AB - Room temperature far infrared reflectivity spectra of single phase spinel zinc-stannate thin films, prepared by rf magnetron sputtering on a glass substrate, and bulk sintered samples were measured. The sintered samples were obtained by mechanical activation of starting ZnO and SnO2 powders for 10 min followed by sintering at 1300 °C for 2 h. The reflectivity diagrams obtained for bulk samples were numerically analyzed using the four-parameter model of coupled oscillators. The optical parameters were determined for six observed ionic oscillators belonging to the spinel structure and two additional oscillators originating from the sintering procedure resulting from pores and grain boundaries. The reflectivity diagrams obtained for thin film samples were analyzed using the four-parameter model for optical phonons with a standard optical multi-layer technique.

AB - Far infrared reflection spectra of NiO polycrystals sintered at 1100 °C for various times (30–240 min) were measured at room temperature using a FTIR Spectrometer—Brucker 113V. The measured spectra depended on the sintering time due to differences in the microstructural morphology of the material and were compared with the NiO single crystal reflectivity diagram. Numerical analyses of the experimental spectra were performed using Kramers-Kronig analysis, a four-parameter model of coupled oscillators and the effective medium modeling theory. In the three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory we assumed the presence of pores, intergranular material and crystalline grains. The intergranular material and crystalline grains were defined as single and coupled ionic oscillators.

AB - Single crystal samples of lead telluride doped with cerium were made using the Bridgman method. Far infrared reflectivity spectra in the temperature range from 10 to 300 K are presented. The experimental data were numerically analyzed using a fitting procedure based on the plasmon–phonon interaction model and optical parameters were determined. Two additional local modes were observed at about 138 and 337 cm−1. The origin of these local vibrational impurity modes was discussed.

AB - Far-infrared reflection spectra of sintered α-MnSe were measured at room temperature. The measured spectrum had one pronounced peak in accordance with literature data and group theory estimation and one smaller peak resulting from the applied sintering procedure. The measured reflection spectrum was analyzed using Kramers–Kronig analysis and a three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory assuming the presence of a small amount of pores, dominant crystalline grains and intergranular material. In the model the crystalline grains were modeled as a single oscillator appropriate to the single crystal and the intergranular material was also defined as a single ionic oscillator.

AB - The thermal diffusivity of thick film NTC layers based on a metal oxide powder mixture was measured at room temperature by the photoacoustic (PA) technique. The powder mixture was composed of MnO (60 percent), CoO (32 percent) and Fe2O3 (8 percent), which were ball milled to nanometer particle size. NTC layers of different thicknesses were made by sequentional screen‐printing followed by drying and co‐firing at 850, 900 and 1,000°C in a hybrid conveyor furnace. The experimental PA phase and amplitude diagrams were numerically analyzed and the thermal diffusivity and electron transport parameters were calculated. An increase of thermal diffusivity with sintering temperature was observed. The fractal structure model was in agreement with the experimental data for modulation frequencies in which the sample behaved as thermally thick.

AB - Single crystal samples of lead telluride doped with samarium were produced using the
Bridgman method. Far infrared reflectivity spectra in the temperature range 10 K - 300 K are
presented and numerically analyzed using a fitting procedure based on a modified plasmon phonon
interaction model. The optical parameters were determined and three local modes of
samarium were observed at about 167 cm-1, 227 cm-1 and 486 cm-1.

AB - The contribution of free carrier transport processes to the photoacoustic effect in doped AIVBVI compounds was investigated using the photoacoustic (PA) frequency modulated transmission technique as a valuable tool in the study of thermal and carrier transport processes in semiconductors. The PA signals were measured and analyzed as a function of the modulation frequency in a specially constructed PA cell. The multiparametric fitting procedure was used to obtain some thermal and electronic transport parameters of doped and pure AIVBVI compounds.

AB - Thermal diffusivity and electric transport properties of fourteen years old superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x pellets were obtained using the photoacoustic transmission technique and then compared with freshly made superconducting samples. The theoretical model for photoacoustic (PA) detection configuration is given. The measured amplitude and phase PA signals, as a function of the modulation frequency, were numerically analyzed. The thermal diffusivity, the coefficient of the carrier diffusion, optical absorption coefficient and the excess carrier lifetime were calculated. The thermal diffusivity of freshly produced samples decreased, after ageing, from about 1.3·10-6 to about 6.1·10-7 m2/s.

AB - Far infrared reflection spectra, at room and liquid nitrogen temperature, of PbTe single crystals doped with iron are presented. Plasma minima were observed at about 160 cm–1 and 180 cm–1 for room and liquid nitrogen temperature, respectively. Using the reflectivity diagrams and their minima the values of the hole concentrations and their mobility at both temperatures were calculated and compared with galvanomagnetic measurements. All these results indicated that when PbTe is doped with a small concentration of Fe, the hole concentration is reduced by one order of magnitude and the free carrier mobility is larger when compared to pure PbTe.

AB - The possibility of characterization of aluminium powders using a horizontal coherer has been considered. Al powders of known dimension were treated with a high frequency electromagnetic field or with a DC electric field, which were increased until a dielectric breakdown occurred. Using a multifunctional card PC-428 Electronic Design and a suitable interface between the coherer and PC, the activation time of the coherer was measured as a function of powder dimension and the distance between the coherer electrodes. It was also shown that the average dimension of powders of unknown size could be determined using the coherer.

AB - Far-infrared and infrared reflectivity measurements have been made on pure BaTiO3, BaTiO3 doped with 5 mol% LiF and (Ba,Ca,Pb)TiO3 at room temperature in the range between 50 and 1000 cm–1. A fitting procedure, based on a four-parameter model, and Kramers-Krönig analysis of the spectra were performed and the optical parameters of the observed ionic oscillators determined. Group theory analysis has been done and the number of experimentally observed active modes was compared with theoretical predictions. It was shown that the high frequency dielectric permittivity increases from 1.88 to 5.13 for pure BaTiO3 sintered at 1320 °C for 2 to 10 h, respectively. It is also shown that infrared optical reflectivity measurements could give useful results for boundary cases when it is difficult to distinguish if a sample has a cubic or tetragonal structure. Reflectivity data and its numerical analysis can also give information on the degree of the sintering process and density of the samples.

AB - The possibility of simultaneous determination of some thermal and transport properties of polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-x, using a photoacoustic (PA) method was investigated. Both the amplitude and phase PA signals were measured as a function of the modulation frequency of the laser beam. Thermal diffusivity, the coefficients of the carrier diffusion, the excess-carrier lifetime and optical absorption coefficient were calculated by fitting experimental spectra and theoretical photoacousic signals.

AB - Thermal, elastic and electronic transport properties of ion-modified silicon samples were investigated by a photoacoustic frequency transmission technique. The experimental photoacoustic data vs. the modulation frequency were measured and analyzed. The experimental results show a clear influence of the process of ion-modification to the photoacoustic signal.
The thermal, elastic and electronic transport parameters of ion-modified semiconductors were obtained by comparing the experimental and the theoretical photoacoustic signals, which provide an indicator of the degree of modification.

AB - A model was derived in order to study the dependence of the photoacoustic signal on the thermal, elastic and carrier
transport properties of two-layer samples. The various systems were considered: the conductor-semiconductor, the insulator-semiconductor and the semiconductor-semiconductor system. The semiconductor-semiconductor system is possible to take in consideration as a general configuration, where the other two are the special classes. In the following theoretical analysis, thermodiffusion, thermoelastic and electronic deformation contributions have been used in order to interpret the photoacoustic effect in a two-layer system.

AB - Anisotropy in the thermal properties in α SiO2 single crystals SC cut mode 1 and mode 2 was investigated using the photoacosutic (PA) frequency transmission technique. The PA amplitude and phase diagrams were measured and numerically analyzed. The obtained results for the thermal diffusivity for SC mod1 was 0.34×10-5 m2/s while it was 0.40×10-5 m2/s for mode 2. The differences in PA spectra for both SC cuts were larger compared with much smaller differences which were observed using infrared reflectivity spectra.

AB - Electron transport properties of single crystal and polycrystalline natural mineral galena (PbS) samples from the Trepča mine, Yugoslavia, were determined using the photoacoustic frequency transmission technique. Their thermal diffusivity (D T≈0.16 × 10−5 m2 s−1), the coefficient of diffusion (D between 0.15×10−2 0.16×10−2 m2 s−1) and lifetime of the excess carrier (τ≈35 μs and the front and rear recombination velocity (s g≈65.5 m s−1 and s b≈66.4 m s−1, respectively), were calculated by comparing the experimental results and the theoretical photoacoustic amplitude and phase signals. The lattice parameter obtained by X-ray work was a =5.936 Å. The free carrier concentration of these single-crystal samples was measured using the Hall method (N = 3×1018 cm−3). Measurements of the optical reflectivity of the same samples, as a function of wavelength, in the infrared and far infrared ranges, were performed. In the far infrared range a free electron plasma frequency was observed and numerically analyzed, using the least-squares fitting procedure. The values of optical parameters were calculated and the value of the free carrier concentration obtained by the Hall method was confirmed.

AB - Single crystal samples of lead telluride doped with cerium were made using the Bridgman technique. Single crystals could be easily cleaved parallel to the (002) plane. Room temperature far infrared reflectivity was measured on single crystal samples and a plasma minimum at about 180 cm(-1) and local modes of Ce were observed. A fitting procedure based on a modified four parameter model of plasmon - phonon interaction, was used to determine the values of optical parameters. Carrier concentration and their mobility were measured at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures.

AB - The thermal diffusivity and some electronic transport properties of semiconducting ore mineral marmatite (ZnS:Fe) from the Trepča mine (Yugoslavia) were determined using a photoacoustic method with a transmission detection configuration. Thermal diffusivity, coefficient of carrier diffusion, the excess carrier lifetime, and the rear and front surface recombination velocities were calculated by fitting experimental spectra and theoretical photoacoustic amplitude and phase signals. The results obtained by optical transmission and reflectivity measurements were used to compare the determined values of the optical absorption coefficient using photoacoustic (PA) and optical methods. The mobility of the photogenerated free carrier holes of single crystal marmatite was calculated, for the first time, to be μp ∼ 428 cm2/Vs.

AB - Anisotropy in the thermal and electronic properties for two directions of a thermal wave propagation in GeSe2 single crystal was investigated using the photoacoustic frequency transmission technique. First, the electric field of an incident polarized light beam was adjusted to be perpendicular to the "c" axis (El⊥c), and then parallel to it (El//c) . It is shown that there is an obvious difference in the PA amplitude and phase spectra of the same sample, for cases when El//c and El⊥c axis. The results for thermal diffusivity DT obtained by fitting procedure for these two orientations of the electric field with regard to the "c" axis, are calculated: DT//=1.1×10-2 and DT⊥=1.7×10-3 cm2/s, e.g. their ratio is 6.6. The electronic transport parameters are also given: the carrier ambipolar diffusion coefficient D//=1.5 cm2/s and D⊥=2.5 cm2/s.

AB - Far infrared and mid-infrared reflectivity measurements have been made of lead titanate zirconate (PLZT) ceramics at room temperature in the frequency range 40–1500 cm-1. Kramers-Krönig analysis and a fitting procedure based on a four-parameter model of the spectrum, determined the infrared active transverse and longitudinal optical modes and their damping factors. Group theory analysis has been done and the number of experimentally observed infrared active modes was compared with the theoretical prediction. Three ionic oscillators for a cubic perovskite Pm3m structure should exist, but four ionic oscillators for the PLZT polycrystalline sample were observed. This excluded the possibility that the sample could have a cubic lattice and confirmed that the tetragonal structure was present at room temperature. X-ray analysis of the PLZT sample was performed and the results were compared with infrared spectroscopy work. It was concluded that infrared optical reflectivity measurements, as a non-destructive method, can give more reliable results at the boundary cases when it is very difficult to distinguish if a material has either a cubic or tetragonal lattice structure.

AB - A novel, very simple, eddy current method for measuring the electrical conductivity of nonferromagnetic conductors is described. This method is relative, i.e., we measure the ratio of conductivities of two samples of the same shape and size (this shape and size may be arbitrary). For one of them, conductivity is known, this is the reference sample, whereas the conductivity of the other is unknown and it is to be determined. Consequently, in this method it is necessary to have a reference sample of known conductivity. On the other hand, in this method no other calibration is necessary; the ratio of two conductivities we obtain directly as the ratio of two frequencies, without any calibration. The principle of this method is as follows: It turns out, based on Maxwell’s equations, that if we have a coil through which a sinusoidal current of an angular frequency ω flows and in whose magnetic field a given conductive, nonferromagnetic sample is placed, the effective inductance (i.e., the ratio of the reactive part of the impedance to the frequency ω) depends on ω and on the conductivity of the sample σ only through their product ωσ. Therefore, if it is found that with a sample of conductivity σ 1 at frequency ω1 the effective inductance is equal to that of a sample with conductivity σ 2 and frequency ω2 (the samples being of the same shape and size, both nonferromagnetic, and both placed in the same position relative to the coil), this means that equality ω1σ1=ω2σ2 is valid. Hence, if σ1 is known and σ2 is unknown, σ2 can be calculated.
