AB  - In this paper, the state of an archaeological artefact (iron nail) originating from the Studenica Monastery (Serbia) has been presented as well as the possibility of laser cleaning its corrosion layers. To determine the presence of cracks and other defects in the sample, the digital radiographic method was used. The composition of the artefact was analysed by X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) and energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX). The corrosion products were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Pho- toelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Raman Spectroscopy, and EDX microanalysis. The Nd:YAG laser was used for corrosion cleaning. The morphological modification of the surfaces cleaned by laser was analysed with optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The test results showed that the cleaning of thick corro- sion deposits with a laser is difficult and very expensive. Therefore, it is necessary to combine mechanical or chemical methods with lasers.

AB  - Reuse and/or recycling of spent adsorbents is taking a central role in modern thinking and catalyzed carbonization is the way forward. Herein we explore the carbonization of adsorbed acetamiprid, in an inert atmosphere, as a way of recycling and producing nitrogen-rich carbon material for potential use in supercapacitors. Added value material and the reuse of the adsorbent were achieved by carbonization at 700 °C under argon. The formation of a nitrogen-doped carbon layer as an active material on the adsorbent, bonded through a C-Si linkage, has been conclusively verified through elemental composition quantification using XPS and EDX measurements. Two-stage catalytic decomposition and condensation of the adsorbed pesticide is followed by TGA and TPD-MS. Attained carbon-based materials give stable Faradaic capacitance with a slight dependency on the number of adsorbing cycles. Capacitance calculated with respect to the adlayer carbon material reaches values as high as 610 F g−1. Galvanostatic Charge/Discharge measurement confirmed the stability of explored materials with a slight increase in capacitance over 1000 cycles. The presented results envisage electroactive materials preparation from environmental pollutants, adding value to spent adsorbents.

AB  - Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has emerged as one of the most promising materials for
flexible functional devices. One-step fabrication of LIG offers advantages such as low cost,
patterning of desired geometries, and high sensitivity. However, previous attempts to obtain
LIG on elastomeric substrates have been unsuccessful, limiting its potential for use in
stretchable electronics. In this study, we propose using a substrate composed of
polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with a low molecular weight
as a platform for manufacturing LIG. A series of PDMS/PEO materials with varying
concentrations of PEO (1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt.%) were prepared using a cast-based
approach, starting from divinyl-terminated-PDMS and poly(methyl-hydrogensiloxane). The
prepared PDMS/PEO/graphene composites were characterized using Raman spectroscopy,
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
analysis. FTIR analysis confirmed the structure of the prepared PDMS/PEO and
PDMS/PEO/graphene materials. The results demonstrated that the prepared PDMS/PEO
composites exhibited a higher degree of graphenization compared to pure PDMS networks.
SEM analysis revealed the formation of a porous graphene structure. Based on these findings,
the PDMS/PEO/graphene composites show promise for further investigation as electronic
device applications.

AB  - The objective of this study was to develop optimal laser parameters (resolution, power, and velocity) for the formation of graphene on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based materials using laser-induced graphene (LIG). A series of novel PDMS/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) materials with varying concentrations of PEG (30, 40, and 50 wt.%) was prepared through a blending approach. For comparison, pure PDMS was prepared using a casting method. To the best of our knowledge, the synthesis of PDMS/PEG materials and the direct laser graphenization (LIG) of PDMS/PEG materials have not been reported in the literature. Once the optimal laser parameters were established, the prepared PDMS/PEG/graphene composites were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrated that the addition of PEG led to an enhanced degree of graphenization compared to the pure PDMS sample, which did not induce graphene formation. Among the materials tested, the PDMS/PEG/graphene composite with 30 wt.% PEG in the PDMS matrix exhibited the optimal degree of graphenization. SEM analysis of the LIG on PDMS/PEG material revealed a porous network structure. With their improved properties, the developed PDMS/PEG/graphene composites hold promise as materials suitable for the production of flexible electronic devices.

AB  - The environmental application of the carbonized composites of the Zn-containing metal-organic framework MOF-5 and polyaniline (PANI) in its emeraldine salt and base forms (C-(MOF-5/PANI)) was investigated for the first time. Textural properties and particle size distributions revealed that composites are dominantly mesoporous and nanoscale in nature, while Raman spectroscopy revealed the ZnO phase beneath the carbon matrix. Adsorption of pesticide, dye, and metal cation on C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites in aqueous solutions was evaluated and compared with the behavior of the precursor components, carbonized MOF-5 (cMOF), and carbonized PANIs. A lower MOF-5 content in the precursor, a higher specific surface area, and the pore volume of the composites led to improved adsorption performance for acetamiprid (124 mg/g) and Methylene Blue (135 mg/g). The presence of O/N functional groups in composites is essential for the adsorption of nitrogen-rich pollutants through hydrogen bonding with an estimated monolayer capacity twice as high as that of cMOF. The proton exchange accompanying Cd2+ retention was associated with the Zn/Cd ion exchange, and the highest capacity (9.8 mg/g) was observed for the composite synthesized from the precursor with a high MOF-5 content. The multifunctionality of composites was evidenced in mixtures of pollutants where noticeably better performance for Cd2+ removal was found for the composite compared to cMOF. Competitive binding between three pollutants favored the adsorption of pesticide and dye, thereby hindering to some extent the ion exchange necessary for the removal of metal cations. The results emphasize the importance of the PANI form and MOF-5/PANI weight ratio in precursors for the development of surface, porosity, and active sites in C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites, thus guiding their environmental efficiency. The study also demonstrated that C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites retained studied pollutants much better than carbonized precursor PANIs and showed comparable or better adsorption ability than cMOF.

Spectral evidence of acetamiprid's thermal degradation products and mechanism

AB  - Herein we unequivocally identify the mechanism of zeolite-catalysed thermal degradation of pesticide, employing Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman and mass spectrometry following temperature decomposition (TPDe/MS). We demonstrate that Y zeolite can effectively adsorb a significant amount of acetamiprid both in a single trial (168 mg/g) and in 10 cycles (1249 mg/g) with intermittent thermal regeneration at 300 °C. Sectional vibrational analysis of acetamiprid two-stage thermal degradation is performed for pristine and supported pesticide. The acetamiprid Raman spectral changes appear at 200 °C, while partial carbonization occurs at 250 °C. The gradual disappearance of the FTIR bands of acetamiprid is seen up to 270 °C when two Raman signature bands for carbonised material emerged. The TPDe/MS profiles reveal the evolution of mass fragments - in the first step, cleavage of the C[sbnd]C bond occurs between the aromatic core of the molecule and its tail-end, followed by cleavage of the C[sbnd]N bond. The mechanism of adsorbed acetamiprid degradation follows the same step, at significantly lower temperatures, as the process is catalysed by the interaction of acetamiprid nitrogens and zeolite support. Reduced temperature degradation allows for a quick recovery process that leaves 65% efficacy after 10 cycles. After numerous cycles of recovery, a subsequent one-time heat treatment at 700 °C completely restores initial efficacy. The efficient adsorption, novel details on degradation mechanism and ease of regeneration procedure place the Y zeolite at the forefront of future all-encompassing environmental solutions.

AB  - Laser-induced graphene (LIG) possesses desirable properties for numerous applications. However, LIG formation on biocompatible substrates is needed to further augment the integration of LIG-based technologies into nanobiotechnology. Here, LIG formation on cross-linked sodium alginate is reported. The LIG is systematically investigated, providing a comprehensive understanding of the physicochemical characteristics of the material. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques confirm the successful generation of oxidized graphene on the surface of cross-linked sodium alginate. The influence of laser parameters and the amount of crosslinker incorporated into the alginate substrate is explored, revealing that lower laser speed, higher resolution, and increased CaCl2 content leads to LIG with lower electrical resistance. These findings could have significant implications for the fabrication of LIG on alginate with tailored conductive properties, but they could also play a guiding role for LIG formation on other biocompatible substrates.

AB  - A size-strain line-broadening analysis of the XRPD patterns and Raman spectra for two anatase/brookite (TiO2)-based nanocomposites with carbon (C) was carried out and the results compared with those of a similar sample free of carbon. The crystal structures and microstructures of anatase and brookite, as well as their relative abundance ratio, have been refined from XRPD data by the Rietveld method (the low amount of carbon is neglected). The XRPD size-strain analysis resulted in reliable structure and microstructure results for both anatase and brookite. The experimental Raman spectra of all the samples in the region 100-200 cm-1are dominated by a strong feature primarily composed of the most intense modes of anatase (Eg ) and brookite (A 1g ). The anatase crystallite sizes of 14-17 nm, estimated by XRPD, suggest the application of the phonon confinement model (PCM) for the analysis of the anatase Eg mode, whereas the relatively large brookite crystallite size (27-29 nm) does not imply the use of the PCM for the brookite A 1g mode. Superposition of the anatase Eg mode profile, calculated by the PCM, and the Lorentzian shape of the brookite A 1g mode provide an appropriate simulation of the change in the dominant Raman feature in the spectra of TiO2-based nanocomposites with carbon. Raman spectra measured in the high-frequency range (1000-2000 cm-1) provide information on carbon in the investigated nanocomposite materials. The results from field-emission scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and nitrogen physisorption measurements support the XRPD and Raman results.

AB  - Structural modification of different carbon-based nanomaterials is often necessary to improve their morphology and optical properties, particularly the incorporation of N-atoms in graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Here, a clean, simple, one-step, and eco-friendly method for N-doping of GQDs using gamma irradiation is reported. GQDs were irradiated in the presence of the different ethylenediamine (EDA) amounts (1 g, 5 g, and 10 g) and the highest % of N was detected in the presence of 10 g. N-doped GQDs emitted strong, blue photoluminescence (PL). Photoluminescence quantum yield was increased from 1.45, as obtained for non-irradiated dots, to 7.24% for those irradiated in the presence of 1 g of EDA. Modified GQDs were investigated as a PL probe for the detection of insecticide Carbofuran (2,2-Dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-7-yl methylcarbamate) and herbicide Amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole). The limit of detection was 5.4 μmol L−1 for Carbofuran. For the first time, Amitrole was detected by GQDs in a turn-off/turn-on mechanism using Pd(II) ions as a quenching agent. First, Pd(II) ions were quenched (turn-off) PL of GQDs, while after Amitrole addition, PL was recovered linearly with Amitrole concentration (turn-on). LOD was 2.03 μmol L−1. These results suggest that modified GQDs can be used as an efficient new material for Carbofuran and Amitrole detection. Furthermore, the phototoxicity of dots was investigated on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. When bacterial cells were exposed to different GQD concentrations and illuminated with light of 470 nm wavelength, the toxic effects were not observed.

AB  - Here, we propose a novel, electrochemical preparation of in situ N-doped alginate-based carbon precursors with monodispersed zinc ions. Obtained carbons were evaluated by spectroscopic (FTIR, Raman and XPS), textural (N2 physisorption), microscopic (TEM) and elemental (SEM-EDS) descriptors to establish their distinctive fea- tures originating from different synthetic procedures. Carbons characteristics were assessed in view of several carbonization temperatures applied for their preparation from alginate precursors, and individual and joint effect of zinc and nitrogen on the precursor. Obtained Zn monodispersion, emphasizes the significance of electro- chemical preparation, allowing increasing temperature to induce changes from its ionic form to carbonate and oxide, while at 800 ◦C ZnO further reduces and evaporates. Since homogeneously dispersed Zn species acts as porosity evolving agent during carbonization, a substantial surface area is developed, in the range 718–1056 m2 g

Indigo Carmine in a Food Dye: Spectroscopic Characterization and Determining Its Micro-Concentration through the Clock Reaction

AB  - Indigo carmine is a commonly used industrial blue dye. To determine its concentration in a commercially available food dye composed of a mixture of indigo carmine and D-glucose, this paper characterizes it through (ATR, KBr) FTIR micro-Raman as well as UV/Vis and clock: Briggs–Rauscher (BR) oscillatory reaction methods. The indigo carmine was detected in the bulk food dye only by applying micro-Raman spectroscopy, indicating a low percentage of the indigo carmine present. This research provides an improvement in the deviations from the experimental Raman spectrum as calculated by the B97D/cc-pVTZ level of theory one, resulting in a better geometrical optimization of the indigo carmine molecule compared to data within the literature. The analytical curves used to determine indigo carmine concentrations (and quantities) in an aqueous solution of food dye were applied by means of UV/Vis and BR methods. BR yielded significantly better analytical parameters: 100 times lower LOD and LOQ compared to commonly used UV/Vis. The remarkable sensitivity of the BR reaction towards indigo carmine suggests that not only does indigo carmine react in an oscillatory reaction but also its decomposition products, meaning that the multiple oxidation reactions have an important role in the BR’s indigo carmine mechanism. The novelty of this research is the investigation of indigo carmine using a clock BR reaction, opening new possibilities to determine indigo carmine in other complex samples (pharmaceutical, food, etc.).

AB  - Laser induced graphenization (LIG) of polymer materials has recognized as the most promising method for fabrication of flexible electronic devices. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is suitable elastomeric materials for flexible electronics devices fabrication due to outstanding mechanical and optical properties. Namely, the low carbon content and the lacking aromatic structures in PDMS material limit the graphenization process resulting in limited conduction properties. The aim of this study was the graphenization of PDMS and PDMS-based materials by CO2 laser radiation. We prepared pure PDMS elastomer, PDMS/ethylene glycol and PDMS/Triton composite materials by using 20 wt. % of ethylene glycol or Triton in PDMS matrix. Indeed, up to now the evidence of graphenization of these PDMS-based materials has never been observed. PDMS elastomer was prepared by hydrosilylation reaction, while composite materials by blending method. The prepared PDMS-based materials were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results showed that surfaces of pure PDMS elastomer and PDMS/ethylene glycol composite cannot be graphenized by direct laser writing. However, by adding Triton as aromatic and carbon sources into the PDMS matrix it is possible to improve the graphenization of PDMS based materials and this material is good candidate for fabrication of flexible electrodes.

AB  - Microwave assisted synthesis of polyaniline modified by pullulan (PANI/Pull) composite was
performed by aniline oxidation with potassium iodate. The PANI/Pull composite was characterized
using ATR-FTIR technique. FTIR spectra confirm presence of both components in PANI/Pull
composite. Antimicrobial evaluation of PANI/Pull material performed by using a qualitative disk
diffusion method on Candida albicans (C. albicans) culture showed very high sensitivity to
PANI/Pull composite. Observed FTIR and antifungal activity represent a promising results especially
for potential biomedical applications of PANI/Pull composite.

AB  - Considering a growing demand for medicinal/cosmetic products with natural actives, this study focuses on the low-energy nanoemulsions (LE-NEs) prepared via the Phase inversion composition (PIC) method at room temperature as potential carriers for natural oil. Four different red raspberry seed oils (ROs) were tested, as follows: cold-pressed vs. CO2-extracted, organic vs. non-organic, refined vs. unrefined. The oil phase was optimized with Tocopheryl acetate and Isostearyl isostearate, while water phase was adjusted with either glycerol or an antioxidant hydro-glycolic extract. This study has used a combined approach to formulation development, employing both conventional methods (pseudo-ternary phase diagram − PTPD, electrical conductivity, particle size measurements, microscopical analysis, and rheological measurements) and the methods novel to this area, such as textural analysis and Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy has detected fine differences in chemical composition among ROs, and it detected the interactions within nanoemulsions. It was shown that the cold-pressed, unrefined, organic grade oil (RO2) with 6.62% saturated fatty acids and 92.25% unsaturated fatty acids, was optimal for the LE-NEs. Textural analysis confirmed the existence of cubic gel-like phase as a crucial step in the formation of stable RO2-loaded LE-NEs, with droplets in the narrow nano-range (125 to 135 nm; PDI ≤ 0.1). The DPPH test in methanol and ABTS in aqueous medium have revealed a synergistic free radical scavenging effect between lipophilic and hydrophilic antioxidants in LE-NEs. The nanoemulsion carrier has improved the biological effect of raw materials on HeLa cervical adenocarcinoma cells, while exhibiting good safety profile, as confirmed on MRC-5 normal human lung fibroblasts. Overall, this study has shown that low-energy nanoemulsions present very promising carriers for topical delivery of natural bioactives. Raman spectroscopy and textural analysis have proven to be a useful addition to the arsenal of methods used in the formulation and characterization of nanoemulsion systems.

AB  - Biliverdin (BV), a product of heme catabolism, is known to interact with transition metals, but the details of such interactions under physiological conditions are scarce. Herein, we examined coordinate/redox interactions of BV with Cu2+ in phosphate buffer at pH 7.4, using spectrophotometry, HESI-MS, Raman spectroscopy, 1 H NMR, EPR, fluorimetry, and electrochemical methods. BV formed a stable coordination complex with copper in 1 : 1 stoichiometry. The structure of BV was more planar and energetically stable in the complex. The complex showed strong paramagnetic effects that were attributed to an unpaired delocalized e−. The delocalized electron may come from BV or Cu2+, so the complex is formally composed either of BV radical cation and Cu1+ or of BV radical anion and Cu3+. The complex underwent oxidation only in the presence of both O2 and an excess of Cu2+, or a strong oxidizing agent, and it was resistant to reducing agents. The biological effects of the stable BV metallocomplex containing a delocalized unpaired electron should be further examined, and may provide an answer to the long-standing question of high energy investment in the catabolism of BV, which represents a relatively harmless molecule per se.

The complex underwent oxidation only in the presence of both O2 and an excess of Cu2+, or a strong oxidizing agent, and it was resistant to reducing agents. The biological effects of the stable BV metallocomplex containing a delocalized unpaired electron should be further examined, and may provide an answer to the long-standing question of high energy investment in the catabolism of BV, which represents a relatively harmless molecule per se.",

AB  - The synergistic effects between two Keggin-type heteropoly acids (HPAs) and carbon surface were examined and elucidated. An improved high rate capability (and potential high capacitor electrode for supercapacitors) of the hybrid materials, obtained by anchoring of α-dodecamolybdophosphoric (MoPA), α-dodecatungstophosphoric (WPA), and their mixture to activated carbon (AC), was achieved through the different mechanism of interaction. In order to elaborate this, a detailed analysis of AC-HPA composites has been performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), micro Raman spectroscopy, and zeta potential measurements. The zeta potential measurements revealed positive charge of carbon surface thus indicating attractive interactions with negatively charged Keggin anion. The surface analysis has shown that WPA spontaneously reduces the carbon surface, while interaction with MoPA leads to its oxidation. As the consequence of the tailoring of the functional groups at carbon surface through HPAs’ action, the distortion of cyclic voltammograms (CVs) decreased in the following order: AC-MoPA, AC-MoPA-WPA, and AC-WPA. A prominent rectangular shape of AC-WPA, even at an extremely high scan rate of 400 mVs−1, was measured, which is rarely demonstrated for carbon-based composites. By applying the theory of electrode potentials, the HPA-AC synergistic effect was explained and discussed in terms of charge storage improvement of HPA-modified carbon.

Biliverdin-copper complex at the physiological pH

AB  - Biliverdin (BV) is a degradation product of heme catabolism, which is rapidly converted to bilirubin (BR) by BV reductase 1. Biliverdin and unconjugated BR, commonly named bile pigments, have important function in biochemical processes. The presence of copper and other biological and toxic transitional metals at significant concentrations in bile implies the possibility that metal complexes with bile pigments can be formed 2. Consequently, our interest was to study the complex of BV with copper in physiological conditions – phosphate buffer with pH 7.4. UV-Vis spectrophotometry was applied to investigate formation/degradation of complex of BV with copper ions and to check stoichiometry by titration, showing that BV interacted with Cu2+ in 1:1 stoichiometry. Mass spectroscopy analysis confirmed this – ion at m/z 643.36 was detected. The results of Raman spectroscopy of BV were in good agreement with previous reports 3. Comparing spectra of BV and BV-Cu complex, the following differences were observed: a new band at low wave number is emerged for the complex may be attributed to Cu-N bond vibration; the band which was shifted to lower energies implicates increased stability of BV in the complex; intensity changes imply a more planar structure of BV in the complex, while stronger bands in complex imply higher delocalization of π-electrons and consequently a higher stability of the BV structure. Pertinent to this, it has been proposed that complexes of BV model compounds with Cu2+ may show unusual electronic structures that exhibit a significant ligand radical character. 1H NMR spectrum of BV in phosphate buffer had a poor resolution of signals, which may originate from aggregation, but this was of little relevance here, since the addition of copper ions led to very strong effect - the complete loss of almost all lines. The loss of signals represents the result of strong paramagnetic effects that may come from an unpaired e- that is delocalized in pπ orbitalss of the ring/ligand influencing all protons in the complex. The EPR spectrum of Cu2+ (S = 1/2; I = 3/2) in phosphate buffer shows that Cu2+ is weakly coordinated in an axial symmetry with one gr line and four lines coming from hyperfine coupling along gs. The addition of BV in equimolar concentration led to the loss of Cu2+ signal. The remaining signal in the [BV]/[Cu2+] = 1 system was broad, and did not show hyperfine structure. The g-value of the isotropic signal of BV-Cu complex was significantly lower than the average g-value of Cu2+ in the phosphate buffer indicating delocalization of the spin away from the metal nucleus. Similar EPR signals have been
reported previously 4. Parallel-mode EPR showed no signal. Furthermore, the spectra were run over a wide field range and no half field lines were observed, either in parallel or in perpendicular mode. These results are consistent with S = 0 for the copper center. Further, redox properties of the complex were examined. BV showed a well-defined anodic peak. The [BV]/[Cu2+] = 2 system showed two additional oxidation peaks at much lower potentials than BV. The former potential corresponds to the oxidation of Cu1+, as we have shown previously 5. There was a slight consumption of O2 in [BV]/[Cu2+] = 1 system, which may be explained by traces of ‘free’ copper. However, in the presence of an excess of copper ([BV]/[Cu2+] = 0.5), the consumption of O2 was significant. This implies that ‘free’ Cu2+ reacts with the complex and ‘shuttles’ an e- to O2. The complex was susceptible to oxidizing agents but not to reducing agents. Considering the results obtained we conclude that, at physiological pH, BV builds a complex with copper ions in 1:1 stoichiometry. The formation of complex involves the rearrangement of electronic structure which provides increased energetic stability and strong paramagnetic effects. We believe that a complex with a highly delocalized unpaired e- and the formal BV•+-Cu1+ character best suites the outlined properties, but other structures of the complex cannot be completely ruled out. The presented results may shed new light on long-standing issues of BV chemistry and catalysis in biological systems.

AB  - Carbon materials, prepared by using different methods with ionic liquids, are compared as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Materials were synthesized through the hydrothermal carbonization of glucose and by using the same method in the presence of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate [bmim][MeSO3] as an additive. Another two carbon-based materials were prepared by using ionic-liquid-based methods: ionothermal carbonization of glucose using [bmim][MeSO3] as a recyclable medium for the carbonization reaction and by direct carbonization of the ionic liquid in a one-step method using [bmim][MeSO3] as the precursor for N- and S-doped porous carbon (Carb-IL). Characterization results showed the possibility of morphology and porosity control by using [bmim][MeSO3]. All materials were subsequently tested for the ORR in alkaline media. Carb-IL showed enhanced and stable electrocatalytic ORR activity, even in the presence of methanol, ethanol, and borohydride, opening the possibility for its application in fuel cells.

AB  - Heteropoly acid (HPA) was supported on BEA zeolite by optimized synthesis method yielding samples containing different amounts (20 to 50 wt%) of 12-phosphotungstic acid (HPW). The prepared supported HPW samples were subjected to different post-synthesis procedures including calcination and ultrasonication resulting in BEA-HPW (BPW) hybrid materials. These BPW samples were characterized using SEM, N-2-sorption and electrical conductivity measurements. They were subsequently used for the preparation of composites with carbonized polyaniline synthesized in the presence of 5-sulfosalicylic acid, and studied as electrode materials for phenols sensing in acidic, neutral and alkaline media. Linear dependence of current on p-nitrophenol concentration in acidic media was obtained enabling evaluation of limit of detection. Composite electrode gave response to p-nitrophenol presence in alkaline media as well, while no response was recorded in neutral media. The work demonstrates benefits of using novel composite based on BPW hybrid materials and carbonized polyaniline for sensing of phenols in aqueous environmental samples.

AB  - Carbon materials, prepared by using different methods with ionic liquids, are compared as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Materials were synthesized through the hydrothermal carbonization of glucose and by using the same method in the presence of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate [bmim][MeSO3] as an additive. Another two carbon-based materials were prepared by using ionic-liquid-based methods: ionothermal carbonization of glucose using [bmim][MeSO3] as a recyclable medium for the carbonization reaction and by direct carbonization of the ionic liquid in a one-step method using [bmim][MeSO3] as the precursor for N- and S-doped porous carbon (Carb-IL). Characterization results showed the possibility of morphology and porosity control by using [bmim][MeSO3]. All materials were subsequently tested for the ORR in alkaline media. Carb-IL showed enhanced and stable electrocatalytic ORR activity, even in the presence of methanol, ethanol, and borohydride, opening the possibility for its application in fuel cells.

AB  - Activated carbon was prepared using plane tree seed as a cheap and renewable raw material. The samples were prepared by carbonization under N-2 atmosphere up to 850 degrees C, and activation in CO2 atmosphere at different both temperatures (750 and 850 degrees C) and times of activation (0.3,1 and 2 h). The influence of activation parameters on physicochemical properties was studied by XRPD, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, N-2 physisorption, SEM and electrochemical methods. The pore structure was correlated to the specific capacitance and the amount of hydrogen stored, in alkaline, neutral and acidic electrolyte solution. The relationship of asymmetrical shape of CV curves with the porosity of samples has served to better understand some unclear issues related to the complex mechanism of charge storage. The sample activated at 850 degrees C for 2 h displayed the best behavior. At a high scan rate of 300 mV s(-1), its capacitance, amounted to similar to 26.8 mu F cm(-2) 19.69 mu F cm(-2) and 25.8 mu Fcm(-2) in KOH, Na2SO4, and H2SO4 solutions, respectively.

AB  - The objective of this study is the structural and morphological characterization of the Ag3PW12O40 salts (AgWPA) of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) obtained under different preparation conditions and testing of their acid catalytic activity in dehydration of ethanol. The structure, morphology and physicochemical characteristics were determined by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen physisorption at +/- 196 degrees C, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential thermal (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It is shown that the preparation process has a significant influence on the morphological properties of the obtained materials which may be explained by the supposed mechanism of the formation of nanocrystallite's aggregates with more or less epitaxial connection. Neutral AgWPA obtained by filtration from supernatant forms porous aggregates of a symmetric dodecahedral shape, having average sizes about 2 mu m. This sample shows higher specific area in comparison with the salt obtained by evaporation due to the higher micropore volume, while mesopore volumes are the same for both salts. Thus conversion of ethanol and selectivities of the main products, ethylene and diethyl ether, are almost the same and constant for both prepared salts, while their values are changed over the reaction time for the parent WPA acid.
