AB  - The objective of this study was to test four-dimensional LC-ESI-MS/MS chromatography in analysis of complex mixture such as ethanol extracts of different propolis samples. In total more than 1200 picks were identified and only for 185 literature conformation was found. The given data represent the result of tentative identification, and summarized results are given in the text. Comparing the samples, from different altitudes, 96 components were detected as characteristic in high altitude samples and 18 in samples collected at low altitudes. Antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts of propolis (EEP) and pro­pyl­ene glycol extracts of propolis (PGEP) were carried out on S. aureus, B. cereus, M. flavus, L. monocytogenes, P. aeruginosa, S. typhimurium, E. coli and E. cloacae bacterial strains and compared with broad-spectrum antibiotics, streptomycin and ampicillin. Anti-quorum sensing activity was performed on P. aeruginosa by testing the effect of representative propolis extracts on bio­film formation, twitching and motility activity and production of pyocyanin. We demonstrated that the majority of explored propolis extracts have greater or equal minimal inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concen­tra­tion values compared to antibiotics, independently of the solvent used for the extraction. The samples collected from the highest altitude emerged as least active antimicrobial agents but with the greatest potential as anti-quorum sen­sing agents.
AB  - Циљ овог истраживања је билo тестирање четвородимензионалне LC–ESI-MS/MS хроматографије у анализи комплексних смеша, као што су етанолни екстракти различитих узорака прополиса. Укупно је идентификовано више од 1200 пикова, а самo за 185 смо нашли литературну потврду. Приказани подаци представљају тентативну идентификацију и сумирани резултат је дат у тексту. Поређењем узорака са различитих надморских висина, за 96 једињења је утврђено да се налазе само у узорцима са високе надморске висине и 18 само у узорцима прикупљеним на нижим надморским висинама. Антибактеријске активности етанолних и пропиленгликолних екстрактата прополиса (EEP и PGEP, редом) тестиране су на S. aureus, B. cereus, M. flavus, L. monocytogenes, P. aeruginosa, S. typhimurium, E. coli и E. cloacae бактеријским линијама и поређене са анти- биотицима широког спектра деловања, стрептомицином и ампицилином. Anti-quorum sensing активност је тестирана на P. aeruginosa испитивањем ефекта репрезентативних екстраката прополиса на формирање биофилма, тестовима покретљивости руба коло- није (twitching и mobility) и производње пиоцианина. Показали смо да највећи број, коришћених екстраката прополиса, има истe и/или мање MIC и MBC вредности, у поре- ђењу са атибиотицима, независно од растварача коришћеног за екстракцију. Узорци прикупљени на високим надморским висинама су се показали као најмање активни антибактерициди али имају велики anti-quorum sensing потенцијал.

AB  - In the present study, twelve new 1-aryl-3-ethyl-3-methylpyrrolidine-2,5-diones were synthesized and their structures were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In the final step of synthetic rout, condensation between corresponding succinic acid and substituted anilines has been improved using the microwave irradiation. Significantly higher yields compared to conventional condensation have been observed. The preliminary biological results indicated that some of the synthesized compounds showed promising in vitro antifungal activities towards several test fungi. 1-(4-Bromophenyl)-3-ethyl-3-methylpyrrolidine-2,5-dione (8) exhibited significant in vitro inhibitory activities against broad spectra of fungus, and on the basis of obtained data, the investigated bromo derivative has to be observed as novel potential fungicide. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed in order to study the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of the investigated molecules. In order to prediction of the chemical activity of the molecule, the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) map was analyzed for the optimized geometry of 1-phenyl-3-ethyl-3-methylpyrrolidine-2,5-dione (4) and 1-(4-bromophenyl)-3-ethyl-3-methylpyrrolidine-2,5-dione (8).

AB  - This study was performed to determine the main antibacterial compounds of the essential oil (ЕО) of saltmarsh plant Artemisia santonicum (Asteraceae). The combination of HPTLC and direct bioautography was used for the activity guided isolation of isogeranic acid as the main antibacterial constituent with remarkable antimicrobial activity, although it was the minor component of the EO, present only in 0.2 %, as calculated from GC/FID. Its structure was determined by 1D- and 2D-NMR and GC–MS techniques. Antibacterial activity of isogeranic acid against all tested bacteria was significantly higher than EO and even than both controls streptomycin and ampicillin. In further investigation of antibiofilm and antiquorum sensing activity EO exhibited the best inhibition of the biofilm formation at 1/8 minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and isogeranic acid at 1/2 MIC. Both EO and isogeranic acid possessed pyocyanin inhibitory activity showing the reduction of pigment at 60.6 and 62.8 %, respectively, at 1/2 MIC concentrations.
AB  - Ово истраживање је спроведено у циљу одређивања главних антибактеријских компоненти етарског уља слатинске биљне врсте Artemisia santonicum (Asteraceae). Комбинација HPTLC методе и методе директне биоаутографије је коришћена за активношћу вођено изоловање изогеранилне киселине као главне компоненте са значајном антимикробном, антибиофилм и антикворум активношћу иако је била присутна у етарском уљу са само 0,2 %, израчунато из GC/FID. Њена структура је одређена 1D и 2D NMR и GC–MS техникама. Антибактеријска активност изогеранилне киселине на све тестиране бактерије је била значајно боља од етарског уља, и од обе контроле, стрептомицина и ампицилина. Етарско уље је показало најбољу инхибицију формирања биофилма у концентрацији 1/8 минималне инфибиторске концнетрације (MIC вредности), а изогеранилна киселина у концентрацији 1/2 MIC вредности. И етарско уље и изогеранилна киселина су имале пиоцијанин инхибиторну активност показавши смањење пигмента на 60,6 и 62,8 %, у концентрацији 1/2 MIC вредности, редом.

AB  - Diarylheptanoids from the barks of Alnus viridis ssp. viridis (green alder) and Alnus glutinosa (black alder) were explored for anti-quorum sensing activity. Chemicals with anti-quorum sensing activity have recently been examined for antimicrobial applications. The anti-quorum sensing activity of the selected diarylheptanoids was determined using two biosensors, namely Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and Chromobacterium violaceum CV026. Although all of the investigated compounds negatively influenced the motility of P. aeruginosa PAO1, four were able to inhibit biofilm formation of this human opportunistic pathogen for 40-70%. Three of the diarylheptanoids (3, 4, and 5) negatively influenced the biosynthesis of pyocyanin, which is under the control of quorum sensing. Platyphyllenone (7) and hirsutenone (5) were able to inhibit the biosynthesis of violacein in C. violaceum CV026, with 5 being able to inhibit the synthesis of both biopigments. Only one of the tested diarylheptanoids (1) was shown to significantly decrease the production of acyl homoserine lactones (AHL) in P. aeruginosa PAO1, more specifically, production of the long chain N-(3-oxododecanoyl)- l-HSL. On the other side, four diarylheptanoids (2-5) significantly reduced the synthesis of 2-alkyl-4-quinolones, part of the P. aeruginosa quinolone-mediated signaling system. To properly assess therapeutic potential of these compounds, their in vitro antiproliferative effect on normal human lung fibroblasts was determined, with doses affecting cell proliferation between 10 and 100 mu g/mL. This study confirms that the barks of green and black alders are rich source of phytochemicals with a wide range of biological activities that could further be exploited as natural agents against bacterial contaminations and infections.

AB  - The chemical composition, antimicrobial and antiquorum sensing activity of the essential oil of Micromeria thymifolia (Scop.) Fritsch were investigated. Limonene, piperitone epoxide and piperitenone epoxide were found as the main constituents using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique. In vitro antimicrobial activity of the oil was tested against six bacterial and seven fungal strains and high antimicrobial potential was noticed. Minimum inhibitory concentration varied from 0.031 mg/mL to 0.5 mg/mL for bacterial and 0.062 mg/mL to 0.5 mg/mL for fungal strains. The antiquorum properties of the essential oil were evaluated on Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. The oil was tested at subMiC concentrations for anti-quorum sensing activity. The analyses on quorum-sensing functions have been carried out by evaluating twitching and swarming of bacterial cultures and the total amount of pyocyanin production produced by P. aeruginosa. This study showed that M thymifolia essential oil exhibited antiquorum sensing activity and may be used as an antipathogenic drug.

An evaluation of antioxidant activity showed that the methanol and aqueous extracts of the aerial parts had the highest potential. In terms of antimicrobial activity determined by microdilution assays, the essential oil and methanol extract of the roots showed the greatest effectiveness. The colonies of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 treated with H. orphanidis samples produced less toxic pyocyanin, showed lower twitching and flagella mobility and biofilm formatting was reduced. The analyses in this study showed the considerable biological potential of H. orphanidis considering free radicals and various pathogenic strains, including the wild type of P. aeruginosa.

An evaluation of antioxidant activity showed that the methanol and aqueous extracts of the aerial parts had the highest potential. In terms of antimicrobial activity determined by microdilution assays, the essential oil and methanol extract of the roots showed the greatest effectiveness. The colonies of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 treated with H. orphanidis samples produced less toxic pyocyanin, showed lower twitching and flagella mobility and biofilm formatting was reduced. The analyses in this study showed the considerable biological potential of H. orphanidis considering free radicals and various pathogenic strains, including the wild type of P. aeruginosa.",

AB  - In recent years great attention was paid to biological control, the application of natural products in order to protect crops and medicinal plants against contamination with phytopathogenic and saprophytic fungi. Essential oils have been evaluated as a potentially safe replacement for chemicals used for that purpose. In this regard, antifungal potential of six essential oils was examined coupled with determination of the complete qualitative and quantitative chemical composition by GC-FID and GC-MS analysis. While essential oils of rosemary, sage, Spanish sage and black pepper were exclusively composed of monoterpenes, vetiver essential oil was entirely composed of sesquiterpenes. In essential oil of cinnamon dominates (E)-cinnamaldehyde. Applying the in vitro microdilution method, it was found that all essential oils were active in inhibiting the growth of all tested 21 pre- and post-harvest phytopathogenic and saprophytic fungi. MIC and MFC ranged from 1.2 mg ml-1 up to 22.6 mg ml-1 according to the test oil. Rosemary oil showed the best antifungal potential, followed by black pepper and cinnamon oil. Sage and Spanish sage oils also exhibited significant antifungal potential. Vetiver oil demonstrated the lowest antifungal activity. Essential oils that showed considerable antifungal potential are good candidates for further examination of their use in preventing and/or protection of medicinal plants, their seeds and dried drugs against fungal infections, both in the field and in warehouses.
AB  - Poslednjih godina velika pažnja poklanja se biološkoj kontroli to jest primeni prirodnih produkata u zaštiti, kako poljoprivrednih kultura, tako i lekovitog bilja od kontaminacije fitopatogenim i saprofitnim gljivama. U tom smislu, ispitivan je antifungalni potencijal šest etarskih ulja uz određivanje kompletnog kvalitativnog i kvantitativnog hemijskog sastava primenom GC-FID i GC-MS analiza. Dok se korišćeni uzorci etarskih ulja ruzmarina, žalfije, španske žalfije i crnog bibera isključivo sastoje od monoterpena, u ulju vetivera potpuno dominiraju seskviterpeni. U etarskom ulju cimeta najzastupljenija komponneta je bila (E)- cinemaldehid. AB  - The development of protective products with natural origin as alternatives to synthetic fungicides is currently in the spotlight. Qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis of 16 selected essential oils was determined. Then, antifungal properties determined by in vitro microdilution method against 21 fungi isolated from herbal drugs were evaluated. All tested oils showed some antifungal activity against all fungi used. Savory, thyme and oregano oils, characterized by the presence of phenol such as carvacrol and thymol, and rose oil containing mainly monoterpene alcohols (citronellol and geraniol) proved to be the most effective inhibitor of all fungi tested. Also, combination of particular oils showed reduction of the MIC values when combined, commendatory mixtures for potential application in practice. Moreover, the reduction of the total number of fungi, in situ, using selected essential oils was determined.

AB  - The aim of the study was to investigate the chemical composition of Hyssopus officinalis L subsp. pilifer (Pant.) Murb. essential oil (EO) and deodorized extracts (DE) and to evaluate their potential antifungal and antioxidant activities. EO was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Among the 30 compounds identified in the oil, the main were 1.8-cineole (36.43%), beta-pinene (19.55%), isopinocamphone (15.32%) and trans-pinocamphone (6.39%). Deodorized aqueous extract (DAE) was analyzed by LC-DAD/ESI-TOF MS. The most significant phenolic acids detected in DAE were syringic, caffeoylqunic acids, feruloylquinic and rosmarinic acid. Aspergillus niger, A. ochraceus, A. versicolor, A. fumigatus, Cladosporium cladosporioides, C. fulvum, Penicillium funiculosum, P. ochrochloron, Trichoderma viride and Candida albicans yeast were used for antifungal assay. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) of the tested EO and DEs were recorded by the microdilution method. The antioxidant potential of the extracts was evaluated by means of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging method. The deodorized aqueous extract (DAE) possessed the highest scavenging activity (EC50=0.54 mg/ml) followed by the deodorized methanol extract (DME) (EC50=0.82 mg/ml) and deodorized ethyl acetate extract (DEE) (EC50 = 2.97 mg/ml). EC/possessed the lowest activities compared to other extracts and control substances. Total phenolic content of DEs was determined by Folin-Ciocalteau (FC) assay and gallic acid was used as the standard. DAE of H. officinalis subsp. pilifer exhibited the highest phenolic content 96.47 GAE.

AB  - The composition of leaf cuticular neutral lipids of Amphoricarpos autariatus ssp. autariatus collected at canyon of river Tara (North Montenegro) was investigated by GC/MS (nonpolar fraction), LC-ESI TOF MS and 1H NMR spectroscopy (more polar fraction). The nonpolar fraction (ca. 15% of the whole surface extract) contained C27 - 33 n-alkanes, those with odd-number of carbons predominating. The LC-ESI MS and 1H NMR of the more polar fraction revealed 13 sesquiterpene lactones, constituting ca. 97.5% of the lactone mixture, identified as the known guaianolides, so-called amphoricarpolides, found previously in the aerial parts of the genus. The lactone fraction exhibited considerable in vitro effect against eight fungi, i.e. Aspergillus ochraceus, A. niger, A. versicolor, Penicillium funiculosum, P. ochrochloron, Trichoderma viride, Fusarium verticillioides and Fulvia fulvum.

AB  - An investigation of the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Galatella linosyris is presented. AB  - U ovom radu je prikazano ispitivanje hemijskog sastava i antimikrobne aktivnosti etarskog ulja biljne vrste Galatella linosyris. Hemijskom analizom (GC-MS i NMR) je utvrđeno da su glavni sastojci ovog etarskog ulja sabinen (40 %), β-pinen (35,5 %) , α-pinen (4,5 %), limonen (4 %), γ-muurolen (4 %) i (E)-kariofilen (3,3 %). AB  - The antimicrobial activity of the freshwater bryozoan Hyalinella punctata (Hancock, 1850) was tested by microdilution method against eight bacteria and eight fungi for the first time. All five crude extracts (hexane, acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide, methanol and water) showed good antibacterial and antifungal potential in vitro wherein the acetone extract was the most active (MICs 0.50-7.00 mu g/ml and MBCs 2.50-10.00 mu g/ml).

AB  - The essential oil from aerial parts of Seseli globiferum Vis. obtained by hydrodistillation with Clevenger-type apparatus was analyzed by GC-MS. Twenty-eight compounds were identified, representing 99.4% of the total oil. The main components of the oil were sabinene (38.0%), alpha-pinene (21.2%) and beta-phellandrene (13.5%). The microbial growth inhibitory properties of the isolated essential oil were determined using the broth microdilution method against seven bacterial species: Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC 13311), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Enterobacter cloacae (clinical isolates), Bacillus cereus (clinical isolates), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Staphylococcus epidermidis (ATCC 12228), Micrococcus flaw's (ATCC 10240) and three fungal species: Aspergillus niger (ATCC 6275), Aspergillus versicolor (ATCC 11730), Trichoderma viride (IAM 5061) and Penicillium funiculosum (ATCC 36839). The essential oil showed activity against bacteria P. aeruginosa, followed by M flavus, L. monocytigenes and E. coli, and all investigated fungal species.

AB  - The potential antifungal effects of Thymus vulgaris L., Thymus tosevii L., Mentha spicata L., and Mentha piperita L. (Labiatae) essential oils and their components against 17 micromycetal food poisoning, plant, animal and human pathogens are presented. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodestillation of dried plant material. Their composition was determined by GC-MS. Identification of individual constituents was made by comparison with analytical standards, and by computer matching mass spectral data with those of the Wiley/NBS Library of Mass Spectra. MIC's and MFC's of the oils and their components were determined by dilution assays. Thymol (48.9%) and p-cymene (19.0%) were the main components of T. vulgaris, while carvacrol (12.8%), α-terpinyl acetate (12.3%), cis-myrtanol (11.2%) and thymol (10.4%) were dominant in T. tosevii. Both Thymus species showed very strong antifungal activities. In M. piperita oil menthol (37.4%), menthyl acetate (17.4%) and menthone (12.7%) were the main components, whereas those of M. spicata oil were carvone (69.5%) and menthone (21.9%). Mentha sp. showed strong antifungal activities, however lower than Thymus sp. The commercial fungicide, bifonazole, used as a control, had much lower antifungal activity than the oils and components investigated. AB  - The chemical composition of the essential oil of fresh young needles with twigs of Douglas fir (Pseudosuga menziesii Mirb. Franco) obtained by hydrodistillation were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Ten compounds, accounting for 94.26 % of the oil, were identified. The main compounds found were bornyl acetate (34.65 %), camphene (29.82 %), α-pinene (11.65 %) and santene (5.45 %). The antifungal activity of the essential oil was tested against various fungal species. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Douglas fir essential oil ranged from 1.5 to 4 μg mL-1. The fungi most sensitive to the tested oil were Phomopsis helianthi, while Penicillium species, along with Microsporum canis, were the most resistant. Compared to the commercial fungicidal agent bifonazole, the studied essential oil demonstrated higher antifungal activity.
AB  - Hemijski sastav etarskog ulja mladih iglica sa grančicama duglazije (Pseudosuga menziesii Mirb. Franco) dobijenog destilacijom vodenom parom, analiziran je gasnom hromatografijom (GC) i kombinacijom gasne hromatografije i masene spektrometrije (GC/MS). Identifikovano je deset jedinjenja ukupne zastupljenosti 94,26 %. Kao glavne komponente su nađeni: bornil-acetat (34,65 %), kamfen (29,82 %), α-pinen (11,65 %) i santen (5,45 %). Pored toga, etarsko ulje je testirano na antifungalnu aktivnost. Etarsko ulje pokazuje mnogo bolju antifugalnu akivnost od komercijalnog fungicidnog agensa bifonazola. Minimalna inhibitorna koncentracija etarskog ulja duglazije je u opsegu od 0,6 do 1,4 μL mL-1. Najosetljiviji na testirano ulje je bio soj Phomopsis helianthi, dok sojevi Penicillium i Microsporum canis pokazuju najveću rezistentnost.

The fungi most sensitive to the tested oil were Phomopsis helianthi, while Penicillium species, along with Microsporum canis, were the most resistant. Compared to the commercial fungicidal agent bifonazole, the studied essential oil demonstrated higher antifungal activity., Hemijski sastav etarskog ulja mladih iglica sa grančicama duglazije (Pseudosuga menziesii Mirb. Franco) dobijenog destilacijom vodenom parom, analiziran je gasnom hromatografijom (GC) i kombinacijom gasne hromatografije i masene spektrometrije (GC/MS). Identifikovano je deset jedinjenja ukupne zastupljenosti 94,26 %. Kao glavne komponente su nađeni: bornil-acetat (34,65 %), kamfen (29,82 %), α-pinen (11,65 %) i santen (5,45 %). Pored toga, etarsko ulje je testirano na antifungalnu aktivnost. Etarsko ulje pokazuje mnogo bolju antifugalnu akivnost od komercijalnog fungicidnog agensa bifonazola. Minimalna inhibitorna koncentracija etarskog ulja duglazije je u opsegu od 0,6 do 1,4 μL mL-1. Najosetljiviji na testirano ulje je bio soj Phomopsis helianthi, dok sojevi Penicillium i Microsporum canis pokazuju najveću rezistentnost.",

AB  - The essential oil from the aerial parts of Seseli annuum, wild-growing in Serbia, was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed using GC and GC/MS. A total of 43 components were identified representing 96.5% of S. annuum oil. The most abundant compounds were germacrene D (29.8%), sabinene (10.3%), beta-ocimene Z (9.8%) and limonene (8.6%). AB  - Essential oils from leaves with young branches of Cotinus coggygria Scop. from two localities in Serbia (Deliblatska peščara and Zemun), obtained by hydrodistillation, were analyzed by GC-MS. Thirty-one component were identified from both oils and among them monoterpenic hydrocarbons were the dominant class (87.4 and 93.1 %). The dominant constituent in both essential oils was limonene (47.0 and 39.2 %). Both oils were also tested for antibacterial and antifungal activities. In comparison to streptomycin, both oils showed slightly higher activity (against most Gram-positive bacteria) in the disc diffusion method and slightly lower activity when the microdilution method was employed. They also exhibited antifungal potential higher than that of the commercial fungicide bifonazole.
AB  - Primenom GC-MS metode identifikovana je ukupno 31 komponenta u oba etarska ulja izolovana destilacijom vodenom parom iz lišća i mladih grančica biljne vrste Cotinus coggygria Scop. sa dva lokaliteta u Srbiji (Deliblatska peščara i Zemun). Takođe je ispitana antibakterijska i antifungalna aktivnost oba uzorka. U oba ulja najzastupljeniji su bili monoterpenski ugljovodonici (87,4 i 93,1 %), među kojima je dominantna komponenta limonen (47,0 i 39,2 %). Antibakterijska aktivnost je određena difuzionom i mikrodilucionom metodom, a antifungalna aktivnost modifikovanom mikrodilucionom metodom. Prema dufuzionoj metodi, oba ulja su pokazala nešto bolje antibakterijsko dejstvo (prvenstveno na gram-pozitivne bakterije) nego streptomicin, dok je na osnovu mikrodilucione metode njihova aktivnost bila nešto slabija. U poređenju sa bifonazolom, oba testirana ulja su pokazala nešto bolje antifungalno dejstvo.

All the compounds inhibited the growth of the applied fungi. The overall activity of one of them, 2-hydroxy-2,6,10-trimethyl-7,10-epoxy-dodeca-3,11-dien-5-on, was comparable to that of the antibiotic bifonazole.
AB  - Pet tetrahidrofuranskih terpenoida davanonskog tipa i kumarin umbeliferon koji su prethodno izolovani iz biljne vrste Aretemisia lobelii var. conescens ispitivani su na antifungalnu aktivnost. Sva testirana jedinjenja inhibiraju rast primenjenih kultura gljiva. Najveću aktivnost, koja se može meriti sa aktivnošću komercijalnog antibiotika bifonazola, pokazuje 2-hidroksi-2,6,10-trimetil-7,10-epoksidodeka-3,11-dien-5-on.
