Aluminum has been known to exhibit widely different electrochemical properties in different aqueous electrolytes. Thus, OH- ions in strongly alkaline solutions reveal its strong affinity to water by dissolving its protective oxide film. The metal establishes a very negative electrode potential, undergoing violent corrosion resulting in the evolution of hydrogen and the formation of aluminate ions. In this communication, some experiments on the effect of activity promoting anions are presented and a model is forwarded for a possible explanation of the observed phenomena.
