AB - Ternary Al-Ag-Ga system at 200 degrees C was experimentally and thermodynamically assessed. Isothermal section was extrapolated using optimized thermodynamic parameters for constitutive binary systems. Microstructure and phase composition of the selected alloy samples were analyzed using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive spectrometry and x-ray powder diffraction technique. The obtained experimental results were found to be in a close agreement with the predicted phase equilibria. Hardness and electrical conductivity of the alloy samples from four vertical sections Al-Ag80Ga20, Al-Ag60Ga40, Ag-Al80Ga20 and Ag-Al60Ga40 of the ternary Al-Ag-Ga system at 200 degrees C were experimentally determined using Brinell method and eddy current measurements. Additionally, hardness of the individual phases present in the microstructure of the studied alloy samples was determined using Vickers microhardness test. Based on experimentally obtained results, isolines of Brinell hardness and electrical conductivity were calculated for the alloys from isothermal section of the ternary Al-Ag-Ga system at 200 degrees C.

AB - Phase diagram of the Ag-Ga-Zn ternary system was investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) methods. Experimentally obtained results were compared with the results of thermodynamic calculation of phase equilibria based on calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD) method and literature data. Phase transition temperatures of alloys with overall compositions along three selected vertical sections Ag-Ga50Zn50, Ga-Ag50Zn50 and Zn-Ag50Ga50 were measured by DTA. Liquidus temperatures were experimentally determined and compared with the results of thermodynamic calculations. Identification of coexisting phases in the samples equilibrated at 300 degrees C and 400 degrees C was carried out using SEM-EDS and XRD methods. Obtained results were compared with the calculated isothermal sections of the Ag-Ga-Zn ternary system at corresponding temperatures. Calculated liquidus projection and invariant equilibria of the Ag-Ga-Zn ternary system were presented.

AB - Phase diagram of the Ag-Bi-Ga ternary system was investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) methods. Experimentally obtained results were compared with the results of thermodynamic prediction of phase equilibria based on calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD) method. Phase transition temperatures of alloys with overall compositions along three selected vertical sections Ag-Bi50Ga50, Bi-Ag50Ga50 and Ga-Ag50Bi50 were measured by DTA. Liquidus temperatures were experimentally determined and compared with the results of thermodynamic calculation. Identification of coexisting phases in samples equilibrated at 200 degrees C was carried out using SEM-EDS and XRD methods. Obtained results were compared with the calculated isothermal section of the Ag-Bi-Ga ternary system at corresponding temperature. Calculated liquidus projection and invariant equilibria of the Ag-Bi-Ga ternary system were presented. The obtained values were found to be in a close agreement.

AB - Nanotechnologies are being spoken of as the driving force behind a new industrial revolution. Nanoscience has matured significantly during the last decade as it has transitioned from bench top science to applied technology. Presently, nanomaterials are used in a wide variety of commercial products such as electronic components, sports equipment, sun creams and biomedical applications. The size of nanoparticles allows them to interact strongly with biological structures, so they present potential human and environmental health risk. Nanometer size presents also a problem for separation, recovery, and reuse of the particulate matter. Therefore, industrial-scale manufacturing and use of nanomaterials could have strong impact on human health and the environment or the problematic of nanomaterials recycling. The catch-all term ''nanotechnology' is not sufficiently precise for risk governance and risk management purposes. The estimation of possible risks depends on a consideration of the life cycle of the material being produced, which involves understanding the processes and materials used in manufacture, the likely interactions between the product and individuals or the environment during its manufacture and useful life, and the methods used in its eventual disposal. From a risk-control point of view it will be necessary to systematically identify those critical issues, which should be looked at in more detail. Brief review of actual trends in nanomaterials environmental risks and recycling is given in this paper.

AB - A phase diagram of the Bi-Ge-Sb ternary system was investigated experimentally by differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) methods and theoretically by the CALPHAD method. The liquidus projection; invariant equilibria; and three vertical sections, Sb-Bi0.5Ge0.5, Ge-Bi0.5Sb0.5, and Bi-Ge0.5Sb0.5, as well as isothermal sections at 773 K and 373 K (500 A degrees C and 100 A degrees C), were predicted using optimized thermodynamic parameters for constitutive binary systems from the literature. In addition, phase transition temperatures of the selected samples with compositions along calculated isopleths were experimentally determined using DTA. Predicted isothermal sections at 773 K and 373 K (500 A degrees C and 100 A degrees C) were compared with the results of the SEM-EDS and XRD analysis from this work. In both cases, good agreement between the extrapolated phase diagram and experimental results was obtained. Alloys from the three studied vertical sections were additionally analyzed using the Brinell hardness test.

Experimentally obtained results were compared with the results of thermodynamic calculation of phase equilibria based on calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD) method and literature data. Phase transition temperatures of alloys with overall compositions along three selected vertical sections Cu-In0.5Ni0.5, Cu-In0.8Ni0.2 and x(In) = 0.4 were measured by DTA. Liquidus temperatures were experimentally determined and compared with the results of thermodynamic calculation. Identification of coexisting phases in samples equilibrated at 400 degrees C and 500 degrees C was carried out using SEM-EDS and XRD methods. Obtained results were compared with the calculated isothermal sections of the Cu-In-Ni ternary system at corresponding temperatures. Calculated liquidus projection and invariant equilibria of the Cu-In-Ni ternary system were presented.

AB - The results of calorimetric study of binary Al-Zn system done according to the Oelsen thermodynamic method are presented in this paper. Main thermodynamic properties, including activities, activity coefficients, partial/integral molar Gibbs excess, and mixing energies were determined at 1,000 K. Positive deviation from Raoult law was noticed, with minimal values of Delta G (M) about -3 kJ mol(-1) and maximal values of Delta G (E) about +2 kJ mol(-1). The energetics of mixing in liquid Al-Zn alloys has been analyzed through the study of concentration fluctuation in the long-wavelength limit, and weak affinity between Al and Zn atoms in the system was observed. Differential thermal analysis and light optic microscopy were applied in the frame of characterization of investigated binary alloys and phase diagram examination, and the results obtained were in accordance with available literature data.

AB - Nanocrystalline Ni-ferrite was synthesized by modified precipitation method in which soluble starch is used as dispersing agent and Na2CO 3 as a precipitating agent. NiSO4-6H2O and Fe(NO3)3-9H2O were used as precursors for nickel and ferric oxide, respectively. The obtained nanocrystalline Ni-ferrite was analysed and discussed through structural, compositional and magnetic characterization. Formation of pure NiFe2O4 phase with average crystallite size of 21 nm has been con rmed by X-ray di raction analysis (XRD). The determined phase composition was additionally supported by results of 57Fe Mössbauer phase (MS) analysis and material's nanocrystalline structure by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Thermomagnetic behaviour was studied up to 800 C. The obtained room temperature magnetic hysteresis loop, recorded by means of a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), exhibits characteristic "S" shape of the soft magnetic material with the measured coercivity of about 10 kA/m and the specific moment up to 40 Am2/kg.

AB - This paper presents comparative review of experimental and thermodynamic assessment of ternary Ag-Sb-Zn system. Isothermal section of the Ag-Sb-Zn system at 300 degrees C has been calculated by CALPHAD method using thermodynamic parameters from literature. Microstructural analysis of a number of alloys was carried out by scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy, whereas chemical composition of observed phases was analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Hardness of selected alloys from four vertical sections was determined using Brinell hardness test and additionally by micro Vickers hardness test. Electrical conductivity of a number of alloys in the ternary Ag-Sb-Zn system was experimentally determined. Good overall agreement between experimental and calculated values was obtained.

AB - High energy ball milling was used in order to improve dispersion of metal oxide in Ag-SnO2 electrical contact materials. The processed Ag-SnO2 (92:8) and Ag-SnO2In2O3 (87.8:9.30:2.9) powder mixtures were subsequently consolidated to bulk solid pieces by conventional powder metallurgy method. The characterization of the prepared samples included microstructural analysis by XRD and SEM, as well as measurements of physical properties such as density, hardness and electrical conductivity. The results of X-Ray analysis point to reduction of crystallite size after milling of about ten times. Microstructures of sintered Ag-SnO2 and Ag-SnO2 In2O3 materials display very fine dispersion of the oxide components in silver matrix. Somewhat higher uniformity was obtained for Ag-SnO2 In2O3 material which was illustrated by results of SEM analysis and more consistent microhardness values. The obtained values of studied physical properties were found to be in accordance with observed higher dispersion of metal oxide particles and comparable to properties of commercial electrical contact materials of this type.

AB - Considering that improvement in the performance of Ag-SnO2 electrical contact materials can be realized by an increase in metal oxide dispersion, the influence of SnO2 nanoparticles and method of their introduction in silver matrix on microstructure and physical properties such as density, porosity, hardness and electrical conductivity were studied. The SnO2 nanoparticles were introduced by conventional powder mixing and by template method using filter paper and soluble starch as templates. All investigated samples were produced by subsequent pressing, sintering of the obtained powder mixtures and composites followed by mechanical treatment. Microstructural analysis revealed that the Ag-SnO2 samples prepared by template method exhibit finer dispersion than their conventionally prepared counterpart. After sintering and forging those samples were found to have higher hardness, density and lower porosity. As a result of greater dispersion hardening, the highest value of hardness was measured for the sample prepared using soluble starch as a template. The measured values of electrical conductivity of all investigated samples are comp arable with conductivities of Ag-SnO2 electrical contact materials of this type.

AB - Phase diagram of the Al-Cu-Sb ternary system was investigated experimentally by DTA and SEM-EDS methods and theoretically by CALPHAD method. The liquidus projection, invariant equilibria, three vertical sections: Sb-Al0.5Cu0.5, Al-Cu0.5Sb0.5 and Cu-Al0.5Sb0.5 as well as isothermal sections at 400 degrees C and 200 degrees C were predicted using COST MP0602 thermodynamic database. In addition, phase transition temperatures of the selected samples with compositions along calculated isopleths were experimentally determined using DTA. Experimentally obtained phase transition temperatures were compared with the results of thermodynamic calculation. Predicted isothermal sections at 400 degrees C and 200 degrees C were compared with the results of the SEM-EDS analysis from this work. In both cases, a good agreement between theoretical calculations and experimental results was obtained.

AB - Lead-free solders with copper are considered as a possible substitution for standard lead-tin solders. Ternary Bi-Cu-In system is a potential soldering material based on copper. For a more complete characterization of the ternary Bi-Cu-In system, alloys from the three vertical sections were investigated using microstructural analysis as well as by electrical conductivity and Brinell hardness measurements. The microstructures of the alloys were investigated at room temperature by application of scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectrometry and optical microscopy. Isolines of electrical conductivity and hardness for the entire Bi-Cu-In system were calculated using regression models. In addition, a thermodynamic assessment of the system has been carried out by calculation of the isothermal section at 25 A degrees C and description of the liquidus surface using the CALPHAD method. Experimental and analytical results were found to be in a good agreement.

AB - The results of calorimetric study and phase equilibria investigation of the Au-Ga system, in the Ga-rich region, are presented. Calorimetric study was done using Oelsen methodology and partial and integral molar thermodynamic quantities were determined-at a temperature of 873 K. Phase equilibria investigations were done experimentally - using differential thermal analysis, light optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and theoretically - using the CALPHAD method. Results agree well with available literature data.

abstract = "The results of calorimetric study and phase equilibria investigation of the Au-Ga system, in the Ga-rich region, are presented. Results agree well with available literature data.",
