AB - Polyextremophilic, hydrocarbonoclastic Pseudomonas aeruginosa san ai can survive under extreme environmental challenges in the presence of a variety of pollutants such as organic solvents and hydrocarbons, particularly aromatics, heavy metals, and high pH. To date, the metabolic plasticity of the extremophilic P. aeruginosa, has not been sufficiently studied in regard to the effect of changing carbon sources. Therefore, the present study explores the carbon metabolic pathways of polyextremophilic P. aeruginosa san ai grown on sodium benzoate versus glucose and its potential for aromatic degradation. P. aeruginosa san ai removed/metabolised early 430 mg/L of benzoate for 48 h, demonstrating a high capacity for aromatic degradation. Comparative functional proteomics, targeted metabolomics and genomics analytical approaches were employed to study the carbon metabolism of the P. aeruginosa san ai. Functional proteomic study of selected enzymes participating in the β-ketoadipate and the Entner-Doudoroff pathways revealed a metabolic reconfiguration induced by benzoate compared to glucose. Metabolome analysis implied the existence of both catechol and protocatechuate branches of the β-ketoadipate pathway. Enzymatic study of benzoate grown cultures confirmed the activity of the ortho-catechol branch of the β-ketoadipate pathway. Even high concentrations of benzoate did not show increased stress protein synthesis, testifying to its extremophilic nature capable of surviving in harsh conditions. This ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa san ai to efficiently degrade benzoate can provide a wide range of use of this strain in environmental and agricultural application.

AB - The aim of this research was characterization of oil pollutants in the soil and sediments
in the vicinity of one of the largest district heating plants in Belgrade (Capital of Serbia).
The soil and sediment samples (109 in total) were collected in spring 2015. From these
samples, the extractable organic matter was isolated using a Soxhlet apparatus, and
fractionated into fractions of: saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and polar
compounds. Saturated hydrocarbons were analysed by gas chromatography – mass
spectrometry.
Saturated biomarkers revealed that the surface samples contained mixtures of a diesel
fuel and native organic substance while the pollutant in the subsurface samples was a mixture
of a diesel fuel and a heavy oil fuel. Sterane and terpane biomarkers confirmed presence of
different oil pollutants at this location.
It was concluded that the oil pollutants saturated hydrocarbons at this location
originate from multiple discharges of diesel and/or a heavy oil fuel.

Breast Milk for Premature Infants: Nutritive and health Aspects

AB - Breast milk is considered to be the only and the best nutrition for newborn infants until six months of age. However, some of the most important problems regarding the nutrition of infants after preterm delivery are due to the fact that preterm milk is produced before complete maturation of mammary glands and that the preterm infant’s gastrointestinal tract is not mature enough at the time of partition. Since human milk has unique properties in promoting gastrointestinal maturation and immunological benefits, it is very important to implement strategies of fortification to appropriately actuate its benefits. Donor breast milk from milk banks is widely used when mother’s own milk is not available or when it is in short supply for preterm infants. While donor breast milk retains some of the biological properties and clinical benefits of mother’s own milk, it requires additional care in terms of fortification, especially if the donor milk is from a pool of term breast milk which is somewhat different than preterm breast milk. As nutritional strategies improve, the ultimate goal is to minimize extrauterine growth restriction and promote appropriate growth and development of premature infants. Another problem with breast milk, which is quite often overlooked, is that after six months, there is not enough of essential microelements (Zn, Fe and Cu) to satisfy baby’s needs, and therefore, the milk must be effectively supplemented. In this chapter we review the following aspects of breast milk for preterm infants: 1) The main nutritive factors of breast milk; 2) The use of fortifier as breast milk supplement; 3) Significance of microelements in preterm nutrition; and 4) Health outcomes of breast milk for preterm infants.

abstract = "Breast milk is considered to be the only and the best nutrition for newborn infants until six months of age. AB - Due to their extensive use, petroleum hydrocarbons are among the most common groundwater contaminants. Compared to the traditional methods of physical pumping of contamination from the aquifer and subsequent treatment (i.e., pump and treat), bioremediation is an economically cost-effective
technology. The aim of this remediation approach is to transform biologically contaminants, most often by microbiological activity, into non-toxic compounds.
More precisely, it is an active remediation process that involves biostimulation (increase of aquifer oxygenation, addition of nutrients) and/or bioaugmentation (injection of a concentrated and specialized population of microorganisms).
Using both biostimulation and bioaugmentation, enhanced in situ groundwater bioremediation was applied at a hydrocarbon-contaminated site in
Belgrade. The bioremediation treatment, applied over twelve months, was highly efficient in reducing the concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbon
(TPH) to acceptable levels. The concentration of TPH in the piezometer P-5 was reduced by 98.55 %, in the piezometer P-6 by 98.30 % and in the piezometer
P-7 by 98.09 %. These results provided strong evidence on the potential of this remediation approach to overcome site-limiting factors and enhance
microbiological activity in order to reduce groundwater contamination.
AB - Concentrations of 10 potentially toxic trace elements were measured in soil samples collected from 18 sites in urban areas of Belgrade, the capital and the largest city in Serbia. Samples were analysed in order to assess the extent of soil contamination and to distinguish natural and anthropogenic input. The results demonstrated a general Zn, Pb, and Cd enrichment in surface samples, hence, after comparison with guidelines, it has been determined that there is a potential risk for human health. In the surface and buried samples, traces of cooper were detected. The highest concentrations of Cr (121 ± 12.3 mg/kg) and Ni (94.9 ± 12.6 mg/kg) were found at a sediment depth of 2 m and should be ascribed to geogenic sources. The results of HCA and PCA analysis supported a natural origin of Co, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Ni, while Cd, Zn, and Pb originated from anthropogenic inputs. Based on the pollution indices, Cd made the most dominant contribution, posing a high contamination risk in the studied area. Results of Nemerow pollution index (PIN) and potential ecological risk index (PER) demonstrated that pollution by heavy metals in sediments on several sites is moderately intense.

AB - Within a 30-day incubation laboratory study, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation profile of two bacteria, Planomicrobium sp. RNP01 and Rhodococcus sp. RNP05 were studied by three microtiter plate assays to reveal the combination of certain biological and biochemical characteristics which are reliable indicators in evaluation of bacterial biodegradation abilities. The three assays, which are hydrocarbon growth assay, 2,6-DCPIP assay and dehydrogenase activity assay revealed that Rhodococcus sp. RNP05 exhibited better potential for PAH degradation than Planomicrobium sp. RNP01. Differences between initial and final optical density and specific growth rate constants were significantly higher (r = 0.995, P < 0.05) in case of Rhodococcus sp. RNP05 on all tested substrates, as compared to Planomicrobium sp. RNP01. This was confirmed by GC-FID analyses. Dehydrogenase activity of Rhodococcus sp. RNP05 was higher (r = 0.9995, P < 0.05) than Planomicrobium sp. RNP01 and correlated positively with the hydrocarbon growth assay (r = 0.999, P < 0.05, for Rhodococcus sp. RNP05, r = 0.986, P < 0.05 for Planomicrobium sp. RNP01). This study has shown that the combination of these assays could be used for determining the bioremediation potential of PAHs in petroleum contaminated soil with the ability of screening a large number of bacterial strains.

AB - Humic acids isolated from the soil of a heat power plant (HA-E) contaminated with oil were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In comparison with a humic acids standard (HA-S), a lack of an intense broad band of the stretching vibrations of hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl groups (3600–3200 cm-1) is evident. The HA-E spectra have a peak at 1649 cm-1, which could belong to carbonyl groups. HA-E are heavily oxidized and among the isolated microorganisms, Achromobacter denitrificans may be responsible for such intensive oxidation of HA-E. To the phylogenetically diverse nitrate-reducing microorganisms that have the capacity to utilize reduced HA as electron donors in soils, A. denitrificans can be added.

AB - Ongoing demand in sustainable and biocompatible drug dosage forms is reflected in the search for novel pharmaceutical excipients with equal properties. A group of microbial exopolysaccharides offers a variety of biopolymers with many alleged uses and effects. This study aims to assess applicative properties of levan obtained from Bacillus licheniformis NS032, focusing on its potential co-stabilizing and drug release-controlling functions in pertaining emulsion systems. Despite its high molecular weight and partial existence in globular nanometric structures (180-190 nm), levan was successfully incorporated into both tested colloidal systems: those stabilized with synthetic/anionic or natural-origin/non-ionic emulsifiers. In the tested levan concentrations range (0.2-3.0% w/w) the monitored flow and thermal parameters failed to show linear concentration dependence, which prompted us to revisit certain colloidal fundamentals of this biopolymer. Being a part of the external phase of the investigated emulsion systems, levan contributed to formation of a matrix-like environment, offering additional stabilization of the microstructure and rheology modifying properties (hysteresis loop elevation as high as 4167±98 to 20792±3166 Pa•s−1), especially in case of the samples where lamellar liquid crystalline formation occurred. Apart from its good water solubility and considerable conformational flexibility, the investigated homofructan easily saturated the external phase of the samples stabilized with a conventional anionic emulsifier, leading to similar properties of 0.2% and 3.0% levan-containing samples. After closer consideration of thermal and release behavior, this was considered as a favorable property for a novel excipient, offering tailored formulation characteristics even with lower levan concentrations, consequently not compromising the potential cost of the final drug dosage form.

AB - An efficient encapsulation of the fullerene into two hydrophobized and one native polysaccharide provided water soluble supramolecular hybrids. After covalent modification of polysaccharides by cholesterol, noncovalent hybrids were prepared by a three-step procedure, including mixing of individual aqueous solutions of hydrophobized, as well as native sugar with solution of the fullerene in pyridine, dialysis and lyophilization. Although the degree of the fullerene incorporation into hydrophobized substrates, cholesterol-levan and cholesterol-pullulan, was lower in comparison to the native polysaccharide levan, hydrophobization provided nanoparticles with improved properties. The particle size distribution, studied by dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy revealed formation of moderately polydisperse aggregates, with the diameter contraction in comparison to the corresponding free polysaccharide, especially in the case of hydrophobized substrates. The morphological examination, done by scanning electron microscopy indicated the self-organization of the fullerene-native polysaccharide to round individual structures, while fullerene-hydrophobized polysaccharide hybrids tend to form networks. The antioxidant activity of the synthesized polysaccharide-C60 noncovalent hybrids versus starting polysaccharides was investigated by the DPPH radical scavenging and the β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching methods. In all three complexes, the radical scavenging ability of the fullerene remained preserved, and a positive effect of levan hydrophobization was observed.

AB - The graphene oxide (GO) due to its exceptional structure, physicochemical and mechanical properties is a very attractive material for industry application. Even though, the unique properties of GO (e.g. structure, size, shape, etc.) make the risk assessment of this nanomaterial very challenging in comparison with conventional ecotoxicology studies required by regulators. Thus, there is a need for standardized characterization techniques and methodology to secure a high quality/reliable data on the ecotoxicology of GO, and to establish environmentally acceptable levels. Herein, authors address the crucial quality criteria when evaluating the ecotoxicology of GO using an algae (Raphidocelis subcapitata) and a shrimp (Paratya australiensis). This study provides a detail characterization and modification of the used GO, robust quantification and a suspension stability in different media for ecotoxicology studies. It was observed that under the same exposure conditions the behavior of GO and the estimated outcomes (IC50 values) in modified algae media differed in comparison to the referent media. Further to that, the adverse effects of GO on the algae cell structure and the potential uptake of GO by the algae cells were examined using the TEM with different staining techniques to avoid artefacts. Shrimps which were exposed to GO-algae aggregates via the food intake did not indicate stress or accumulation of GO. Our work presents an important insight to necessity of establishing a benchmark ecotoxicology assays for GO (e.g. characterization techniques, choice of media, etc.) and providing a reliable data to be used by regulators in risk assessment of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials.

AB - Contamination of soil, groundwater, sediment, surface water and air, hazardous waste such as oil and by-products
arising during processing of oil, pose a major problem the world faces today.
Catalysts used in the desulphurisation process oil can be a source of pollution with heavy metals and are therefore
tested their chemical properties, as well as their impact on the growth of microbial consortium in the process of bioremediation, which is isolated from the waste of fuel oil from the PUC “Belgrade power plants” and waste motor oil. We
examined five different catalysts that are derived from the Oil Refinery Pancevo, a metal that is focused attention as
Mo (molybdenum) and Co (cobalt).
The efficiency of bacterial cells in concentrating metal has enabled their high ratio of surface area to volume and high
charge density on the cell surface. Entire bacterial cell is negatively charged due to the presence of different anions.
Therefore, the bacterial cell walls have a strong affinity for metal cations. Intact bacterial cells, regardless of whether
they are alive or dead, as their products are also very effective in accumulating metals.

AB - Pseudomonas aeruginosa san ai, an alkaliphilic, metallotolerant bacterium, degraded individual selected
petroleum compounds, i.e., n-alkanes (n-hexadecane, n-nonadecane) and polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (fluorene, phenanthrene, pyrene) with efficiency of 80%, 98%, 96%, 50% and 41%,
respectively, at initial concentrations of 20 mg L 1 and in seven days. P. aeruginosa san ai showed a high
biodegradative capacity on complex hydrocarbon mixtures, the aliphatic and aromatic fractions from
crude oil. The efficiency of P. aeruginosa san ai degradation of crude oil fractions in seven days reached
stage 3–4 of the oil biodegradation scale, which ranges from 0 (no biodegradation) to 10 (maximum
biodegradation). Identified metabolites concomitant with genomic and enzymatic data indicated the
terminal oxidation pathway for the n-alkane degradation, and the salicylate and phthalate pathways for
fluorene biodegradation. Polyextremophilic P. aeruginosa san ai, as a biosurfactant producer with
multidegradative capacity for hydrocarbons, can be used in an improved strategy for environmental
bioremediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated sites, including extreme habitats characterized by low or
elevated temperatures, acidic or alkaline pH or high concentrations of heavy metals.

AB - Environmental pollution is a global problem, while bioremediation technology removes pollutants from the environment using microorganisms. This study was aimed at investigating how a bioremediation process affected soil humification. In soil polluted with petroleum and its derivatives that was submitted to bioremediation, besides the total petroleum hydrocarbons and the number of microorganisms, quantitative and qualitative changes of isolated
humic acids were determined during the process. The bioremediation of 150 m3 of polluted soil lasted 150 days. The level of total petroleum hydrocarbons
decreased by 86.6 %, while the level of humic acids increased by 26.5 %. The elemental analysis showed the reduction of C and the H/C ratio and the
increase of O and the O/C ratio of isolated humic acids during the process. The ratio of absorbencies at 465 and 665 nm also increased. Based on this and the
Fourier-transform infrared spectra, it was shown that the humic acids isolated at the end of bioremediation were enriched with oxygen functional groups and
aromatic structures. This study provides one of the first insights into the relationship between bioremediation and humification, as well as evidence of how
hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms have a significant influence on changes to humic acid structure during bioremediation.

AB - The health promoting effects of hot water extracts obtained from
fruiting bodies of the commercially cultivated mushroom Agaricus bisporus
(AbHW) and the wild-growing mushroom Ganoderma resinaceum (GrHW)
originating from northern Serbia are presented in this research. These abilities
were compared in vitro by the prevention of lipid peroxidation (LPx) in a linoleic
acid model system, inhibition of the angiotension converting I enzyme
(ACE) that could help in the maintenance of a normal blood pressure level and
strengthening the ability of the central cholinergic neuron by inhibiting the activity
of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Cytotoxic activities were observed
towards selected human malignant (HeLa and K562) cell lines and normal-
-human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). GrHW contains higher
phenolics (5.9 g (100 g)-1), inhibition of LPx (EC50 = 1.07 mg mL-1), ACE
(IC50 = 0.54 mg mL-1) and AChE (IC50 = 0.37 mg mL-1), and exhibited a significant
selectivity in the antitumour action against HeLa (IC50 = 0.14 mg mL-1)
and K562 (IC50 = 0.11 mg mL-1) cells. AbHW contained higher total protein
(6.4 g (100 g)-1), carbohydrate (75.4 g (100 g)-1) and β-glucan (55.1 g (100 g)-1)
contents and induced significant proliferation of healthy PBMC from 152–116
% in the concentration range of 0.047–0.187 mg mL-1. The difference in the
biological activity of the extracts provides guidance on their use as functional
food.

phenolics (5.9 g (100 g)-1), inhibition of LPx (EC50 = 1.07 mg mL-1), ACE

AB - Petroleum and its derivatives are among the major pollutants of soil. Bioremediation, a
method that uses the ability of microorganisms to decompose toxic waste, is a prevailing
trend in the decontamination of polluted soil contaminated by petroleum and its derivates.
Bioremediation procedures are in harmony with the principles of sustainable development, are
categorized as “environmentally friendly” technologies, do not form waste and the treated soil
can recover its natural biological activity.
The aim of this paper is to study the use of an active consortium of zymogenous
microorganisms for ex situ bioremediation of a petroleum contaminant in the soil, along with
simultaneous monitoring of the humification process.

AB - Groundwater is an very important natural resource. Clean groundwater is essential for the pres-
ervation of the entire ecosystem. Bioremediation is a process which is based on the natural capacity of microorganisms to remove or transform hazardous substances from the environment into less toxic or harmless products. This paper presents the bioremediation of groundwater contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons. The contaminated area was located at the thermal energy facility, near the city of Belgrade, on the terrace sediments of the Sava River. In the process, which lasted for 18 months, groundwater was treated by in situ bioremediation. Bioremediation treatment was conducted by a combination of biostimulation and bioaugmentation. Biostimulation was conducted by injection of nutrients. Bioaugmentation was achieved by injection of a zymogenous consortium of microorganisms, previously isolated from the contaminated groundwater, which were capable of using the contaminating substances as nutrients. The treatment was carried out in a closed bipolar system„with groundwater recirculation, by combination of extraction and injection wells. During the bioremediation, the content of petroleum hydrocarbon in groundwater decreased by 93% of the initial level. This indicates that the process of bioremediation was performed successfully.

AB - The development of chemical industry in the last century has contributed to an increase in food production, more effective disease control and improved living standards. Nevertheless, it left huge quantities of toxic substances in the environment. Persistent organic pollutants are chemicals that persist, accumulate throughout the food chain and have harmful effects on human health and the environment. Perfluoroalkyl substances such as perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride, are on the list of persistent organic pollutants. Several recent publications have shown that microorganisms isolated from environments polluted by perfluoroalkyl substances can reduce the level of these compounds. In this paper, bacterial strain isolated from such an environment, which demonstrated capability to reduce perfluoroalkyl substances in a preliminary study, was physiologically, biochemically and molecularly characterized. The microorganism is Gram-negative, nonmotile, oxidase negative and catalase positive. The microorganism can produce a variety of hydrolase enzymes. Fatty acid methyl ester profile was also determined. Molecular characterization confirmed that the bacterium belongs to Klebsiella sp. Microorganism was successfully characterized using different methods and in the future this strain will be used in a laboratory study to analyze the mechanisms of reduction of perfluoroalkyl substance concentration.
ljudsko zdravlje i životnu sredinu.
