AB - TiO2 and CeO2 are well known as oxygen sensing materials. Despite high sensitivity, the actual utilization of these materials in gas detection remains limited. Research conducted over the last two decades has revealed synergistic effects of TiO2-CeO2 mixed oxides that have the potential to improve some aspects of oxygen monitoring. However, there are no studies on the sensing properties of the TiO2-CeO2 obtained by mechanochemical treatment. We have tested the applicability of the mechanochemically treated TiO2-CeO2 for oxygen detection and presented the results in this study. The sensing layers are prepared as a porous structure by screen printing a thick film on a commercial substrate. The obtained structures were exposed to various O2 concentrations. The results of electrical measurements showed that TiO2-CeO2 films have a significantly lower resistance than pure oxide films. Mixtures of composition TiO2:CeO2 = 0.8:0.2, ground for 100 min, have the lowest electrical resistance among the tested materials. Mixtures of composition TiO2:CeO2 = 0.5:0.5 and ground for 100 min proved to be the most sensitive. The operating temperature can be as low as 320 °C, which places this sensor in the class of semiconductor sensors working at relatively lower temperatures.

AB - The main goals of this study are: i) employ the electrochemical methods as alternative methods for alumina-supported cobalt (Co-A) surface characterization; ii) investigate the electro-catalytic activity of different cobalt phases toward glucose, and iii) implement the mechanochemical approach for the synthesis of the fourth generation of glucose sensing materials. Co3O4 and alumina were either manual grinded (Co3O4-A) or ball-milled (CoAl2O4-A) with different amounts of cobalt in CoAl2O4-A. The final products were characterized by XRF, LDPSA, XRD and TPR. The electrodes were prepared in the form of the carbon paste electrode and tested in supporting electrolyte (1 M NaOH) as well as in a glucose-containing solution. The CV, EIS, and chronoamperometry were used for electrochemical measurements. TPR revealed the formation of CoAl2O4 during the ball milling process. Different cobalt phases significantly affected the electrochemical responses. Higher activity of CoAl2O4-A toward glucose oxidation in comparison with Co3O4-A was ascribed to tetrahedral Co2+ ion acting as the active site in glucose oxidation. In addition, results convinced employing the scarcely employed mechanochemical synthesis protocols for obtaining glucose-sensing materials. Finally, it was proven that electrochemical techniques can be harnessed as alternative, new, powerful methods for Co-A surface characterization.

AB - In recent years, mineral oxides (i.e. zeolite, alumina and clay minerals)-supported non-precious transition metals have extensively studied as highly promising sustainable and green glucose-sensing materials (Mudrinić, 2019). The reason for that is their low cost, easiness of synthesis, low negative environmental impact, and desirable electrochemical properties toward glucose oxidation.
It is widely accepted that the catalytic activity of the mineral oxides-supported cobalt is strongly influenced by cobalt-mineral oxide interaction. As a consequence of this interaction different cobalt oxides (Wang, 1991) could be formed: Co3O4-contains both cobalt ions in tetrahedral (Co2+Td) and octahedral (Co3+Oh) coordination and CoAl2O4-contains only Co2+Td. However, little is known about the catalytic activity of these cobalt oxides (i.e. cobalt ions) in the reaction of the electro-oxidation of glucose.
In this work, cobalt oxides in both tetrahedral (Co2+Td) and octahedral (Co3+Oh) coordination and with only Co2+Td were synthesized on aluminum pillared clay (AP) and alumina (A). The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). Electrochemical measurements were performed in alkaline solution with and without glucose using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronoamperometry (CA). TPR and XPS along with the results of electrochemical measurements in alkaline solutions without glucose confirmed the successful synthesis of the different cobalt oxides on both AP and A. The electrochemical measurements in glucose-containing solutions showed the enhanced electrocatalytic activity of AP and A with Co2+Td in comparison to their counterparts with both Co2+Td and Co3+Oh. This result suggested that the Co2+Td acted as the main active site for the glucose oxidation.

AB - Recently the focus of electrochemical glucose sensing is on the fabrication of enzyme-free electrodes based on non-precious transition metal oxides, especially cobalt oxide [1]. To our best knowledge, these materials were primarily prepared by conventional methods using solutions, while the solvent-free mechanochemical approach was scarcely reported. Therefore, in this work Co3O4 supported on alumina (Co3O4/Al2O3) were prepared by ball milling using different milling times (0.5, 1, and 2 h) and Co3O4 contents (4, 8, and 16 wt. %). Ball to powder ratio was 30:1 and the rotation speed was 300 rpm. The electrodes based on the synthesized material were prepared in the form of a carbon paste electrodes (CP-Co3O4/Al2O3). The particle size distribution, phase, and chemical composition of the obtained materials were determined using LDPSA, XRPD, and XRF, respectively. The electrochemical performance of the CP-Co3O4/A12O3 electrode was tested in an alkaline solution containing glucose using cyclovoltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (ChA). CV revealed that milling time affected the electrochemical response. The highest current response was obtained with material milled for 1 h. Both ChA and CV confirmed that the electrochemical performance was further improved by increasing cobalt content. The CP electrode-based mechanochemically prepared samples showed enhanced performance in comparison to hand mixed Co3O4 and alumina. The beneficial effect of ball milling was attributed to the high dispersion of cobalt oxides over alumina even for large cobalt loadings without agglomeration. The obtained experimental results proved that the solvent-free mechanochemical approach is a promising synthetic route for obtaining green and sustainable glucose-sensing material for the fourth generation.

AB - Quantifying rock weathering processes, especially in ways of nondisturbance and on-site investigation, is one of the most critical tasks in predicting rocks erosion rates and understanding the sediment transportation. We proposed a more reproducible approach to test how image analysis can quantify the changes in the size and shape of fragments during the weathering process. Four artificial models were designed to select suitable metrics among over 20 parameters. To validate the efficiency of image analysis, we analyzed rocks from badlands in Nanxiong Basin, Southeast China, under three different ranges of temperature differences (TD) during cyclic wetting and drying (WD). Our results show that TDs can accelerate the disintegration rate, and even if there is only a 20°C difference in the range of TDs, an apparent difference in fragment size was observed. Moreover, the shape of fragments became more round as the increasing number of cyclic treatments, and for samples that went through the same number of treatments, the larger the temperature difference, the more round the shape became. All that serves as another evidence for landscape evolution response to climatic warming.

AB - This work describes the possible application of cyclic voltammetry (CV) for obtaining information about cobalt phases onto alumina supported cobalt catalysts.Starting from the same amount of ingredients, two catalysts with different phases of cobalt were prepared: Co3O4-A obtained by manual grinding of Co3O4 and alumina in an agate mortar and CoAl2O4-A obtained mechanochemically using a planetary ball mill. The final productswere characterized by the temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and CV. The TPR profile of Co3O4-A showed peaks between 200–500°C characteristic of Co3O4 reduction, while the profile of CoAl2O4-A was altered in the whole temperature region and especially by the appearance of new peaks in the region of temperatures of 600–900oC.This result indicated that a certain amount ofhard-to-reduce cobalt aluminate is generated during milling. CVin alkaline solution revealed that theoxidation/reduction of cobalt in CoAl2O4-Aoccurred at more negative potentials compared with cobalt in Co3O4-A.Negative shift of peak potential well correlated with the appearance of high-temperature TPR peak and could be ascribed to the cobalt phase which has lower tendency to get reduced. These findings encourage the idea of using the CV as low cost and rapid assay for distinguishing the cobalt phases onto alumina.

AB - In this paper, the relationship of structure, type of oxygen defects, valence states of Cr and Ru, and electro-
chemical properties of La0.7Sr0.3Cr1-XRuXO3 (0 < x < 0.1) perovskite-type oxides were studied. The samples were
synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray
fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron
paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The electrochemical performance of these samples was evaluated towards
the detection of 4-nitrophenol and strongly depends on the concentration of ruthenium incorporated in the
crystal lattice. A new La0.7Sr0.3Cr0.925Ru0.075O3 electrocatalyst with a wide linear concentration range (25–5000
mM) and a detection limit of 8 mM was obtained. These results provide an opportunity for its application in the
analysis of real water samples.

AB - This paper presents a new two-step method for the synthesis of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 semiconductors, which implies, the first, the mechanochemical synthesis of TiO2–CeO2 support, and the second is the doping of different NiO contents by chemical precipitation in an aqueous medium in an ambient atmosphere. Structural, optical, electrochemical and photocatalytic properties of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 semiconductors were examined. The influence of different NiO contents on the electrocatalytic activity of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 samples was investigated in the oxygen evolution reaction and the results showed that the samples with the lowest NiO content have the highest electroactivity. The photocatalytic activity was determined during the phenol decomposition process over the samples with different NiO:TiO2–CeO2 ratios and the best photocatalytic activity is observed for the sample with 4.1 mol% NiO. The sample with the lowest NiO content obtained by a relatively simple method is suitable for use both as an electrode material in the oxygen evolution reaction and as a photocatalyst in the phenol decomposition process.

AB - The LaTi0.4Mg0.4Fe0.2O3 perovskite was synthesized using a mechanochemical process followed by high-temperature annealing at 600 and 800 °C. The effects of milling time and annealing temperature on structural, microstructural changes and optical properties were examined. The photocatalytic activity of LaTi0.4Mg0.4Fe0.2O3 perovskite was evaluated through the photodegradation of methyl orange and methylene blue dyes under UV light irradiation. The results showed that the annealing temperature performed an important role in the crystallite size, crystalline degree, photoluminescence, and band gaps of the LaTi0.4Mg0.4Fe0.2O3 samples. The temperature of annealing had a profound influence on the photocatalytic activities of the LaTi0.4Mg0.4Fe0.2O3 perovskite in the single and binary dye system. The highest photocatalytic activity for methyl orange degradation showed the LaTi0.4Mg0.4Fe0.2O3 annealed at 800 °C, while not annealed sample, show the highest activity for degradation of methylene blue. The maximum efficiency of methylene blue photodegradation in individual and binary mixtures was observed over non-annealed perovskite at the same irradiation times. The photodegradation of methylene blue and methyl orange on the LaTi0.4Mg0.4Fe0.2O3 followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic process.

AB - The spray pyrolysis is fast and simple method for deposition of CeO2 – rutile TiO2 coatings on stainless steel substrate. The coatings were deposited on stainless steel substrate and characterized by XRD, AFM, XPS, Raman, DRS and photoactivity test for methyl orange decolorization. Photoactivity of CeO2 – rutile TiO2 coatings increase with increasing CeO2 content up to 5 wt% and further increase of CeO2 content leads to decrease of photoactivity. Improvements of photoactivity originate from close contact between CeO2 and rutile TiO2 particles which create numerous centers able to produce very reactive radical species. Besides, the close contact between the CeO2 and rutile TiO2 provides easier charge transfer facilitating the formation of electron/hole pairs that is a necessary step in the overall photocatalytic process.

abstract = "The spray pyrolysis is fast and simple method for deposition of CeO2 – rutile TiO2 coatings on stainless steel substrate. Besides, the close contact between the CeO2 and rutile TiO2 provides easier charge transfer facilitating the formation of electron/hole pairs that is a necessary step in the overall photocatalytic process.",

AB - The main aim of this work is characterization of atmospheric aerosol using 11 stage cascade impactor. The first investigation of size-segregated sub-urban aerosols from the continental part of the Balkan peninsula in 11 fractions in the range of 0.0085 < Dp < 16 μm was performed from March 2012 to December 2013. Aerosols were measured at the Zeleno Brdo observatory (ϕ = 44°48’; λ = 20°28′–243 m above sea level), the highest landmark on the eastern side of Belgrade. Zeleno Brdo is surrounded by wooded vegetation and comprises of both southern facing rural and north-west orientated urban areas. About 70% of total aerosols are fine particles, belonging especially to the PM0.53–1.06 fraction which is found to be more pronounced in winter period. In this work, we applied tests of probability function models for three distributions: normal, log-normal and three-parameter Weibull, by comparing expected and observed values. We found that these models offer the possibility to determine whether the dominant emission source was the vicinity or distance of the measuring point. Results of this test could be a significant supplement to existing multivariate mathematical models for source apportionment, providing accurate estimation of the origin of emission sources and offering information on their position relative to the investigated area (local, regional or remote). In addition, the dependence of particle concentrations for each fraction investigated versus meteorological parameters was determined.

AB - TiO2-CeO2 nanopowders were synthesised by a ball-milling process and then annealed at temperatures from 500 degrees to 800 degrees C. X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance spectra were used in combination with temperature programmed desorption to determine the structural and microstructural changes of nanopowders as a the function of annealing temperature. The results of the X-ray analysis showed that the weight fraction of the cerianite phase remained unchanged with a temperature rise of 600-700 degrees C, indicating that the phase changes occur only within TiO2. The TiO2-CeO2 nanopowder showed enhanced optical properties with a red shift after the thermal treatment. Photocatalytic studies revealed that the sample annealed at 600 degrees C showed higher photocatalytic activity than samples annealed at lower or higher temperatures in the degradation of the methyl orange. The activity test of all samples is in accordance with photoluminescence measurements, proportional to the concentrations of hydroxyl radicals at the photocatalyst surfaces.

AB - In this work we use chemical fingerprints as characteristics ratios of specific crustal elements Ca/Al, Fe/Al, K/Al, Mg/Al, Mn/Al, Ca/Fe, and Mg/Fe to investigate the long-range transport of volcanic aerosols from Iceland. Volcanic dust enters the atmosphere during suspension processes from Icelandic deserts, but mainly from the dust hot spots in remote areas in Iceland, and it is transmitted to the central Balkan area (Belgrade). For this purpose, backward trajectories from Belgrade (φ = 44°48′; λ = 20°28′) in 2012 and 2013, simultaneous with atmospheric aerosols measurements, were calculated by using the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. We found that about 17% of air masses passed over Icelandic territory and arrived to Balkan area. In almost all of these episodes ratios of some investigated elements in suburban aerosols of Balkan area corresponded to the ratios of elements investigated in surface soil of the Rangárvellir area – South Iceland in the vicinity of volcanoes. We identified several episodes, such as August 6–8, 2012; June 2–6, 2013; June 26–28, 2013; and September 18–20, 2013; with the characteristic ratios of the highest number of investigated elements in atmospheric aerosol of central Balkan corresponding to ratios from Icelandic soil material. This study provides evidence that Icelandic dust can travel long distances showing the importance of High Latitude Dust sources. © 2019 Đorđević, Tošić, Sakan, Petrović, Đuričić-Milanković, Finger and Dagsson-Waldhauserová.

AB - In this study, WO3 doped TiO2 powders were synthesized via sol-gel method combined with a hydrothermal process. The effect of sintering temperature on mesoporous structure and catalytic activities of these powders were investigated. The physical analysis via X-ray diffraction indicates that prepared samples are a mixture of anatase and rutile TiO2 phases. X-ray peak analysis is used to evaluate the crystallite size and lattice strain by the Williamson-Hall analysis. Considering all the reflections of the anatase phase the lattice strain ranging from c = 9.505 to c = 9.548 is calculated, suggesting that microstrain decreases when calcination temperature increases. N-2 adsorption-desorption analysis shows that the surface area and pore volume decrease with increasing temperature and that WOx-TiO2 powders primarily consist of mesopores. Sintering temperature induced a change in textural properties causing a systematic shift towards larger mesopores. Simultaneously, photoactivity in decolorization of methyl orange increases with increasing calcination temperature up to 700 degrees C, followed by significant decrease with its further increase.

AB - Nanocrystalline TiO2-CeO2 powders were synthesized from their TiO2 and CeO2 oxides using mechanical ball milling process. The response surface method is applied to identify optimal parameters for the synthesis of TiO2-CeO2 photocatalyst. Analysis of variance and main effect plot are used to determine the significant parameters and set the optimal level for each parameter. Regression analysis showed good agreement of experimental data with the second-order polynomial model with a coefficients of determination: R-2 = 0.991, R-Adj(2). = 0.940 and R-Pred(2). = 0.983. Under optimal experimental conditions of TiO2:CeO2 weight percentage ratio 71: 29, milling speed 200 rpm, and milling time 115 min the highest photodegradation efficiency was achieved. On the basis of the above statistical analysis, it was found that the band gap energy of TiO2-CeO2 nanoparticles decreases with the increase of the milling speed and milling time with constant TiO2:CeO2 weight percentage ratio. Obtained results suggest that mechanical ball milling process is a rapid, efficient and low energy consumption method to synthesize TiO2-CeO2 photocatalyst.

AB - We have measured trace element contents in suburban aerosols from six size fractions in the range of PM0.27-16 from a background station in Belgrade (Serbia). The distribution and concentration of elements were determined within each of the investigated Dp fractions with emphasis on the fine and coarse modes. Fine/coarse mode ratios of element can provide information regarding their anthropogenic or natural origin. Analysis of seasonal variations of element contents in fine and coarse mode show that Cd, Co, K, and V have higher concentrations in the fine mode during heating season, while Fe contents are lower. In the coarse mode, Cu and V have higher concentrations during the heating season, while Al, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Sb contents are lower. We also apply a distribution probability model (normal, log-normal, and three-parameter Weibull) as new approach to estimate the distances of emission sources that can contribute to pollutant contents in particulate matter of the investigated location.

AB - The results presented in this work demonstrate for the first time a distribution of elements in the spectral analysis of aerosols in the suburban continental Balkan Peninsula. Samples were collected in the suburban area of Belgrade (Serbia) in the period from March 2012 till December 2013. Results presented here are from long-term measurements of masses of size-segregated aerosols and macro- and microelements in the range of PM0.27-16. The following elements were analyzed: Al, Ag, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Ti, Tl, V, and Zn; levels of Be, Hg, and Se were under the detection limits in all samples. Average concentrations and time and seasonal variations of particulate matter (PM) as well as element contents and their percentage shares are given. The results showed the domination of particle content around the accumulation mode in the range of 0.53 LT Dp LT 1.06 mu m, but the fractional distribution of elements showed maximal average concentrations in different fractions depending on the origin of each element. Crustal elements (Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ti, etc.) dominated in coarse mode, while anthropogenic elements (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, etc.) were mainly distributed in fine mode fractions. Some elements, such are As and Ni, were detected in investigated aerosols only occasionally, while others, such as Ca, Fe, and Mg, were detected in all analyzed samples. The application of multivariate analysis (PCA) demonstrated the connection between the elements of similar origin, in fine fractions mainly of anthropogenic origin, while in coarse mode of crustal origin, indicating the resuspension with contribution of about 40%. The contents of some measured elements were compared with their contents in aerosols in some European suburban areas.

AB - This article presents the comparison of structural and fractal properties of nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) and TiO2 modified with tungstophosphoric acid (TiO2/HPW) and their impact on the photocatalytic degradation of hazardous water pollutants. TiO2 and TiO2/HPW samples were synthesized by a combined solgel and hydrothermal processing. The XRD analysis of pure TiO2 samples revealed that phase composition was mainly dependent on the calcination temperature, changing from amorphous TiO2 to crystalline anatase and rutile by increasing the temperature. On the other hand, the XRD of TiO2/HPW samples calcined at temperatures above 600 degrees C showed crystalline peaks associated to formation of WO3 and WO2.92 crystalline domains. The N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm and pore size distribution of TiO2/HPW samples detected the existence of mesoporous characteristic with very narrow bimodal pores in the mesoporous region. The structural heterogeneity of samples was analyzed by means of pore size distribution functions, while the variation in fractal dimension were determined from the nitrogen adsorption isotherms, using the modified Frenkel-Halsey-Hill method. The results demonstrate that the approach is capable of characterizing complex textures such as those present in the TiO2 and TiO2/HPW photocatalysts. Besides, the effect of calcinations condition on photocatalytic properties of the samples was also investigated. The highest efficiency with respect to methyl orange photodecomposition was observed for TiO2/HPW photocatalysts calcined at 700 degrees C.

AB - Pt-Ba-Al2O3 coatings were obtained by spray pyrolysis deposition on stainless steel foil. The XRD results showed that the coatings consisted from Ba carbonate and Pt (fcc) phases. SEM micrographs demonstrated that the coatings are smooth and compact. The XPS data confirmed that Ba and Pt are in close contact. Pt crystallite size is only slightly influenced by the order of Pt and Ba deposition and the dispersion of Pt is in the narrow range from 28 to 33% for all samples. Catalyst component deposition order affects NOx storage capacity. Simultaneous deposition of Ba and Pt on already formed Al2O3 substrate produces the most efficient catalyst. Pt deposited on top of the Ba layer results in slightly reduced NOx storage capacity, while deposition of Pt on the separated layer with Ba layer on top significantly reduces the ability for NOx storage.

abstract = "Pt-Ba-Al2O3 coatings were obtained by spray pyrolysis deposition on stainless steel foil. Pt deposited on top of the Ba layer results in slightly reduced NOx storage capacity, while deposition of Pt on the separated layer with Ba layer on top significantly reduces the ability for NOx storage.",

AB - Plasma electrolytic oxidation of titanium in 12-tungstosilicic acid solution was investigated as a model reaction. The influence of the process parameters (concentration of 12-tungstosilicic acid solution, current density, and time) on the selected process response (efficiency of the methyl orange photodecolorization on the TiO2/WO3 coatings) was studied. A mathematical model was developed using a second-order response surface model with a central composite design incorporating the above-mentioned process parameters. The statistical analysis of experimental data indicates that a concentration of 12-tungstosilicic acid solution; process time, interaction between concentration and process time, and interaction between concentration and quadratic of process time have a significant effect on the methyl orange photodecolorization. Besides, the results show that obtained data were adequately fitted into the second-order polynomial model, since the calculated model F value (39.28) is higher than the critical F value. The values of coefficient of determination (R-2 = 0.960) and adjusted coefficient of determination (R-Adj.(2) = 0.937) are close to 1, indicating a high correlation between the observed and the predicted values. This model can also be useful for setting an optimum value of the process parameters for achieving the maximum efficiency of the methyl orange photodecolorization. Under the optimum conditions established in the region of experimentation (C = 1.14 . 10(-3) M, j = 153 mA/cm(2), and t = 58.9 s), a 38.6% (test duration of 8 h) efficiency of the methyl orange photodecolorization is obtained.

AB - This paper provides the correlation between the catalytic activity and selectivity of catalysts with various loadings of heteropolyacids over bentonite in the vapour phase 2-propanol oxidation. The catalysts are characterised by energy dispersive spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimeter, ammonia temperature programmed desorption, infrared spectroscopy and a nitrogen adsorption/desorption method. Energy dispersive spectroscopy results have shown satisfactory agreement regarding chemical composition that corresponds to the desired content of heteropolyacids on bentonite. Thermal analysis confirmed the thermal stability of catalysts under the investigated region of oxidation reaction. NH3-TPD spectra demonstrated that all catalysts include two types of acidic sites: weak adsorption centres up to 390 K and a broad distribution of stronger acidic sites at higher temperatures. The catalysts were active in the vapour-phase conversion of 2-propanol to acetone in the temperature region of 343-553 K. An increase of HPW loading improves selectivity towards acetone formation.

AB - The desorption behavior of β-carotene from a bentonite adsorbent under microwave irradiation in isopropanol was studied as a function of temperature and different initial loading concentrations. A first-order, two-component, three-parameter model described the desorption kinetics with a coefficient of de-termination R2 > 0.9932, and the β-carotene desorption process under microwave irradiation was con-trolled by both rapid and slow desorption. The activation energies of β-carotene desorption for the rapid and slow desorption processes were 19.61 and 53.04 kJ mol-1, respectively. It was observed that the de-sorption equilibrium data fitted well to both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. The data obtained from the desorption-isotherm model were used to determine the thermodynamic parameters. The positive value of free energy indicates the non-spontaneity of β-carotene desorption. The change in entropy rela-tive to the enthalpy of desorption reveals that the reaction is physical in nature.
