AB - Earth-abundant, cheap and non-toxic zinc-based coordination compounds are drawing research attention as promising candidates for various applications, such as photoluminescent materials and anticancer agents. In this paper we report six zinc complexes (1-3-NO3 and 1-3-Cl) with pyridyl-based thiazolyl-hydrazone ligands, which differ in the nature of substituents at the ligands' periphery, anion type, and geometry around the metal ion. The complexes were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis, as well as IR and NMR spectroscopy. The symmetrical complexes 2-Cl and 3-Cl, where zinc atoms are located at a two-fold axis, do not exhibit photophysical properties, unlike their asymmetrical analogs 2-NO3 and 3-NO3 with the same complex cation. Asymmetrical pentacoordinated 1-Cl and hexacoordinated 1-NO3 complexes exhibit photophysical properties. An admixture of allowed intra-ligand (1IL) and chloro (X)-to-ligand charge-transfer (1XLCT) electronic transitions is responsible for the fluorescence of the 1-Cl complex. The origin of the emission of the 1-NO3 complex is ascribed to an admixture of 3IL and ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (3LLCT) forbidden electronic transitions, while for 3-NO3 most electronic excitations are of LLCT character. The thermal stability of the complexes is in accord with the strength of respective intermolecular interactions. The antiproliferative activity of the complexes was in the nanomolar range on some of the investigated cancer cell lines. Contrary to the increase of antiproliferative activity of the complexes in comparison to the free ligands in cancer cell lines, an acute toxicity determined in the brine shrimp assay follows the opposite trend. The overall results suggest that Zn(ii) thiazoyl-hydrazone complexes have considerable potential as multifunctional materials.

AB - Room temperature far infrared reflectivity spectra of single phase spinel zinc-stannate thin films, prepared by rf magnetron sputtering on a glass substrate, and bulk sintered samples were measured. The sintered samples were obtained by mechanical activation of starting ZnO and SnO2 powders for 10 min followed by sintering at 1300 °C for 2 h. The reflectivity diagrams obtained for bulk samples were numerically analyzed using the four-parameter model of coupled oscillators. The optical parameters were determined for six observed ionic oscillators belonging to the spinel structure and two additional oscillators originating from the sintering procedure resulting from pores and grain boundaries. The reflectivity diagrams obtained for thin film samples were analyzed using the four-parameter model for optical phonons with a standard optical multi-layer technique.

AB - Far infrared reflection spectra of NiO polycrystals sintered at 1100 °C for various times (30–240 min) were measured at room temperature using a FTIR Spectrometer—Brucker 113V. The measured spectra depended on the sintering time due to differences in the microstructural morphology of the material and were compared with the NiO single crystal reflectivity diagram. Numerical analyses of the experimental spectra were performed using Kramers-Kronig analysis, a four-parameter model of coupled oscillators and the effective medium modeling theory. In the three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory we assumed the presence of pores, intergranular material and crystalline grains. The intergranular material and crystalline grains were defined as single and coupled ionic oscillators.

The experimental data were numerically analyzed using a fitting procedure based on the plasmon–phonon interaction model and optical parameters were determined. Two additional local modes were observed at about 138 and 337 cm−1. The origin of these local vibrational impurity modes was discussed.

AB - The contribution of free carrier transport processes to the photoacoustic effect in doped AIVBVI compounds was investigated using the photoacoustic (PA) frequency modulated transmission technique as a valuable tool in the study of thermal and carrier transport processes in semiconductors. The PA signals were measured and analyzed as a function of the modulation frequency in a specially constructed PA cell. The multiparametric fitting procedure was used to obtain some thermal and electronic transport parameters of doped and pure AIVBVI compounds.

AB - Far infrared reflection spectra, at room and liquid nitrogen temperature, of PbTe single crystals doped with iron are presented. Plasma minima were observed at about 160 cm–1 and 180 cm–1 for room and liquid nitrogen temperature, respectively. Using the reflectivity diagrams and their minima the values of the hole concentrations and their mobility at both temperatures were calculated and compared with galvanomagnetic measurements. All these results indicated that when PbTe is doped with a small concentration of Fe, the hole concentration is reduced by one order of magnitude and the free carrier mobility is larger when compared to pure PbTe.

AB - Anisotropy in the thermal properties in α SiO2 single crystals SC cut mode 1 and mode 2 was investigated using the photoacosutic (PA) frequency transmission technique. The PA amplitude and phase diagrams were measured and numerically analyzed. The obtained results for the thermal diffusivity for SC mod1 was 0.34×10-5 m2/s while it was 0.40×10-5 m2/s for mode 2. The differences in PA spectra for both SC cuts were larger compared with much smaller differences which were observed using infrared reflectivity spectra.

AB - Electron transport properties of single crystal and polycrystalline natural mineral galena (PbS) samples from the Trepča mine, Yugoslavia, were determined using the photoacoustic frequency transmission technique. Their thermal diffusivity (D T≈0.16 × 10−5 m2 s−1), the coefficient of diffusion (D between 0.15×10−2 0.16×10−2 m2 s−1) and lifetime of the excess carrier (τ≈35 μs and the front and rear recombination velocity (s g≈65.5 m s−1 and s b≈66.4 m s−1, respectively), were calculated by comparing the experimental results and the theoretical photoacoustic amplitude and phase signals. The lattice parameter obtained by X-ray work was a =5.936 Å. The free carrier concentration of these single-crystal samples was measured using the Hall method (N = 3×1018 cm−3). Measurements of the optical reflectivity of the same samples, as a function of wavelength, in the infrared and far infrared ranges, were performed. In the far infrared range a free electron plasma frequency was observed and numerically analyzed, using the least-squares fitting procedure. The values of optical parameters were calculated and the value of the free carrier concentration obtained by the Hall method was confirmed.

AB - The thermal diffusivity and some electronic transport properties of semiconducting ore mineral marmatite (ZnS:Fe) from the Trepča mine (Yugoslavia) were determined using a photoacoustic method with a transmission detection configuration. Thermal diffusivity, coefficient of carrier diffusion, the excess carrier lifetime, and the rear and front surface recombination velocities were calculated by fitting experimental spectra and theoretical photoacoustic amplitude and phase signals. The results obtained by optical transmission and reflectivity measurements were used to compare the determined values of the optical absorption coefficient using photoacoustic (PA) and optical methods. The mobility of the photogenerated free carrier holes of single crystal marmatite was calculated, for the first time, to be μp ∼ 428 cm2/Vs.

AB - Photoacoustic properties of amorphous Fe81B13Si4C2 ribbons were investigated. The amplitude and phase photoacoustic spectra were measured as a function of the modulation frequency of an He–Ne laser beam. Thermal diffusivity was determined by comparison of obtained experimental results and calculated theoretical photoacoustic spectra for a non-annealed Fe81B13Si4C2 sample and an Fe81B13Si4C2 sample annealed at 600 °C.
