth and Kamlet-Taft equations. Moreover, UV–Vis absorption and emission frequencies were correlated with Hammett substituent constants applying the linear free energy relationships. DFT calculations of the investigated dyes were accomplished to determine their structural and electronic properties.

AB - Under normal conditions, titanium dioxide does not absorb visible light photons due to large band gap. Nevertheless, when titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are surface-modified with thiosalicylic acid (TSA), their optical properties are altered owing to the formation of charge transfer complex that initiates absorption in the visible spectral range. Colloidal and sol-gel techniques were used to synthesize uniform TiO2 NPs of different sizes (average diameters in the range 4-15 nm), and effects of their subsequent modification by TSA molecules were compared with effect of modification of commercial Degussa TiO2 powder. Thorough microstructural characterization of TiO2 nanoparticulates was performed including transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, as well as nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. Optical measurements revealed that all surface-modified TiO2 samples with TSA have similar spectral features independent of their morphological differences, and, more importantly, absorption onset of modified TiO2 samples was found to be red-shifted by 1.0 eV compared to the unmodified ones. The mode of binding between TSA and surface Ti atoms was analyzed by infrared spectroscopy. Finally, the quantum chemical calculations, based on density functional theory, were performed to support optical characterization of surface-modified TiO2 with TSA.

AB - Na/K-ATPase is emerging as an important target for a variety of anticancer metal-based drugs. The interactions of Na/K-ATPase (in its E1 state) with three representative and structurally related cytotoxic gold(III) complexes, i.e. [Au(bipy)(OH)(2)][PF6], bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; [Au(py(dmb)-H)(CH3COO)(2)], py(dmb)-H = deprotonated 6-(1,1-dimethylbenzyl)-pyridine and [Au(bipy(dmb)-H)(OH)][PF6], bipy(c)-H = deprotonated 6-(1,1-dimethylbenzyl)-2,20-bipyridine, are investigated here in depth using a variety of spectroscopic methods, in combination with docking studies. Detailed information is gained on the conformational and structural changes experienced by the enzyme upon binding of these gold(III) complexes. The quenching constants of intrinsic enzyme fluorescence, the fraction of Trp residues accessible to gold(III) complexes and the reaction stoichiometries were determined in various cases. Specific hypotheses are made concerning the binding mode of these gold(III) complexes to the enzyme and the likely binding sites. Differences in their binding behaviour toward Na/K-ATPase are explained on the ground of their distinctive structural features. The present results offer further support to the view that Na/K-ATPase may be a relevant biomolecular target for cytotoxic gold(III) compounds of medicinal interest and may thus be involved in their overall mode of action.

AB - TiO2 powders with different specific surface area were prepared using reproducible, sol gel synthetic route and their ability to form hybrids with catechol and 5-amino salicylic acid was compared with the commercially available Degussa P25 TiO2 powder. Microstructural characterization involving transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms indicated that TiO2 samples cover reasonably wide size and/or specific surface area range (50-115 m(2)/g). The surface modification of TiO2 powders with catechol and 5-amino salicylic acid induced significant shift of absorption to the visible spectral region due to charge transfer complex formation. It should be emphasized that tunable optical properties of TiO2 in powder form have never been reported in the literature. The largest red shift of the absorption onset was observed for sample with the largest specific surface area upon surface modification with both ligands. The binding of the modifier molecules to the surface Ti atoms was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

AB - In this paper, results of structural modification of fullerene thin films by single and multiple charged boron ions (B+, B3+) are presented. The applied ion energies were in the range of 15–45 keV. The characterization of as-deposited and irradiated specimens has been performed by atomic force microscopy, Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV/vis spectrophotometry. The results of Raman analysis have shown the formation of amorphous layer after irradiation of fullerene thin films. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has confirmed the formation of new B–C bonds in irradiated films at higher fluences (2 × 1016 cm−2). The morphology of bombarded films has been changed significantly. The optical band gap was found to be reduced from 1.7 to 1.06 eV for irradiated films by B3+ ions and 0.7 eV for irradiated films by B+ ions.

AB - In this paper, the results of structural modification of fullerene thin films bombarded by highly charged iron ions (Fe6+) have been presented. The properties of as-deposited and irradiated fullerene thin films have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectrophotometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Results of Raman spectroscopy have indicated structural changes of irradiated thin films depending on fluences. It was found that iron doped fullerene films are dominated by sp3 rather than sp2 bonds after bombardment which might be due to formation of nano-diamond structures. AFM analysis showed that ion beam had destroyed the surface ordering. The optical band gap was found to be in the range of 0.6 to 1.4 eV for irradiated films by Fe6+ ions at the highest fluences.

AB - Nanoparticles have several advantages over the microparticles in interactions of thebiomaterial with the organism. The response of the organism depends on the interaction of thebiomaterial with the surrounding tissue and its adhesion to cells. Besides composition andmorphology, the size and size distribution of the composite particles plays a key role in thesephenomena. This paper shows possibilities of synthesizing composite biomaterials calciumphosphate/poly-(dl-lactide-co-glycolide) (CP/DLPLG) formed as nanoparticles (NPs) powders. Each CP nanoparticle was coated with amorphous DLPLG polymer. In dispersion, particles canbe deagglomerated by ultrasound treatment. The size distribution of calcium phosphate coated with poly-(dl-lactide-co-glycolide)(CP/DLPLG) was obtained by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Agglomerate of CP/DLPLG wasinvestigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) before and after ultrasound treatment. Results obtained at different time of ultrasound treatment showed a significantinfluence of ultrasound treatment on deagglomeration of powder CP/DLPLG. Fine particlefractions were found to increase time of ultrasound treatment from 30 to 120 minutes.

Osobine deponovanih i ozračenih fulerenskih slojeva su proučavane pomoću mikroskopa atomske snage (AFM), Ramanovom i Furijeovom infracrvenom spektroskopijom (FTIR) i UV/VIS spektrometrijom.

AB - We investigated the effect of γ-irradiation on the cytotoxicity of pure C 60 solubilized in water by using tetrahydrofuran (THF/n-C 60 or THF/n-C 60 ). In contrast to THF/n-C 60 , its γ-irradiated counterpart failed to generate oxygen radicals and cause extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-dependent necrotic cell death in various types of mammalian cells. Moreover, γ-irradiated THF/n-C 60 protected cells from the oxidative stress induced by native THF/n-C 60 or hydrogen peroxide. The observed biological effects were associated with γ-irradiation-mediated decomposition of THF and subsequent derivatization of the n-C 60 surface. These results for the first time demonstrate γ-irradiation-mediated changes in the physico-chemical properties of THF-prepared nanocrystalline C 60 , resulting in a complete loss of its cytotoxic effect and its conversion to a cytoprotective agent.

AB - Photoacoustic frequency heat‐transmission technique is used to study thermal and carrier transport properties in low‐doped silicon wafers. Amplitude and phase photoacoustic signals as a function of modulation frequency of incident optical beam are measured using different experimental conditions. The thermal diffusivity, coefficient of excess carrier diffusion, carrier lifetime, and the surface recombination velocity were determined by comparing experimental results and calculated theoretical photoacoustic signals. The suitability of the photoacoustic frequency heat‐transmission technique as a contactless diagnostic method is assessed in comparison with the more conventional photothermal deflection and photothermal modulated reflection techniques.

AB - Photoacoustic (PA) heat-transmission measurements were used to study transport in a nearly intrinsic Ge single crystal. A theoretical model was developed which quantitatively describes excess carrier and thermal-wave space distributions, within the semiconductor under monochromatic cw modulated excitation. The PA heat-transmission, reflection, and photothermal-beam-deflection signals can be calculated using this model. It is shown that the frequency characteristic of the measurement system can be eliminated using measurements on different thicknesses of the same sample. It is also shown that both the normalized phase and amplitude spectra, as a function of the modulation frequency, can be used to determine the values of the thermal diffusivity, the excess-carrier lifetime, and the surface recombination velocity.

AB - In this work the possibility of simultaneous determination of thermal and transport properties of thin films using a photoacoustic method was investigated. The properties of amorphous GeSe thin films, which were evaporated on quartz substrata, were examined by measuring their amplitude and phase photoacoustic spectra as a function of the modulated optical laser beam frequency. The measurements were performed in a specially constructed photoacoustic cell which enabled excitation of the sample on one side and detection of the acoustic response on the other. Thermal diffusivity and transport properties (diffusivity coefficient, recombination time, and the surface recombination velocity) of the GeSe thin films were determined by comparing of the experimental results and the calculated theoretical photoacoustic spectra.
