AB - Sorghum grain (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is a gluten-free cereal with excellent nutritional value and is a good source of antioxidants, including polyphenols, as well as minerals with proven health benefits. Herein, the phenolic composition, elemental profile, and antioxidant activity of sixteen food-grade sorghum grains (S1–S16) grown under agroecological conditions in Serbia were determined. Nine phenolic compounds characteristic of sorghum grains, such as luteolinidin, 5-methoxyluteolinidin, luteolidin derivative, luteolidin glucoside, apigeninidin, 7-methoxyapigeninidin, apigeninidin glucoside, and cyanidin derivative, were quantified. The antioxidant potential of the analyzed sorghum grains was evaluated by UV/Vis (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy (hydroxyl and ascorbyl radical scavenging assays). The content of macro- and microelements was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission spectroscopy. Theoretical daily intakes of selected major and trace elements were assessed and compared with the Recommended Daily Allowance or Adequate Intake. Sample S8 had the highest amount of phenolic compounds, while S4, S6, and S8 exhibited the strongest antioxidative potential. The sorghum studied could completely satisfy the daily needs of macro- (K, Mg, and P) and microelements (Se, Zn, Fe). Pattern recognition techniques confirmed the discrimination of samples based on phenolic profile and elemental analysis and recognized the main markers responsible for differences between the investigated samples. The reaction between hydroxyl radicals and luteolinidin/apigeninidin was investigated by Density Functional Theory and thermodynamically preferred mechanism was determined.

AB - Lakes and reservoirs are the main water resources for household, irrigation, and industrial use. Hence, it is necessary to control water pollution and have reliable information on water quality, which refers to its suitability for a particular purpose. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of water for drinking and irrigation purposes from ten artificial lakes on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The physicochemical parameters were determined using standard analytical methods, whereas the optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma, ICP-OES, was used to determine the concentrations of 23 macro-, micro-, and trace elements in water. Health risk indices of drinking water and its suitability for irrigation purposes were evaluated. The results of physicochemical parameters, except for total organic matter, indicated that most samples were within the recommended values. Among analyzed elements, the concentration of Mg was elevated in the water of the lakes Srebrno and Prvonek. The results of health risk assessment clearly showed that there was no acute health risk (HQA < 1), whereas long-term risk (HQL) in the studied lakes was observed with respect to As (lakes Grlište and Srebrno), Mn (lakes Srebrno and Prvonek), Ni (Lake Vrutci), and Sr (Lake Grlište). The irrigation criteria indicated that the water from the examined lakes had satisfactory quality for this purpose, except for residual sodium carbonates (RSC). This criterion indicated low quality or unsuitability of the water in 7 lakes. The main outcomes provided valuable information on the suitability of water from the artificial lakes for intended uses.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the quality of real samples of drinking water, collected from the territory of the city of Požega and the surrounding rural areas. An analytical technique of inductively coupled plasma with optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used to determine the concentrations of macro-and microelements in water samples. The obtained results were compared with the maximum allowed concentrations of elements specified by the national Regulation on hygienic quality of drinking water, as well as the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The analysed waters were low-mineralized (<1000 mg/L), calcium waters, with low sodium content. The concentrations of all tested elements in the water samples were within the allowed values. There were obvious differences in chemical composition between surface water samples and groundwater samples. All tested waters can be safely used for irrigation, because the risk of soil salinization, sodium accumulation and harmful effects of boron on crops was assessed as insignificant.

AB - Even though platinum(II/IV) complexes are found to be very active as anticancer agents, they have many well-known limitations. These drawbacks reflect through severe side-effects due to damaging healthy tissue and resistance. Exploring non-platinum metal complexes emerged as essential since they might exhibit different mechanism of action as well as reduced side effects, than platinum(II)-based ones. In this review, the progress in the field of anticancer chemistry of palladium(II)-based complexes will be given highlighting the close relationship between their structural preferences and cytotoxic ability. Activity and structure of a significant number of palladium complexes described in literature will be conjoint, and probable in vivo mechanism of palladium(II) species discussed. It is shown that bidentate chelating amines (e.g. (S,S)-R2edda-type ligands; R2edda = O,O’-dialkyl-ethylenediamine-N,N’-diacete esters) as ligands could play a crucial role in the stability of complexes and their ability to express biological activity. Complexes with general formulae [PdCl2{(S,S)-R2edda-type}], demonstrate good to moderate antiproliferative activity versus various cancer cell lines with emphasizing of O,O’-dipropyl-(S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N’-di-2-(4-methyl)pentanoate, [PdCl2(S,S)-(n-Pr)2eddl] (most powerful against chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells, CLL). Structural features and diastereoisomers arising from nitrogen coordination in square-planar palladium(II) complexes with bidentate κ2N,N’ or tridentate κ2N,N’κO, ligands will be summarized and discussed. In vitro cytotoxicity of these complexes on a number of tumor cell lines will give an insight in structure–activity relationships which may lead to the divergence from platinum based drugs. Additionally, an overview of antimicrobial activity is presented.

AB - The synthesis of novel triphenyltin(IV) compounds, Ph3SnLn (n = 1–3), with oxaprozin (3-(4,5-diphenyloxazol-2-yl)propanoic acid), HL1, and the new propanoic acid derivatives 3-(4,5bis(4-methoxylphenyl)oxazol-2-yl)propanoic acid, HL2, and 3-(2,5-dioxo-4,4-diphenylimidazolidin1-yl)propanoic acid, HL3, has been performed. The ligands represent commercial drugs or their derivatives and the tin complexes have been characterized by standard analytical methods. The in vitro antiproliferative activity of both ligands and organotin(IV) compounds has been evaluated on the following tumour cell lines: human prostate cancer (PC-3), human colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT29), breast cancer (MCF-7), and hepatocellular cancer (HepG2), as well as on normal mouse embryonic fibroblast cells (NIH3T3) with the aid of MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-12 diphenyltetrazolium bromide) and CV (crystal violet) assays. Contrary to the inactive ligand precursors, all organotin(IV) carboxylates showed very good activity with IC50 values ranging from 0.100 to 0.758 µM. According to the CV assay (IC50 = 0.218 ± 0.025 µM), complex Ph3SnL1 demonstrated the highest cytotoxicity against the caspase 3 deficient MCF-7 cell line. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis indicated a two-fold lower concentration of tin in MCF-7 cells in comparison to platinum. To investigate the mechanism of action of the compound Ph3SnL1 on MCF-7 cells, morphological, autophagy and cell cycle analysis, as well as the activation of caspase and ROS/RNS and NO production, has been performed. Results suggest that Ph3SnL1 induces caspase-independent apoptosis in MCF-7 cells.

AB - Two novel triphenyltin(IV) compounds, [Ph3SnL1] (L1 = 2-(5-(4-fluorobenzylidene)-2,4-dioxotetrahydrothiazole-
3-yl)propanoate (1)) and [Ph3SnL2] (L2 = 2-(5-(5-methyl-2-furfurylidene)-2,4-dioxotetrahydrothiazole-
3-yl)propanoate (2)) were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, (1H and 13C) NMR spectroscopy,
mass spectrometry, and elemental microanalysis. The in vitro anticancer activity of the synthesized organotin(IV)
compounds was determined against four tumor cell lines: PC-3 (prostate), HT-29 (colon), MCF-7 (breast), and
HepG2 (hepatic) using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-12 diphenyltetrazolium bromide) and CV (crystal
violet) assays. The IC50 values are found to be in the range from 0.11 to 0.50 μM. Compound 1 exhibits the
highest activity toward PC-3 cells (IC50 = 0.115 } 0.009 μM; CV assay). The tin and platinum uptake in PC-3
cells showed a threefold lower uptake of tin in comparison to platinum (as cisplatin). Together with its higher
activity this indicates a much higher cell inhibition potential of the tin compounds (calculated to ca. 50 to 100
times). Morphological analysis suggested that the compounds induce apoptosis in PC-3 cells, and flow cytometry
analysis revealed that 1 and 2 induce autophagy as well as NO (nitric oxide) production.

AB - A novel triphenyltin(IV) compound with 1-(4-carboxyphenyl)-3-ethyl-3-methylpyrrolidine-2,5-dione was synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. In vitro anticancer activity of ligand precursor and synthesized organotin(IV) compound was determined against tumor cell lines: human adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human myelogenous leukemia (K562), and human breast cancer (MDA-MB-453), using microculture tetrazolium test (MTT) assay. The results indicate that complex exhibited very high antiproliferative activity against all tested cell lines with IC 50 values in the range of 0.22 to 0.53 µ M. The highest activity organotin(IV) compound expressed against the HeLa cells (IC 50 = 0.22 ± 0.04 µ M). The ligand precursor did not show anticancer activity (IC 50 > 200 µ M). Furthermore, fluorescence microscopy analysis of HeLa cells reveal that organotin(IV) complex induced apoptosis as a mode of cell death, which is consistent with the increase of cells in the sub-G1 phase.

Furthermore, fluorescence microscopy analysis of HeLa cells reveal that organotin(IV) complex induced apoptosis as a mode of cell death, which is consistent with the increase of cells in the sub-G1 phase.",

AB - The goal of this study is to evaluate the quality of seven natural mineral water sources in the Vrnjačka Banja area used in the treatment of various diseases. The 24 macro- and microelements were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results show that element content was within allowed limits of concentration, except for B, As, and Se. The evaluated content of these elements can be associated with geological and anthropogenic factors. The sample S6 contains more than twice the concentration of As, meaning that the use of water from this source should be limited due to the negative impact of this element on human health. The calculated values of weekly (EWI) and oral (OI) intakes as well as the acute hazard quotient (HQA) of selected toxic and potentially toxic elements indicate no health risks to the consumers. The highest hazard quotient (HQL) observed for As in sample S6 (2.0·10−1) demonstrated a significant risk of carcinogenic diseases in long-term consumption from this source. The estimated non-carcinogenic (DIA) and carcinogenic (DIL) dermal intakes with acute (HQA) and long-term (HQL) hazard quotient values for sample S3 show that there is no health risk to those who use the water from this thermal source for bathing. The presence of aerobic mesophilic bacteria at 22 °C and 37 °C in samples S3, S6, and S7 as well as sulphite-reducing Clostridia species in sample S5 were detected, potentially indicating some non-faecal or faecal contamination.

AB - Two novel organotin(IV) compounds containing 2-propanoic acid derivatives were synthesized and characterized by standard spectroscopic methods. In vitro antiproliferative activity of these complexes was investigated versus four tumor cell lines: PC3 (prostate), HT-29 (colon), MCF-7 (breast) and HepG2 (hepatic) using MTT and CV assays. The results have shown that that synthesized complexes exhibit remarkable anticancer activity toward all tested cell lines with 54 to 113 fold higher activity than the reference compound cisplatin. The obtained promising results indicate the necessity for further in vitro/in vivo research with the aim to investigate the mechanism of action of these potencial antitumor agents.

AB - The biosynthetic pathway of biogenic amines is very active during the growth of many tumour cells. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma represents a very heterogeneous group of malignancies. The concentration level of some biogenic amines (putrescine, histamine, spermidine, epinephrine, and spermine) was investigated to elucidate whether they could be observed as markers for the patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In this study, the method of acidic extraction of five biogenic amines from human serum, dansyl chloride pre-column derivatization, and LC/DAD analysis were used to determine the content of biogenic amines in biological fluids. The results indicate that statistically significant differences exist in putrescine, spermidine and histamine contents in non-Hodgkin’s patients versus healthy controls. The concentrations of putrescine, spermidine and epinephrine were elevated, and histamine was lower compared to controls. Based on their content, serum biogenic amines could be considered as potential tumour markers.

AB - Water is one of the most precious natural resources. The downtrend in the quality of lake water and pollution with heavy metals cause serious threats to the environment in last decades. Particularly vulnerable are the lakes that are located near towns and villages. The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical parameters and levels of macro– and microelements in order to determine the water quality of Lake Gruža in the summer period. The results showed that the studied parameters were within the permissible levels, except of concentrations of iron, cobalt and vanadium.

AB - Six gold(III) complexes with esters of cyclohexyl-functionalized ethylenediamine-N,N’-diacetate, general formula [AuCl2{(S,S)-R2eddch}]PF6, [(S,S)-eddch = (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N’-di-2-(3-cyclohexyl)propanoate, R = Me, Et, n-Pr, n-Bu, i-Bu, i-Am, 1-6, respectively], were tested against cancer cell lines such as human melanoma Fem-x, human colon carcinoma LS174T and non-small cell lung carcinoma A549 as well as a non-cancerous human embryonic lung fibroblasts MRC-5 using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay with the aim of assessing in vitro antitumoral activity and selectivity. All investigated complexes showed lower cytotoxicity and better or similar selectivity in comparison to cisplatin, used as reference compound. Complex [AuCl2{(S,S)-(i-Am)2eddch}]PF6 (6) demonstrated the highest activity against Fem-x (IC50 = 14.98 ± 0.34 µM). Additionally, the same complex expressed 4.5 times higher selectivity than cisplatin.

Additionally, the same complex expressed 4.5 times higher selectivity than cisplatin.",

AB - Four novel gold(III) complexes of general formulae [AuCl2{(S,S)-R(2)eddl}]PF6 (R(2)eddl = O,O'-dialkyl-(S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-(4-methyl)pentanoate, R= n-Pr, n-Bu, n-Pe, i-Bu; 1-4, respectively), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, UV/Vis, IR, and NMR spectroscopy, as well as high resolution mass spectrometry. Density functional theory calculations pointed out that (R,R)-N,N'-configuration diastereoisomers were energetically the most favorable. Duo to high cytotoxic activity complex 3 was chosen for stability study in DMSO, no decomposition occurs within 24 h, and for the reaction with ascorbic acid in which was reduced immediately. Additionally, 3 interacts with bovine serum albumin (BSA) as proven by UV/Vis spectroscopy. In vitro antitumor activity was determined against human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human myelogenous leukemia (K562), and human melanoma (Fem-x) cancer cell lines, as well as against non-cancerous human embryonic lung fibroblast cells MRC-5. The highest activity was observed against K562 cells (IC50: 5.04-6.51 mu M). Selectivity indices showed that these complexes are less toxic than cisplatin. 3 had a similar viability kinetics on HeLa cells as cisplatin. Drug accumulation studies in HeLa cells showed that the total gold uptake increased much faster than that of cisplatin pointing out that 3 more efficiently enters the cells than cisplatin. Furthermore, morphological and cell cycle analysis reveal that gold(III) complexes induced apoptosis in time- and dose-dependent manner.

AB - The aim of this study was to evaluate the content of trace elements and physicochemical properties of water samples in the territories of southern Banat and Zemun (Serbia). The contents of twenty-two macro- and microelements were determined using ICP analysis. Prior to this, the typical parameters were evaluated using standard analytical methods. The contents of elements in all studied samples were within the maximum allowed concentrations established by national regulations on the water quality for human use of examined elements, except for Na, Fe, B, Mn, As and Co. The most of elevated metal concentrations were recorded in the samples from Zrenjanin area, with special emphasis on increased concentrations of arsenic. Besides, the higher concentrations of iron and manganese were found in samples S03 and S04, respectively. The increased concentrations of iron, arsenic and manganese in the samples from southern Banat area could be explained by the presence and reductive dissolution of some iron minerals in the subsurface which could contain As or Mn as trace elements. Increased concentration of boron could be the consequence of its leaching from ground caused by the adequate pH value. The obtained results indicate that geology of terrain might be the main cause of elevated concentrations of iron, boron, arsenic and manganese in the study region. Potential human weekly and long-term health risk was determined and expressed through exposure risk assessment. It has been found that only arsenic in sample S07 represents a great weekly risk. On the long-term basis, consumption of waters with elevated concentrations of boron/S05-08/ and manganese/S04, S07 and S08/ can be considered as high health risk. Our study indicates that both risk assessments need to be done, in order to better understand the real risk of increased concentrations of harmful elements on human health.

AB - Biogenic amines are integral part of nearly every cell. In the present study, the method of acidic extraction of histamine (His), of polyamines putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd) and catecholamines epinephrine (Epi) and norepinephrine (NE) from human serum, precolumn derivatization with dansyl chloride, and LC/DAD analysis of the biogenic amines was used with the aim of monitoring differences of their levels in patients with diabetes mellitus, chronic urticaria, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, compared to healthy subjects, and to observe them as possible markers for immune mediated diseases. The retention times were used for the determination of serum biogenic amines. Statistically significant differences were found in the levels of putrescine and histamine in diabetes mellitus patients, of the levels of putrescine, histamine, spermidine and epinephrine in chronic urticaria patients and of the levels of putrescine and spermidine levels in Hashimoto's thyroiditis patients, compared to those of healthy controls. Norepinephrine was found only in the serum of patients with chronic urticaria. The values of recovery, evaluated in controls, varied between 85.7 and 106.7 %. The statistically significant changes in putrescine, histamine, spermidine and epinephrine levels in patients compared with those in healthy people reflects the existence of biochemical disturbances in the mentioned immune-mediated diseases.

AB - Five novel gold(III) complexes of general formulas [AuCl2{(S,S)-R(2)eddip}]PF6, ((S,S)-eddip = (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-propanoate, R = n-Bu, n-Pe, i-Bu, i-Am, cPe; 1-5, respectively) were synthesized and characterized by UV/Vis, IR and NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. DFT calculations indicated that (R,R)-N,N'-configuration diastereoisomers were the most stable for 1-5. 3 is stable in DMSO for at least 24 h, but immediate hydrolysis in PBS occurs. 3 is readily reduced with ascorbic acid and forms adducts with bovine serum albumin (BSA). In vitro anticancer activity of the gold(III) complexes against human cervix adenocarcinoma HeLa, human myelogenous leukemia K562, human melanoma Fem-x tumor cell lines, as well as against non-cancerous human embryonic lung fibroblast cell line MRC5 was determined using MIT assay. Complex 4 showed highest activity and selectivity (IC50(Femx) = 1.3 +/- 0.2; IC50(MRC-5)/IC50(Fem-x) = 72.5 +/- 12.4), 4 times more active and 28 times more selective than cisplatin. Complexes induced apoptotic mode of death in a time-dependent manner in HeLa cells.

AB - A novel (S,S)-R(2)eddip ester, O,O'-diisopentyl-(S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-propanoate dihydrochloride (1) was synthesized and characterized by IR, H-1- and C-13-NMR spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In vitro antitumor action of 1, and two more R(2)eddip esters, dialkyl (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-propanoate dihydrochlorides, obtained before (alkyl = n-Bu or n-Pe, 2 and 3, respectively), was determined against cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human melanoma (Fem-x), human chronic myelogenous leukemia (K562) cells, and a non-cancerous cell line human embryonic lung fibroblast (MRC-5), using the microculture tetrazolium test MTT assay. Esters 1-3 showed higher cytotoxicity and better selectivity in comparison to cisplatin, used as reference compound. The highest activity was expressed by 1, with IC50(Fem-x) value of 1.51 +/- 0.09 mu M.

AB - Six palladium(II) complexes with (S,S)-R(2)edda-type esters ((S,S)-R2edda-type; (S,S)-eddch = (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-(3-cyclohexyl)propanoate, R = Me, Et, n-Pr, 1-3; (S,S)-pddch = (S,S)-propylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-(3-cyclohexyl)propanoate, R = Et, n-Pr, 4, 5; and (S,S)-eddip = (S,S)-ethylenediamne-N,N'-di-2-propanoate, R = i-Am, 6) were synthesized, characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS and elemental analysis. DFT calculations indicate that in case of 1-4, the most stable isomers are with (S,S)- and (R,S)-configuration of nitrogen atoms, but for complex 6 (R,R)- and (R,S)-N,N'-configured isomers. Furthermore, complex 5 was obtained as (S,S)-N,N' configured isomer. Cytotoxicity study was performed against human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human alveolar basal adenocarcinoma (A549) and non-cancerous human fetal lung fibroblast (MRC-5) cell lines using colorimetric MTT assay. From the investigated palladium(II) complexes 2, 3 and 5 exhibited highest cytotoxic potential against HeLa (IC50: 28.5 +/- 3.9, 29.5 +/- 1.3 and 34.3 +/- 3.2, respectively).

AB - Three novel complexes of platinum(II) with R(2)edda bidentate ligands [PtCl2(R(2)edda)] (R = Me, Et, n-Pr; edda = ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetate; 1-3), are synthesized and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. All complexes exist in three stereoisomeric forms (R,R), (S,S) and (R,S)(S,R). In addition crystal structure of one platinum(IV) complex [PtCl4((n-Pr)(2)edda)], 4, is presented. Furthermore, in order to assign stereoisomers of 1-3, a reduction of racemic [PtCl4(Et(2)edda)] by ascorbic acid to [PtCl2(Et(2)edda)] (2) was performed and analyzed by H-1 NMR. Time-depending H-1 NMR spectroscopic experiments were implemented to study the stability of ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetate diesters. Finally, the in vitro cytotoxic activity of complexes 1-3 was studied on 11 tumor cell lines, 518A2 (melanoma), 8505C (human thyroid carcinoma), A253 (head and neck tumor), A431 (cervix), A549 (lung), A2780 (ovarian), MCF-7 (breast) and HT-29, HCT-8, DLD-1, SW1736 (all colon) by the SRB colorimetric assay method. Complex 3 showed the highest action against ovarian (A2780) cells with an IC50 value 51 +/- 1 mu M.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that diastereoisomer with the N,N' atoms configured (S,S) was the most stable. In vitro antiproliferative activity was determined against human cervix adenocarcinoma HeLa and human myelogenous leukemia K562 tumor cell lines, as well as against rested and stimulated normal immunocompetent human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Complex 6 expressed the highest activity against K562 cells (IC50 = 3.8 +/- 0.5 mu M). Apoptosis, seen as condensation of HeLa cell nuclei was the mode of cell death induced by complexes 2-6. Complexes 3-6 induced death of K562 cells inhibiting cell entry in mitosis.
