AB - Many of modern technologies require materials with unusual combinations of properties that cannot be met by the conventional metal alloys, ceramics, and polymeric materials. Material property combinations and ranges have been extended by the development of composite materials. Development of Nd-Fe-B/polymer composite magnetic materials has significantly increased interest in research and development of bonded magnets, since particles of Nd-Fe-B alloys are proved to be very suitable for their production. This study investigates the mechanical and magnetic properties of compression molded Nd-Fe-B magnets with different content of magnetic powder in epoxy matrix. Mechanical properties were investigated at ambient temperature according to ASTM standard D 3039-00. The obtained results show that tensile strength and elongation decrease with an increase of Nd-Fe-B particles content in epoxy matrix. The modulus of elasticity increases, which means that in exploitation material with higher magnetic powder content, subjected to the same level of stress, undergoes 2 to 3.5 times smaller deformation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the morphology of sample surfaces and fracture surfaces caused by the tensile strength tests. The results of SQUID magnetic measurements show an increase of magnetic properties of the investigated composites with increasing content of Nd-Fe-B particles.

AB - The Co-Ni-MoxOy powders were obtained electrochemically at a constant current density from ammonia electrolyte. Ni and Co were anomalously deposited, inducing Mo deposition, which cannot be deposited separately from aqueous solutions. The obtained Co-Ni-MoxOy powders were investigated by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electon microscope (SEM) methods. Based on the obtained experimental results, it was concluded that the particle size of deposited powders is influenced by the chemical composition of the electrolyte and current density imposed. XRD results suggested that obtained powders were of amorphous structure, although a Co3Mo compound can be formed if certain experimental conditions are applied.

AB - One of the more important developments in magnetic materials, polymer bonded magnets, have opened a new world of application opportunities. The Nd-Fe-B/polymer composite materials offer an excellent combination of strong magnetic and dynamical-mechanical properties. However, the transition temperatures of filler and matrix should be selected carefully considering the future application. Uniform particle distribution and good adhesion between Nd-Fe-B powder particles and polymer are essential for the quality of the composite, while stiffness of polymer matrix is one of the influencing factors as well. The damping properties of Nd-Fe-B/polymer composites with 15 wt.%, 50 wt.% and 75 wt.% of Nd-Fe-B powder were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis and compared with a pure polymer sample. Thermal stability was analyzed using a simultaneous differential scanning calorimetric and thermogravimetric analysis technique.

AB - A commercial Nd-rich Nd-Fe-B-based hard magnetic material was studied. The obtained results were compared before and after recording of the thermomagnetic curve up to 800 °C. The curve itself showed clearly besides Curie points of the Nd2Fe14B phase and α-Fe also another critical temperature. Mössbauer spectroscopic (MS) phase analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) showed in addition to the commonly known phases Nd2Fe14B and NdFe4B4 also some paramagnetic and ferromagnetic iron atoms (MS) and Fe17Nd2 intermetallics (XRD). During the exerted thermal treatment the content of the Nd2Fe14B and NdFe4B4 phases remained almost unchanged while iron atoms from remnant minor phases built a separate α-Fe phase. The XRD pattern also showed the presence of some minor Nd phase. The results of Squid magnetic measurements suggest a nanocrystalline decoupled structure of the Nd-rich alloy in the optimized magnetic state. Measurement of the magnetization loop showed, in spite of small changes in the phase composition, that magnetic properties of the quality material deteriorated during the thermal treatment.

AB - Phase equilibria in the Bi-Cu-Ni ternary system have been studied using differential thermal analysis (DTA) as well as by using the calculation of the phase diagram (CALPHAD) method. Literature experimental phase equilibria data and DTA results from this study were used for thermodynamic modeling of the Bi-Cu-Ni ternary system. Isothermal sections at 300, 400, and 500 degrees C, vertical sections from bismuth corner with molar ratio Cu:Ni = 1/3, 1/1 and 3/1 and vertical section at 40 at.% Cu were calculated and compared with corresponding experimental results. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental data was observed in all cases.

AB - Phase diagram of the ternary Bi-Sb-Zn system was investigated experimentally by DTA and SEM-EDS methods and analytically by CALPHAD method. The liquidus projection, invariant equilibria, several vertical sections and isothermal section at 300 degrees C were predicted using COST 531 thermodynamic database. Phase transition temperatures of alloys along three predicted vertical sections of the Bi-Sb-Zn ternary system with molar ratio Bi:Sb = 1, Bi:Zn = 1 and Sb:Zn = 1, were measured by differential thermal analysis (DTA). Predicted isothermal section at 300 degrees C was compared with the results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analysis from this work.

Predicted isothermal section at 300 degrees C was compared with the results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analysis from this work.",

AB - Multilayered composite systems of alternately electrodeposited nanocrystalline Cu and Ni films on cold-rolled microcrystalline copper substrates were fabricated. Highly-densified parallel interfaces which can give rise to high strength of composites are obtained by depositing layers at a very narrow spacing. The mechanical properties of the composite systems were characterized using Vickers microhardness testing with loads ranging from 1.96 N down to 0.049 N. Dependence of microhardness on layer thickness, Ni/Cu layer thickness ratio and total thickness of the film was investigated. The microhardness increased with decreasing the layer thickness down to 30 nm and it is consistent with the Hall-Petch relation. Composite hardness model of Korsunsky was applied to the experimental data in order to determine the composite film hardness. The highest value of all the composite film hardness values was obtained when the ratio of Ni: Cu layer thickness was 4:1.

AB - Current research efforts in the field of magnetic composite materials based on Nd-Fe-B alloys are directed towards three main goals: increase of magnetic energy and optimization of magnetic properties, improvement of corrosion resistance and reduction of rare-earth element (Nd) content as a way of the price reduction of the final magnetic material but with retained magnetic energy. Development of Nd-Fe-B nanocrystalline and nanocomposite magnetic alloys has significantly increased interest in research and development of composite magnetic materials with polymer matrix i.e. bonded magnets, since powders of these alloys are proved to be very suitable for their production. Application of different processing techniques in the production process of bonded magnets has provided the opportunity for utilization of different magnetic powders combined with variety of polymer binders. Improvement of production technology of bonded magnets, research of possibilities of application of different types and contents of magnetic powders and polymer binders and investigation of the influence of process parameters on obtaining of optimal mechanical and magnetic properties of the magnetic composite materials are in research focus over the past few years. The research trend is aimed at development of bonded hybrid magnetic composite materials with improved dynamic mechanical properties and significantly lower price due to substitution of expensive Nd-Fe-B magnetic powders with cheaper ferrite magnetic powders, but with suitable values of magnetic energy. Analysis of literature data revealed limited and individual studies of the influence of critical parameters on final properties of magnetic composite materials of this type. Based on more detail analysis of literature data it could be concluded that still there are no optimal solutions of relation: structure – dynamic mechanical properties – magnetic properties – price of boned magnet. The scope of this thesis is theoretical and experimental investigation of the influence of type and content of magnetic powder, type and content of polymer binder and process parameters in the applied methods of synthesis on the structural and dynamic mechanical properties of the investigated magnetic composite materials in the function of temperature as well as mechanical and magnetic properties at ambient temperature. Investigation of possible improvement of physical properties of the bonded magnets was included in the goal of this thesis and it was realized in the experimental part through synthesis and characterization of hybrid magnetic composite materials produced by mixing of two or more magnetic powders...

AB - Changes in the microstructure parameters, phase composition and magnetic properties of rapid quenched Nd-rich Nd14Fe79B7 alloy caused by thermomagnetic measurement (TM) were studied using XRD methods of phase analysis, crystallite size and lattice microstrain determination. The observed changes were analyzed between the optimized magnetic state of this alloy and state after TM up to 800oC. Measurement of magnetic properties was carried out on the SQUID magnetometer at ambient temperature. The obtained experimental results show that the investigated alloy in the optimized magnetic state has nearly monophase composition with predominant content of hard magnetic Nd2Fe14B phase (up to 95 mass %) with mean crystallite size below 60 nm. In the state after TM, it was found that the decreased amount of Nd2Fe14B phase (75 mass%), increased amount of soft magnetic phases, predominantly of Fe7Nd5, formation of Nd-rich oxide Nd2O3 phase, as well as grain growth have caused the observed quality loss of hard magnetic properties.

AB - The rapid-quenched (R/Q) and subsequently optimally annealed Nd-Fe-B alloy with 12 wt% Nd was characterized using the X-Ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. It was found that microstructure of the investigated alloy mainly consist of Fe3B, Nd2Fe14B phases and minor content of α-Fe phase, with mean crystal grain sizes being below 30 nm. The ferromagnetic exchange coupling between the grains of identified hard and soft magnetic phases has direct influence on the magnetic properties as it is illustrated by SQUID hysteresis loop. Correlation of the measured magnetic properties with results of microstructure analysis indicates that the investigated rapid-quenched Nd-Fe-B alloy has the nanocomposite structure in optimal magnetic state.

AB - Changes in the phase composition and crystallite size of a rapid quenched Nd4.5Fe77B18.5 alloy, caused by thermomagnetic measurements (TM) have been studied using XRD methods of phase analysis, crystallite size and lattice microstrain determination. Structural changes in regard to optimal magnetic state were additionally analyzed by TEM. Magnetic properties in optimal magnetic state and after TM were observed using room temperature SQUID measurements. The obtained experimental results suggest the Fe3B/Nd2Fe14B and partly α-Fe nanocomposite structure of the alloy in the optimized magnetic state, with mean crystallite size (< 30 nm). After TM, an increased amount of α-Fe phase, presence of different oxide and Fe-B phases as well as growth of crystallites are found to be the main reasons for the observed quality loss of hard magnetic properties.

AB - Changes in the phase composition and magnetic properties of three types of commercial Nd-Fe-B alloys with different Nd content - low (10-12 wt%), near stoichiometric (21-25 wt%) and rich (26-29 wt%) caused by thermomagnetic analysis (TM) were observed in regard to optimal magnetic state. Phase compositions of investigated alloys before and after TM measurement up to 800°C were compared using 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-Ray analysis. The TM measurements decompose all three materials and the main products of decomposition process α-Fe and Fe2B phase. Observed changes in structure and phase composition had direct influence on magnetic properties. Loss of magnetic properties induced by thermal decomposition is clearly illustrated on corresponding SQUID hysteresis loops.
AB - Istraživane su promene faznog sastava i magnetnih svojstava u odnosu na optimalno magnetno stanje za tri tipa komercijalnih Nd-Fe-B legura sa različitim sadržajem neodijuma - niskim (10-12 mas %), bliskim stehiometrijskom (21-25 mas %) i visokim (26-29 mas %), prouzrokovanih termomagnetnim (TM) merenjima. Fazni sastavi istraživanih legura pre i posle TM merenja do 800°C su poređeni koršćenjem 57Fe Mössbauer spektroskopske fazne analize i rendgensko-difraktometrijske analize. Usled termomagnetnih merenja dolazi do dekompozicije sva tri istraživana materijala i kao osnovni produkti dekompozicije nastaju α-Fe i Fe2B faze. Posmatrane promene u strukturi i faznom sastavu imaju direktan uticaj na magnetna svojstva. Gubitak magnetnih svojstava nastao usled termičke dekompozicije je jasno ilustrovan odgovarajućim SQUID histerezisnim petljama.

AB - Characterization of two rapid-quenched Nd-Fe-B alloys with nonstoichiometric Nd content in the optimized magnetic state was carried out using the X-ray diffractometry (XRD), 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic phase analysis (MS), electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution TEM (HREM) and Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) magnetometer. The experimental results demonstrate the fundamental difference in the structure and magnetic properties of the two investigated alloys in the optimized magnetic state. The Nd-Fe-B alloy with the reduced Nd content (Nd4.5Fe77B18.5) was found to have the nanocomposite structure of Fe3B/Nd2Fe14B and partly α-Fe/Nd2Fe14B, with mean grain size below 30 nm. On the other side, the overstoichiometric Nd14Fe79B7 alloy has almost a monophase structure with the dominant content of the hard magnetic phase Nd2Fe14B (up to 95 wt. %) and a mean crystallite size about 60 nm, as determined by XRD and TEM analysis. The results of magnetic measurements on SQUID magnetometer also suggest the nanocomposite structure of the Nd-low alloy and nanocrystalline decoupled structure of the Nd-rich alloy after the optimal heat treatment.
%) i srednju veličinu zrna oko 60 nm, utvrđenu XRD i TEM analizom.

AB - Fine-structured nickel coatings were electrodeposited from a sulfamate-based electrolyte onto different substrates: polycrystalline cold-rolled copper and single crystal silicon with (111) orientation. The influence of the substrate layers and chosen plating conditions on the mechanical and structural properties of these composite structures were investigated by Vickers microhardness testing for different loads. Above a certain critical penetration depth, the measured hardness value was not the hardness of the electrodeposited film, but the so-called 'composite hardness', because the substrate also participated in the plastic deformations during the indentation process. Two composite hardness models (Chicot-Lesage and Korsunsky), constructed on different principles, were chosen and applied to the experimental data in order to distinguish film and substrate hardness. The microhardness values of the electrodeposited nickel layers were mainly influenced by the current density. Increasing the current density led to a decrease in grain size, which resulted in higher values of the microhardness.
Povećanje gustine struje vodi smanjenju veličine zrna i povećanju vrednosti mikrotvrdoće.

Above a certain critical penetration depth, a measured hardness value is not the hardness of the electrodeposited film, but the so-called "composite hardness", because the substrate also participates in the plastic deformations during the indentation process. Four composite hardness models (Jonsson-Hogmark, Burnett-Rickerby, Chicot-Lesage and Korsunsky models) are chosen and applied to the experimental data. The applicability of mentioned models is critically tested on two types of composite systems: Ni film on Cu substrate, which is example for "hard film on soft substrate" and electrodeposited Ni on Si substrate ("soft film on hard substrate") and their reliability is given.

AB - The Au-In-Sb system is of great interest recently, because its alloys belong to the group of potential lead-free solder materials to be used in electronics, while as a part of Au-ln-Sb-Te system, it presents a suitable phase change material in optical recording media. The results of phase equilibria investigation and characterization of the alloys in the AuIn-Sb section of the Au-In-Sb system are presented in this paper. The investigations were performed using different experimental methods - thermal analysis, optical microscopy and SEM-EDX, hardness and electrical conductivity measurements, and also, using ThermoCalc software based on adequate thermodynamic calculation.

AB - Three kinds of commercial Nd-Fe-B based materials were compared using 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray analysis: near the Nd 2Fe14B stoichiometry and with both lowered and raised Nd content. Magnetically hard Nd2Fe14B is present in all three materials. In the Nd-low material it is accompanied with the magnetically soft Fe3B phase, building the nanocomposite structure. In the Nd-rich sample the overstoichiometric Nd atoms seem to build separate phase of Fe-Nd solid solution. None of the materials contain significant content of phases degrading magnetic characteristics, with except of minor Nd1.1Fe 4B4 one.

AB - Phase composition, structure and magnetic behaviour of two low neodymium rapid-quenched (R/Q) Nd-Fe-B alloys differing in way of preparation, centrifugal atomization and melt spinning, were studied and compared using Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermomagnetic analysis (TM) and SQUID magnetic measurements. Better hard magnetic characteristics of the melt-spun material are explained on the basis of the differences in content of surface and/or interface Fe(Nd,B) phases. Their significant presence in the centrifugally atomized material lowers the content of Fe3B, Fe2B, α-Fe, and Nd2Fe14B phases that are responsible for the magnetic qualities of the material. There are just subtle differences in the phase composition of both materials after thermomagnetic measurement, where the α-Fe phase prevails as a product of thermal decomposition.

AB - Changes in the phase composition and crystallite size, as well as changes in the magnetic behaviour of Nd4.5Fe77B18.5 alloy, caused by thermomagnetic measurements, was observed in regard of the optimal magnetic state of this alloy. In the optimized magnetic state, the formed nanocomposite consisted of Fe3B/Nd2Fe14B and partly of alpha-Fe with a mean crystallite size LT 30 nm, as determined by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. An increased amount of alpha-Fe, the presence of Nd2O3 and different Fe-B phases, as well as an increase in the mean crystallite size were observed after thermomagnetic measurements had caused a quality loss of the hard magnetic properties.

AB - The optical fiber magnetic sensing element (OFMSE) based on the optical fiber coated with composite coating polymer-magnetic powder has been already introduced in magnetic field sensing. In this research, the rapid quenched Nd-Fe-B powder with Nd rich content was used as magneto-active component in composite coating. Magnetic powder was dispersed in poly-(ethylene-co-vinyl- acetate) - EVA solution in toluene. The influence of magnetic powder content (20, 30, 40 and 50 mass %) in composite coating of multimode optical fiber on the thickness, hardness and uniformity was observed and discussed. Sensitivity and reversibility of the constructed OFMSE in the external magnetic field are illustrated.

AB - Phase transformations and magnetic properties of multiphase Nd 4.5Fe76.2B19.5 alloy were investigated in the temperature range of heat treatment 600-700°C. The influence of different heat treatment regimes was observed by correlation of phase composition and measured magnetic properties. The heat treatment regime, which provided the microstructure that improves exchange interactions between grains of soft and hard magnetic phases and consequently enhances magnetic properties, was defined and discussed. For optimized magnetic alloy grain size of the present phases Fe3B, Nd2Fe14B and α-Fe was calculated by size-strain analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data. abstract = "Phase transformations and magnetic properties of multiphase Nd 4.5Fe76.2B19.5 alloy were investigated in the temperature range of heat treatment 600-700°C. Calculated mean grain size was on a nanoscale, below 30 nm.",

AB - Phase composition, structure and magnetic behaviour of two low neodymium hard magnetic materials differing in way of preparation, centrifugal atomization and melt spinning, were compared using Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermomagnetic analysis and SQUID magnetic measurements. Better hard magnetic characteristics of the melt-spun material are explained on the basis of the differences in content of surface and/or interface Fe(Nd, B) phases. Their remarkable presence in the centrifugally atomized material lowers the content of Fe3B, Fe2B, α-Fe, and Nd2Fe14B phases that are responsible for the magnetic qualities of the material. There are just subtle differences in the phase composition of both materials after thermomagnetic measurement, where the a-Fe phase prevails as a product of thermal decomposition.
