AB - U ovom radu je ispitivano kombinovanje adsorpcije i bioremedijacije u postupku prečišćavanja voda kontaminiranih dizelom.

AB - Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals, which are introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities. Remediation of PFAS contaminated soil and aqueous media is challenging, which is attributed to the chemical and thermal stability of PFAS and the complexity of PFAS mixtures.
Plants absorb water and nutrients through their roots to maintain their continuous healthy growth. Phytoremediation is a method that uses the ability of plants to remove and stabilize contaminants from the environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the plant growth in the presence of high concentrations of PFOA using the germination test, and further investigate their potential to degrade PFOA in soil. The accumulation of PFOA in plants was monitored using target LC/MS/MS analysis.

AB - Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of contaminants characterized by their persistence, long-range transport, biomagnification in food chains and bioaccumulation in humans and wildlife. They have been shown to cause cancer in animals as well as a number of serious non-cancer health effects such as effects on the immune, reproductive and endocrine system and other health effects. The international community has responded to the threat from persisting organic pollutants (POPs), including PCBs, by negotiating a global treaty, the Stockholm Convention on POPs, with the objective of protecting human health and the environment from POPs.

AB - Background and objectives: Human milk is the golden standard in infant nutrition. A very important segment of nutritional support for premature children is milk banks. In milk banks, during the process of storage and pasteurization, the characteristics of milk change, and consequently, its quality changes as well. Current electrochemical techniques (green analytical chemistry) can be used to determine the quality of milk regarding its total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Methods: The application of various electrochemical methods, such as differential pulse voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, polarography, or potentiometry, enables monitoring of the quality and redox capacity of human milk and infant food. Changes in the TAC of human milk were examined after thermal treatments, which are commonly used in milk banks, as well as after supplementation with a fortifier. Results: The results obtained using electrochemical methods were compared to the most commonly used spectrophotometric methods for monitoring total antioxidant capacity. The obtained results showed that electrochemical methods can overcome the limitations of spectrophotometric methods, such as lower sensitivity, slower reaction and insensitivity at higher antioxidant concentrations. Cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry methods can be successfully applied as fast methods for testing milk quality in milk banks and clinical studies. Conclusion: The tested electrochemical methods are fast, cheap, and reliable in determining TAC since they are based on direct measurement of electron-donating components of milk and enable the quantitative determination of TAC in human milk and infant food. They are very important for routine and daily determinations of TAC in infant food, as well as for the control of milk freshness, especially after using fortifiers in neonatal units.

AB - Background/objectives: Normal growth and development of the human gastrointestinal tract begins at the earliest age of life. The microbiota is a complex system and there are numerous efforts to influence these microbial species in order to improve health. Prebiotics with probiotics act synergistically in organisms, so they represent supplements or food ingredients specifically intended for this role. In children, analyzing the microbial composition can determine the potential for obesity later in life, which is why the influence of nutrition in the earliest period is an important factor, especially for preterm infants. Human milk is the best source of nutrients, but in cases when it is not available, infant formulas are important because, in addition to their nutritional role, they also achieve a prebiotic effect in the body. The goal of this paper was to provide an overview of our research and application of potential prebiotics. Methods: The methodology was based on the analysis and synthesis of collected and systematized data and research results. Results: Supplementation with inulin, GOS and FOS is very important in the nutrition and development of infants, which was also shown during our clinical research of infant formulas supplemented with these prebiotics, where the bifidogenic effect was pronounced in the feces of infants fed with prebiotic infant formula. Human milk provides unique prebiotics, the effect of which is difficult to replicate. In vitro testing of some microbiologically synthesized potential prebiotics such as levan, pullulan, and beta-glucan, which is the first step in the analysis of potential prebiotics, showed a positive effect on individual probiotic strains or on a consortium of microorganisms isolated from infant feces. Determination of biochemical parameters and gas production are further criteria for the selection of potential prebiotics. Discussion: Our research indicates that there are different effects of prebiotics on selected individual probiotics or cultures from feces, which can be further tested in vitro and in vivo and then potentially applied in nutrition and supplementation.

AB - World hunger remains a pressing global issue that demands innovative solutions to ensure food security and alleviate widespread malnutrition. In this context, the role of chemistry in addressing the complex challenges of food production, preservation, and distribution is crucial. Chemistry has the potential to play a significant role in addressing the global issue of world hunger. Through the development of innovative agricultural practices, food preservation technologies, and novel food sources, chemistry can help increase the global food supply and ensure that all people have access to nutritious and affordable food. This paper explores the various ways in which chemistry is being used to tackle world hunger, from the production of drought-resistant crops to the development of sustainable farming methods. The paper also discusses the challenges that must be overcome to fully leverage the potential of chemistry in addressing world hunger, including the need for investment in research and development, as well as greater collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Ultimately, this paper argues that chemistry can be a powerful tool in the fight against world hunger and that continued investment in this field has the potential to make a significant impact on global food security. Chemistry plays a fundamental role in improving agricultural practices and increasing crop yields. Through the development of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, chemists can optimize plant growth, enhance soil fertility, and combat pests and diseases that threaten agricultural productivity. Moreover, advancements in genetic engineering and biotechnology allow scientists to create genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as potential food. In conclusion, chemistry holds immense potential in addressing the challenges of world hunger. By leveraging its principles and technologies, including agricultural innovations, food preservation techniques, fortification strategies, and sustainable practices, chemistry can contribute to increasing food production, improving nutrition, and ensuring food security for vulnerable populations. However, it is crucial to prioritize ethical considerations, sustainability, and equitable access to these advancements to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach to solving world hunger.

AB - Freeze storage and pasteurization of human milk are common treatments in milk banks. Thermal treatment changes the quality of milk for preterm infants’ nutrition, and the aim of this paper was to examine the nutritional profile and antioxidant potential of preterm human milk after storage and pasteurization, and also after supplementation with fortifier. The effects of storage processes were estimated on mature preterm milk of 30 breastfeeding women. Total proteins, lipids and lactose were determined after thermal processing and supplementation of mature preterm milk with fortifier. The antioxidant capacity was determined using the ferric reducing antioxidant potential method and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay. Protein concentration decreased after frozen storage and pasteurization (p<0.05). Pasteurization further reduced the lipid concentration after freezing. The ferric reducing antioxidant potential decreased after thermal treatments (p<0.05). Supplementation of mature milk with fortifier increased the concentration of proteins, lipids and lactose. Our findings demonstrated that storage and pasteurization processes affect the basic nutritional composition and antioxidant capacity of preterm human milk. In order to ensure adequate nutrition for preterm infants with preterm human milk, supplementation, especially with high concentrations of proteins and lipids, is necessary after thermal treatments.

AB - Background and Aims:
Human milk (HM) feeding has an important role in prevention of oxydative stress in preterm
infants. Human milk is a complex biological fluid with an antioxidative function. Antioxidative
enzymes present in HM are superoxid dismutase (SOD), glutatione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and
glutatione reductase (GR).
Evaluation of antioxidative enzymes (SOD, GSH-Px, GR) in HM after heat treatment, ie
pasteurisation of donor HM previously freezed for 7 days in HM bank, using spectrophotometric
methods.
Methods:
Cohort study enrolled 30 mothers of preterm neonates (birth before 37 weeks of gestational age)
that established lactation. Antioxidative activity of enzymes in milk samples before and after the
heat treatment was measured with spectrophotometric methods. Study protocol was approved by
Ethical Comittee of Institute for neonatology, all mothers gave their written consent prior to
participation.
Study was supported by Ministry of education, science and tehchnological development, Serbia.
Results:
SOD, GSH-Px and GR acitivity was significantly higher in fresh mature milk samples compared
to mature, frozen for seven days and then pasteurised, milk of mothers of preterm infants
(p<0,001).
Conclusions:
Process of heat treatment and/or storage of mature milk of mothers of preterm infants reduce
enzyme acitivity of HM, thereby decreasing total antioxidative capacity. This implies that it
would be optimal to feed the preterm infants with fresh fortified HM whenever possible.

AB - Sustainable development (SD) as a sociological-economic-political
category rests on three pillars: environment, society and economy. The
intersection of these three sets of immeasurably different sizes is defined as
SD. Essential SD is the unhindered flow of substances and energy, i.e. the
unfolding of biogeochemical cycles. Established in 2015 by the United
Nations, it contains 17 interrelated and interdependent goals, such as the
circulation of substances and energy in nature. Practically every goal is
directly or indirectly related to the environment, with goal 13 explicitly
apostrophizing it: "Climate Action-Climate Changes". The environment is
indeed the central entity of civilization and together with food, health, energy
and transport and information forms its framework. The question is how
sustainable are the environment and SD, especially in the context of global
perturbations, such as the CoViD-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, and
almost daily disasters such as the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria?
The evidence is that the environment, as the carrier of SD, suffers
unpredictable, uncertain and sudden changes, which it cannot compensate
with natural mechanisms, and especially to be sustainable, since SD does not
have a risk assessment. That is why we should certainly move from suitable
to: smart development.

AB - Human milk is the best source of nutrition for infants and babies. Apart from essential nutrients, it
contains bioactive components which are crucial for growth and effective in developing the gut
microbiota and immune system. The World Health Organization recommends the use of human milk in the nutrition of preterm and low birth weight infants. Preterm infants require specific nutrition to overcome growth deficits and prevent postnatal growth failure. To ensure that preterm babies receive adequate amounts of nutrients and healthy doses of bioactive components, human milk banks collect mothers’ own or donor human milk when their mothers are unable to provide enough breast milk. Milk stored in banks should be thermally treated to ensure that it is safe for consumption. Common thermal treatments include freeze storage and pasteurization, which may alter the nutritional value of milk. This study aimed to compare the effects of thermal treatments on the nutrient and antioxidant potential of different infant foods. Storage and pasteurization processes alter the basic nutritional composition and antioxidant capacity of human milk. Lipid and protein properties of human milk are affected by storage and pasteurization. Lipid content is further reduced when milk is pasteurized after freezing. Although freezing followed by pasteurization is common in milk banks, it negatively impacts the quality of milk. However, deficiencies in preterm milk after storage and pasteurization can be compensated by a fortifier. To provide adequate nutrition for infants, individual milk supplementation with quality fortifiers should be used in milk banks, ensuring higher protein, lipid and antioxidant components that are required for normal infant development.

AB - Objectives and Study: Human milk (HM) is a complex biological fluid with an antioxidative function. HM feeding has an important role in prevention of antioxidative stress in preterm infants. Evaluation of total antioxidative capacity (TAC) in milk of mothers f preterm infants during lactation (colostrum, transitional and mature milk). Methods: Thirty mothers of preterm infants (infants born before 37 weeks of gestational age) who established lactation were enrolled in this cohort study. TAC of colostrum, transitional and mature milk of these mothers was evaluated using the fluorimetric method of determination of antioxidative capacity of oxygen radical absorption (ORAC). Study protocol was approved by Ethical Comittee of Institute for neonatology, all mothers gave their written consent prior to participation. Study was supported by Ministry of education, science and tehchnological development, Serbia. Results: ORAC method showed that TAC was highest in colostrum, gradual decrease was registered during lactation until reaching its lowest level in mature milk. Conclusions: Significant changes in antioxidative characteristics of human milk occur during the lactation period. Colostrum has a higher TAC compared to mature milk, as shown with ORAC method. This result distinguishes colostrum as a superior sample of HM, indicating its importance in nutrition of preterm infants.

AB - The report highlighted the most modem view of the change in intestinal microflora during life, the role of children's nutrition in the formation of microbiota, the use and effect of probiotics and prebiotics, synbiotics and postbiotics. The speaker drew the audience's attention to the potential mechanisms of action of probiotics and prebiotics, the role of which is not easy to separate, since the main mechanisms of action of prebiotics are achieved by stimulating the growth of the number of probiotics and are correlated with the effects caused by probiotics. In addition, probiotics constitute a significant portion of the functional food market, which is gaining popularity among consumers for the prevention of various functional disorders. Probiotics are means of prevention of gastrointestinal tract dysfunction and strengthening of defense mechanisms. The meeting was attended by students of various courses and educational training programs, teachers and scientists of the Institute of Biology and Medicine. In the conditions of a shortage of professional communication and chronic stress during the war, meetings on such topical topics for the modern world always arouse interest and lively discussion. For those who want to learn more and improve professionally, there are no boundaries and limitations.

AB - Metals are widespread in nature and organisms are constantly exposed to them through a variety of sources, therefore, there is a need for microorganisms to have the ability to respond to potentially toxic metals in their environment. One of such metals is chromium (Cr), and the toxicity of Cr is dependent on oxidation state and solubility. Chromate (Cr(VI)) is a powerful oxidizing agent, and is more toxic then Cr (III).
The aim of this work was to determine the influence of chromate on the respiration and enzymatic activity of baker’s and brewer’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
