Also, powder particles can have other morphological forms, such as flakes or needles, fibrous or spongy, and needle or cauliflower-like ones, and the shape of powder particles depends on the electrodeposition conditions and the nature of the metal.

AB - The electrochemical deposition of the Fe-Ni alloy powders from citrate-sulfate containing electrolytes of different Ni/Fe ions concentration ratios at pH 4.5 was examined by the polarization measurements. All polarization curves have a similar shape and are characterized by the presence of two inflection points. The first inflection point reflects the beginning of alloy deposition, while the second one (˜) corresponds to the moment when the cathode reaction becomes determined by the rate of hydrogen bubbles formation. The potentials of Fe-Ni alloys deposition at all investigated Ni/Fe ratios are more positive than those for pure metal powders deposition. As the Ni/Fe ratio decreases, the polarization curves are placed at slightly more positive potentials. The morphology of electrodeposited powder particles was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A common characteristic of all Fe-Ni alloy powders is the presence of cone shaped cavities. Powder particles electrodeposited at the ratio Ni/Fe = 9/1 are mainly consisted of nodules of either very flat surface or rough surface, with well defined crystals detected only on a few particles. With the decrease of the Ni/Fe ratio, the presence of well defined crystals on the nodule surface becomes more pronounced. In the powder with the highest amount of Fe (Ni/Fe = 1/3), the whole surface of all particles is covered with crystals of different shapes.

AB - The effects of codeposition of hydrogen on the structure of electrodeposited copper is discussed. The simultaneous hydrogen evolution and codeposition are more extensively studied in the cases of electrodeposition of chromium or iron group of metals and/or alloys. An increased hydrogen evolution during the electrodeposition of metals leads to noticeable changes in mass and heat transfer, limiting current density, and Ohmic resistance. Consequently, the simultaneous hydrogen evolution significantly influences the surface morphology of the deposited copper, thus leading to the formation of open porous structure with extremely high surface area. The honeycomb-like or other different features of the surface morphology, as well as various shapes of electrochemically prepared powders, are correlated to the amount of simultaneously evolved hydrogen during the electrodeposition process. From a practical point of view, due to extremely high surface
area, materials prepared in this way can be technologically very useful for applications as electrodes in fuel cells, batteries, or sensors.

AB - The effect different deposition regimes (constant and reversing currents), on the powdered copper electrodeposits morphology were investigated. The results obtained in constant regimes were compared with those obtained in reversing regimes. The morphology of electrodeposited copper powder were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effect of the current amplitude, cathodic-to-anodic time ratio and period of the current wave are discussed. It is shown that the parameters determining the reversing current wave determine the micromorphology of the copper powder particles deposited. On the other side, technological properties of powders depend on their granulometry and particle morphology. Very often one method is inadequate for characterization of the morphology of powder particles. This paper also studied different methods for clear describing of the copper powder granulometry and morphology.

AB - Electrodeposition of copper by pulsating overpotential (PO) regime in the range of hydrogen co-deposition was examined by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the increase of the pause-to-pulse ratio produced a strong effect on the morphology of electrodeposited copper. Honeycomb-like copper structures were formed with the pause-to-pulse ratios up to 5. Up to this value of the pause-to-pulse ratio, the diameter of the holes formed by attached hydrogen bubbles was decreasing, while their number was increasing by the application of PO regime. The compactness of the formed honeycomb-like structures was also increasing with the increasing pause duration. The increase of the pause-to-pulse ratio suppressed a coalescence of neighboring hydrogen bubbles. Copper dendrites in the interior of the holes and at their shoulders were formed with the higher pause-to-pulse ratios. The size of the formed dendrites, as well as their number, increased with the increasing pause duration. Depth of holes was decreasing with the increasing pause duration. The increased compactness of the obtained structures was explained by the use of a set of equations describing the effect of square-wave PO on electrodeposition process.

AB - Polarization characteristics of the electrodeposition processes of Fe powders from different citrate electrolytes and the morphology of the obtained powders were investigated. The effect of complexing agents on the cathodic polarization, the current efficiency and morphology of electrodeposited Fe powders were investigated. The morphology of obtained powders depends on the kind of supporting electrolyte, but not on the current density in investigated range. A characteristic feature of powders deposited from citrate-chloride supporting electrolyte is cauliflower-like compressed structure. On the other side, Fe powders electrodeposited from citrate-sulfate supporting electrolyte appeared in the form of spongy-like agglomerates. Possibility of Fe powders protection from corrosion in the process of production and during long-term storing has been shown.

AB - Copper electrodeposition processes in the hydrogen co-deposition range by the pulsating current (PC) regime were examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by the scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of the morphology of the formed deposits. The two sets of the square-wave PC of the same pause to pulse ratios, but with different duration of deposition pulses and pauses were analyzed. The one set of square-wave PC was with the constant pause duration and different deposition pulses. In the other set, the deposition pulse was constant while the pause duration was varied. The obtained results were compared with those obtained by electrodeposition at the constant overpotential from solutions of different CuSO(4) and H(2)SO(4) concentrations. It was found that the effect of the increasing deposition pulse was equivalent to the decreasing CuSO(4) concentration, while the effect of the decreasing pause duration was equivalent to the increasing H(2)SO(4) concentration. It is shown that it is possible to achieve a substitution of more solutions of different CuSO(4) and H(2)SO(4) concentartions by the use of the only one solution if the appropriate PC parameters were applied, what can be of high technological significance.

AB - This a review paper considering fundamental aspects of copper electrodeposition at high overpotentials where parallel to copper electrodeposition, hydrogen evolution reaction occurs. The two types of copper deposits are formed in the hydrogen co-deposition range: (a) the open and porous structures denoted as the honeycomb-like ones, and (b) powdered deposits. Phenomenology of the formation of the honeycomb-like structure, as well as factors affecting the formation of this type of structure are described in detail. The increase of the specific surface area of the honeycomb-like structure by the application of the periodically changing regimes of electrolysis, such as pulsating overpotential (PO) regime is considered. Correlation between the shape of copper powder particles and the quantity of evolved hydrogen by which they are formed was also presented.

AB - Electrodeposition of copper by pulsating overpotential (PO) regime in the hydrogen co-deposition range was examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by microscopic analysis of the morphology of the formed deposits. The techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy were used for the structural analysis of the copper deposits. Honeycomb-like electrodes were formed with an amplitude overpotential of 1000 mV, a pause of 10 ms, and deposition pulses of 3, 5, 10 and 20 ms. Holes formed by attached hydrogen bubbles were surrounded by dendrites (for deposition pulses of 3 and 5 ms) or agglomerates of copper grains (for 10 and 20 ms). In an interval of deposition pulses between 3 and 10 ms, the length of deposition pulse did not affect the size, number and depth of holes. The change of morphology of copper formed around holes was discussed by the effect of quantity of evolved hydrogen on effectiveness of stirring of solution in the near-electrode layer. The application of square-wave PO with the shorter deposition pulses enabled energy savings in the production of such copper electrodes. For example, the applied deposition pulse of 3 ms enabled energy saving of about 15% in relation to the copper electrode obtained with a deposition pulse of 10 ms (for the unchanged number, size and depth of holes).

abstract = "Electrodeposition of copper by pulsating overpotential (PO) regime in the hydrogen co-deposition range was examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by microscopic analysis of the morphology of the formed deposits. For example, the applied deposition pulse of 3 ms enabled energy saving of about 15% in relation to the copper electrode obtained with a deposition pulse of 10 ms (for the unchanged number, size and depth of holes).",

AB - Cross-section analysis of copper deposits electrodeposited in the hydrogen co-deposition range at a constant overpotential and in a pulsating overpotential (PO) regime was performed. It was shown that a complete structural analysis of these technologically very important electrodes is impossible without an analysis of their internal structure. An insight into the compactness (or porosity) of the deposits, as well as into the depth of the holes, can only be obtained by this type of analysis.

AB - The conditions under which ohmic controlled metal electrodeposition occurs are discussed using a simple mathematical model. it is shown that ohmic controlled electrodeposition can be operative if the value of the exchange current density for the electrodeposition process is more than 10 times larger than the corresponding value of the limiting diffusion current density. In this case, a linear dependence of the current density on overpotential up to the value of the limiting diffusion current density can be observed. On the other hand, the initiation of dendrite growth under these circumstances is possible, even at very low values of overpotential, at the moment when the limiting diffusion current density is attained in potentiostatic electrodeposition. In this way, instead of a limiting diffusion current density plateau. an inflection point on the polarization curve can be observed, since dendritic growth is followed by an increase in the deposition current density. At the same time. it is shown that the ensemble of tips of dendrites can behave as an ensemble of microelectrodes working independently under mixed or activation control due to the absence of a common diffusion layer. This was confirmed by deposition of copper on a copper dendritic electrode and by silver electrodeposition from a silver nitrate solution onto a graphite substrate.

AB - The formation of honeycomb-like structures in the pulsating overpotential (PO) regime was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The honeycomb-like structures obtained with a square-wave PO of different pause to pulse ratios were compared to the one obtained in the constant potentiostatic regime. Increasing the pause to pulse ratio led to a decrease of the diameter of the holes formed by attached hydrogen bubbles, as well as to an increase in the number of holes formed at the surface area of copper electrodes. The size of the agglomerates of copper grains, of which the walls of the holes were constructed, was reduced with increasing duration of the pause. Also, the uniformity of the honeycomb-like structures was increased by application of the PO regime. It was shown that the effects attained by application of this regime were comparable with those obtained by electrodeposition in a constant potential regime with the addition of specific additives.

AB - The electrodeposition of the Ni-Mo-O alloy powders from ammonium chloride containing electrolytes for different Ni/Mo ions concentration ratios was investigated by the polarization measurements. The morphology, chemical composition and phase composition of the electrodeposited Ni-Mo-O alloy powders were investigated using DSC, TGA, SEM, EDS and XRD analysis. According to the EDS results, the powder composition depends on the Ni/Mo ions concentration ratio. However, some deviations in the composition of the as-deposited powders, as the result of the position of the EDS analysis, revealed that the composition of such powders is not homogeneous. The as-deposited alloy powders were nanocrystalline showing only one broad XRD peak around 44 degrees. Their morphology was found to depend on the Ni/Mo ions concentration ratio. After annealing of the Ni-Mo-O powders for 2 h in N-2 atmosphere at 600 degrees C, well-defined crystals for all powders were detected by SEM. The presence of the NiMoO4 phase only or NiMoO4 and MoO3 phases in these powders (XRD), depending on the Ni/Mo ions concentration ratio, was identified. The additional EDS analysis on different recrystallized grains revealed the influence of the annealing on a composition of the alloy powders.

AB - The electro deposition of the Ni-Mo-O alloy powders from ammonium sulfate containing electrolytes of different Ni/Mo ions concentration ratios was investigated by the polarization measurements. In all electrolytes similar polarization curves were obtained, characterized by two inflection points Point A, the beginning of the electro deposition process and point B, a moment when the powder electro deposition is controlled by the hydrogen bubbles formation. The morphology of the electrodeposited Ni-Mo-O alloy powders was investigated using SEM. At Ni/Mo ratios higher or equal to 1/1 two types of particles were detected in the powder deposits: spongy-type particles (100 - 200 μm) with flat nodular surface and presence of cavities and agglomerates of similar dimensions characterized by the presence of cracks and cavities, with the nodular surface that is not flat, but is covered by the freshly formed dendrites. At Ni/Mo ratios of 1/3 the contribution of the amorphous-compact deposit is significant, while on top of this deposit rounded dendrite and compact outgrowths were detected.

abstract = "The electro deposition of the Ni-Mo-O alloy powders from ammonium sulfate containing electrolytes of different Ni/Mo ions concentration ratios was investigated by the polarization measurements. At Ni/Mo ratios of 1/3 the contribution of the amorphous-compact deposit is significant, while on top of this deposit rounded dendrite and compact outgrowths were detected., Elektrohemijsko taloženje prahova Ni-Mo-O legura ispitivano je snimanjem polarizacionih dijagrama u sulfatno-amonijačnim elektrolitima pri različitim odnosima Ni/Mo. Sve polarizacione krive okarakterisane su prisustvom dve prelomne tačke (A i B) na dijagramu. Tačka A odgovara početku taloženja Ni-Mo-O legure, dok tačka B reflektuje momenat kada je ukupna elektrohemijska reakcija kontrolisana brzinom formiranja mehurova gasovitog vodonika pri čemu se sa povećanjem koncentracije MoO4 2- jona u elektrolitu potencijal početka taloženja (tačka A) pomera ka negativnijim vrednostima. Morfologija čestica prahova ispitivana je skenirajućom elektronskom mikroskopijom (SEM). AB - Polarization characteristics of the electrodeposition processes of Fe powders from sulfate and chloride electrolytes and the morphology of the obtained powders were investigated. The morphology depended on the anion pre sence in the electrolyte but not on the current density in the investigated range. A characteristic feature of the dendritic powder with cauliflower endings obtained from sulfate electrolyte is the presence of cone-like cavities and the crystallite morphology of the powders surface. On the other hand, Fe powders electrodeposited from chloride electrolyte appear in the form of agglomerates. A soap solution treatment applied as a method of washing and drying provides good protection from oxidation of the powders.

AB - The relative concentration of hydrogen ion (H(+)) as a function of sulfuric acid (H(2)SO(4)) concentration (calculated using Pitzer's model) and the electrochemical processes by which irregular copper deposits are formed were correlated. Irregular deposits are formed by potentiostatic electrodeposition at a high overpotential where the hydrogen evolution reaction occurs parallel to copper electrodeposition. Two sets of acid sulfate solutions were analyzed. In one set of experiments, the concentration of CuSO(4) was constant while the concentration of H(2)SO(4) was varied. The other set of experiments was performed with a constant concentration of H(2)SO(4) and different concentrations of CuSO(4). Then, the volumes of the evolved hydrogen (calculated as the average current efficiencies of hydrogen evolution) and the morphologies of copper deposits, characterized by the SEM technique, obtained for the same ratio of CuSO(4)/H(2)SO(4) were mutually compared and discussed in terms of the relative concentrations of hydrogen ions (H(+)) as a function of the H(2)SO(4) concentration. Good agreement between the ionic equilibrium in the CuSO(4)-H(2)SO(4)-H(2)O system and the results of the electrochemical processes was obtained. In this way, it was shown how this ionic equilibrium can be applied to predict and analyze the solution composition in electrolytic copper deposition processes.

AB - Copper powder particles formed by electrolysis under different quantities of evolved hydrogen were analyzed using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. It was found that the structure of the powder particles strongly depended on the quantity of evolved hydrogen that is, two types of powder particles were formed, depending on the quantity of evolved hydrogen. One type of particle was formed during the electrodeposition of copper when the quantity of evolved hydrogen was insufficient to change the hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer. This particle type comprised dendrites constructed of corncob-like structures as the basic element. The other type of particle was cauliflower-like and was formed when the quantity of evolved hydrogen was sufficient to change the hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer. However, both types of particle consisted of agglomerates of copper grains. The only difference lay in the size of the copper grains of which the agglomerates were constituted. The size of the grains was a function of the electrodeposition overpotential and, consequently, the quantity of evolved hydrogen, with a tendency to attain a steady value when the electrodeposition overpotential was increased.

AB - Formation of irregular deposits by electrodeposition from acid sulfate solutions of various H2SO4 concentrations was examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by the scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of the copper deposits morphology. Copper dendrites were the dominant morphological form obtained at overpotentials corresponding to the plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density. The number of the formed dendrites was increasing with the decreasing H2SO4 concentration. Holes formed due to the attached hydrogen bubbles were the basic morphological form of electrodeposited copper from all analyzed copper sulfate solutions at overpotentials outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density. The honeycomb-like structures (holes of the detached hydrogen bubbles with cauliflower-like agglomerates of copper grains between them) were formed if electrodepositions were performed from 0.15 M CuSO4 in both 0.250 M and 1.0 M H2SO4. On the other hand, aside from the holes and cauliflower-like forms, electrodeposition from 0.15 M CuSO4 in 0.125 M H2SO4 led to the formation of degenerated dendrites and dendritic particles inside channels formed of evolved hydrogen. Holes with shoulders of degenerated dendrites were also formed. The formation of different morphological forms under hydrogen co-deposition was discussed in the terms of hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer using the values for the break-off diameter of hydrogen bubbles.

AB - The ionic equilibrium of the species in the CuSO4-H2SO4-H2O system was employed to systematize the conditions of copper electrodeposition leading to the formation of the honeycomb-like structure. The reason why CuSO4 concentrations higher than 0.15 M are unsuitable for the formation of honeycomb-like structures is shown. The range of H2SO4 concentrations enabling the formation of this type of structure was also determined. The conditions leading to the formation of the honeycomb-like structures are: electrodeposition from solutions with lower concentrations of Cu(II) ions (0.15 M CuSO4 and less) in a concentration range from 0.25 to 1.0 M H2SO4, at a temperature of 18.0±1.0°C and at overpotentials outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density at which hydrogen evolution is vigorous enough to change the hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer. .

abstract = "The ionic equilibrium of the species in the CuSO4-H2SO4-H2O system was employed to systematize the conditions of copper electrodeposition leading to the formation of the honeycomb-like structure. The reason why CuSO4 concentrations higher than 0.15 M are unsuitable for the formation of honeycomb-like structures is shown. The range of H2SO4 concentrations enabling the formation of this type of structure was also determined. The conditions leading to the formation of the honeycomb-like structures are: electrodeposition from solutions with lower concentrations of Cu(II) ions (0.15 M CuSO4 and less) in a concentration range from 0.25 to 1.0 M H2SO4, at a temperature of 18.0±1.0°C and at overpotentials outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density at which hydrogen evolution is vigorous enough to change the hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer. ., Analizirana je jonska ravnoteža u sistemu CuSO4-H2SO4-H2O da bi se sistematizovali uslovi elektrohemijskog taloženja bakra koji dovode do formiranja strukture pčelinjeg saća.
