AB - The paramount challenge of the 21st century lies in the profound energy demands imposed by
contemporary society. The utilization of energy derived from non-renewable sources,
notably coal, oil, and their byproducts, is intrinsically associated with grave environmental
repercussions, primarily manifested in the form of pollution. The notion of fuel cells stands
as a prospective resolution to this problem, offering a sustainable avenue for energy
production devoid of environmentally adverse emissions. The aim of this research was to
explore the potential of carbon cloth electrodes in the Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) system.

abstract = "The paramount challenge of the 21st century lies in the profound energy demands imposed by
contemporary society.
The aim of this research was to
explore the potential of carbon cloth electrodes in the Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) system.",

AB - Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a plastic material that poses a significant global concern
due to its durability and resistance to degradation. One effective method for minimizing PET
waste is through microbial degradation, resulting in the production of ethylene glycol and
terephthalic acid (TA). Terephthalic acid, as a PET monomer, holds promise as a model
compound for further exploration into PET plastic degradation and valorisation.

AB - Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a promising technology that has the potential to solve environmental problems while simultaneously generating electricity. Thanks to the direct use of energy from the substrate and its conversion into electricity, as well as the controlled production of activated sludge, the multiplicity of independent applications highly qualifies MFC for the use of wastewater treatment. Wastewater from various industries is an ideal source of organic substrate that can potentially be used in MFC systems. In this way besides degrading organic pollutants, generated energy can be obtained as added value and used for various purposes.

AB - Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals, which are introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities. Remediation of PFAS contaminated soil and aqueous media is challenging, which is attributed to the chemical and thermal stability of PFAS and the complexity of PFAS mixtures.
Plants absorb water and nutrients through their roots to maintain their continuous healthy growth. Phytoremediation is a method that uses the ability of plants to remove and stabilize contaminants from the environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the plant growth in the presence of high concentrations of PFOA using the germination test, and further investigate their potential to degrade PFOA in soil. The accumulation of PFOA in plants was monitored using target LC/MS/MS analysis.

AB - Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals with extremely strong C-F bonds. Due to their thermal stability, acid resistance, and high surface activity, they have been widely used for several decades in various consumer products. PFAS has been detected in water, soil, sediment, air, food, and biota samples on all continents and due to this are recognized as environmental and human health risk (Carlson et al. 2022). In the last decade, several available technologies were tested for the remediation of PFAS-polluted environments, such as adsorption, filtration, thermal destruction, oxidation/reduction, and soil washing, but several disadvantages were reported (Bolan et al., 2021). We hypothesize that by using advanced oxidation techniques followed by microbial treatment decrease in the concentration of PFOA as a PFAS model compound will occur. In the beginning, we tested separately abiotic and biotic degradation of PFOA. Target LC-MS/MS was used for quantitative analysis of PFOA decrease, and for detecting degradation products, nontargeted LC-MS/MS analysis was used. In the photocatalysis study, we used selected Ti and Al-based photocatalysts. The experiments were conducted at 20 °C in an open cylindrical polypropylene reactor, and a simulated solar radiation lamp (Solimed BH Quarzlampen) was used as a light source. Microbial communities were isolated from the locations in Serbia, Japan, and Italy known for their pollution with PFAS, and enrichment was conducted on the media supplemented with ppm values of PFOA (Beskoski et al., 2018). Microbial communities were used as inoculum in the PFOA biodegradation study.

AB - Metals are widespread in nature and organisms are constantly exposed to them through a variety of sources, therefore, there is a need for microorganisms to have the ability to respond to potentially toxic metals in their environment. One of such metals is chromium (Cr), and the toxicity of Cr is dependent on oxidation state and solubility. Chromate (Cr(VI)) is a powerful oxidizing agent, and is more toxic then Cr (III).
The aim of this work was to determine the influence of chromate on the respiration and enzymatic activity of baker’s and brewer’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

AB - Rationale: Discovering biomarkers of major depressive disorder (MDD) can give a deeper understanding of this mood dis order and improve the ability to screen for, diagnose, and treat MDD.
Objectives: In this study, metabolomics was used in unraveling metabolite fuctuations of MDD and drug outcome by creating specifc metabolomic fngerprints. We report metabolomic patterns of change of the hippocampus of adult male Wistar rats following chronic social isolation (CSIS) (6 weeks), an animal model of depression, and/or chronic tianeptine (Tian) treatment (10 mg kg−1 per day) (lasting 3 weeks of 6-week CSIS), monitored by using comprehensive GC×GC–MS.
Results: The comparative metabolomic analysis highlighted the role of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), iso-allocholate, and unsaturated fatty acid metabolism alterations following the CSIS, which was corroborated with moderate to strong nega tive Pearson’s correlation of GABA, docosahexaenoic, 9-hexadecenoic acid, 5,8,11,14-eicosatetraynoic, and arachidonic acids with immobility behavior in the forced swim test. The antidepressant efect of Tian restored GABA levels, which was absent in Tian resilient rats. Tian decreased myo-inositol and increased TCA cycle intermediates, amino acids, and cholesterol and its metabolite. As key molecules of divergence between Tian efectiveness and resilience, metabolomics revealed myo-inositol, GABA, cholesterol, and its metabolite. A signifcant moderate positive correlation between myo-inositol and immobility was revealed. Tian probably acted by upregulating NMDAR’s and α2 adrenergic receptors (AR) or norepinephrine transporter in both control and stressed animals.
Conclusion: Metabolomics revealed several dysregulations underlying CSIS-induced depressive-like behavior and responsiveness to Tian, predominantly converging into NMDAR-mediated glutamate and myo-inositol signalization and GABA inhibitory pathways.

AB - The problem of wastewater has long been ubiquitous and has great consequences for the environment and its
inhabitants. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have enormous potential for the treatment of wastewaters polluted with
azo dyes. The amount of energy that can be produced from a single-chamber MFC is sufficient to perform
decolorization and degradation of such dyes, which are widely used in the textile industry. This study on the azo
dye, reactive black 5 (RB5), provides an alternative method through three parallel-connected MFCs to obtain
electricity that directly serves for the dye’s electrochemical degradation. We examined degradation followed by
decolorization of RB5 using Fe and Pt electrodes, together with H2O2, to achieve the electro-Fenton process. The
amount of voltage produced (295 mV), the current density (276 mA m− 3
) and the power density (50 mW m− 3
)
were sufficient to degrade 25 mg L-1 RB5 dye with 0.5 mM H2O2 in just 2 h. The dye degradation mechanism was
investigated using UV–VIS, FT-IR and HPLC-MS/MS. The ecotoxicity of the degradation products was assessed
using a bacterial model, Aliivibrio fischeri. These tests showed that there was successful degradation of the dye to
products whose toxicity is less than that of RB5.

AB - The characterization and cleanup of groundwater contamination in hazardous-waste sites are of significant engineering and scientific importance. This study analyzes biodegradation fingerprints in groundwater, 25 years after the accidental leakage of kerosene (jet fuel) at the site in central Serbia. The long-term existence of hydrocarbon contamination and the presence of indigenous microbiological populations capable of biodegradation have been confirmed by the results of GCxGC-MS chromatography and microbiological characterization. Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), geochemical indicators, and other parameters were spatially analyzed to provide insight into biodegradation occurrence. The lowest concentrations of electron acceptors (O2, NO3-, and SO42-) and the highest concentrations of microbial metabolic products (Mn and Fe) overlap in the piezometers closest to the source of contamination, due to the occurrence of different biodegradation mechanisms. Based on the analysis of redox-sensitive compounds, the mixed oxic-anoxic processes in groundwater also correspond to the aforementioned zone, as confirmed by the redox potential (Eh) measurements. The results of cross-study analysis reveal further reduction of hydrocarbon contamination, the occurrence of less anoxic redox processes, and the increase of oxic conditions in groundwater. Overall, the results provide clear evidence of the biodegradation effects in groundwater and insight into their evolution under natural attenuation processes.

Ecotoxicological analysis using Vibrio fisheri showed that the highest toxicity is the RB5 dye (EC20 8.17%), while the resulting degradation product after 6 h of treatment with electricity obtained through the MFC system has the lowest toxicity to this bacterium (EC20 33.05%)",
