AB - In this investigation, the possibility of wood waste (hardwoods such as oaks' and alternatives' staves from Balkan cooperage) revalorization for simultaneous cadmium removal and wastewater disinfection was examined. All samples were characterized in terms of their crystallinity index and crystallite size, amount of functional groups, and surface chemistry (determined by ATR-FTIR) as well as antibacterial activity. Mulberry is characterized by the lowest crystallinity index which can be ascribed to the highest crystallite size disabling crystallite denser packaging, while myrobalan plum has about 23% lower crystallite size that enables crystallite better packaging, thus resulting in a 42.4% higher crystallinity index compared to the mulberry. All oaks have a significantly higher amount of carboxyl groups compared to the alternatives (0.23-0.28 vs. 0.12-0.19 mmol/g). The adsorption experiments revealed that with increasing the initial cadmium concentration from 15 up to 55 mg/g, samples' adsorption capacity increases by 89-220%. The equilibrium data fit well with the Langmuir isotherm model implying monolayer coverage of cadmium ions over a homogeneous wood surface. The relationship between the samples' maximum adsorption capacities (ranged from 5.726 to 12.618 mg/g), their crystallinity index, and crystallite size was established. According to ATR-FTIR spectra, aldehyde, carboxyl, hydroxyl, and phenyl groups present on the wood waste surface are involved in Cd2+ adsorption which proceeds via the interplay of the complexation, cation-π interactions, and ion-exchange mechanisms. Mulberry and myrobalan plum showed about 89% and 80% of the total uptake capacity of cadmium within 60 min, while the equilibrium was attained after 240 min of contact time. Good compliance with pseudo-second kinetic order indicated that cadmium adsorption was mediated by chemical forces. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the spontaneous and exothermic character of cadmium ion adsorption onto mulberry and myrobalan plum. All studied samples provide maximum bacterial reduction (>99%) for E. coli and S. aureus. Wood waste from Balkan cooperage can be successfully used for simultaneous cadmium removal and wastewater disinfection.

AB - The ageing in contact with wood is an important process for improving the aroma, color, taste and astringency of some high-quality alcoholic beverages. One of the important changes is extraction of volatile compounds (i.e. extractable compounds and gradually transformed wooden constituents) as a result of the interaction between compounds present in wood and alcoholic beverages. The aim of this study was to obtain volatile profiles of seasoned wood stave extracts and find potential markers for wood species. The following species were investigated: mulberry (Morus alba L.), Myrobalan plum (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), wild cherry (Prunus avium (L.) L.) and oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl., and Q. robur L.). Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used for qualitative and quantitative analyzes of the wood extracts, respectively. The volatile profiles of oak and other wood species were significantly different. Some of the identified compounds were proposed as potential markers for the identification of the specific wood. Oak samples were characterized by presence of many compounds, such as oak lactones, vinylguaiacol, eugenol, vanillin, propiovanillone, homovanillic acid, methyl homovanillate, syringyl propan-2-one, butyrosyringone and dihydrosynapil alcohol. In addition, isoeugenol was characteristic for pedunculate oak from Gornji Radan. On the other hand, the following compounds were characteristic of other wood samples: methylresorcinol and coumaran (mulberry); resacetophenone and o-acetyl-p-cresol (black locust); benzoic acid, 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid and scopoletin (Myrobalan plum); sakuranin, chrysin, tectochrysin, naringenin, pinocembrin and 2,6-dimethoxybenzoquinone and acetophenone (wild cherry). Sakuranin could be considered as potential marker for wild cherry. Our findings could be used for authenticity of wood species used for cooperage, as well as for reducing fraudulent production.

AB - The phenolic and elemental profiles of Serbian autochthonous grape varieties ‘Smederevka’ and ‘Plovdina’ were studied and compared with some international varieties. Total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity were highest in seeds of ‘Plovdina’, and in ‘Smederevka’ skins, which also had the highest contents of ferulic, chlorogenic and caffeic acids (16.0, 1.44 and 0.98 mg/kg, respectively). Protocatechuic acid was quantified only in the seeds of these varieties. Untypically for Vitis vinifera L. species, the presence of malvidin 3,5-O-dihexoside was found in the skins of ‘Vranac’ and ‘Muscat Hamburg’. In ‘Plovdina’ skins among the anthocyanins, hexosides of peonidin and delphinidin were prevalent. ‘Plovdina’ grapes had lower quantities of Al, Ni and Na in comparison to the other varieties intended for white wine production. Significant correlations among the most abundant elements, such as K, P, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Cu, and Zn, pointed to potential positive interactions. For elements that have toxicological reference values, the health risk assessment was calculated for adults and children, and suggested that all samples were safe for human consumption.

AB - Apple production generates large amounts of apple pomace including seeds, leading to high transportation costs, public health hazards and undesirable odor. A new reuse strategy of this kind of waste could solve environmental issues and/or create unconventional sources of health beneficial products. In total, seeds from 75 apple cultivars grown in Norway (both domestic and international) have been analyzed for the first time for oil content and fatty acid profile together with tocopherols and carotenoids quantification in defatted seeds. Seeds from cultivar Håkonseple had the highest oil content (22.10%), with linoleic, oleic acid, and palmitic acid as the most abundant fatty acids. The levels of β-carotene and lycopene carotenoids and α-tocopherol were the highest in defatted seeds of the cultivar Sureple Grøn. Principal component analysis separated cultivars according to the total oil content. The Norwegian apple cultivars Håkonseple, Kviteple, Tolleivseple, Vinterrosenstrips, and Tokheimseple are recommended for obtaining vegetable oil due to their high oil contents, while cultivar Sureple Grøn can be separated due to its high levels of β-carotene, lycopene and total tocopherols.

The Norwegian apple cultivars Håkonseple, Kviteple, Tolleivseple, Vinterrosenstrips, and Tokheimseple are recommended for obtaining vegetable oil due to their high oil contents, while cultivar Sureple Grøn can be separated due to its high levels of β-carotene, lycopene and total tocopherols.",

AB - The study was designed to investigate chemical composition and kernel quality of almond cultivars ‘Troito’, ‘Marcona’ and ‘Texas’ grafted on Myrobalan plum seedlings and ‘GF 677’ rootstock under drought stress. Oil content varied from 53.34% (‘Marcona’) to 58.11% (‘Texas’), and protein content was in a range from 17.36% (‘Texas’) to 23.02% (‘Troito’). ‘GF 677’ contributed to a higher content of oleic and lower content of linoleic acid during favourable conditions but had the opposite trend during drought. Regarding flavanols, the most abundant in all three cultivars was epigalocatechin, followed by catechin. From the results it is concluded that scions on ‘GF 677’ were better adapted to water stress conditions in comparison with Myrobalan plum seedlings as they had significantly higher kernel weight, kernel ratio, and yield per tree. Also, kernel quality attributes, contents of proteins, oleic acid, and oleic acid/linoleic acid ratio were higher, while the content of amandin decreased. Furthermore, an increase of flavanols (especially epigallocatechin gallate) on ‘GF 677’ could have led to the enhancement of drought tolerance. Besides the fact that water deficit decreased the majority of chemical components in almond kernels, the grafting combination ‘Texas’/’GF 677’ can be grown in drought conditions without significant loss of kernel quality.

AB - In the production of some alcoholic beverages one of the most important practices is theageing process in a presence of wood. This process contributes to improved sensorycharacteristics such as aroma, color, taste and astringency. Although oak heartwood isthe most used material in cooperage, other species such as chestnut, cherry, and mulberrycan be also considered. Currently, limited published data are available on the mineralcontent of the wood extract from cooperage industry, although some research was doneto investigate the content of heavy metals in alcoholic beverages1, especially in wine2.Daily consumption of the wine and brandy with an elevated content of heavy metalsmight cause chronical poisoning. To avoid this issue, the maximum allowableconcentration (MAC, mg L–1) in fruit brandies were established for lead, zinc, arsenium, and copper.1The aim of this research was to investigate elemental composition of ethanolic extracts, obtained from alternative wood species used in Balkan cooperage, such as mulberry(Morus alba L.), Myrobalan plum (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.), black locust (Robiniapseudoacacia L.), and wild cherry (Prunus avium (L.) L.). Elements were determined byinductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Results indicatedthat the elemental composition of wild cherry extract was much lower than in other nonoakwood extracts, and all investigated wood extracts have lower content of traceelements than maximum allowable concentration in fruit brandies.

AB - Nicotine degradation efficiency in water solutions was studied using a water falling film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. Two different treatments were applied: direct treatment, the recirculation of the solution through a DBD reactor, and indirect treatment, the bubbling of the gas from the DBD through the porous filter into the solution. In a separate experiment, samples spiked with nicotine in double distilled water (ddH(2)O) and tap water were studied and compared after both treatments. Furthermore, the effects of the homogeneous catalysts, namely, Fe2+ and H2O2, were tested in the direct treatment. Nicotine degradation efficiency was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. A degradation efficiency of 90% was achieved after the direct treatment catalyzed with Fe2+. In order to analyze the biodegradability, mineralization level, and toxicity of the obtained solutions, after all degradation procedures the values of the following parameters were determined: total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, and the Artemia salina toxicity test. The results showed that an increase in biodegradability was obtained, after all treatments. A partial nicotine mineralization was achieved and the mortality of the A. salina organism decreased in the treated samples, all of which indicating the effective removal of nicotine and the creation of less toxic solutions. Nicotine degradation products were identified using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a linear ion trap Orbitrap hybrid mass spectrometer and a simple mechanism for oxidative degradation of nicotine in non-thermal plasma systems is proposed.

AB - This research was designed to determine phenolics content, radical scavenging activity and mineral composition of 22 grapevine leaves of diverse varietal origin. Samples were collected from two vineyards located in Central Serbia (Belgrade vineyard area) and Eastern Serbia (Mlava vineyard area). Leaf extracts were characterized mostly with phenolics acids, flavonols and flavan-3-ols. Ellagic acid and rutin were the most abundant components, found in the concentration up to 770 mg/kg and 450 mg/kg of dry weight, respectively. Total phenolic content was in the range from 27.5 to 76.0 g GAE/kg of dry weight while the radical scavenging activity ranged from 0.429 to 0.867 mmol TE/kg of dry weight. The most common element in all samples was IC (content ranging from 2.30 g/kg to 6.77 g/kg of dry weight), followed by Ca, Na, and B. A variation in the chemical composition was shown to be convenient way to differentiate among the grape leaves of diverse varietal origin. Clear separation was demonstrated between objects of different geographical origin by Principal Component Analysis. Serbian variety 'Petra', an interspecies hybrid with atypical composition, was detected as an outlier in comparison to other samples.

AB - In this study we analysed mineral composition of bee pollen of different plant origin collected across Serbia using inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry. The most abundant elements were potassium, calcium, and magnesium. The samples were also exceptionally rich in iron and zinc, which are very important as nutrients. Judging by our findings, mineral composition of bee pollen much more depends on the type of pollen-producing plant than on its geographical origin.

AB - Experimental results of non-thermal plasma (NTP) utilization for degradation of 4-chlorphenol (4CP) with screening of toxicity were presented in this study. Degradation of 4CP was tested in the presence of homogeneous catalysts: hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and iron (II) (Fe2+). The rate of degradation through eight consecutive passes of the 4CP solution in the NTP reactor was considered. Products of degradation as organic acids (acetic, formic or oxalic acid) and chloride were quantified using ion chromatography (IC). Anemia salina was used for the toxicity screening assay in order to estimate the potential and consequences of NTP reactor application in water treatment. The measured concentration of 4CP and degradation products confirmed very efficient removal of these substances from the water during the NTP treatment with the addition of a catalyst. Concerning bioassay, a significant difference in toxicity was determined between initial solution of 4CP in comparison with the solution exposed to catalytic NTP treatment.

AB - This paper was aimed at characterizing the wine obtained from Oblacinska, a native sour cherry cultivar. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper with the most comprehensive information on chemical characterization of Oblacinska sour cherry wine. The chemical composition was characterized by hyphenated chromatographic methods and traditional analytical techniques. A total of 24 compounds were quantified using the available standards and another 22 phenolic compounds were identified based on the accurate mass spectrographic search. Values of total phenolics content, total anthocyanin content, and radical scavenging activity for cherry wine sample were 1.938 mg gallic acid eqv L-1, 0.113 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside L-1, and 34.56%, respectively. In general, cherry wine polyphenolics in terms of nonanthocyanins and anthocyanins were shown to be distinctive when compared to grape wines. Naringenin and apigenin were characteristic only for cherry wine, and seven anthocyanins were distinctive for cherry wine.

AB - Total phenolic content (TPC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), free and total ellagic acid content, sugars, minerals, and radical scavenging activity were determined in nine berries harvested in Serbia. More than 30 phenolic compounds. were identified; among them, 11 polyphenols and cis,trans-abscisic acid were quantified using UHPLC coupled with an LTQ: Orbitrap XL mass analyzer. For the first time chrysin, naringenin, pinocembrin, and galangin were quantified in some of the investigated berry species. The extraction efficiency of the two extraction systems, methanol and acetone, was investigated. It was found that acetone is a better extracting solvent for TPC, whereas more TAC was extracted by methanol. TPC in acetone extracts ranged from 177.51 to 459.71 mg gallic acid equiv/100 g frozen weight. TAC ranged from 5.39 to 96.94 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside/100 g frozen weight in methanol extracts. The amounts of both free and total ellagic acid were found to be higher in the acetone extract in comparison to the methanol extract.

AB - Four lipophilicity descriptors (R-M(0), b, C-0 and PCl) for twelve coumarin derivatives were determined by reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography in order to analyze the descriptor which best describes the lipophilicity of the investigated coumarins. Moreover, possible chemical toxicity of coumarins, expressed as the probability of a compound to cause organ-specific health effects, was calculated using ACD/Tox Suite program. The quantitative relationships between toxicity and molecular descriptors, including experimentally determined lipophilicity descriptors obtained in current study were investigated using partial least square regression. The best models were obtained for kidney and liver health effects. Quantitative structure-toxicity relationship models revealed the importance of electric polarization descriptors, size descriptors and lipophilicity descriptors. The obtained models were used for the selection of the structural features of the compounds that are significantly affecting their absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity.

AB - The lipophilic character of twelve coumarins was investigated by reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (RP TLC) on RP-18 silica. The three different binary solvent systems composed of water and organic modifier (methanol, tetrahydrofuran or acetonitrile) were used in order to determine retention parameter (R-M(0)) and octanol-water partition coefficient (log P-OW) as a measure of the lipophilicity of the tested compounds. Lipophilicity parameter (log P-OW) was experimentally determined using eight standard solutes with known log P-OW values which were analyzed under the same chromatographic conditions as the target substances. Lipophilicity parameters together with 2D molecular descriptors were subjected to the multivariate statistical analysis (principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square (PLS) regression) in order to reveal the most influential factors governing the retention, i.e., lipophilicity of the investigated compounds. The quantitative structure-retention relationship models reveal the importance of descriptors which describe the size and the shape of the molecule as well as their polar properties.

AB - A thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) method with densitometric detection was established for the quantification of p-chlorophenol in wastewater. Degradation efficiency of p-chlorophenol was monitored after each treatment of the wastewater samples. Degradation of p-chlorophenol was performed by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), using UV, H2O2/UV, O3/H2O2/UV, O3 and O3/UV. The developed TLC procedure was found to be simple, rapid and precise. The method is characterized by high sensitivity (the limit of detection was 11 ng per band and limit of quantification 35 ng per band), a linear range from 75 to 500 ng per band, r = 0.9965), and high precision, accuracy (mean percentage recovery 98.6 %), and specificity. Additionally, the efficiency of degradation was monitored using HPLC giving comparable results with the reversed phase TLC measurements.

AB - A quantitative structure-retention relationship (QSRR) was built to investigate the relationship between the structural descriptors of 23 newly synthesized N-substituted 2-alkylidene-4-oxothiazolidines and their chromatographic retention. Retention was investigated by means of the reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (RP-TLC) on the C(18) and CN stationary phases, using methanol, acetonitrile, and tetrahydrofuran as organic modifiers. Full geometry optimization based on the Austin Model 1 (AM1) semi-empirical molecular orbital method was carried out and a set of physicochemical molecular descriptors was calculated from the optimized structures. QSRR was built by means of multiple linear regression (MLR) and partial least squares regression (PLS). The best MLR and PLS models were chosen, on the basis of comparison of the statistical parameters (squared correlation coefficient (R(2)), cross-validated coefficient (R(cv)(2)), and Fischer significance value (F) were used for MLR and the square of the multiple correlation coefficients for the calibration objects (R(2)Y (cum)) and the square of the multiple correlation coefficients for the cross-validation segments (Q(2)Y (cum)) were used for PLS models). Statistically significant and physically meaningful QSRR provided better insight on understanding the retention behavior of the new series of compounds. Lipohilicity (expressed as log P) was included in all MLR and PLS models.

AB - The chromatographic behavior of 23 new 2-alkylidene-4-oxothiazolidine derivatives was investigated by means of the reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (RP TLC) on the C18 and CN stationary phases. Binary mixtures of methanol-water, acetonitrile-water, and tetrahydrofuran-water were used as mobile phases. Linear relationships between the volume fraction of the organic mobile phase modifier and the RM values were established for each solute with high correlation coefficient values (r0.99). The investigated 4-oxothiazolidines are a congeneric set of compounds, and significant correlations were obtained between the chromatographically determined [image omitted] and m values. The lipophilicity parameters obtained from the reversed-phase experiments were compared with the calculated log P values. Some of these correlations offer very good predicting models, which are important for a better understanding of the relationships between chemical structure and retention, and can prove helpful in the structure-activity studies as well. Finally, our investigation was focused on chemometric processing of the retention data in different chromatographic systems. To this effect, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was performed, yielding the results helpful in interpretation of interactions among investigated substances, binary mobile phases, and the two different stationary phases.

To this effect, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was performed, yielding the results helpful in interpretation of interactions among investigated substances, binary mobile phases, and the two different stationary phases.",

AB - In this study 10 guaianolide-type sesquiterpene γ-lactones named amphoricarpolides, isolated from the aerial parts of two endemic subspecies of Amphoricarpos neumayeri (ssp. neumayeri and ssp. murbeckii Bosnjak), were investigated by means of reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography. Methanol-water and tetrahydrofuran-water binary mixtures were used as mobile phase in order to determine lipophilicity parameters and C0. Some of the investigated compounds were screened for their cytotoxic activity against HeLa and B16 cells. Chromatographically obtained lipophilicity parameters were correlated with calculated logP values and IC50 values. Principal component analysis identified the dominant pattern in the chromatographically obtained data. Copyright

AB - The chromatographic behavior of three biocidal technical materials, rodenticide active ingredients brodifacoum, bromadiolone, and coumatetralyl, and impurities present in the technical material was investigated by both normal-phase (NP) and reversed-phase (RP) planar chromatography. The research was carried out using thin-layers of silica gel, alumina, cellulose, and C-18 silica. Several solvents on their own or in various combinations and proportions were used for separation. The optimum chromatographic systems for separation of the substances from each other and from their impurities were selected. Under reversed-phase chromatographic (RPC) conditions a linear correlation between R-M values and mobile phase composition was established. From results obtained, the lipophilicity R-M(o) and C-0 were determined. Possible separation mechanisms are discussed on the basis of the established retention behavior.

AB - The lipophilicity of a series of Schiff base ligands and their complexes with nickel(II) and copper(II) has been determined by reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography using binary dioxane-water mobile phase. Chelate ligands were prepared by condensation of diamine and the corresponding β-diketone. Copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes with chelate ligands containing ethane-1,2-diamine or propane-1,2-diamine as the amine part and pentane-2,4-dione and/or 1-phenylbutane-1,3-dione, pentane-2,4-dione and/or 1,1,1-trifluoropentane-2,4-dione, or 1,1,1-trifluoropentane-2,4-dione and/or 1-phenylbutane-1,3-dione as the β-diketone part were synthesized. Some of investigated compounds were screened for their in vitro antifungal activity against Sacharomyces cerevisiae and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. Chromatographically obtained lipophilicity parameters were correlated both with calculated n-octanol-water partition coefficient C log P and antimicrobial activities. Satisfactory correlations were obtained. Chromatographic data proved to be reliable parameters for describing the lipophilic properties of the investigated compounds. Additionally, the principal components analysis was performed on the data chromatographically obtained. This statistical method was useful for distinguishing compounds and objective comparison of their lipophilicity parameters. Copyright
