AB - This study was carried out at the Danube River and its tributaries during the Joint Danube
Survey 4 (JDS4) expedition. Three freshwater benthic species were used to estimate the quantity
of microplastics (MPs): Corbicula spp., Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Claparede, 1862), and Polypedilum nubeculosum (Meigen, 1804). Following the kick and sweep technique, individuals were sampled using a hand net or dredge. In order to estimate the number of MP articles/individual particles/g wet body mass, the body mass and total length of all specimens were measured. Alkaline (Corbicula spp.and L. hoffmaisteri) and enzymatic (P. nubeculosum) protocols were performed for tissue degradation. All samples were filtered through glass microfiber filters (mesh size 0.5 μm). The particles were photographed, measured, and counted. A total of 1904, 169, and 204 MPs were isolated from Corbicula spp., L. hoffmaisteri, and P. nubeculosum, respectively. To confirm the chemical composition of isolated MPs, a subsample of 46 particles of the fragmented particles from 14 sampling sites was analysed via μ-ATR-FTIR spectroscopy analysis. The particles were characterised as polycarbonate (PC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene–polyethylene copolymer (PP-PE), nylon (polyamide-PA) and cellophane, with the domination of PET.

AB - Euphorbia seguieriana ssp. seguieriana Necker (ES) and Euphorbia cyparissias (EC) with a habitat in the Deliblato Sands were the subject of this examination. The latexes of these so far insufficiently investigated species of the Euphorbia genus are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of wounds and warts on the skin. To determine their chemical composition, non-targeted screening of the latexes’ chloroform extracts was performed using liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry employing an electrospray ionization source (LC-ESI QTOF MS). The analysis of the obtained results showed that the latexes of ES and EC represent rich sources of diterpenes, tentatively identified as jatrophanes, ingenanes, tiglianes, myrsinanes, premyrsinanes, and others. Examination of the anticancer activity of the ES and EC latex extracts showed that both extracts significantly inhibited the growth of the non-small cell lung carcinoma NCI-H460 and glioblastoma U87 cell lines as well as of their corresponding multi-drug resistant (MDR) cell lines, NCI-H460/R and U87-TxR. The obtained results also revealed that the ES and EC extracts inhibited the function of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in MDR cancer cells, whose overexpression is one of the main mechanisms underlying MDR.

AB - The aim of this study was to find the chemical parameters for the differentiation of plum cultivars grown along the fjord areas of Western Norway and Eastern Norway, having specific agroclimatic conditions. Chemical analysis of the fruits confirmed the contents of 13 quantified elements, 22 sugar compounds, 11 organic acids, 19 phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity in 68 plum cultivars. Dominated contents were noted for nitrogen (with the maximum mean value of 3.11%), potassium (8055.80 mg/kg), and phosphorous (7878.88 mg/kg). Averagely, the highest level of sugars was determined for glucose (244.46 g/kg), fructose (197.92 g/kg), sucrose (208.25 g/kg), and sorbitol (98.02 g/kg), organic acids for malic acid (24.06 g/kg), and for polyphenol compounds were 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (66.31 mg/kg), and rutin (58.06 mg/kg). Applied principal component analysis has been useful for distinguishing the plum cultivars from three areas in Norway where copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, and sodium; sucrose, ribose, maltose, and raffinose; p-hydroxybenzoic acid, rutin, ferulic acid, kaempferol 7-O-glucoside, p-coumaric acid, and 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid were the most influential. In regard to human health and future breeding work that will have the aim to produce functional food with high health-related compounds, the plum cultivar ‘Mallard’ should be underlined due to the high level of elements, ‘Valor’ due to high sugar content, ‘Helgøyplomme’ due to content of organic acids, and ‘Diamond’ due to the content of phenolic compounds. © 2023 by the authors.

AB - Background: Doxorubicin (DOX) has been very effective against glioblastoma invitro. Its application in vivo is hampered because it cannot pass the blood–brainbarrier (BBB). Significant research efforts are invested to overcome this limitation.Sclareol (SC) is an aromatic compound naturally found in clary sage. Thecombination of SC and DOX showed promising effects in different tumor types invitro and in vivo. Therefore, we tested their combination and innovative hybridmolecules (SC:DOX) on glioblastoma cells with the expression of P-glycoprotein, amajor component of BBB and cancer multidrug resistance marker. Methods:Cytotoxicity and selectivity towards glioblastoma cells of SC, DOX, theircombination, and SC:DOX were examined by MTT assay. The effect of SC on DOXaccumulation was determined by flow cytometry. We also studied SC:DOXaccumulation, cellular uptake, localization imaging, and DNA damage induction. Results: The effects of simultaneous SC and DOX treatments demonstrated theconsiderable potential of SC to reverse DOX resistance in glioblastoma cells andincrease DOX accumulation. SC:DOX hybrids, named CON1 and CON2 were lesscytotoxic than DOX, but with reduced resistance and increased selectivity towardsglioblastoma cells. Cellular uptake of CON1 and CON2 was increased in glioblastomacells compared to DOX. Perinuclear localization of CON1 and CON2 vs. nuclearlocalization of DOX as well as no DNA damaging effects suggest a differentmechanism of action for SC:DOX. Conclusion: The combination of SC and DOX, andtheir innovative hybrids, could be considered a promising strategy that can overcomethe limitations of DOX application in glioblastoma.

AB - Euphorbia cyparissias L. (cypress spurge) is one of the many species of the genus Euphorbia. Like other plant species of the genus, E. cyparissias is a source of biologically active compounds [1, 2]. The aim of this research was to profile the chloroform-methanol latex extract and detect the type of secondary metabolites of Serbian E. cyparissias, collected in Deliblato Sand
(Serbia) in May 2022, using liquid chromatography – electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry. Based on the obtained results, terpene derivatives have been found as the most abundant in the latex extract, mainly diterpenes (jatrophanes and ingenanes) and triterpenes. Also, the anticancer activ ity of the latex extract on the cell lines NCI-H460, NCI-H460/R, U87, U87/
TxR and MRC-5, as well as the ability to inhibit P-gp, were examined. Latex extract exhibited anticancer activity against all tested cell lines, and also
proved to be a strong P-gp inhibitor. The obtained results are in accordance with the literature data because jatrophanes are well-known strong P-gp
inhibitors [3]. These preliminary results indicate that this plant material is a rich source of biologically active compounds and detailed phytochemical research of E. cyparissias is further planned.

These preliminary results indicate that this plant material is a rich source of biologically active compounds and detailed phytochemical research of E. cyparissias is further planned.",

AB - Polyurethane (PU) nanocomposite materials, offer very desirable advantages over pure PU materials,as the nanocomposites have enhanced thermal, surface, mechanical and biological properties. The main goal of this study was to develop a new kind of novel nanocomposites consisting of crosslinked PUs (based on poly(dimetylsiloxane) and hyperbranched polyester) and ferrite nanoparticles (based on copper and zinc) for possible application as coatings on biomedical devices and implants. A series of PU/ferrite nanocomposites was prepared by in situ polymerization in solution. Characterization of prepared nanocomposites nanocomposites was conducted by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Copper and zinc releases were investigated by microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry (MP-AES). Characteristics of the prepared nanocomposites when in contact with a biological environment were examined through testing their biocompatibility, and adhesion of fibroblast cells. The presence of the nanoferrite nanoparticles influenced on surface and biological properties of PU nanocomposites. The prepared PU nanocomposites with noncytotoxic chemistry could be used as promising materials for vascular implants development.

AB - The aim of this work is in situ anodization/anaphoretic deposition of a nano amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP)/chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL) multifunctional hybrid coating decorated with selenium (Se) on a titanium substrate and in vivo investigation of its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect. Investigating phenomena at the implant–tissue interface of interest for controlled inflammation and immunomodulation was also the aim of the research. In our earlier research, we designed coatings based on ACP and ChOL on titanium with anticorrosive, antibacterial and biocompatible properties, while in the presented results we show that selenium addition makes this coating an immunomodulator. The immunomodulatory effect of the novel hybrid coating is characterized by the examination of the functional aspects in the tissue around the implant (in vivo): proinflammatory cytokines’ gene expression, M1 (iNOS) and M2 (Arg1) macrophages, fibrous capsule formation (TGF-β) and vascularization (VEGF). The EDS, FTIR and XRD analyses prove the formation of a ACP/ChOL/Se multifunctional hybrid coating on Ti and the presence of Se. A higher M2/M1 macrophage ratio in the ACP/ChOL/Se-coated implants compared to pure titanium implants (a higher level of Arg1 expression) is noted at all time points examined (after 7, 14 and 28 days). Lower inflammation measured by gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF, lower expression of TGF-β in the surrounding tissue and higher IL-6 expression (solely at day 7 post-implantation) is noted in presence of the ACP/ChOL/Se-coated implants.

AB - Background: Titanium (Ti) is widely used in medical and dental implants. Calcium phosphate (CPs) coatings enhance Ti implants' osteoinductive properties, and additives further improve these coatings. Recently, a nano amorphous calcium phosphate (nACP) coating decorated with chitosane oligolactate (ChOL) and selenium (Se) showed immunomodulatory effects. This study investigates the surface morphology, composition, bioactivity, mechanical properties, and Se release mechanism of the nACP/ChOL/Se hybrid coating on Ti substrates. Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) was synthesized, and the ACP/ChOL/Se hybrid coating was deposited on Ti substrates using in situ anaphoretic deposition. Surface morphology was analyzed using SEM, AFM, XRD, and FTIR. The distribution of Se within the coating was examined with EDS. Bioactivity was evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF), and adhesion was tested using a scratch test method. In vitro testing determined the release mechanism of Se. SEM images illustrated the surface morphology, while AFM provided a detailed analysis of surface roughness. XRD analysis revealed structural and phase composition, and EDS confirmed Se distribution within the coating. The coating exhibited bioactivity in SBF and showed good adhesion according to the scratch test. In vitro testing uncovered the release mechanism of Se from the coating. This study successfully characterized the surface morphology, composition, bioactivity, and Se release mechanism of the
nACP/ChOL/Se hybrid coating on Ti substrates, offering insights for developing immunomodulatory coatings for medical and dental applications.

AB - The synthesis of 24 hybrid molecules, consisting of naturally occurring sclareol (SCL) and synthetic 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines (TPs), is described. New compounds were designed with the aim of improving the cytotoxic properties, activity, and selectivity of the parent compounds. Six analogs (12a-f) contained 4-benzylpiperazine linkage, while 4-benzyldiamine linkage was present in eighteen derivatives (12g-r and 13a-f). Hybrids 13a-f consist of two TP units. After purification, all hybrids (12a-r and 13a-f), as well as their precursors (9a-e and 11a-c), were tested on human glioblastoma U87 cells. More than half of the tested synthesized molecules, 16 out of 31, caused a significant reduction of U87 cell viability (more than 75% reduction) at 30 µM. The concentration-dependent cytotoxicity of these 16 compounds was also examined on U87 cells, corresponding multidrug-resistant (MDR) U87-TxR cells with increased P-glycoprotein (P-gp) expression and activity, and normal lung fibroblasts MRC-5. Importantly, 12l and 12r were active in the nanomolar range, while seven compounds (11b, 11c, 12i, 12l, 12n, 12q, and 12r) were more selective towards glioblastoma cells than SCL. All compounds except 12r evaded MDR, showing even better cytotoxicity in U87-TxR cells. In particular, 11c, 12a, 12g, 12j, 12k, 12m, 12n, and SCL showed collateral sensitivity. Hybrid compounds 12l, 12q, and 12r decreased P-gp activity to the same extent as a well-known P-gp inhibitor - tariquidar (TQ). Hybrid compound 12l and its precursor 11c affected different cellular processes including the cell cycle, cell death, and mitochondrial membrane potential, and changed the levels of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) in glioblastoma cells. Collateral sensitivity towards MDR glioblastoma cells was caused by the modulation of oxidative stress accompanied by inhibition of mitochondria.

The synthesized hybrid molecules (15a–f with ethylenediamine linker and 16a–k with piperazine linker), as well as their precursors – pyrimidine derivatives (13a–f and 14a–k), artemisinin, and artesunate, were tested on sensitive and multidrug-resistant (MDR) human non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cells. All hybrid compounds with piperazine linker 16a–k were selective toward NSCLC cells and displayed IC50 values below 5 μM. Although they showed similar anticancer potency as artesunate, their selectivity against cancer cells was considerably improved. Importantly, 16h–k hybrid compounds were able to evade MDR phenotype, inhibit P-glycoprotein (P-gp) activity, and increase the sensitivity of MDR NSCLC cells to doxorubicin (DOX). The inhibition of P-gp activity induced by 16h–j was stronger than the one obtained with artesunate. Among these four hybrid compounds, 16k was the most potent anticancer agent with similar IC50 values of around 1.5 μM (for comparison – over 3.1 μM for artesunate) in sensitive and MDR NSCLC cells.

AB - Nowadays, exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced from bacterial cells are manufactured for their use in different industries in the world, mainly in the food, pharmaceutical, and wastewater industries. The characteristics of EPS, such as being biodegradable, safe, high adsorption capacity, and reusable, make them significant and potential applications in the purification of contaminated water of heavy metals. In this study, the possible application in biosorption Ni2+ ions from contaminated water was assessed using this exopolysaccharide as a biosorbent. The new exopolysaccharide from the bacterial strain K. oxytoca J7 was extracted, isolated, and characterized using SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA/DTG, and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. Likewise, the cytotoxic activity was performed for EPS from K. oxytoca J7 strain. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible application of non-toxic exopolysaccharide in the purification of contaminated water by removing Ni2+ ions. The results obtained from the biosorption study showed that the Langmuir model is well suited to describe the adsorption process of Ni2+ ions by EPS from K. oxytoca J7, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 269.97 mg g–1. The importance of this study is the possible use of natural nontoxic exopolysaccharide extracted from the pathogen microorganism, K. oxytoca J7, for the removal of Ni2+ ions from the contaminated water.

AB - In this study we have reported the chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from the needles of twelve Pinus taxa, belonging to the subgenera Pinus (sections Pinus and Trifoliae) and Strobus (sect. Quinquefoliae). Monoterpenes dominated over sesquiterpenes in most of the investigated taxa of both subgenera, except in representatives of the subsection Pinaster, subgenus Pinus. α-Pinene was the most abundant terpene in eight pines, but other dominant terpenes were found in some taxa - trans-caryophyllene, germacrene D, abietadiene and β-pinene. In the subsect. Pinaster, the most dominant compounds varied from species to species. In addition, P. halepensis and P. pinaster had the highest percentage of diterpenes, while P. heldreichii was the richest in germacrene D. In the PCA and cluster analyses, three species from the subsect. Pinaster emerged as the most distant: P. halepensis, P. pinaster, and P. heldreichii. In addition, the possible taxonomic implications of the terpene profile in the analysed Pinus taxa were also discussed.

AB - Sexual dysfunction, as a noticeable adverse effect of atypical antipsychotic drugs (APDs)
for the treatment of schizophrenia, has not been investigated in detail. A study was undertaken
to investigate whether 28-day long treatment with clozapine, ziprasidone or sertindole (using a
recommended daily dose for atypical antipsychotic therapy), induced histopathological changes
both in rat testicles and prostate, changed the activity of the antioxidant defence system and altered blood testosterone and prolactin. Clozapine, ziprasidone and sertindole induced histopathological changes in rat testicular tissue, which could be attributed to a disturbed testicular antioxidant defence system in addition to an altered prolactin to testosterone ratio. None of the APD treatments induced histopathological changes in prostate. Our results demonstrate that APDs have the capacity to change both redox and endocrinological balance. One or both outcomes could underline testicular degeneration and disturbed spermatogenesis.

AB - This study presents a detailed characterization of 27 honey samples from the Tara Mountain region in Serbia using different comprehensive techniques and methods. The types of the honey samples were defined as monofloral (4 samples), honeydew (5 samples) and polyfloral (18 samples) honey based on determined polyphenol content, antioxidant activity, electrical conductivity and melissopalynological analyses. Physicochemical parameters such as pH (4.13–4.94), diastase activity (24.20–41.70 DN), acidity (14.60–29.70 meq/kg), content of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (in range below 5, up to 16.90 mg/kg), sucrose (0.20–3.90 g/100 g), and moisture content (15.01–19.23%) confirmed the required quality of the honey samples. Sensory analysis revealed honey characteristics favorable to consumers. Analyses of 19 phenolic compounds using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode-array detection and triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD-MS/MS) revealed six phenolic acids and 13 other compounds from the group of flavonoids and their glycosides. In all the samples the highest content was determined for p-coumaric acid, followed by caffeic acid and pinocembrin. Besides total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity, antimicrobial activity was also examined. Most honey samples showed bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and bacteriostatic activity against Escherichia coli, while none of the honey samples inhibited the growth of Candida albicans. Chemometric analyses were applied for an in-depth study of the results to further evaluate the characteristics of the honey samples studied. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used for assessing the differences in physicochemical parameters, polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity between honey samples. The unrooted cluster tree was used to group the samples based on the melissopalynological analyses.

AB - Raspberries are considered valuable fruits due to their high levels of nutrients and phytochemicals, which have many beneficial effects on humans. As many external factors affect the composition of these fruits (the type of cultivation, soil characteristics, ripeness, storage time and post-harvest technologies, cultivar/genotype, and climatic conditions), the goal of this study was to analyze different raspberry cultivars grown in Norway. Considering that Norway is a country with specific climatic conditions, as well as has a limited period of fruit vegetation, another important goal of this study was also to compare raspberries from different Norwegian areas, as well as different grown cultivars. Modern analytical techniques, such as high-performance anion-exchange liquid chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPEAC-PAD), ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD MS/MS), and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), provided a detailed examination of the raspberry extract samples. Based on their high levels of minerals (especially N, P, and K), organic acids (predominantly citric and malic acids), sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose, and galactose), and polyphenols (ellagic acid, syringic acid, quercetin, and rutin), Norwegian raspberries could be considered fruits with increased health-beneficial compounds. The chemical composition of the studied cultivars depended on the locality of growth.

AB - Using modern analytical techniques, a comprehensive study of the chemical composition of fruits from apple cultivars grown in Western Norway during 2019 and 2020 was done. Metals, sugars, organic acids, antioxidant tests, and polyphenol content have been observed. In all investigated samples, the most dominant sugars were glucose, fructose, and sucrose. Among 11 tested organic acids, the dominant was malic acid, followed by citric and maleic acid. The most common metal was potassium, followed by magnesium and zinc. The quantification of polyphenols showed that among the 11 quantified polyphenols, chlorogenic acid, quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside, quercetin 3-O-glucoside, quercetin, and phlorizin were the most abundant. A detailed study of the polyphenolic profile of nine investigated apple samples provided 30 identified polyphenolic compounds from the class of hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, and dihydrochalcones. In addition to the identified 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid, its two isomers of 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid and three esters were also found. Present polyphenols of the tested apples provided significant data on the quality of Norwegian apples, and they contribute to the distinguishing of these apple samples.

AB - Biological activity of 2-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (TBQ) and its derivatives, 2-tert-butyl-5-(2-propylthio)-1,4-benzoquinone, 2-tert-butyl-5- -(propylthio)-1,4-benzoquinone, 2-tert-butyl-5,6-(ethylenedithio)-1,4-benzoquinone, 2-tert-butyl-5-(phenylthio)-1,4-benzoquinone and 2-tert-butyl-6-(phenylthio)- 1,4-benzoquinone, were tested for their antioxidant, antibacterial, toxic, cytotoxic and genotoxic potential. Using the DPPH test, all derivatives showed good antioxidant activity, better than ascorbic acid, and the 2-tert- -butyl-5-(propylthio)-1,4-benzoquinone derivative showed the strongest effect. Better antibacterial potential was observed against Gram-positive bacteria in the broth microdilution method in which the 2-tert-butyl-5-(phenylthio)-1,4- -benzoquinone derivative showed the strongest activity (MIC = 15.6 μM). The results of toxicity tests, using the Brine shrimp test, indicated that the derivatives lose their toxic potential compared to TBQ, except for 2-tert-butyl-6- -(phenylthio)-1,4-benzoquinone, which showed a 3 times stronger effect. Cytotoxicity was assessed by the MTT assay in 24 and 72 h treatments in MRC-5, HS 294T and A549 cell lines in threefold decreasing gradient (11, 33 and 100 μM). Modifications potentiate the cytotoxic effect, and the strongest effect was observed with the 2-tert-butyl-5,6-(ethylendithio)-1,4-benzoquinone derivative. In addition, the genotoxic potential was examined in the MRC-5 cell line using the comet assay. All tested derivatives of TBQ showed a genotoxic effect at all applied subtoxic concentrations. In general, the chemical modifications of TBQ enhanced its biological activity.

AB - In the previous study fifteen jatrophane diterpenes were isolated from the Euphorbia nicaeensis latex. Fourteen of them have been shown to be potent P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibitor in two MDR cancer cells (NCI-H460/R and DLD1-TxR). The aim of this study was to determine whether and which jatrophane diterpenes can be isolated from the root of the plant, and then to examine their inhibition power on P-glycoprotein of selected cancer cell lines (NCI-H460, DLD1, U87, NCI-H460/R, DLD1-TxR and U87-TxR). Two previously undescribed jatrophane diterpenes were isolated from the root of E. nicaeensis collected in Deliblato Sand (Serbia). The structures of the isolated compounds were determined using 1D and 2D NMR, as well as HRESIMS data. The results obtained by MTT assay showed different antitumor potential of these two jatrophanes. Compound 1 inhibited cell growth of non-small cell lung carcinoma cell lines NCI-H460 and NCI-H460/R, as well as glioblastoma cell lines U87 and U87-TxR, while jatrophane 2 was almost completely inactive in the suppression of cancer cell growth in a given range of concentrations. The obtained results also showed that the isolated compounds have an inhibitory effect on P-glycoprotein, as well as that their inhibitory potential is similar.

The obtained results also showed that the isolated compounds have an inhibitory effect on P-glycoprotein, as well as that their inhibitory potential is similar.,

AB - Flower strips of French Marigold are commonly used pest repellents in potato fields. However, the effect of French Marigold volatiles on potato metabolism, physiology and induced defense is unknown. Thus, a microarray transcriptome analysis was performed to study the effects of French Marigold essential oil (EO) on laboratory-grown potato. After 8 h of exposure to EO, with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)-detected terpinolene and limonene as dominant compounds, 2796 transcripts were differentially expressed with fold change >2 compared to expression in controls. A slightly higher number of transcripts had suppressed expression (1493 down-vs. 1303 up-regulated). Since transcripts, annotated to different photosynthesis-related processes, were mostly down-regulated, we selected a set of 10 genes involved in the leaf starch metabolism pathway, and validated microarray patterns using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Except for decreased synthesis and induced decomposition of starch granule in leaves, 8 h long EO exposure slightly elevated the accumulation of sucrose compared to glucose and fructose in subjected potato plants. An in vitro feeding bioassay with Colorado potato beetle showed that EO-induced alternations on transcriptional level and in the sugars’ metabolism caused the enhancement of feeding behavior and overall development of the tested larvae. Results of comprehensive analysis of transcriptional responses in potato exposed to French Marigold EO provide a basis for further elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying eco-physiological interactions in companion planting cropping systems.

AB - We investigated the ability of graphene quantum dot (GQD) nanoparticles to protect SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells from oxidative/nitrosative stress induced by iron-nitrosyl complex sodium nitroprusside (SNP).
GQD reduced SNP cytotoxicity by preventing mitochondrial depolarization, caspase-2 activation, and subsequent apoptotic death. Although GQD diminished the levels of nitric oxide (NO) in SNP-exposed cells, NO scavengers displayed only a slight protective effect, suggesting that NO quenching was not the main protective mechanism of GQD. GQD also reduced SNP-triggered increase in the intracellular levels of hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide anion (O2•- ), and lipid peroxidation. Nonselective antioxidants, •OH scavenging, and iron chelators, but not superoxide dismutase, mimicked GQD cytoprotective activity, indicating that GQD protect cells by neutralizing •OH generated in the presence of SNP-released iron. Cellular internalization of GQD was required for optimal protection, since a removal of extracellular GQD by extensive washing only partly diminished their protective effect. Moreover, GQD cooperated with SNP to induce autophagy, as confirmed by the inhibition of autophagylimiting Akt/PRAS40/mTOR signaling and increase in autophagy gene transcription, protein levels of proautophagic beclin-1 and LC3-II, formation of autophagic vesicles, and degradation of autophagic target p62. The antioxidant activity of GQD was not involved in autophagy induction, as antioxidants N-acetylcysteine and dimethyl sulfoxide failed to stimulate autophagy in SNP-exposed cells. Pharmacological inhibitors of early (wortmannin, 3-methyladenine) or late stages of autophagy (NH4Cl) efficiently reduced the protective effect of GQD. Therefore, the ability of GQD to prevent the in vitro neurotoxicity of SNP depends on both •OH/NO scavenging and induction of cytoprotective autophagy.

AB - Concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and
Zn) were measured in topsoil samples collected from parks in the cities of Salzburg (Austria),
Thessaloniki (Greece), and Belgrade (Serbia) in order to assess the distribution of PTEs in the urban
environment, discriminate natural (lithogenic) and anthropogenic contributions, identify possible
sources of pollution, and compare levels of pollution between the cities. An assessment of the
health risks caused by exposure to PTEs through different pathways was also conducted. The
study revealed that, with the exception of Pb in Salzburg, levels of PTEs in the soils in polluted
urban parks were higher than in unpolluted ones, but still lower than those recorded in other
European soils. Results of sequential analyses showed that Al, Cr, and Ni were found in residual
phases, proving their predominantly lithogenic origin and their low mobility. In contrast, the
influence of anthropogenic factors on Cu, Pb, and Zn was evident. Site-dependent variations showed
that the highest concentrations of As, Cu, Pb, and Zn of anthropogenic origin were recorded in
Salzburg, while the highest levels of Al, Cr, and Ni of lithogenic origin were recorded in Belgrade
and Thessaloniki, which reflects the specificity of the geological substrates. Results obtained for the
health risk assessment showed that no human health risk was found for either children or adults.

Results obtained for the
health risk assessment showed that no human health risk was found for either children or adults.",

AB - Duckweed (L. minor) is a cosmopolitan aquatic plant of simplified morphology and rapid vegetative reproduction. In this study, an H. paralvei bacterial strain and its influence on the antioxida-tive response of the duckweeds to phenol, a recalcitrant environmental pollutant, were investigated. Sterile duckweed cultures were inoculated with H. paralvei in vitro and cultivated in the presence or absence of phenol (500 mg L−1 ), in order to investigate bacterial effects on plant oxidative stress during 5 days. Total soluble proteins, guaiacol peroxidase expression, concentration of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde as well as the total ascorbic acid of the plants were monitored. Moreover, bacterial production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was measured in order to investigate H. paralvei’s influence on plant growth. In general, the addition of phenol elevated all biochemical parameters in L. minor except AsA and total soluble proteins. Phenol as well as bacteria influenced the expression of guaiacol peroxidase. Different isoforms were associated with phenol compared to isoforms expressed in phenol-free medium. Considering that duckweeds showed increased antioxidative parameters in the presence of phenol, it can be assumed that the measured parameters might be involved in the plant’s defense system. H. paralvei is an IAA producer and its presence in the rhizosphere of duckweeds decreased the oxidative stress of the plants, which can be taken as evidence that this bacterial strain acts protectively on the plants during phenol exposure.

AB - The objective of this study was to test four-dimensional LC-ESI-MS/MS chromatography in analysis of complex mixture such as ethanol extracts of different propolis samples. In total more than 1200 picks were identified and only for 185 literature conformation was found. The given data represent the result of tentative identification, and summarized results are given in the text. Comparing the samples, from different altitudes, 96 components were detected as characteristic in high altitude samples and 18 in samples collected at low altitudes. Antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts of propolis (EEP) and propylene glycol extracts of propolis (PGEP) were carried out on S. aureus, B. cereus, M. flavus, L. monocytogenes, P. aeruginosa, S. typhimurium, E. coli and E. cloacae bacterial strains and compared with broad-spectrum antibiotics, streptomycin and ampicillin. Anti-quorum sensing activity was performed on P. aeruginosa by testing the effect of representative propolis extracts on biofilm formation, twitching and motility activity and production of pyocyanin. We demonstrated that the majority of explored propolis extracts have greater or equal minimal inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration values compared to antibiotics, independently of the solvent used for the extraction. The samples collected from the highest altitude emerged as least active antimicrobial agents but with the greatest potential as anti-quorum sensing agents.

AB - The phenolic and elemental profiles of Serbian autochthonous grape varieties ‘Smederevka’ and ‘Plovdina’ were studied and compared with some international varieties. Total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity were highest in seeds of ‘Plovdina’, and in ‘Smederevka’ skins, which also had the highest contents of ferulic, chlorogenic and caffeic acids (16.0, 1.44 and 0.98 mg/kg, respectively). Protocatechuic acid was quantified only in the seeds of these varieties. Untypically for Vitis vinifera L. species, the presence of malvidin 3,5-O-dihexoside was found in the skins of ‘Vranac’ and ‘Muscat Hamburg’. In ‘Plovdina’ skins among the anthocyanins, hexosides of peonidin and delphinidin were prevalent. ‘Plovdina’ grapes had lower quantities of Al, Ni and Na in comparison to the other varieties intended for white wine production. Significant correlations among the most abundant elements, such as K, P, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Cu, and Zn, pointed to potential positive interactions. For elements that have toxicological reference values, the health risk assessment was calculated for adults and children, and suggested that all samples were safe for human consumption.
