AB - New binary catalytic systems based on sulphated zirconia-alumina were synthesized by controlled hydrolysis of alkoxides using relative molar ratios of constituents 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 in favour of zirconia. The obtained differences in the final catalytic material’s properties may be related to organic precursor memory effect, the applied calcinations temperatures and used alumina contents. The addition of alumina to zirconia affected the structural and surface properties stabilizing bare zirconia by means of slower phase transformation of tetragonal zirconia crystal phase into monoclinic one, further resulting in smaller crystallites sizes and higher surface density of acidic function (sulphates). The best alumina impact on physico-chemical properties was achieved when the highest amount of alumina (e.g. 50%) and lower calcination temperature (500°C) were used, causing relatively high steady-state activity in isomerization of n-hexane at reaction temperature 250 °C. On the other hand, higher calcination temperature (600 °C) played a role in the genesis of greater sulphate density. Catalytic activity and selectivity are expressed as a complex synergistic function of relative density of acid sites together with positive status of other optimized physico-chemical properties of the catalytic material (by activation and calcination temperatures).

AB - The objectives and effects of refractory materials recycling, as well as the potential
industries from which waste refractories suitable for recycling can be collected, will be
discussed in this paper. After the end of its service life, the refractory material is usually
disposed of at industrial landfills or recycled. The main motive for the reuse of refractories is the
sustainable conservation of natural resources and environmental protection by reducing
CO2 emissions and industrial landfills, reducing landfill costs and users’ costs. The effects
achieved by refractory materials recycling are the cost savings of raw materials and disposal,
the improvement of the environment, the product line expansion, and consequently the
opportunities for products' placement in hitherto unknown and inaccessible markets, as well
as closer cooperation between users and suppliers. Respecting recycling policies brings us
closer to the concept of zero waste.

AB - Self-compacting concrete (SCC) contains fine mineral fillers such as limestone powder. The idea of this study was to partially replace limestone with waste sulfur since it is hydrophobic, insoluble in water and therefore chemically inert and to compare the properties of produced concrete samples. Fresh concrete properties included: slump-flow, t500, V-funnel time, L-box ratio, segregation ratio, density, and entrained air content. Hardened concrete was tested for compressive, flexural and bond strengths, ultrasonic velocity, dynamic elasticity modulus, dynamic Poisson’s ratio, and microstructure. Flowability and segregation increased, while bulk density, compressive and flexural strength, dynamic elasticity modulus and ultrasonic velocity slight declined. Times t500 and V-funnel time, L-box ratio and entrained air changed insignificantly. Considering that all properties should remain or improve in case of waste valorization and the criteria should set to satisfy requirements for SCC, this study proved that all mixtures can be used for structural applications.

AB - Nickel−cobalt (Ni−Co) alloy powders were produced galvanostatically by using sulphate electrolytes with
various ratios of Ni2+/Co2+ (mole ratios). The morphology, phase structure, chemical composition and magnetic
properties were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), atomic emission
spectrometer (AES), and SQUID-based magnetometer, respectively. Morphology of the particles changed from
cauliflower-like and dendritic to coral-like and spongy-like ones with increasing Ni2+/Co2+ ratio from 0.25 to 4.0. XRD
analysis of the Ni−Co powders revealed that the decrease of Ni2+/Co2+ ratios (the increase of Co content) caused a
change of structure from face centered cubic (FCC) obtained for the ratios of 4.0, 1.5 and 0.67 to a mixture of FCC and
hexagonal closed-packed (HCP) phases for the ratio of 0.25. The increasing content of nickel led to change of
mechanism of electrolysis from irregular (up to ~40 wt.% Ni in the electrolytes) to close to equilibrium (between
~40 and 60 wt.% Ni in the electrolytes) and anomalous co-deposition (over 60 wt.% Ni in the electrolytes) type. All of
the obtained Ni−Co alloy samples behaved as soft magnetic materials while their magnetic parameters showed
immediate composition dependence since both coercivity and saturation magnetization almost linearly increased with
increase of the Co content.

AB - The cold spray technique was employed in this study to produce pure nickel (Ni) and nickel-Inconel 718 powder deposits on duplex stainless steel substrates. High quality coatings were manufactured using nitrogen as the propellant gas. The coatings exhibited satisfactory Inconel 718 (In718) retention within the Ni matrix due to the highly ductile binder phase necessary for fabrication. The characterization of the coating microstructures was implemented by means of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and microhardness testing. In addition, the erosion resistance of both coatings was evaluated by performing cavitation erosion tests, with the analysis of the eroded surfaces revealing different erosion mechanisms for each coating. The results demonstrated the efficiency of the cold spray technique for use in the production of metal-metal matrix composite coatings and the potential of In718 use in applications which demand enhanced cavitation erosion resistance.

The results demonstrated the efficiency of the cold spray technique for use in the production of metal-metal matrix composite coatings and the potential of In718 use in applications which demand enhanced cavitation erosion resistance.",

AB - Macroporous silica ceramic was obtained using clay and diatomite. Boric acid as a low-cost additive in the amount of 1 wt% was used. These porous materials were obtained at low forming pressure (40-80 MPa) and lower sintering temperature (850-1300 ºC) for 4h in air. The influence of boric acid, forming pressure, and sintering temperature on the microstructure, porosity parameters, and mechanical properties of obtained porous monoliths were investigated. As-received and the modified samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, SEM, and mercury porosimetry measurements. As for modified clay and diatomite, they were pressed at 60 MPa and then sintered at 1150 ºC, obtaining porosities of about 10 % and 60 %, respectively. Both of the analyzed samples had the pore diameter in the range of macroporous materials. The pore diameters of clay samples are ranging from 0.1-10 μm, whereas the pore diameter of diatomite samples was slightly lower with values ranging from 0.05-5 μm. Modified diatomite samples have a lower Young modulus in comparison to modified clay samples.

AB - Establishing a wind park presents a complex enterprise, which involves numerous activities, often impossible to synchronize and drive into the appropriate time-frame. Therefore, in some cases, based on reasonable suspicion, a concern rises regarding the quality of already built components of structures. In such cases, the launch of suitable assessment procedures is required. Stand-ards then define proper methods of in-situ assessment of concrete quality. Statistical methods are implemented in the analysis of the concrete components following the strict rules which, if executed correctly by the well-trained personnel of accredited institutions, provide exact and valid insight in the situation. This paper aspires to describe such procedure on the basis of thorough in-situ investigation and subsequent analysis. In this study, a large number of 255 core samples were taken from 17 wind tower concrete structure elements – foundations (out of 57 wind towers in total), and the compressive strength of already placed concrete was evaluated based on this set of results. The compressive strength is proved to be a good parameter for evaluating other aspects of concrete quality, mechanical properties, and durability.

AB - In this research, two non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, thermal vision analysis and image analysis, were implemented for monitoring the surface changes- erosion of mullite-based ceramic samples in conditions of cavitation exposure. Thermal imaging analysis was focused on determining the temperature line profile at the end of the cavitation experiment. Image analysis is a powerful tool for the quantification of degradation level caused by different impacts and conditions. Based on the results of the image analysis, the degradation level during the testing was determined, as well as number of formed pits with their characteristics (average diameter and area). The results performed by both methods were discussed in order to obtain the optimal procedure that should be followed for estimating degradation caused by cavitation erosion.

AB - In this work an attempt was made to produce epoxy coating doped with ceria (CeO2) and/or zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles, in single step electrophoretric deposition process. Deposition was carried out on AA6060 cataforetically from epoxy resin suspension containing synthesized stable aqueous colloidal dispersions (sols) of CeO2 and ZrO2. The influence of ceria and zirconia nanoparticles on the physicochemical characteristics of epoxy coatings was evaluated by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and adhesion measurements, while their corrosion stability during immersion in 0.5 M NaCl solution was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All ceria and/or zirconia containing coatings showed better corrosion stability and adhesion than pure epoxy coating, while between doped epoxy coatings one with CeO2/ZrO2 exhhibited the greatest values of charge-transfer resistance due to synergetic effect of both types of added nanoparticles.

AB - The biological quality and chemical composition of alloys used in dental practice change during heat treatment.
Often the residues of the previous cast are not disposed of but are reused and recycled until consumed. Thus, manufactured dental restorations have modified biological quality and chemical composition, and compromised biocompatibility. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of repeated casting on the cytotoxicity of the silver-palladium (Ag-Pd) alloy. Our results showed that repeated casting of the Ag-Pd dental alloy affected its biocompatibility by promoting toxicity against transformed fibroblasts in a contact-independent manner. A strong decrease in cell proliferation, induction of senescence and massive cell death were observed in cultures exposed only to a medium previously incubated with dental alloy samples. The obtained data indicated that toxicity mediated by the accumulation of the Ag, Pd, Cu and Zn cations released from the Ag-Pd material was enhanced by recasting. The induction of cell senescence and subsequent apoptotic
and necrotic death were accompanied by amplified intracellular production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, suggesting their involvement in the cell destruction process. Therefore, compromised biocompatibility after recasting with the Ag-Pd alloy can be the cause of serious local cell destruction, as observed in clinical practice.

AB - Modified activated carbon cloth is prepared by mechanochemical modification of viscose rayon carbon cloth. The effects of different milling atmospheres, in the air and inert conditions, were investigated. Changes in kind and number of acidic and basic surface groups on the surface of activated carbon cloth, upon modification, as well as before and after the sorption of arsenic were determined. Higher number of basic groups responsible for the removal of arsenic ions was achieved by modification under inert conditions. Breakage and collapse of cylindrical fibers, decrease of particle sizes, change in the shape and consistency of the particles, as well as increase of microstructural disorder i.e. the loss of turbostratic structure occurred upon milling. pHPZC values increased from 4.46 to 5.04 and 5.77 after the air and inert milling, respectively. Adsorption followed pseudo second order kinetics with chemisorption as rate-controlling step. Langmuir isotherm best fit the equilibrium data and maximum adsorption capacity is 5.5 mg g−1 at a pH value close to 7.0, typical for groundwater. The mechanism of arsenic adsorption onto activated carbon cloth milled in inert atmosphere involved electrostatic and dispersive interactions between arsenic ions and carbon particles in wide pH range (from 2 to 10).

abstract = "Modified activated carbon cloth is prepared by mechanochemical modification of viscose rayon carbon cloth. The mechanism of arsenic adsorption onto activated carbon cloth milled in inert atmosphere involved electrostatic and dispersive interactions between arsenic ions and carbon particles in wide pH range (from 2 to 10).",

AB - Refractory castables, like all ceramic materials, contain numerous structural defects in the form of flaws, pores, microcracks, and impurities. These materials are often used in conditions of exposure to sudden and cyclical temperature changes, that is, to thermal shock. Such conditions can cause the creation of cracks in the material structure. Namely, the formation of new microcracks and the growth of those that already existed take place as a consequence of thermal shock. The decrease of mechanical strength as well as a general weakening and degradation of the material are also happening. This research evaluates the effects of thermal shock on high alumina low cement castable. The synthesized samples of one castable composition, based on alumina as an aggregate and calcium-aluminate cement, with the same cure conditions, were sintered at three different temperatures (1100°C, 1300°C, and 1600°C) with a dwell time of 3 hours. A water quench test was applied as an experimental method for thermal shock resistance testing. Morphological analysis of the samples before and during the testing was done. The changes in the material during thermal shock testing were monitored by destructive and non-destructive methods. Image analysis of the photographs of the samples' surfaces and SEM microphotographs of the sample cross-sections were applied to monitor degradation at the surface and inside the bulk. Ultrasonic measurements were used for monitoring internal degradation and elastic properties. Both non-destructive methods also served for homogeneity analysis. Overall material degradation was determined by measuring the mechanical strength of the samples using a classic method according to the standardized procedure. According to the results of performed experiments and analyses, it is evident that during the thermal shock, the surface and interior of the samples sintered at 1600°C behave differently compared with those sintered at 1100°C and 1300°C. The investigations have revealed that all three series of the obtained alumina-based refractory castables displayed high resistance to thermal shock since they withstood more than 40 thermal shock cycles without cracking and with a level of degradation below 50%, even under 25%. The samples sintered at 1300°C exhibited the best thermal shock resistance with more than 110 cycles without cracking. This behavior recommends that all three series of high alumina low cement castables can be effectively used in conditions that require good thermal stability.

AB - Potential non-toxic pink and red ceramic pigments based on CeO2 were successfully synthesized by selfpropagating room temperaturemethod and thermally treated at 600, 900 and 1200°C for 15min. The structure, morphology and optical properties, as well as thermal stability of Ce1-xErxO2-δ and Ce1-xPrxO2-δ(x = 0.05) were examined. Single-phase composition of all obtained CeO2 pigments was confirmed using XRPD method and Raman spectroscopy and it was not dependent on temperature. The mechanism of structural behaviour was thoroughly examined using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Nanometric dimensions of the crystallites of all pigments were confirmed using XRPD, TEM and FE-SEM analysis. Colour properties were dependent on the temperature treatment, and their position in the chromaticity diagram was studied using UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Colour efficiency measurements were supplemented by colorimetric analysis. It is proved that all samples are thermally stable in the investigated temperature range (up to 1200°C), and their potential application as environmentally friendly pigments of desired colour is confirmed.

AB - The quantities of component materials used for production of concrete are high on the
global scale, therefore alternative materials are experimented on, in order to replace the
natural ones. The possibility of using ground waste sulfur from the oil refining (petroleum)
industry as a filling component of self-compacting concrete is presented in the paper, based
on common concrete laboratory tests. The physical and mechanical properties of selfcompacting
concrete decrease to some extend due to use of ground sulfur, but this concrete
remains useful for some building applications.

AB - Mainly due to the strict global environmental regulations regarding the oil and gas
refining processes, which limit the maximum quantity of sulfur in combustibles, the
availability of waste sulfur has been considerably growing during the last decades and it is
evident that there will be a continuous abundant supply of waste sulfur in the future. Finding
new ways for waste sulfur consumption thus becomes very important. In this research,
possibility of using waste sulfur as a binding agent in concrete was analyzed and the
properties of the obtained sulfur polymer concrete in aggressive environments were examined
using destructive and non-destructive testing methods. Compressive strength changes were
insignificant. Ultrasonic measurements indicated significant homogeneity changes and slight
internal degradation. Based on the obtained results, the material with satisfying quality for
possible application in corrosive environment was produced.

AB - Self-compacting concrete (SCC) typically contains a certain content of very fine mineral fillers such as limestone powder. The idea of this study was to partially replace limestone with elemental waste sulfur since it is hydrophobic, insoluble in water and therefore chemically inert in concrete mixtures. Properties of conventional SCC with limestone and several compositions with different sulfur content were compared. Hardened concrete was tested for compressive, flexural, and adhesion strengths, dynamic elasticity modulus, specific electrical resistance, density, microstructure, and infra-red thermography. Results showed a slight decline in compressive, flexural, and adhesion strengths as well as in dynamic elasticity modulus. Specific electrical resistance and density were higher for samples with sulfur. SEM analysis indicated a slight porosity increase for the sample with sulfur. Infrared thermography was applied as a fast method for detecting internal deformations. Having in mind that all properties should remain or improve in case of waste valorization and the criteria should be set to satisfy requirements for SCC, this study proved that all mixtures can be used for certain structural applications.

AB - Using domestic zeolite from Igroš as row material for ceramic samples for application in condition of cavitation erosion. Samples based on talc with 15 % of zeolite, from Igroš, sintered at 1200oC were used in this investigation. The ultrasonic vibratory cavitation set up with stacionary specimen was used. Mass loss was measured and degradation level of the samples using image analysis and Young modulus of elasticity. Obtained results showed good resistance of the sample to the cavitation erosion, which give the possibility for possible future application of ceramic samples based on talc and yeolite in different conditions where cavitation erosion is expected.

AB - In this study the resistance of cordierite and zircon to the cavitation erosion was investigated with the aim of possible spreading their application. Cavitation erosion test was applied using standard ultrasonic vibratory set up with stationary sample. Weight loss and image analysis measurements including morphological analysis of the formed pits were used for monitoring degradation during the cavitation erosion testing. The obtained results were discussed in order to compare and analyze degradation mechanism and the resistance of the investigated materials to cavitation erosion. Cordierite sample underwent less serious degradation, characterized by continual forming of new pits, while zircon degradation progressed by growth and merging of already formed pits.

AB - Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (CONPs) are interesting biomaterials with various applications in biomedicine, cosmetics and the pharmaceutical industry, but with limited practical application because of their low stability in aqueous media. The aim of this study was to obtain CONPs with increased stability by coating the particles. Microbial exopolysaccharides (levan, pullulan) and glucose were used to prepare CONPs under different synthesis conditions. Coating was attempted by adding the carbohydrates during (direct coating) or after (subsequent coating) the synthesis of CONPs. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by X-Ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The suspension stability of the uncoated and coated CONPs in aqueous media was evaluated by measuring the hydrodynamic size, zeta potential and turbidity. The FT-IR spectra revealed the differences between coated CONPs and showed the success of subsequent coating with carbohydrates. Coating with carbohydrates improved the stability the CONP suspension by decreasing the size of aggregated particles. The suspensions of levan- and glucose-coated CONPs had the best stability. In this study, CONPs were prepared using non-toxic materials, which were completely environmentally friendly. The obtained results open new horizons for CONP synthesis, improving their biological applications.

AB - The paper presents a brief overview of contemporary ELION techniques with stress on their use for material modification and dozimetry. In the attempt to avoid some common misjudges of irradiation effects, special attention is paid to exact definition of irradiation geometry and careful adjustment of dose rates, which en able a proper elaboration of experimental results. In particular, effects of γ -rays irradiation on properties of commercial optical fibres, splitters, connectors, and fibre joints are examined, which enables monitoring of irradiation effects in complex configurations made of materials with different radiation hardness (resistance). It has been established that γ -rays irradiation of the investigated elements influences, in different ways, the transmission of laser beam signals of various wavelengths, under different modulation regimes. After irradiation, the signal attenuation is noticeably larger, both in optical connectors and optical splitter, than be fore it, and the effect in creases in time. The effects are more pronounced at the 99 % than at the 1 % Y-splitter out put at both measured wave lengths, and are more pronounced at 1310 nm than at 1550 nm.

AB - This study is focused on monitoring the degradation level of zircon based ceramic materials during exposure to cavitation. In addition to conventional degradation monitoring methods, weight loss measuring, the emphasis is on monitoring the changes occurring at the surface of the sample by taking the photos and analyzing of these images. In this paper, several parameters are monitored by image analysis: the level of surface degradation, the number of pits, and the average area of the pits. This method proved to be very fast and useful for a quantification of damage which could improve the prediction of the material lifetime.

AB - Cavitation erosion of mullite samples was monitored using vibratory cavitation set up with stationary sample. The level of degradation of the sample was monitored using weight loss and image analysis. Thermal imaging analysis was focused on determination of temperature line profile and histogram of temperature distribution at the end of the experiment. The results of image analysis were compared with infrared thermography results.

AB - Mechanical shock of zircon based ceramic induced by cavitation erosion testing was investigated in this study. Several parameters were followed in order to determine level of material degradation during the cavitation erosion testing. Mass loss was taken as a conventional criterion for material degradation, while the level of surface degradation was evaluated by image and thermal imaging analyses. Results show high cavitation resistance of zircon ceramics and their suitability when vigorous cavitation erosion environment is expected.
