AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful amino-functionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer.
AB - U okviru ovog rada opisana je sinteza magnetičnih i nemagnetičnih makroporoznih umreženih kopolimera glicidil-metakrilata i trimetil-olpropan trimetakrilata suspenzionom kopolimerizacijom. Dobijeni uzorci su dodatno funkcionalizovani dietilentriaminom i okarakterisani živinom porozimetrijom, skenirajućom elektronskom mikroskopijom sa energo-disperzivnom spektrometrijom (SEM-EDS), infracrvenom spektroskopijom sa Furijeovom (Fourier) transformacijom (FTIR-ATR), termogravime-trijskom analizom (TGA), rentgenskom difrakcionom analizom (XRD), mikroskopijom atomskih sila (AFM), transmisionom elektronskom mikroskopijom (TEM) i SQUID-magnetometrijom.

AB - Magnetic anisotropy in pentagonal bipyramidal complexes of Co(II) (1 and 2), Fe(III) (3 and 4), and Ni(II) (5) with a 2,2′-[2,6-pyridinediylbis(ethylidyne-1-hydrazinyl-2-ylidene)]bis[N,N,N-trimethyl-2-oxoethanaminium] equatorial ligand and isothiocyanato axial ligands has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility measurements, powder X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, ab initio, and ligand-field density functional theory (LFDFT) calculations. The studied complexes display three distinct types of magnetic anisotropy. Co(II) complexes (1 and 2) show an easy plane anisotropy with large and positive D values and negligible rhombicity. The Ni(II) complex (5) has uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with a negative D value. Fe(III) complexes (3 and 4) have small zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters. Theoretical modeling is used to rationalize the magnetic anisotropy in these systems and to identify the most important excited states that are responsible for the zero-field splitting. These excitations are a consequence of the electronic structure of the central metal ion in ideal pentagonal bipyramidal coordination.

AB - A tridentate NNO condensation product of 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde and Girard's T reagent (HLC1) in the presence of azide ions coordinates with cobalt(II) giving mononuclear azido Co(II) complex [CoHL (N-3)(3)](1) as a main product and dinuclear end-on azido bridged Co(II) complex [Co2L2(mu-(1,1)-N-3)(2)(N-3)(2)] (2) in traces. Crystal structures of both complexes were determined. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurement studies of complex I showed that Co(II) cation is in the low-spin state with t(2g)(6)e(g)(1) (S = 1/2) configuration. DFT-BS calculations for complex 2 anticipated ferromagnetic type interaction between paramagnetic centers (J = 53 cm(-1)).

AB - Magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) samples with different magnetite content were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine. Samples were characterized by elemental analysis, mercury porosimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, SQUID magnetometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The selected amino-functionalized sample was tested as a potential sorbent for the Mo(VI) and Re(VII) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. The influence of pH, ionic strength and possible interfering of cations and anions was investigated. Equilibrium data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption isotherm models. Sorption studies were carried out in a batch competitive experiments, in the pH range 1-8, at 298 K. Obtained results indicate that 92% of Re(VII) and 98% of Mo(VI) were sorbed at pH 2.

Sorption studies were carried out in a batch competitive experiments, in the pH range 1-8, at 298 K. Obtained results indicate that 92% of Re(VII) and 98% of Mo(VI) were sorbed at pH 2.

AB - A novel magnetic macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (mPGME) was prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine (mPGME-deta). The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and SQUID magnetometry. The sorption behavior of mPGME-deta toward pertechnetate ions (TcO4-) from aqueous solution was studied. Experimental results indicated relatively fast TcO4- sorption kinetics that depends on pH and ionic strength, with a high removal efficiency of 99% within 180 min in the pH range 3.0-5.0. The pseudo-second-order model yielded the best fit for the kinetic data.

AB - Octahedral and square-planar isothiocyanato complexes of Ni(II) with the condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde and Girard's T reagent were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Results of magnetic measurements for octahedral Ni(II) complex were also reported. In all the complexes the ligand is coordinated as tridentate via the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen atoms while the remaining coordination positions are occupied with thiocyanato anions. Coordination of deprotonated phosphine ligand results in formation of square-planar complexes, while the octahedral complex was formed with protonated ligand. Reaction energetics with both forms of ligand were studied by the means of DFT and results were in complete agreement with experimental observations. Furthermore, ligand field splitting analysis gave the deeper insight in the relationship of the isolated complex coordination environment and protonation of the ligand.

AB - Complexes of Pd(II) and Fe(III) with the condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde and ethyl carbazate were synthesized, characterized, and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated. The structures of the Pd(II) and Fe(III) complexes in solid state were determined by IR, elemental analysis and X-ray analysis. The structure of Pd(II) complex in solution was determined by NMR spectroscopy. Results of magnetic measurements for Fe(III) complex were reported. In both complexes the ligand is coordinated as tridentate via the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen atoms. Results of antimicrobial activity investigation indicate that the activity of the ligand is enhanced upon complexation, and that the MIC values of the iron complex to some bacterial strains are not much higher than those of cefotaxime.

AB - Pillared clays (PILCs) based on bentonite clay from "Bogovina" (Serbia) were obtained using Al3+ and Fe3+ pillaring cations in different ratios. Thorough characterization of the starting material and PILCs was performed for better understanding of the catalytic activity that they had exibited in the catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of organic pollutants in water. The characterization consisted of the following techniques: XRD, XRD of oriented samples (swelling test), Greene-Kelley test (smectite type determination), TGA/DTA followed by XRD analysis of samples heated at characteristic temperatures, elemental analysis using ICP-OES and microwave digestion. FTIR, DR UV-Vis, Mossbauer spectroscopy, nitrogen physisorption at -196 degrees C and SEM imaging. Smectite in admixture with quartz was identified, together with impurities like feldspar, illite, chlorite and X-ray amorphous matter. Smectite mineral was dominantly of the beidellite type. Pillaring led to changes in the d(001) smectite basal spacing and stabilization of the smectite structure. Increasing Fe3+ content of the pillaring solutions resulted in the increased incorporation of iron into the PILCs as isolated octahedrally coordinated Fe3+ cations, smaller and bigger oligonuclear octahedrally coordinated Fe3+ species and octahedrally coordinated Fe3+ particles. The structure of incorporated pillars was similar to that of naturally occurring minerals akageneite and lepidocrocite. Micro- and mesoporosity were improved due to pillaring and the layered smectite structure was retained.

AB - A new malonic dihydrazide-based ligand, N',N'(2)-bis[(1E)-1-(2-quinolyl)methylene]propanedihydrazide (H(2)L3), has been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, C-13 NMR, and H-1 NMR spectroscopies. In the reaction of H(2)L3 with Ni(II) a binuclear complex has been obtained. The structure of the complex was established by X-ray analysis. Each Ni(II) is coordinated with two NNO donor sets from two ligand molecules in dianionic form (L3(2-)) forming an octahedral geometry. Multiple intramolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot pi (chelate ring) interactions support the molecular geometry of the [Ni-2(L3)(2)] complex. The structure of [Ni-2(L3)(2)] is compared with those of analogous Ni(II) complexes with pyridine dihydrazone type ligands. Magnetic behavior of the dinuclear complex was studied in temperature range of 2-300 K.

AB - One of the more important developments in magnetic materials, polymer bonded magnets, have opened a new world of application opportunities. The Nd-Fe-B/polymer composite materials offer an excellent combination of strong magnetic and dynamical-mechanical properties. However, the transition temperatures of filler and matrix should be selected carefully considering the future application. Uniform particle distribution and good adhesion between Nd-Fe-B powder particles and polymer are essential for the quality of the composite, while stiffness of polymer matrix is one of the influencing factors as well. The damping properties of Nd-Fe-B/polymer composites with 15 wt.%, 50 wt.% and 75 wt.% of Nd-Fe-B powder were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis and compared with a pure polymer sample. Thermal stability was analyzed using a simultaneous differential scanning calorimetric and thermogravimetric analysis technique.

AB - Three novel copper(II) complexes as condensation derivatives of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, 2-acetylpyridine or 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde with ethyl hydrazinoacetate hydrochloride were synthesized. X-ray crystal structures of all three complexes were determined. Crystallographic data indicate a common basis of the structures with some major differences. Both pyridine derivatives form complexes of the type [CuCl2L] with distorted square-planar geometry around copper(II), but show a decisive difference in the side chain orientation. The quinoline derivative forms a dimeric complex of type [Cu2Cl4L2] with distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry around copper(II), but a rather short Cu···Cu contact, which is reflected in its magnetic properties. All three complexes showed antibacterial activity.

AB - Phase transformations and magnetic properties of multiphase Nd 4.5Fe76.2B19.5 alloy were investigated in the temperature range of heat treatment 600-700°C. The influence of different heat treatment regimes was observed by correlation of phase composition and measured magnetic properties. The heat treatment regime, which provided the microstructure that improves exchange interactions between grains of soft and hard magnetic phases and consequently enhances magnetic properties, was defined and discussed. For optimized magnetic alloy grain size of the present phases Fe3B, Nd2Fe14B and α-Fe was calculated by size-strain analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data. Calculated mean grain size was on a nanoscale, below 30 nm.
