Determining of Indigo Carmine (E132) in Candy
Abstract
Indigo carmine (E132) is an organic dye used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. It is commonly applied as a dye for food coloring in combination with d-glucose. Since this dye may be harmful, especially for children, this research aims to obtain an analytical curve by a UV/Vis spectroscopy to determine the unknown concentrations of indigo carmine in different samples. Additionally, the concentration of E132 was determined in a sample of hard candy, menthol strong, PIONIR. According to the maximum recommended intake of E132 being 0.5 g per kg, the obtained results suggest that consuming this candy is safe for children.
