AB - The electrochemistry of catecholamine neurotransmitters and their precursor l-dopa has been widely studied due to their relevance as biologically important compounds. The detection of these compounds from aqueous solution is hindered by the coexistence of quinone or hydroquinone. However, it was suggested that quinones adsorbed on the electrode surface can enhance catechol detection. In order to estimate the degree of interaction between quinones and l-dopa, cyclic voltammetry and UV-Vis spectroscopic study was performed. A sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone, isolated from the marine sponge Dysidea avara (avarol), has been used in this study. The change of apparent heterogeneous rate constant with different avarol/l-dopa ratio indicated that charge transfer could be enhanced at some extent. In addition to this, the obtained results for avarol and hydroquinone (its structural element) were compared. UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis confirmed interaction between l-dopa and avarol or hydroquinone. Taken all together, the interaction of l-dopa was stronger with hydroquinone than with avarol, presumably reflecting the conformational restrains of avarol caused by its terpenoid moiety.

AB - This study aimed to estimate the potential of the selected berry (strawberry) and drupe (apricot, plum and sweet cherry) fruits as the substrates for the production of new fruit wines enriched with phenolic compounds. Sweet cherry wine (cultivar Burlat) stood out both for the profound content of phenolics (followed by their chemical profile) and potent anti-DPPH radical activity. The same fruit wine samples exhibited high redox potentials, slightly lower than strawberry and plum wine samples. Therefore, sweet cherry cultivar Burlat may be well recommended for development of novel fruit-based products endowed with naturally occurring phenolics. In any case, the remaining four cultivars are also worth further research efforts, particularly apricot cultivar Keckemetska ruza, which is one of the representatives of greatly underestimated fruit type thus far as a substrate for the production of the relevant fruit wines.

AB - Screens of antioxidant activity (AA) of various natural products have been a focus of the research community worldwide. This work aimed to differentiate selected samples of Merlot wines originated from Montenegro, with regard to phenolic profile and antioxidant capacity studied by survival rate, total sulfhydryl groups and activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase and catalase in H2O2-stressed Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. In this study, DPPH assay was also performed. Higher total phenolic content leads to an enhanced AA under both conditions. The same trend was observed for catechin and gallic acid, the most abundant phenolics in the examined wine samples. Finally, the findings of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model were in a good agreement (r(2) = 0.978) with the experimental data. All tested samples exhibited a protective effect in H2O2-stressed yeast cells. Pre-treatment with examined wines increased survival in H2O2-stressed cells and shifted antioxidative defense towards GPx-mediated defense. Finally, sensitivity analysis of obtained ANN model highlights the complexity of the impact that variations in the concentrations of specific phenolic components have on the antioxidant defense system.

AB - The overall aim of this paper was to compare the multielement composition and antioxidant capacity of two Montenegrin Merlot wines obtained from specific vine clones (VCR1 and VCR 101) along with commercial Merlot wine throughout the consecutive vintages in 2010 and 2011. Elemental composition was analysed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Additionally, antioxidant capacity was assessed by cyclic voltammetry. VCR 1 wine from 2011 stood out for its elemental composition. On the other hand, antioxidant capacity of VCR 101 wines was the highest one for the both vintages. According to the experimental data obtained, all three wines are good source of essential elements and products with a significant antioxidant activity and specific geographical origin.

AB - This study aimed to describe quality and potential health benefits of three Vranac wines obtained from new grape clones (CI, CII and CIII) recently developed and recognised. In this aim, their phenolic profiles, anti-2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical activities along with metal compositions were analyzed. Compared with the commercial one, CII and CIII Vranac wines were found to contain both higher contents of total phenolics, flavonoids and monomeric anthocyanins as well as anti-DPPH radical activities. The most abundant phenolics were gallic acid (8.88-16.36 mg/L), catechin (12.42-24.35 mg/L) and epicatechin (4.30-7.79 mg/L). Finally, the metal content of all the analyzed samples was within the toxicological safety limits. Taken all together, Montenegrin Vranac wines represent a rich source of both phenolics and minerals exhibiting promising antioxidant potential. CII and CIII wines can be considered for commercialising due to their high amounts of gallic acid, catechin and epicatechin, significant K/Na ratios and favourable contents of essential metals making them products with health added values.

AB - In vitro acetylholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity of an autochthonous sample of the mushroom Coprinus comatus (encompassing fruiting body FB, mycelia M and filtrate F from the submerged cultivation) was the subject of this study. C. comatus F extract exhibited rather potent anti-AChE activity (73.0 ± 1.5%) at in liquid conditions, comparable to those of the conventional drug donepezil (80.6 ± 1.4%). Also, the same extract exhibited high anti-AChE activity (1 µg) in solid. While its FTIR spectrum indicated the presence of phenolic compounds, quercetin (28.1 µg g−1 d.w.) was found to affect the observed bioactivity (59.8 ± 0.9%). This is the first report of profound anti-AChE activity of any C. comatus extract, a medicinal mushroom that has been successfully cultivated in P.R. China, due to the demanding needs of food industry.

AB - The overall aim was to compare the quality of two Montenegrin Merlot wines obtained from new vine clones (VCR1 and VCR 101) along with commercial Merlot wine throughout the consecutive vintages in 2010 and 2011, due to preliminary screening of the potential of novel Merlot vine clones for the wine industry. The content of phenolic compounds was determined by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Elemental composition was analysed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometery (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometery (ICP-MS)]. Additionaly, antioxidant capacity was assessed by cyclic voltammetry. Compared with the commercial one, both wine clones contained higher percent of major phenolic compounds (namely, gallic acid and catechin) with top values recorded for VCR1 both in 2010 (30.46 +/- 0.42 mg/1) and 2011 (28.12 +/- 0.29 mg/1). The same wines were enriched with epicatechin, resveratrol, myricetin and quercetin. Furthermore, VCR 1 wine from 2011 stood out for its elemental composition. On the other hand, antioxidant capacity of VCR 101 wines was the highest one for the both vintages. According to the experimental data obtained, both new Montenegrin Merlot wines represent good candidates for the commercialised wines with an indication of geographical origin.

AB - Samples of the selected red wine varieties grown in Montenegro (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Vranac; vintages 2010-2012) were compared according to total phenolic content, anti-DPPH radical activity, phenolic profile and elemental composition. All the samples showed profound anti-DPPH radical activity, due to high content of total phenolic compounds (R=0.92). The most abundant phenolics were catechin and gallic acid with the highest values recorded for Merlot 2012 (43.22 and 28.65mg/L, respectively). In addition to this, the content of essential elements including the potentially toxic ones was within healthy (safe) level for all the samples analysed. This study has actually pointed out Merlot wine variety as the best quality one, though all three varieties may be used as safe and health-promoting nutritional products. [GRAPHICS] .

AB - This study aimed to determine antiradical (DPPH center dot and (OH)-O-center dot) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities along with chemical composition of autochtonous fungal species Trametes versicolor (Serbia). A total of 38 phenolic compounds with notable presence of phenolic acids were identified using HPLC/MS-MS. Its water extract exhibited the highest antiradical activity against (OH)-O-center dot (3.21 mu g/mL), among the rest due to the presence of gallic, p-coumaric and caffeic acids. At the concentration of 100 mu g/mL, the same extract displayed a profound AChE inhibitory activity (60.53%) in liquid, compared to donepezil (89.05%), a drug in clinical practice used as positive control. The flavonoids baicalein and quercetin may be responsible compounds for the AChE inhibitory activity observed. These findings have demonstrated considerable potential of T. versicolor water extract as a natural source of antioxidant(s) and/or AChE inhibitor(s) to be eventually used as drug-like compounds or food supplements in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

AB - This study outlines antioxidant and anti-AChE activities of the polysaccharide (PSH) extract from the mushroom species Amanita strobiliformis. Both the presence of α and ß glucans within the aforementioned extract was recorded. PSH extract displayed a profound scavenging activity of OH radicals (IC50 value, 11.86 ± 0.59 μg/mL) and high potential for reduction of Fe3+ ions (174.11 ± 8.70 mg eq. AA/g d.w.) being almost 48- and 5-fold more effective than mannitol and butylated hydroxytoluene used as a positive control, respectively. Compared with galanthamine (0.001 μg), the same extract exhibited a moderate anti-AChE activity (10 μg) in solid. Since purified PSH extract exhibited higher bioactivity (IC50 value 7.27 ± 0.31 μg/mL, 197.68 ± 9.47 mg eq. AA/g d.w. and 0.1 μg, respectively), it can be predominantly ascribed to the polysaccharide compounds. A. strobiliformis PSH extract may be considered as a promising resource of potent bioactive polysaccharides of natural origin successfully addressing both oxidative stress and lack of acetylcholine.

AB - The polysaccharide (PSH) extracts from the edible mushroom species Coprinus comatus and Coprinellus truncorum were screened in liquid for their acetylcholinesterase inhibitory (AChE) activity. Both extracts were found to display inhibition of the aforementioned enzyme reaching similar IC50 values of 0.62 ± 0.07 and 0.61 ± 0.03 mg/mL, respectively. According to the means of FTIR spectroscopy, these PSH extracts mostly contained β-glucans. However, the presence of some proteins and polyphenolics as minor ingredients were also detected. Compared with existing literature data for anti-AChE activity of the sugar samples, the findings within this study may be treated as a profound bioactivity. Consequently, this study puts some light on the possible use of the screened macrofungi in the palliative treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

AB - Two volatile samples of the bryozoan Hyalinella punctata (seasonally collected from the same locality) were isolated (hydrodistillation, Clevenger apparatus), identified (GC and GC-MS) and screened in vitro (EPR) for anti-hydroxyl radical activity. The main components of sample 1 (2-ethyl-1-hexanol 37.00%, dodecanol 21.40% and hexanal 8.40%) and sample 2 (2-ethyl-1-hexanol 30.50%, 7-tridecanol 24.60% and 1-hexadecanol 11.80%) were relatively similar. However, more components were present in the sample 2 (17 and 25, respectively). EPR measurements indicated significant anti-hydroxyl radical activity of the both samples (75.00 +/- 6.00% and 87.00 +/- 8.00%, respectively) whereas the generation of other types of free radicals in reaction with hydroxyl radicals was not observed. According to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of 31 organic compounds from the phylum Bryozoa. Alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters and ethers of lower molecular mass appear to be characteristic for the volatiles of these organisms commonly known as moss animals.

AB - The fatty acid compositions of the moss species Atrichum undulatum (Hedw.) P. Beauv. (Polytrichaceae) and Hypnum andoi A.J.E. Sm. (Hypnaceae) collected in winter time were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as a contribution to their chemistry. Eight fatty acids were identified in the chloroform/methanol extract 1:1 of A. undulatum (linoleic acid, 26.80%, palmitic acid, 22.17%, alpha-linolenic acid, 20.50%, oleic acid, 18.49%, arachidonic acid, 6.21%, stearic acid, 3.34%, cis-5,8,11,14,17-eicosapentaenoic acid, 1.52% and behenic acid, 1.01%), while six fatty acids were found in the same type of extract of H. andoi (palmitic acid, 63.48%, erucic acid, 12.38%, stearic acid, 8.08%, behenic acid, 6.26%, lignoceric acid, 5.16% and arachidic acid, 4.64%). According to this study, the moss A. undulatum can be considered as a good source of both essential fatty acids for humans (linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid) during the winter.
AB - Kao doprinos izučavanju njihovog hemijskog sastava, u ovom radu GC i GC-MS analizom ispitivane su masne kiseline mahovina Atrichum undulatum (Hedw.) P. Beauv. (Polytrichaceae) i Hypnum andoi A.J.E. Sm. (Hypnaceae) sakupljene za vreme zimskog doba. U ekstraktu hloroform/metanol 1:1 vrste A. undulatum identifikovano je osam viših masnih kiselina (linolna kiselina, 26,80%, palmitinska kiselina, 22,17%, α-linolenska kiselina, 20,50%, oleinska kiselina, 18,49%, arahidonska kiselina, 6,21%, stearinska kiselina, 3,34%, cis-5,8,11,14,17-eikosapentaenska kiselina, 1,52% i behenska kiselina, 1,01%), dok je u istom ekstraktu vrste H. andoi nađeno šest viših masnih kiselina (palmitinska kiselina, 63,48%, erukinska kiselina, 12,38%, stearinska kiselina, 8,08%, behenska kiselina, 6,26%, lignocerinska kiselina, 5,16% i arahidinska kiselina, 4,64%). Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju da u ispitivanom vremenskom periodu mahovina A. undulatum predstavlja dobar izvor linolne i α-linolenske kiseline, esencijalnih masnih kiselina za ljude.

AB - Although the second biggest terrestrial group of plants, bryophytes remain poorly known chemically compared to the angiosperms. In this article, the sugars of the moss Rhodobryum ontariense, an unstudied representative of the medicinally known genus, are reported. The chemical analysis revealed the usual plant sugar sucrose, and a new sugar, fructooligosaccharide 1-kestose, which is reported first not only for the genus Rhodobryum, but also for mosses. The trisaccharides have been scantily reported in bryophytes hitherto. This gives more significance to this study for further investigation of its role in the moss species. The health-promoting effect of 1-kestose is also briefly discussed.

(Bryaceae) by thin layer chromatography and high pressure chromatography with anion exchange-pulsed amperometric detector is discussed. According to our knowledge, it is the first record of these saccharides in the genus Rhodobryum as well as in the group of mosses as a whole. The findings are in good agreement with the recent isolation of 1-kestose from the same plant material and confirm that short-chain fructooligosaccharides, well known as prebiotics, are present in the examined bryophyte.

AB - The continuation of our phytochemical survey of Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), has led to the isolation and identification of a new lichen depsidone (1) characterised by the normal analytical and spectroscopic techniques. Unlike previously isolated depsidone (2) from the same species, the compound 1 has not showed activity in the acetylcholinesterase inhibition test on Thin-layer chromatography plate.

AB - As part of our ongoing project of new acetylcholinesterase inhibitors from lower marine and terrestrial species, a phytochemical investigation was conducted on a foliose lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The study led to the isolation of a mixture of acetylated depsidones which showed a moderate activity (0.5 mu g) in the acetylcholinesterase inhibition test on Thin-layer chromatography plate. Our results indicate for the first time the significance of depsidones, highly specific metabolites from lichen species, in searching for these inhibitors which still represent the best drugs currently available for the management of Alzheimer's disease.

AB - The fatty acid composition of the moss Rhytididelphus squarrosus (Hedw.) Warnst. (Hylocomiaceae) collected in Germany during winter time was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Nine fatty acids were identifi ed in its chloroform:methanol extract 1:1: arachidonic acid (30.7%), α-linolenic acid (19.1%), linoleic acid (15.1%), cis-5,8,11,14,17-eicosapentaenoic acid (14.4%), palmitic acid (11.9%), cis-8,11,14- eicosatrienoic acid (4.1%), oleic acid (2.3%), γ-linolenic acid (1.4%) and stearic acid (1.0%). Th e results indicate that this plant species can be a good source of arachidonic acid collected during the winter.
AB - Sastav viših masnih kiselina mahovine Rhytididelphus squarrosus (Hedw.) Warnst. (Hylocomiaceae), sakupljene u Nemačkoj za vreme zimskog doba, preliminarno je ispitivan GC i GC-MS analizom. U njenom ekstraktu hloroform: metanol 1:1 identifikovano je devet viših masnih kiselina: arahidonska kiselina (30.7%), α-linolenska kiselina (19.1%), linolna kiselina (15.1%), cis-5,8,11,14,17-eikosapentaenska kiselina (14.4%), palmitinska kiselina (11.9%), cis-8,11,14-eikosatrienska kiselina (4.1%), oleinska kiselina (2.3%), γ-linolna kiselina (1.4%) i stearinska kiselina (1.0%). Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju da je ova biljna vrsta dobar izvor arahidonske kiseline u ispitivanom vremenskom periodu.

AB - The essential oil composition of the moss Rhodobryum ontariense obtained by hydrodistillation was preliminary analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Thirteen compounds (86.41% of the total oil) were identified. The main chemical constituents were phytol (31.95%) and 1-octen-3-ol (15.44%). Such an abundance of phytol has not yet been reported in other mosses. Four chemicals (cis-decahydronaphthalene, allo-hedycaryol, jasmone and 2,5,5,8a-tetramethyl-1,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydronaphthalene-1-carboxylic acid, methyl ester) are first records, not only for the genus Rhodobryum and mosses in general, but also for the group of bryophytes as a whole.
