AB  - Metals and metal oxides have subpar antibacterial activities compared to those of small-molecule antibiotics, yet there are hopes that with proper compositional and structural adjustments this gap might be bridged. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were mechanically activated and combined with particulate silver through simple reduction process elicited by UV irradiation and assisted with the ultrasound. The resulting powders in various combinations (Ag vs. no Ag, activated vs. non-activated) were characterized using a range of experimental techniques and assessed for their antibacterial activities. The preparation procedure presented in this work prevails over the disadvantages of many chemical routes, most critically by avoiding the use of toxic substances. The mechanical activation did not reduce the particle size or crystallinity of TiO2 nor did it consistently alter the bandgap, yet it enabled the doubling of the amount of silver incorporable into the material. Further, while both mechanical activation and the addition of silver in the amount not exceeding 0.5 wt% produced barely detectable structural changes in the material, they both augmented its antibacterial activity. The precursor TiO2 powder produced no inhibition zone against any of the four bacterial species tested, while the mechanical activation of TiO2 led to the formation of distinct inhibition zones against each of the four bacterial species tested. The addition of silver to activated TiO2 further widened the inhibition zones and it also imparted the antibacterial activity to non-activated TiO2. The boost in the antibacterial activity achieved by the short mechanical activation was of a similar magnitude as the boost obtained after the addition of silver. The antibacterial activity was not different for different species when no silver was added to the system. However, with the addition of silver, species selectivity was obtained, as the composites were more effective against the two Gram-negative species (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) than against the two Gram-positive ones (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis). The antibacterial activity increased with the addition of silver in the broth assay, but it was mediocre compared to that detected in the agar assay, attesting to the poor dispersability of the powders and their best performance when the bacterial cells migrate to the composite surface than vice versa. The findings of this study give hope that with appropriate microstructural or compositional alterations, the antibacterial activity of metal oxide powders and inorganic materials in general can be made comparable to that of small-molecule antibiotics.

AB  - This paper shows a simple way to synthesize a series of Ce1-xSrxPO4 ceramic materials using acetate solutions of Ce and Sr instead of nitrate which were used so far. For synthesis, the preparation method was used by simple mixing of acetate solutions of Ceand Sr(, with NaH2PO4 at room temperature, and the studied compositions were Ce1-xSrxPO4 (where x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5). The disintegration of Sr in monazite structures in different sintering temperature ranges from 600°C to 1000°C was investigated. The X-ray diffraction was used to track the evolution of the phase composition with thermal treatment. The morphology of sintered ceramics was obtained by scanning electron microscopy and vibrational bands of selected spectra were observed using the FT-IR method. Relative geometric density of selected samples was evaluated. The most favorable conditions for obtaining high-temperature Ce, Sr phosphate-based ceramic material are reported.
AB  - У овом раду је приказан једноставан начин да се синтетише серија Ce1-xSrxPO4 керамичких материјала коришћењем ацетатних раствора Ce и Sr уместо до сада коришћених нитрата. За синтезу је коришћен метод припреме једноставним мешањем раствора Ce(C2H3O2)3·xH2O), Sr(C2H3O2)2, и NaH2PO4 као прекурсора на собној температури, а испитивани састави су Ce1-xSrxPO4 (где је к = 0 , 0,1, 0,2, 0,3, 0,4, 0,5). Испитивана је дезинтеграција Sr у структурама моназита у различитим температурним распонима синтеровања од 600 °C до 1000 °C. Дифракција рендгенских зрака на праху (XRD) је коришћена за праћење еволуције фазног састава синтетисаних и синтерованих узорака. Морфологија синтероване керамике испитивана је скенирајућом електронском микроскопијом (СЕМ), а вибрациое траке одабраних спектра су испитане ФТИР методом. Згушњавање и еволуција микроструктуре су одређене коришћењем релативне геометријске густине одабраних узорака. Приказани су најповољнији услови за добијање високотемпературног керамичког материјала на бази Ce, Sr фосфата.

AB  - Polimerne smole na bazi akrilata dobijene iz Bis-GMA (Bisfenol A glicidmetakrilat), koji je pogodan za
fotopolimerizaciju, koriste se u stomatologiji za različite namene zbog lakoće nanošenja i mogućnosti
da se utiče na njihova svojstva dodavanjem ojačanja različitog oblika i hemijskog sastava. Sintetisano
je ojačanje u formi čestica na bazi dvostrukih slojevitih hidroksida magnezijuma i aluminijuma (MgAlLDH- Layered Double Hidroxides) nataloženih na silicijum dioksidu dobijenom iz ljuski pirinča. Kao
podloge korišćene su metalna legura na bazi hroma i molibdena za primenu u stomatologiji i staklo u
formi podloga za mikroskopske preparate. Adhezivna svojstva kompozita su bitna sa aspekta njihove
primene. Adhezivna svojstva materijala su određena na osnovu merenja mikrotvrdoće kompozita i to
primenom različitih opterećenja kako bi se procenio parametar adhezije koji pokazuje uticaj prevlake
na podlogu. Upoređeno je kako se vezuje čista matrica od fotopolimerizujućeg akrilata sa podlogom od
stomatološke legure sa vezivanjem za staklenu podlogu. Potom je upoređeno kako se vezuju kompozitni
materijali na obe podloge. Adhezija je određena i na osnovu promene ugla kvašenja između kompozita
i rezultati su upoređeni sa rezultatima mikroindentacije. Pokazalo se da dodatak kompozitnih čestica
kao ojačanja u matricu od akrilata povećava adhezivna svojstva kompozita u odnosu na čistu matricu i

AB  - Polymer resins based on acrylates obtained from Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycide methacrylate), which is suitable for photopolymerization, are used in dentistry for various purposes due to the ease of application and the possibility to influence their properties by adding reinforcements of different shapes, crystal structure and chemical compositions. Reinforcement in the form of particles based on MgAlLDH (layered double hydroxide) deposited on silica obtained from rice husks on two substrates. A metal base and glass were used. The adhesive properties are important in order to see the possibility of using these materials in applications. In order to measure the adhesive properties of the material, the composite microhardness measurement method is used by applying different loads in order to evaluate the adhesion parameter that shows the effect of the coating on the substrate. It was compared to how a pure photopolymerizing acrylate matrix bonds with a chromium-based dental alloy substrate that is used in the production of different parts of dentures by bonding to a glass substrate. Then, it was compared how composite materials are bonded to both substrates. Adhesion was monitored through the change in wetting angle between the composites, and the results were compared with the results of microindentation. It was shown that the addition of composite particles increases the adhesive properties of the composite compared to the pure matrix and that better adhesion is achieved between the composite and the metal substrate than between the composite and the glass substrate.

AB  - The MgAl-LDH@SiO2 particles are prepared by the coprecipitation of LDH on silica originating from plants.
Particles are of submicron size and are well dispersed in the matrix. Composites consisting of PMMA reinforced
with MgAl-LDH@SiO2 particles have improved hardness and resistance to viscoelastic deformation, as tested by
microhardness measurements.

AB  - Polymer composites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and reinforced with particles based on unmodified/modified
plant provenance biosilica particles were synthesized and characterized. An unsaturated polyester resin was obtained from
waste poly (ethylene terephthalate (PET). Biosilaca particles are made from rice husk biomass. The surface of the produced
silica particles was modified using three different silanes: 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (MEMO), trimethoxyvinylsilane (TMEVS), and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). The microhardness test method was used to investigate
the mechanical properties of synthesized composite material with variations in dwell times and applied loads. Optimization of
composite microhardness value prediction in function of synthesized parameters (type of modification of silica particles) and
measurement parameters (applied loads and dwell times) was done using the method of response surface methodology (RSM)
regression analysis. The maximal microhardness values (0.459 GPa) were obtained of type modification of silica particles with
vinyl with 80% confidence for 120 experimental variables. This method can be used to choose the optimal dwell time and load
for comparison of measurements between different composite materials and to enable the choice of the material in terms of
optimization of the quality of reinforcement and quality of interphase determined by surface modification.

AB  - Reuse and/or recycling of spent adsorbents is taking a central role in modern thinking and catalyzed carbonization is the way forward. Herein we explore the carbonization of adsorbed acetamiprid, in an inert atmosphere, as a way of recycling and producing nitrogen-rich carbon material for potential use in supercapacitors. Added value material and the reuse of the adsorbent were achieved by carbonization at 700 °C under argon. The formation of a nitrogen-doped carbon layer as an active material on the adsorbent, bonded through a C-Si linkage, has been conclusively verified through elemental composition quantification using XPS and EDX measurements. Two-stage catalytic decomposition and condensation of the adsorbed pesticide is followed by TGA and TPD-MS. Attained carbon-based materials give stable Faradaic capacitance with a slight dependency on the number of adsorbing cycles. Capacitance calculated with respect to the adlayer carbon material reaches values as high as 610 F g−1. Galvanostatic Charge/Discharge measurement confirmed the stability of explored materials with a slight increase in capacitance over 1000 cycles. The presented results envisage electroactive materials preparation from environmental pollutants, adding value to spent adsorbents.

AB  - While dental poly methyl methacrylate(PMMA) possesses distinctive qualities such as ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and favorable physical and mechanical properties, these attributes alone are inadequate to impart the necessary impact strength and hardness. Consequently, pure PMMA is less suitable for dental applications. This research focused on the incorporation of Strontium titanate (SrTiO3-STO) and hybrid filler STO/Manganese oxide (MnO2) to improve impact resistance and hardness. The potential of STO in reinforcing PMMA is poorly investigated, while hybrid filler STO/MnO2 has not been presented yet. Differential scanning calorimetry is conducted in order to investigate the agglomeration influence on the PMMA glass transition temperature (Tg), as well as the leaching of residual monomer and volatile additives that could pose a threat to human health. It has been determined that agglomeration with 1 wt% loading had no influence on Tg, while the first scan revealed differences in evaporation of small molecules, in favor of composite PMMA-STO/MnO2, which showed the trapping potential of volatiles. Investigations of mechanical properties have revealed the significant influence of hybrid STO/MnO2 filler on microhardness and total absorbed impact energy, which were increased by 89.9% and 145.4%, respectively. Results presented in this study revealed the reinforcing potential of hybrid nanoparticles that could find application in other polymers as well.

AB  - We have synthesized 22 C-1 functionalized-N-aryl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives showing biological activities towards cholinergic enzymes. Synthesis was performed using visible-light-promoted photo-redox chemistry, starting from a common intermediate, and the application of this synthetic methodology drastically simplified synthetic routes and purification of desired compounds. All synthesized derivates were divided into four groups based on the substituents in the C-1 position, and their inhibition potencies towards two cholinergic enzymes, acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase were evaluated. Most potent derivatives were selected, and kinetic analysis was further carried out to obtain insights into the mechanisms of inhibition of these two enzymes. Further validation of the mode of inhibition of cholinergic enzymes by the two most potent THIQ compounds, 3c and 3i, was performed using fluorescence-quenching titration studies. Molecular docking studies further confirmed the proposed mechanism of enzymes’ inhibition. In silico predictions of physicochemical properties, pharmacokinetics, drug-likeness, and medicinal chemistry friendliness of the selected most potent derivatives were performed using Swiss ADME tool. This was followed by UPLC-assisted log P determination and in vitro BBB permeability studies performed in order to assess the potential of the synthesized compounds to pass the BBB.

Blue-light-driven photoactivity of L-cysteine-modified graphene quantum dots and their antibacterial effects

AB  - The widespread abuse of traditional antibiotics has led to a global rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which give in return unprecedented health risks. Therefore, there is a large and urgent need for the development of new, smart antibacterial agents able to efficiently kill or inhibit bacterial growth. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial activity of S, N-doped Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) as a light-triggered antibacterial agent. Gamma irradiation was employed as a tool to achieve one-step modification of GQDs in the presence of L-cysteine amino acid as a source of heteroatoms. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), nuclear magnetic 
resonance (NMR), and zeta potential measurements provided the necessary data to clarify the structure of modified dots and verify the introduction of both S- and N-atoms in GQDs structure, but also severe changes in the aromatic, sp2 domains. Namely, γ-irradiation caused a bonding of S atoms in 1.14 at.% mainly as thiol groups, and N in 1.81 at.% as amino groups, but sp2 contribution in GQD structure was lowered from 63.00 to 4.86 at.%, as measured in dots irradiated at a dose of 200 kGy. Fluorescence quenching measurements showed that L-cysteine-modified dots are able to bind to human serum albumin. The antibacterial activity of GQDs 
combined with 1 and 6 h of blue light (470 nm) irradiation was tested against 8 bacterial strains. GQD-cys-25 sample provided the best results, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) as low as 125 μg/mL against S. aureus, E. faecalis, and E. coli after only 1 h of blue light exposure.

abstract = "The widespread abuse of traditional antibiotics has led to a global rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which give in return unprecedented health risks. Therefore, there is a large and urgent need for the development of new, smart antibacterial agents able to efficiently kill or inhibit bacterial growth. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial activity of S, N-doped Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) as a light-triggered antibacterial agent. Gamma irradiation was employed as a tool to achieve one-step modification of GQDs in the presence of L-cysteine amino acid as a source of heteroatoms. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), nuclear magnetic 
resonance (NMR), and zeta potential measurements provided the necessary data to clarify the structure of modified dots and verify the introduction of both S- and N-atoms in GQDs structure, but also severe changes in the aromatic, sp2 domains. Namely, γ-irradiation caused a bonding of S atoms in 1.14 at.% mainly as thiol groups, and N in 1.81 at.% as amino groups, but sp2 contribution in GQD structure was lowered from 63.00 to 4.86 at.%, as measured in dots irradiated at a dose of 200 kGy. Fluorescence quenching measurements showed that L-cysteine-modified dots are able to bind to human serum albumin. The antibacterial activity of GQDs 
combined with 1 and 6 h of blue light (470 nm) irradiation was tested against 8 bacterial strains. GQD-cys-25 sample provided the best results, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) as low as 125 μg/mL against S. aureus, E. faecalis, and E. coli after only 1 h of blue light exposure.",

AB  - In this study, levan from Bacillus licheniformis NS032 was modified in an aqueous medium by octenyl succinic
anhydride (OSA), and the properties of the obtained derivatives were studied. The maximum efficiency in the
synthesis reaction was achieved at 40 ◦C and a polysaccharide slurry concentration of 30 %. Increasing the
reagent concentration (2–10 %) led to an increase in the degree of substitution (0.016–0.048). Structures of
derivatives were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic
light scattering analyses showed that the derivatives with degrees of substitution of 0.025 and 0.036 retained
levan’s porous structure and thermostability and showed better colloidal stability than the native polysaccharide.
The intrinsic viscosity of derivatives increased upon modification, while the surface tension of the 1 % solution
was lowered to 61 mN/m. Oil-in-water emulsions prepared with sunflower oil (10 % and 20 %) by mechanical
homogenization and 2 and 10 % derivatives in the continuous phase showed mean oil droplet sizes of 106–195
μm, while the distribution curves exhibited bimodal character. The studied derivatives have a good capacity to
stabilize emulsions, as they have a creaming index ranging from 73 % to 94 %. The OSA-modified levans could
have potential applications in new formulations of emulsion-based systems.

Self-Heating Flower-like Nanoconstructs with Limited Incorporation of Yttrium in Maghemite: Effect of Chemical Composition on Heating Efficiency, Cytotoxicity and Genotoxicity

AB  - Partial cation substitution can significantly change the physical properties of parent compounds. By controlling the chemical composition and knowing the mutual relationship between composition and physical properties, it is possible to tailor the properties of materials to those that are superior for desired technological application. Using the polyol synthesis procedure, a series of yttrium-substituted iron oxide nanoconstructs, γ-Fe2−xYxO3 (YIONs), was prepared. It was found that Y3+ could substitute Fe3+ in the crystal structures of maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) up to a limited concentration of ~1.5% (γ-Fe1.969Y0.031O3). Analysis of TEM micrographs showed that crystallites or particles were aggregated in flower-like structures with diameters from 53.7 ± 6.2 nm to 97.3 ± 37.0 nm, depending on yttrium concentration. To be investigated for potential applications as magnetic hyperthermia agents, YIONs were tested twice: their heating efficiency was tested and their toxicity was investigated. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values were in the range of 32.6 W/g to 513 W/g and significantly decreased with increased yttrium concentration in the samples. Intrinsic loss power (ILP) for γ-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe1.995Y0.005O3 were ~8–9 nH·m2/Kg, which pointed to their excellent heating efficiency. IC50 values of investigated samples against cancer (HeLa) and normal (MRC-5) cells decreased with increased yttrium concentration and were higher than ~300 μg/mL. The samples of γ-Fe2−xYxO3 did not show a genotoxic effect. The results of toxicity studies show that YIONs are suitable for further in vitro/in vivo studies toward to their potential medical applications, while results of heat generation point to their potential use in magnetic hyperthermia cancer treatment or use as self-heating systems for other technological applications such as catalysis.

AB  - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB  - To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepared powders as well as sintered ceramics were thoroughly examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300 °C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic.
AB  - У циљу испитивања утицаја методе синтезе као и температуре синтеровања на функционална својства керамике перовскитно/спинелне структуре, синтетисани су BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 композити методама термалне декомпозиције, копреципитације и микроемулзије, а затим синтеровани на 1150 °C и 1300 °C. Фазни састав и морфологија синтетисаних узорака детаљно су испитани пре и после синтеровања помоћу рендгенске дифракције на праху (XRPD) и скенирајуће електронске микроскпије (SEM) спрегнуте са елекрон дисперзивном спектроскопијом (EDS). Изведена су опсежна испитивања како диелектричних, тако и фероелектричних својстава датих композита. У већини случајева узорци синтеровани на 1300 °C показали су боља својства од узорака синтерованих на 1150 °C. Композит синтетисан методом термалне декомпозиције и синтерован на 1300 °C издваја се од осталих синтетисаних BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 узорака захваљујући великој стабилносту у широком фреквентном опсегу и малим струјама цурења. Добијени резултати недвосмислено указују да истакнути композит може бити успешно примењен као функционални мултифероик.

The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300 °C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic., У циљу испитивања утицаја методе синтезе као и температуре синтеровања на функционална својства керамике перовскитно/спинелне структуре, синтетисани су BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 композити методама термалне декомпозиције, копреципитације и микроемулзије, а затим синтеровани на 1150 °C и 1300 °C. Фазни састав и морфологија синтетисаних узорака детаљно су испитани пре и после синтеровања помоћу рендгенске дифракције на праху (XRPD) и скенирајуће електронске микроскпије (SEM) спрегнуте са елекрон дисперзивном спектроскопијом (EDS). Изведена су опсежна испитивања како диелектричних, тако и фероелектричних својстава датих композита. У већини случајева узорци синтеровани на 1300 °C показали су боља својства од узорака синтерованих на 1150 °C. Композит синтетисан методом термалне декомпозиције и синтерован на 1300 °C издваја се од осталих синтетисаних BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 узорака захваљујући великој стабилносту у широком фреквентном опсегу и малим струјама цурења. Добијени резултати недвосмислено указују да истакнути композит може бити успешно примењен као функционални мултифероик.",

AB  - Radiation shielding is a crucial precautionary measure in decreasing the dose of exposure medical personnel experience. The physical dimensions of these shields, specifically thickness and shape, are dependent on the type of radiation, energy and specific radioactivity. Currently, the most common radiation shielding equipment is made of lead, tungsten or uranium. Although these heavy metals have favorable shielding properties against ionizing radiation, protective garments such as lead aprons are heavy to wear and can pose significant health risks. Taking this into account, the primary goal of this study is to understand the radiation shielding properties of lead-free polymer geopolymer-polyurethane based composites. The geopolymer was synthesized using an 80%-20% mixture of fly ash and a bio-polyol substrate which was subsequently homogenized using MDI44. As a result, 6 samples of the geopolymer-polyurethane based composites were fabricated of which 5 were 90%-10% compositions between the mixture and varying concentrations of BaSO4 and Bi2O3 respectively. The last sample consisted of the pure fly ash/bio-polyol mixture. XRF and ICP analysis was used to chemically characterize the fly ash. The composite structures were analyzed using XRD, while the microstructural morphology was investigated using SEM techniques. Utilizing an energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDS), elemental abundance and agglomerating behavior was analyzed for each composite variant. The X-ray attenuation measurements pointed out that the obtained composites have the potential for a design of lead-free protective clothing against X-ray shielding in medical applications.

AB  - Acrylate polymers are used in several applications such as dentistry, medicine,
and industry. The modification of their properties using the reinforcement is
of key importance for the possible applications. Layered double hydroxides are
materials that are easily synthesized by several techniques giving the possibility to modulate the chemical composition and morphology of the reinforcement and they consist of a divalent and a trivalent anion hydroxide and the
layers can be exfoliated and thus provide a material interesting for composite
reinforcement. In this paper, Mn was used as a divalent and Al as a trivalent
cation. The obtained particles were used as reinforcement for the preparation
of composites in 1, 3, and 5 wt% quantities and prepared samples were compared to the matrix consisting of PMMA. Physical mechanical properties of the
sample having the best mechanical properties (with 3 wt% of MnAl-LDH
filers) exhibited 6.38% modulus of elasticity, 27% hardness, and 10% tensile
strength improved values compared to the clear PMMA matrix. Toughness
was lowered in this sort of composite compared to the pure matrix.

AB  - Population growth, the development of agriculture, industry, and mining, caused the creation of an increasing amount of  wastewater. Due to the discharge of wastewater, without prior treatment, the quality of water resources is impaired.  Polluting substances, such as pesticides, have a negative impact on human health and the environment. Heavy pollution  of both surface and underground water is one of the biggest problems associated with the use of pesticides. They reach  human organisms indirectly via agricultural products. Most pesticides are more or less toxic, some of them are highly  soluble in water. In recent years, special attention has been paid to the development of methods for the treatment of  wastewater contaminated with pesticide residues, in order to partially reduce or eliminate their further impact on humans,  plants, and the environment. Among many processes, the photocatalytic degradation process has proven to be a very  effective process for the removal of pesticides from wastewater. Photocatalytic degradation implies the breakdown of  various types of toxic organic substances into simpler molecules, such as ions, water, etc.  In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of the pesticide mesotrione (MS) using ZnO photocatalyst is presented. The  degradation of the pesticide compound was studied using Shimadzu 1800 analytical UV-VIS spectroscopy. As a  replacement for UVC radiation, a solar-imitated irradiation Ultra Vitalux (UV) lamp (300W) was used. Degradation  kinetics follows pseudo-first order. After 240 minutes, the MS was completely degraded.

AB  - Electrochemically deposited nickel coatings from
sulfamate baths without/with lab-made biosilica (SiO2) particles on
the Si(100) substrate were produced. Different galvanostatic
regimes were used: direct current (DC), pulse current (PC), and
pulse-reverse current (PRC) regimes. The phase structure of the
synthesized silica nanoparticles from rice husks was obtained using
XRD and FE-SEM. The MMC-Ni/SiO2 and free Ni coatings were
characterized using FE-SEM, AFM, the micro indentation Vickers
technique, and the drop sessile method in order to investigate
structure, roughness, microhardness, and wettability. The optimal
deposition parameters were obtained with an emphasis on their
potential application as micro mounting coatings.

AB  - In this study, different forms of copper films were
electrodeposited (ED) on silicon wafer, copper and brass foils.
The effect of monocrystalline Si(111) surface cleaning method
and electrodeposition conditions and regimes (frequency in the
pulsating current (PC) regime, an addition of additives in
electrolyte for the constant galvanostatic (DC) regime, and
thickness) on surface morphology and wettability of copper films
was investigated. Optical microscopy equipped with highresolution camera, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an
atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used for thin film
characterization and to evaluate wettability of copper films. The
sessile drop method was used for the measurement of water
contact angle. According to the obtained results, choice of
electrolyte used in ED greatly affects wettability of copper films.
It was also shown that copper films electrodeposited from basic
sulfate electrolyte with varying current regimes frequencies,
thicknesses, and cathode types have opposite trends between
roughness parameter values and the water contact angle value.
Structural-morphological changes of a film or bulk solid surface
are key parameters in determining wettability properties and the
analysis of the wetting angle oscillations, but not the only one.

AB  - Copper from sulfate baths without and with added inorganic pigment particles based on strontium aluminate doped with europium and dysprosium (SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+) was electrodeposited on a brass cathode by a galvanostatic regime. Morphological, structural, and roughness analysis of the pigment particles, the pure (pigment-free) Cu coating, and the Cu coatings with incorporated pigment particles were performed using SEM, XRD, and AFM techniques, respectively. Hardness and creep resistance were considered for the examination of the mechanical properties of the Cu coatings, applying Chicot–Lesage (for hardness) and Sargent–Ashby (for creep resistance) mathematical models. The wettability of the Cu coatings was examined by the static sessile drop method by a measurement of the water contact angle. The incorporation of pigment particles in the Cu deposits did not significantly affect the morphology or texture of the coatings, while the roughness of the deposits rose with the rise in pigment particle concentrations. The hardness of the Cu coatings also increased with the increasing concentration of pigments and was greater than that obtained for the pigment-free Cu coating. The presence of the pigments caused a change in the wettability of the Cu coatings from hydrophilic (for the pigment-free Cu coating) to hydrophobic (for Cu coatings with incorporated particles) surface areas.

AB  - The aim of the article is to show the effects of the main air plasma gasifier operating parameters, such as temperature and equivalence ratio on the gasification performance of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants. The parametric study was performed using a one-dimensional mathematical model to determine the equilibrium composition of the system. The model is based on the principle of the minimum of the Gibbs function and uses only the ultimate and proximate analysis data as input to the model. The output of the model gives the equilibrium composition of the gasses produced. The parametric analysis was performed in order to determine the optimal operating parameters of the plasma reactor in order to obtain syngas with the highest heat value while achieving the maximum efficiency of the process. The collected results can be useful in further analysis of the gasification processes in plasma reactor, such as exergy analysis and kinetics.

Characterization and photocatalytic application of SrGd2O4 doped with rare earth Sm3+ and Dy3+ ions

AB  - A set of samples of SrGd2O4 doped with Sm3+ and Dy3+with different concentrations was prepared via glycine-assisted combustion synthesis. All of the diffraction peaks are related to the pure orthorhombic lattice SrGd2O4, according to X-ray Powder Diffraction investigation. The Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy chemical characterization revealed that the structure included all desired elements. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy was used to capture the morphology, which showed porous aggregated particles consisting of roughly 50 nm-sized spherical particles. The Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry was used to establish where voids originated, and the results showed that samples have a real permanent 3D pore structure. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy verified the successful incorporation of Dy3+ and Sm3+ ions in the matrix. Down-conversion luminescence spectra were recorded and typical emission transitions were found for either Sm3+ (4G5/2→6H5/2, 4G5/2→6H7/2, 4G5/2→6H9/2) or Dy3+ (4F9/2→6H15/2 and 4F9/2→6H13/2) ions. Calculation of the energy band gap using UV-VIS Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy yielded values of 4.3 eV for both doped samples. Using UV-VIS Absorption Spectroscopy, the photocatalytic degradation process was observed. After 4 h of simulating Sun exposure, an analysis of the photocatalytic properties revealed that approximately 50% of the Rhodamine B had been mineralized.

In pursuit of the ultimate pollen substitute (insect larvae) for honey bee (Apis mellifera) feed

AB  - Finding a pollen substitute for honey bees that is nutritionally adequate and affordable is a scientific and practical challenge. We attempted a new rational approach and tried to exploit honey bees’ natural cannibalistic behavior. We tested processed insect larvae as a food source that is nutritionally similar to bee brood, and which can easily be produced on a large scale. In cage experiments, monitoring bee mortality, food consumption and changes in bee body parts’ weights showed that flour obtained by grinding dried yellow mealworm larvae has the potential to become an excellent component for pollen substitution. Bees from the cage group fed Tenebrio molitor patties (TG) demonstrated overall best results in comparison to sugar patties fed bee group (CG), yeast patties fed bee group (YG) and pollen patties fed bee group (PG). They did not lose weight as rapidly as the CG, did not defecate inside cages as the YG, nor show increased mortality as the PG. At the same time, TG consumed less food (mean 13.7 g/cage) than CG (16.8 g/cage), YG (20.4 g/cage) and PG (23.9 g/cage) within the period of 28 days. Bees’ gut increase in weight was lowest in the CG, followed by TG and PG and was the highest in the YG which resulted in diarrhea after 14 days. Bees from TG did not lag behind other bees in head, thorax and abdomen weight after 28 days. We demonstrated that processed yellow mealworm larvae (T. molitor) can be used as an ingredient for honey bee feed.

AB  - When textile dyes are released into the water, they can have a range of negative effects on the environment, for example, azo dyes can break down into carcinogenic compounds when exposed to sunlight. Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) and Reactive Black 5 (RB5) are reactive dyes. Unfortunately, the discharge of untreated effluents from these industries into nature can result in the contamination of water, which can have harmful effects on the environment.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae is widely used in different fields of biotechnology. In this work, the cell walls of used yeast were reused for the biosorption of textile dyes, and the possibility of their utilization in wastewater treatment was investigated. The response surface methodology approach was applied to determine the optimal levels of three input variables - pH, temperature, and time, and also to identify the relationship between the response functions and process variables. Five levels of three variables were used, pH range 2–13, temperature range 15–40°C and time 0.15–30 h. The decolorization processes were optimized using the Central Composite Design. A significant impact of pH and temperature
was found, while satisfactory results in decolorization (≥ 90%) were shown in a short time (up to 1 h). The maximum adsorption capacity (MAC) of the used Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell wall for removing RBBR and RB5 from wastewater was tested according to results obtained by CCD considering the economy of the process (pH 4, 25°C and 1 hour). Experimentally obtained MAC was 400 mg/g and 200 mg/g for RBBR and RB5, respectively.

AB  - Fish processing generates a large amount of waste products; nearly 75 % of the total fish weight consists of scales, skins, heads, viscera, and bones. These waste by-products are often dumped in landfills or the ocean, contributing to environmental pollution. Solid fish waste has a high collagen content and can be utilized for the extraction of different products such as gelatine, which can be used in different food and pharmaceutical industries. Fish gelatine contains all biogenic amino acids and can be used as a dietary supplement, thus increasing the utilization of fish waste and reducing environmental pollution.
Recently, a strong worldwide focus has been directed towards the discovery of new microbial proteases for industrial applications. For that purpose, the Bacillus sp. strains from the laboratory bank were screened for the ability to secrete alkaline proteases. Bacterial strains that produced a larger clear zone on the gelatine agar plate were selected for further study. Selected bacterial strains were cultivated under submerged conditions for the purpose of producing proteases. The supernatant from each isolate was used as a crude enzyme extract for testing gelatine proteolytic activity and hydrolysis products. Bacillus sp. strains 12B, 16A, 17B and 24B showed a high degree of hydrolysis of the gelatine waste and the ability to form proteins of small molecular masses after one hour of hydrolysis. Of these, sp. 12B was the most potent, having twice the proteolytic activity determined by the TNBS method.

AB  - Pectinases are a type of enzymes frequently used in the food industry to clarify, liquefy, and stabilize fruit juices. The main challenge in fruit juice production is the cloudiness of the juice, which is largely caused by the presence of pectic polysaccharides. Endo-pectinases are enzymes that hydrolyze the glycosidic bonds in pectic polymers. Commercial pectinolytic enzymes are typically produced by fungi, with Aspergillus spp. being the most commonly used.
The aim of this research was the production and characterization of a novel endo-pectinase from the Aspergillus tubingensis strain for use in liquefying and clarifying different types of fruit juice. To accomplish this, solid-state fermentation was conducted on agricultural waste, such as sugar beet pulp and wheat bran, to produce pectinolytic enzymes. The resulting crude extract was concentrated via ultrafiltration and used to isolate the endo-pectinase via ammonium sulfate and ethanol precipitation methods. Ion-exchange chromatography technique on DEAE Sephadex A-25 matrix was used for further purification of the endo-pectinase.
The purified enzyme was characterized by the determination of total pectinolytic activity, specific pectinolytic activity, and SDS-PAA gel electrophoresis. The activity of the endo-pectinase was confirmed by a diffusion test and zymography with Ruthenium Red visualization. The resulting enzyme was used to liquefy apricot, banana, apple, quince, strawberry, and orange pulp, with juice yields ranging from 71% to 83%, depending on the fruit used. The juices treated with endo-pectinase showed much higher clarification compared to untreated juices. Additionally, the treated juices demonstrated more pronounced antioxidant properties, as determined through the DPPH assay.
