AB - Re/Pd-TiO2/SiO2 and Co/Mo-Al2O3/SiO2 aerogel catalysts were synthesized using sol-gel method and supercritical drying in excess solvent, and investigated in the hydrodesulphurisation (HDS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyl dibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT). The influence of supercritical drying on the final catalytic properties of the materials was determined by parallel synthesis of aerogels and xerogels for Re/Pd-TiO2/SiO2 catalysts. The sol-gel method and supercritical drying were found to result in amorphous aerogels with relatively high degree of uniformity, of both supports and active phases. Corresponding xerogels were found to be similar to aerogels in terms of composition and structure, but characterized by lower specific surface areas. Catalytic activity of Co/Mo-Al2O3/SiO2 aerogel catalysts in HDS of DBT and 4,6-DMDBT has shown no major improvement in comparison to conventional Co/Mo catalyst. On the other hand, Re/Pd-TiO2/SiO2 aerogels, obtained with the addition of mesitylene or without it, achieved 70 % and 64 % higher conversion of 4,6-DMDBT than conventional Co/Mo catalyst, respectively. Increased catalytic activity can be attributed to well dispersed Re and Pd active phases across the catalyst structure, good incorporation of Ti within silica matrix, increased mesopore volumes and high specific surface areas.

AB - In order to reduce negative influence of fossil fuels on environment, use of various renewable resources is highly promoted. Terpenes, naturally occurring in plants, can be added to petroleum fuel as its substitute up to a certain share. Thermodynamic properties of a fuel under high pressure and moderate temperature conditions are of significant importance for engine efficiency. This work reports density measurements of pure p-cymene, α-pinene, limonene and citral at temperatures (293.15–413.15) K and pressures (0.1–60) MPa, applying an Anton Paar DMA HP measuring cell. Density data were fitted by modified Tammann-Tait equation where the absolute average percentage deviation between measured and calculated densities was about 0.010%. The obtained parameters were used to estimate the isothermal compressibility, the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient, the internal pressure, and the difference between specific heat capacity at constant pressure and at constant volume. For examined compounds, all thermodynamic properties, except the internal pressure, decrease with pressure rise along an isotherm and increase as temperature increases at a constant pressure. The intersection point of isotherms for the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient for pure citral was registered at pressure 47 MPa, while for other analyzed terpenes the intersection point is above 60 MPa, outside the measurements pressure range.

AB - This study presents preparation and characterization of ethyl cellulose based nanocomposites. Successful use of simple solvent casting technique provided nanocomposites with high loads of barium ferrite magnetic nanopowder in the polymer matrix, promising significant improvement of mechanical properties. Investigation of morphology revealed formation of agglomerates that are still on nanoscopic level. Nanocomposite thin films with a higher content of the magnetic powder showed substantial enhancement of break strength, elongation and microhardness compared to the pure ethyl cellulose, which was the primary aim of this research.

AB - The study of the synthesis of anticorrosive inhibitors, based on chemically modified tannins, and
their use in alkyd based coatings to improve anticorrosive properties is presented in this work.
Two methods of tannin modification were applied: direct method using ammonium hydroxide,
ammonium hydroxide/ammonium chloride buffer or diethylenetriamine (DETA); and a two-step
method including tannin modification with epichlorohydrin (ECH) in first step to produce epoxy
modified tannin, ET, and further modification with heteroaromatic amines or linseed oil fatty acids
(LFA) in second step. The obtained anticorrosive additives were characterized using ATR-FTIR,
1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. Epoxy, amino, hydroxyl, acid and iodine
values of the synthesized inhibitors were determined according to standard methods. The
prepared alkyd coating with tannin inhibitors was tested according to standard SRPS EN ISO
4628 method. Anticorrosive coating containing modified tannin based additive showed increased
anticorrosive properties, good adhesion and coverage comparing to the coating with zinc
phosphate additive. The alkyd coating films based on ET-LFA and ET modified with 2-amino-5-
mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole showed best anticorrosive results.

AB - The mechanical properties of systems consisting of copper coatings
electrodeposited on both brass sheet (BS) and thick electrodeposited nickel
coating (ED Ni) substrates have been investigated. The electrodeposition of
copper coatings was performed with and without the ultrasound assistance. The
ultrasound application decreases root mean square (RMS) roughness of deposited Cu coating on both applied substrates, as obtained from non-contact
AFM measurement. The coating roughness is highly dependent on the substrate roughness, being the smallest for the Cu coatings deposited on ED Ni
substrate with the ultrasound mixing. The hardness and adhesion properties
were characterized using the Vickers microindentation test. Model of Korsunsky was applied to the experimental data for determination the film hardness and the model of Chen-Gao was used for the adhesion evaluation. The
introduction of ultrasonic agitation caused the changes in the film microstructure, and consequently in the mechanical properties. The copper coatings on
both substrates, have higher hardness when deposited from electrolyte with
ultrasound agitation. Although the type of the substrate has the major influence
on the adhesion strength, it can be said that Cu electrodeposition with ultrasonic mixing contributes to an increase in adhesion
Chen-
-Gao.

abstract = "The mechanical properties of systems consisting of copper coatings
electrodeposited on both brass sheet (BS) and thick electrodeposited nickel
coating (ED Ni) substrates have been investigated.
Although the type of the substrate has the major influence
on the adhesion strength, it can be said that Cu electrodeposition with ultrasonic mixing contributes to an increase in adhesion, Испитиванa су механичкa својствa композитних система који се састоје од електрохемијски исталожених превлака бакра на месингу (BS) и дебелим електрохемијски исталоженим превлакама никла на месинганој фолији (ED Ni) као супстратима.
Chen-
-Gao.

AB - In this work an attempt was made to produce epoxy coating doped with ceria (CeO2) and/or zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles, in single step electrophoretric deposition process. Deposition was carried out on AA6060 cataforetically from epoxy resin suspension containing synthesized stable aqueous colloidal dispersions (sols) of CeO2 and ZrO2. The influence of ceria and zirconia nanoparticles on the physicochemical characteristics of epoxy coatings was evaluated by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and adhesion measurements, while their corrosion stability during immersion in 0.5 M NaCl solution was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All ceria and/or zirconia containing coatings showed better corrosion stability and adhesion than pure epoxy coating, while between doped epoxy coatings one with CeO2/ZrO2 exhhibited the greatest values of charge-transfer resistance due to synergetic effect of both types of added nanoparticles.

AB - This study presents the route for preparation of the membrane-supporting materials with good mechanical behavior and adsorption properties that provide functionality and are easy to use in various environments. Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane-supported hydrogels were prepared via liquid phase inversion process with photopolymerization and monomer crosslinking. The obtained membranes had asymmetric structure containing dense skin on the top of a porous hydrogel as it is verified by scanning electron microscopy. Software analysis of the pore size revealed that fine pores enabled availability of the membrane active centers to metal cations. The membranes with a higher content of the polymer showed significantly improved mechanical properties compared with commonly used ion exchange membranes, which is crucial for the wastewater treatment application. Adsorption kinetics analysis showed that the hydrogel-rich bottom layer has significantly higher adsorption ability in comparison to the top layer. Adsorption kinetics of the bottom side was described by the first-order kinetics model, whereas for the the top side, phase-boundary controlled reaction model was used.

AB - Regarding their extraordinary properties, such as biological and chemical sta-bility, photocatalytic activity, cost-effectiveness, the titanium-based nanoma-terials are the subject of an intense research. Although titania is well knownas a photocatalyst, the titanates are promising candidates for the wide rangeof applications including ion exchange, high adsorption capacity toward or-ganic molecules and radioactive toxic metal ions[2], in photovoltaics, H- andLi-storage, gas sensors, etc. The hydrothermal process became a very import-ant way to obtain these materials in nanostructural form since the discovery ofanatase-based alkaline hydrothermal treatment reported by Kasuga et al. [1].In this work, nine products were obtained by modifying the experimental conditions(6, 12 and 18 h at 110, 135 and 160 °C) of hydrothermal treatment of starting nano-anatase in less alkaline medium (5 mol dm–3 NaOH solution) than usual. Specimensare labeled as TT–t, where T is temperature of the treatment and t is duration of thetreatment. The step-by-step optimization of this simple and costless procedure wasnecessary in order to obtain a pure titanate phase and to finally distinguish the ti-tanates from titania in terms of structure and microstructure. The nanocrystallinesamples were characterized by HRTEM/SAED, XRPD, EDS, TG, UV-VIS and BETtechniques.According to XRPD and HRTEM, the complete conversion of anatase to puretitanate phase was achieved after energetically the most intensive treatment, i.e.18 h at 160 °C. Among other products, a certain amount of anatase remained, with its decreasing content as the temperature and time of hydrothermal treatmentincreases. This increment significantly improves the solubility of TiO2 promoting thechanges in morphology from the approximately spherical anatase nanoparticles intoelongated titanate nanosheets (Fig. 1). Based on EDS and TG, the Na0.4H1.6Ti2O5·H2Oformula could be assigned to T160_18. The HRTEM/SAED revealed the shortening ofinterplanar distances along aaxis because of the dehydratation due to the high vacuumof the TEM chamber and high energy of the electron beam irradiation confirming thelayered structure of Na0.4H1.6Ti2O5·H2O (Fig. 2). Because of the poor characterizationof titanate nanosheets found in literature, the optical and textural properties ofproducts were also investigated. A blue shift toward lower wavelength is observedwith the temperature increasing being the most pronounced for the T160_18 (Fig. 3).This is the consequence of full transformation of TiO2 into Na0.4H1.6Ti2O5·H2O. Forthe same reason, the values of specific surface areas decreased with the temperatureincreasing. As shown in this work, the structure, morphology and texture of samples stronglydepend of the conditions of hydrothermal treatment. The production of single phasetitanate and its detailed microscopic characterization finally allowed the clarificationof long-standing confusion between titania and titanates.References:[1] T Kasuga et al, Langmuir 14 (1998), p. 3160.[2] Y Zhang et al, RSC Advances 5 (2015), p. 79479.[3] The authors acknowledge funding from the Ministry of Education, Science andTechnological Development of the Republic of Serbia, Grant Numbers III45007and III45019. AB - Goals. The goal of this study was a development of biocompatible composite hydrogels, structurally similar to native bone tissue, by incorporation of ~60 wt % of calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) into a matrix of hydrogels. Also, a possibility to control swelling kinetic and equilibrium swelling degree (SDeq) of hydrogels, by altering the degree of neutralization of the precursor (DN) was examined. Methods. Composite hydrogels, based on HA and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), were synthesized by free-radical polymerization with different DN. Theoretical content of HA in synthesized composites was 60 wt %. Composites were synthesized by methods of dynamic mechanical analysis and scanning electron microscopy. SDeq and swelling kinetic were examined in distilled water and simulated body fluid. Results. Morphological observations revealed uniform distribution and strong bond of spherical HA particles within the polymer matrix. Swelling analyses demonstrated that SDeq is directly proportional to DN, while rheological examinations indicated inverse proportion between DN and storage modulus, but due to the HA particles inclusion, mechanical properties of composites were significantly better compared to monophasic PMAA hydrogels. Significance. Simple method of synthesis of composite hydrogels with high content of filler nanoparticles is presented. Incorporation of HA nanoparticles significantly improved mechanical properties of hydrogels, while at the same time was demonstrated a possibility to control swelling kinetic by influencing the DN.
Svi sintetisani kompoziti sadrže visok maseni udeo HA (~60 mas %). .

Takođe, ispitan je uticaj neutralizacije prekursora polimerne mreže na kinetiku bubrenja i ravnotežni stepen bubrenja (SDeq).Metode - Kompozitni hidrogelovi, sastavljeni od HA i poli(metakrilne kiseline) (PMAA), sintetisani su slobodno-radikalskom polimerizacijom, pri različitim stepenima neutralizacije prekursora (SN). Svi sintetisani kompoziti sadrže visok maseni udeo HA (~60 mas %). .",

AB - In this study, electrospinning combined with sol-gel technique is applied in order to produce magnetic nickel ferrite (Ni-ferrite) nanofibers. The prepared Ni-ferrite gel was mixed with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) solution which was used as a spinning aid to enable spinnability of the mixture. Structural and morphological characteristics of the asspun ferrite gel/PVP composite web structure and calcinated Ni-ferrite nanofibers were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Phase composition analysis was carried out by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS). The obtained results suggest that the pure nanocrystalline NiFe2O4 dense mat to the almost coral-like structure of fibers with diameters ranging from hundreds of nanometers to few micrometers was obtained. The results of MS analysis revealed the existence of a crystallite size distribution within the material as well as the existence of a superparamagnetic fraction with very small crystallite sizes (<13nm). Magnetic behavior of the obtained material at elevated temperatures was also scrutinized using thermomagnetic measurements (TM) up to 800 degrees C.

AB - Well adhered, homogenous coatings were obtained from deep eutectic solvents (DES) based on choline chloride and urea, at current densities up to 20 mA cm-2. The coatings' morphology was analyzed by atomic force microscopy, determining the agglomerates size and distribution. The corrosion stability of these deposits was analyzed in 3 wt. % NaCl solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurements, and compared with coatings deposited from a conventional water-based electrolyte. The influence of deposition current density and surface morphology, as well as of DES type, on the corrosion resistance was analyzed. It was shown that electrodeposition from DES enables incorporation of greater Mn amounts, that induced a pseudo-passivation effect, which, in turn, resulted in superior corrosion resistance.

AB - PtAu systems are recognized as good catalysts for the oxidation of formic acid electrooxidation, which is investigated as a possible anodic reaction in low-temperature fuel cells. In this research, bimetallic PtAu nanoparticles, supported on high area carbon Vulcan XC-72R, were synthesized by water in oil microemulsion method. The precursor reduction process took place in a single microemulsion, simultaneously, in the presence of 35% of HCl in the water phase, as a capping agent. Electrochemical behavior of the PtAu/C catalyst was investigated at as prepared electrodes by cyclic voltammetry in 0.5M H2SO4 as a supporting electrolyte, and also in the oxidation of adsorbed CO. The results were compared to the Pt/C catalyst prepared by the same synthesis procedure. PtAu/C catalyst powder was also characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Average particle diameter, of 2nm, was calculated from XRD data, which is close to the value of 2.82 nm obtained from TEM images. Compared to identically synthesized Pt nanoparticles, the bimetallic ones are significantly smaller. EDS maps of PtAu/C sample confirm the presence of both elements, and indicate a very fine distribution of Au in the sample. Elemental composition of about 20% Au and 80% Pt was also determined from these maps. Prepared catalyst was tested for formic acid electro-oxidation in terms of its activity and stability over the long term cycling. The voltammograms recorded indicate the change of reaction mechanism and better utilization of the catalyst surface in comparison to Pt/C.
Snimljeni voltamogrami ukazuju na promenu reakcionog mehanizma i bolje iskorišćenje površine katalizatora u poređenju ra Pt/C katalizatorom sintetizovanim istim postupkom.

AB - Continuous catalytic reforming (CCR) is known to convert refinery naphtha to a high-octane liquid product, also known as the reformate. In this paper, a First Principle Reaction Section Model for a CCR process is presented. Even though CCR is a well-established technology, the application of advanced, real-time optimization techniques that are able to quickly respond to any imposed changes onto the process, are necessary in the refinery business. This becomes particularly important as a result of changes in profit margin, changes in operating cost, and the introduction of new environmental legislations. Hence, we present a kinetic model for the CCR process using the so-called "lumped" concept. The reactors have been modeled using a quasi-steady-state approach. The unknown model parameters have been estimated by bench marking the First Principle Reaction Section results with a commercial CCR process owned by the Hungarian Oil and Gas Public Limited Company (INA-MOL). The proposed model has been tested and compared to data obtained from an existing CCR plant. The predictions of the model were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The relative absolute errors between the measured and model estimated variables have been found to be lower than 2%. The relative absolute error associated with the required fired heater duties were less than 1.0%. Simulating the reaction section of the CCR process requires less than 0.1 s of CPU time, which clearly indicates that this model can be very suitable for performing optimization studies. Moreover, this study shows that, although there is fluctuation in the composition of feedstock, the lumped kinetic approach was capable to predict the behavior of the CCR process well.

Moreover, this study shows that, although there is fluctuation in the composition of feedstock, the lumped kinetic approach was capable to predict the behavior of the CCR process well.

method for assessing the mechanical properties of thin films. This testing method uses controlled contact at a single point of an indenter and chosen material which induces the plastic deformation in material under indenter. The measured hardness is considered as the composite hardness, because the substrate
participates in the plastic deformation caused by indentation. This research has been carried out in order to analyze and compare the hardness response of different composite systems consist of monolayer electrodeposited copper thin film on brass and steel alloys as the substrates. The influence of the electrodeposition parameters and of the substrate on the hardness and interlayer adhesion were investigated by Vickers microhardness testing for different load.

AB - Unsaturated polyester resin (UPe)-based nanocomposites and fumed silica Aerosil R812S, R805 and R816, and R200 modified with phenyl terminal group, R200NPh, were prepared. UPe resins were synthesized from maleic anhydride and products of glycolysis, obtained by polyethylene terephthalate depolymerization with dipropylene glycol in the presence of tetrabutyl titanate catalyst. The obtained unsaturated polyesters were characterized by acid, hydroxyl, and iodine values and by FTIR and NMR analysis. The microstructural analysis of the prepared nanocomposites, performed by using transmission electron microscopy, confirmed that silica nanoparticles formed chain-like aggregates in the polymer matrix. The presence of modified silica nanoparticles had no influence on the glass transition temperature and thermal stability of polyester matrix. The tensile modulus, stress at break, and hardness of cured products increased with increasing silica content. The impact strength of cured samples was not influenced by the silica content.

AB - Activated carbons with high specific surface area (even above 2000 m(2) g(-1)) and pronounced microporosity are prepared in two-stage process involving conventional carbonization of waste hemp fibers and subsequent activation by potassium hydroxide. Samples with considerably different surface and intrinsic micro-and mesoporous properties are obtained at different carbonization and activation conditions. The improvements of the capacitive properties are found upon increase in carbonization temperature, since it considerably influenced the specific surface area and the content of surface oxygen groups. Cyclic voltammetry experiments reveal the dependence of specific capacitance on the sweep rate due to the characteristic porous structure of the samples. The highest measured value in 1 M H2SO4 solution is 122 F g(-1). The electrochemical impedance data indicates eight-branch transmission line equivalent electric behavior of activated carbons.

AB - Production of high-performance nanocomposite materials obtained from unsaturated polyester resin, based on products of the waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) recycling, and modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes is presented. Di-hydroxy functional glycolysates, synthesized by catalytic depolymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with propylene glycol, were used for the unsaturated polyester resin synthesis. The structure of the obtained glycolysis product and unsaturated polyester resin were characterized by using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, and by acid, iodine, and hydroxyl value. Nanofillers were prepared by direct and two-step amidation of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Direct amidation with diallylamine produced multi-walled carbon nanotube-diallylamine reactive nanofiller. Two-step modification with diamines: hexamethylenediamine and p-phenylenediamine gave multi-walled carbon nanotubehexamethylenediamine and multi-walled carbon nanotube-p-phenylenediamine nanofiller, respectively, whose amidation with methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acids gave multi-walled carbon nanotube-hexamethylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid and multi-walled carbon nanotube-p-phenylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid nanofiller, respectively. Influences of vinyl functionalities on mechanical properties of nanocomposite were analyzed from tensile strength (sigma(b)), elongation (epsilon(b)) and Young's modulus (E) determination. An increase of 97.4, 119 and 139% of sigma(b) was obtained for nanocomposites with addition of 0.25 wt.% of diallylamine, p-phenylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid and hexamethylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid multi-walled carbon nanotubes, respectively. Short techno-economic analysis, performed on the basis of fixed and variable unsaturated polyester resin production costs, showed satisfactory potential profit, which could be realized by the implementation of the presented technology.

AB - Graphene (Gr) and natural polymer chitosan (CS) were introduced to hydroxyapatite (HAP) to produce a three-component composite coating, which was fabricated by cathodic electrophoretic deposition on Ti substrates in an ethanol suspension. These HAP/CS/Gr coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical measurements and found that the graphene into HAP/CS composites significantly improves their morphology, thermal stability, and bioactivity. Both HAP/CS and HAP/CS/Gr composite coatings are classified as non-cytotoxic when tested against healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), while antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coil could not be verified.

abstract = "Graphene (Gr) and natural polymer chitosan (CS) were introduced to hydroxyapatite (HAP) to produce a three-component composite coating, which was fabricated by cathodic electrophoretic deposition on Ti substrates in an ethanol suspension. Both HAP/CS and HAP/CS/Gr composite coatings are classified as non-cytotoxic when tested against healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), while antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coil could not be verified.",

AB - Poly(aniline-co-(m-aminobenzoic acid)) was synthesized electrochemically at graphite electrode under galvanostatic conditions. Aqueous electrolyte for synthesis was consisted of HCl and different amount of aniline and m-aminobenzoic acid. The presence of the meta positioned carboxylic group in m-aminobenzoic acid influenced higher co-polymerization potential, different morphology and electrochemical behavior of copolymers compared to polyaniline. Electrochemical activity is achieved by proton exchange in neutral environment that can result in a faster charge/discharge process, which is in the case of PANI limited by slow anion exchange, making this material promising for consideration in super-capacitors and in biological system.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60 degrees C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30 degrees C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37 degrees C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller.

AB - The multistage synthesis of the multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) modified with polyamidoamine dendrimers, A1/and A2/MWCNT, capable of cation removal, is presented in this work, as well as novel adsorbents based on these precursor materials and modified with goethite nano-deposit, alpha-FeOOH, A1/ and A2/MWCNT-alpha-FeO(OH) adsorbents used for As(V) removal. In a batch test, the influence of pH, contact time, initial ion concentration and temperature on adsorption efficiency were studied. Adsorption data modelling by the Langmuir isotherm, revealed good adsorption capacities (in mg g(-1)) of 18.8 for As(V) and 60.1 and 44.2 for Pb2+ and Cd2+ on A2/MWCNT, respectively. Also, 27.6 and 29.8 mg g(-1) of As(V) on A1/ and A2/MWCNT-alpha-FeO(OH), respectively, were removed. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic processes. Results of the study of influences of competitive ions: bicarbonate, sulfate, phosphate, silicate, chromate, fluoride and natural organic matter (NOM), i.e., humic acid (HA), showed the highest effect of phosphate on the decrease of arsenate adsorption. Time-dependent adsorption was best described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Weber-Morris model which predicted intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step. Also, activation energy (E-a/kJ mol(-1)): 8.85 for Cd2+, 9.25 for Pb2+ and 7.98 for As(V), were obtained from kinetic data.

AB - We propose a systematic model for the optimum design of Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) used for power generation from multiple heat sources available at different temperatures. The model enables the automated generation of inclusive and flexible ORC cascades and is optimized using a global optimization algorithm. Design parameters include the number of ORC cascades, the shared structure of the heat exchanger network, the operating conditions and the working fluid used in each cascade in order to identify an overall ORC structure that maximizes the power output. Results indicate significant operating improvements from using a double ORC cascade with different working fluids.

AB - This work presents a systematic approach toward the design of Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) for the generation of power from multiple heat sources available at different temperature levels. The design problem is approached in a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) formulation where an inclusive and flexible ORC model is automatically evolved by a deterministic algorithm for global optimization. The basic building block of the model is the ORC cascade which consists of a heat extraction, a power generation, a condensation and a liquid pressurization section. The aim of the optimization is to determine the optimum number of ORC cascades, the structure of the heat exchanger network shared among different cascades, the operating conditions and the working fluid used in each cascade in order to identify an overall ORC structure that maximizes the power output. The approach is illustrated through a case study which indicates that a system of two waste heat sources is best exploited through two interconnected ORC utilizing different working fluids.
