AB - Leachate samples were collected during the one year monitoring campaign, on municipal solid waste landfill in Novi Sad, Serbia. Determination of T, pH, EC, DO, BOD5, COD, NO2-N, NO3-N, NH4-N, Tot N, Tot P, B, SO4 2-, KMnO4, and cations of metals (Ca, Mg, Na, K, B, Cr, Ni, Zn, Fe, Cd, Pb and Al) was performed in order to evaluate the leachate pollution index (LPI) (Kumar and Alapat 2005). Due to the obtained values, only 7 parameters (pH, total dissolved solids, BOD5, COD, iron, zinc, and lead) were used for the purpose of calculation of LPI, which resulted in the reduced value of total pollution index. The obtained LPI value was 6,87 and was lower than value obtained within the previous study from the similar landfill site in Croatia (8,53) (Matešić et al., 2016). In addition the obtained LPI value is lower than 35 which indicates the low potential of contamination, as well as the relatively constant quality status of the leachate on landfill site in Novi Sad. The future monitoring programs should include all 18 prescribed parameters for LPI evaluation in order to obtain the overall value of the contamination index.

AB - Leachate is produced through complex chemical reactions, infiltration of the atmospheric water in the landfill body and the water contained in the waste, as well as through dissolution of waste pollutants. Due to its toxic composition, leachate pollutes soil and groundwater. It is very difficult to foresee real composition of landfill leachate due to dynamics of the processes occurring in the landfill body and the impact of a large number of variable factors. Qualitative composition of the leachate is characterized by pollutants that can be classified into four groups - soluble organic components, inorganic macrocomponents, heavy metals and xenobiotic organic compounds. The main objective of the conducted research was determination of the quality and organic profile of the leachate collected at non-sanitary municipal solid waste landfill in Novi Sad, by performing a screening analysis using GC-MS device.

AB - Leachate is produced by dissolving of various substances in water inside the landfill body. Contaminated leachate water can infiltrate into ground water and surrounding soil, causing significant water and soil pollution problems. Depending on the type of waste, presence of polluting
substances is the result of chemical and biological reactions within the landfill body. The analysis of
the leachate was carried out on two municipal solid waste landfills in Vojvodina region, Serbia, nonsanitary (L1) and sanitary (L2). The aim of the paper is to determine the basic physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of water and to conduct screening analysis of the collected samples in order to determine the quality of leachate from both landfill sites and to conduct screening analyzes of the collected samples for the purpose of identifying the pharmaceuticals.

AB - A total of 138 samples of canned tuna, sardines and mackerel from the Serbian market were analyzed for toxic (As, Cd, Pb, Hg) element levels using ICPMS. The highest average contents of toxic elements were found to be 1.70 mg kg(-1) for arsenic and 0.026 mg kg(-1) for cadmium in sardine and 0.068 mg kg(-1) for mercury in tuna. The lead content was very similar (similar to 0.048 mg kg(-1)) of the three types of canned fish. None of the fish analyzed contained toxic elements in levels exceeding the maximum allowable levels currently in force. Human health risk assessment of As, Cd, Pb and Hg in canned fish were investigated. A risk assessment based on the measured levels of examined elements indicated that consumption of canned fish according to current eating habits in Serbia presents little risk to human health since the carcinogenic risk is within the acceptable range, 10(-4)-10(-6).

AB - There are two possible cases concerning non-sanitary municipal solid waste landfills due to failure to meet requirements with respect to impermeability and thickness of geological barrier as well as absence of implementation and use of a waste and leachate management system, and also depending on type and the mineral composition of the geological barrier. In the first case, impermeable clay, kaolinite, is prevailing in the composition of the geological barrier the final outcome of which is the spillage of leachate into the volume of the deposited waste, as well as its outbreak on the surface of the landfill site. In the second case, permeable clay, smectite, is prevailing in the composition of geological barrier with dominant leachate infiltration into the ground flow. In accordance with the first case, using STAN software the substance flow analysis (SFA) was carried out, of cadmium primarily, within three scenarios. Efficacy of remediation of the landfill site soil contaminated with leachate from the aspect of heavy metal reduction, focused primarily on cadmium, using in-situ and ex-situ systems, was presented within Scenario 1 and Scenario 2. Possibility and efficacy of direct treatment of leachate in a corresponding plant for its processing, in case of implementing and using the leachate management system, was presented within Scenario 3. Efficacy of cadmium flow reduction accomplished within Scenario 1, Scenario 2 and Scenario 3 amounts to 99.04 %, 55 % and 99.2 %, respectively. Prevention of landfill site contamination with leachate using the system of its management is an optimum option and a desirable practice, while in the case of the already existing contamination of the landfill site and its immediate environment, using in-situ system of landfill site soil remediation, based on achieved results, high efficacy was achieved contrary to use of the ex-situ system.
Efikasnost redukcije toka kadmijuma ostvarena u okviru Scenarija 1 iznosi 99.04 %, u okviru Scenarija 2 iznosi 55 %, dok u okviru Scenarija 3 iznosi 99.2 %, respektivno. Prevencija kontaminacije deponijskog lokaliteta procednim vodama primenom sistema za upravljanje istim predstavlja optimalnu opciju i poželjnu praksu, dok u slučaju već postojeće kontaminacije deponijskog lokaliteta i neposredne okoline, primenom in-situ sistema remedijacije zemljišta deponijskog lokaliteta, na osnovu dobijenih rezultata, ostvaruje se visoka efikasnost, nasuprot primeni ex-situ sistema.

AB - The paper presents the results of the treatment of landfill leachate by applying the method of phytoremediation using hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). The leachate was sampled from the Municipal Landfill in Novi Sad, while the common water hyacinth was purchased from the Nursery of flowers and conifers in Ugrinovci. During the research, we monitored the removal efficiency of four heavy metals, i.e., chromium, cadmium, nickel and zinc. Despite the presence and the metabolic processes of Hirudinea, as well as the accelerated degradation of the applied biomass, significant removal of heavy metals from the treated leachate has been achieved. After completion of the experiment, it was concluded that the removal efficiency of chromium is 81%, cadmium 80%, nickel 62% and zinc 80%

AB - The occurrence of different toxic organic and inorganic contaminants in water is an environmental issue that must be addressed to avoid damage to ecosystems and human health. Inspired by this current issue, in this work, we have fabricated multifunctional biochar and activated carbons capable for highly efficient capture, identification and removal of toxic metals, radionuclides, emerging, priority and hazardous priority substances from water samples. To find facile, eco friendly and cost-effective routes for developing multifunctional materials, which have the capability to resolve many of the challenges associated with wastewater problem, here, we report:
 The novel design and synthesis details of multifunctional biochar and
activated carbons which precursors were lignocellulosic raw materials
(sweet/sour cherry, apricot and plum kernels) as fruit processing industry
waste [1];
 Characterization of multifunctional materials performed by elemental
analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy-dispersive X-ray
Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Brunauer,
Emmett and Taller technique [2];
 Detailed evaluation of their capability for highly efficient separation of heavy
metals ions (Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+), chlorophenols, pharmaceutical compounds
(sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine, diclofenac, naproxen, ketoprofen and
ibuprofen) and radionuclides;
 The batch studies performed by varying different process conditions: the
initial pH of the water solution, adsorbent dosage, contact time, temperature
and initial adsorbate concentrations;
 The time dependant adsorption results fitted to four diffusion and four
reaction kinetic models;
Equilibrium data fitted to three isotherm models (for better insight into the
adsorption process);
 Calculated thermodynamic parameters of the process: Gibbs energy,
enthalpy and entropy;
 The best conditions for achieving maximum efficiency of biochar, a carbonrich
low-cost by-product of naturally abundant waste biomass, which
exhibits heterogeneous surface chemistry and strong binding affinity via
oxygen-containing group on the surface [3];
 Desorption and regeneration study results;
 Two-stage CSTR reactor design for the real samples treatment;
 Eco-design of the multifunctional materials production process [4];
 Life cycle assessment, comparative adsorption study and cost analysis of
the process [4].
Performed study showed encouraging results that are highly beneficial for the development of alternative wastewater management technologies, as well as for modern organic waste disposal solution. Fabricated multifunctional biochar and activated carbons were found to be a promising low-cost and eco-friendly solution for the removal of wide range of micropollutants from aqueous waste as part of sustainable technology involving slurry reactors.

AB - Water is one of the most precious natural resources. The downtrend in the quality of lake water and pollution with heavy metals cause serious threats to the environment in last decades. Particularly vulnerable are the lakes that are located near towns and villages. The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical parameters and levels of macro– and microelements in order to determine the water quality of Lake Gruža in the summer period. The results showed that the studied parameters were within the permissible levels, except of concentrations of iron, cobalt and vanadium.

AB - BACKGROUND: Bee pollen has already proved to be a good supplement rich in iron and zinc. Studies on the application of flower pollen in the food industry and medicine have begun. Bearing in mind the prevalence of maize as a crop culture, its pollen will be easily available. The mineral composition of pollen of seven Serbian maize hybrids was analyzed in order to establish its nutritional value and the benefits of its implementation in the human diet using the inductively coupled plasma method. RESULTSThe presence of twenty four different macro- (nine) and micronutrients (fifteen) was detected. The most common minerals were phosphorus and potassium, while arsenic, cobalt, lead, nickel and molybdenum were found in some samples. CONCLUSIONComparing the results obtained with recommended or tolerable dietary intake references for adults, it was found that maize pollen can be used as a very good source of zinc, iron, chromium and manganese for humans. With regard to selenium content, pollen samples proved to be moderately good source of this important micronutrient. Contents of some elements (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr, Se, Al and V) showed significant differences depending on hybrid type. In some samples increased concentrations of aluminum and vanadium were recorded, which may pose a potential problem due to their toxicity.

AB - The aim of this study was to evaluate the content of trace elements and physicochemical properties of water samples in the territories of southern Banat and Zemun (Serbia). The contents of twenty-two macro- and microelements were determined using ICP analysis. Prior to this, the typical parameters were evaluated using standard analytical methods. The contents of elements in all studied samples were within the maximum allowed concentrations established by national regulations on the water quality for human use of examined elements, except for Na, Fe, B, Mn, As and Co. The most of elevated metal concentrations were recorded in the samples from Zrenjanin area, with special emphasis on increased concentrations of arsenic. Besides, the higher concentrations of iron and manganese were found in samples S03 and S04, respectively. The increased concentrations of iron, arsenic and manganese in the samples from southern Banat area could be explained by the presence and reductive dissolution of some iron minerals in the subsurface which could contain As or Mn as trace elements. Increased concentration of boron could be the consequence of its leaching from ground caused by the adequate pH value. The obtained results indicate that geology of terrain might be the main cause of elevated concentrations of iron, boron, arsenic and manganese in the study region. Potential human weekly and long-term health risk was determined and expressed through exposure risk assessment. It has been found that only arsenic in sample S07 represents a great weekly risk. On the long-term basis, consumption of waters with elevated concentrations of boron/S05-08/ and manganese/S04, S07 and S08/ can be considered as high health risk. Our study indicates that both risk assessments need to be done, in order to better understand the real risk of increased concentrations of harmful elements on human health.

AB - In this study secondary lipid oxidation products of oil in white mustard seeds were analysed. Ground white mustard seeds were extracted by solvent extraction and the extract was analysed by gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric instrumental analysis. (Semi)volatile compounds different from fatty acids represented less than 1% of all compounds present in the extract. Except from the naturally occurring flavour and aroma compounds, a whole series of saturated and unsaturated aldehydes with 1 or 2 double bonds was identified in the extract. It was shown that most of them can be useful indicators of lipid oxidation in white mustard seeds. Additionally, it was shown that these unsaturated aldehydes, when present in high concentrations, can be indicators of an early stage of lipid oxidation in this plant.

AB - Sinalbin degradation products in mild yellow mustard paste were investigated. The analyzed material consisted of a mild yellow mustard paste condiment and ground white mustard seeds which were originally used in the mustard paste production process. The samples were extracted in a Soxhlet extraction system and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique. The only sinalbin degradation product in ground mustard seeds was 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetonitrile. The most abundant sinalbin degradation product in yellow mustard paste was 4-(hydroxymethyl)phenol. Other compounds identified in this sample were: 4-methyl phenol, 4-ethyl phenol, 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)phenol and 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethanoic acid.

AB - Serum amyloid A proteins (SAA) are very sensitive acute phase proteins, displaying multiple isoforms in plasma and different body fluids. They are currently under investigation as biomarkers of diseases. The aim of the present study was to compare the concentration and isoform expression of SAA in serum and milk of cows with bacteriologically negative milk (control group) and naturally occurring Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) subclinical mastitis (subclinical mastitis group). Somatic cell count (SCC) and bacteriological analyses were performed to establish the control and subclinical mastitis group. SAA concentration was evaluated using a commercial ELISA kit, while expression of different isoforms (serum A-SAA and milk M-SAA3 isoforms) was visualized by denaturing isoelectrical focusing and immunoblotting. The SAA concentrations in sera and milk of cows in the subclinical mastitis group were three and 100 times higher than in those from the control group of cows, respectively. Cows in the subclinical mastitis group had more acidic SAA isoforms in serum with the most prominent one at pI 5.5. This isoform was not detected in sera from the control group. Milk samples in the subclinical mastitis group contained abundant highly alkaline M-SAA3 isoforms and most of the serum isoforms, except for that at pI 5.5. In the subclinical mastitis group SAA isoforms with equivalent pI as serum isoforms accounted for 20% of the total SAA concentration in milk. There were significant differences in the concentrations and isoform patterns of SAA in serum and milk between the control and subclinical mastitis groups of cows. Also, we demonstrated that serum SAA isoforms were not transferred to milk proportion to their plasma content.
