A double plasma d.c. arc burning in a horizontal graphite tube in a magnetic field was developed as a light source for spectrochemical purposes. It was demonstrated experimentally that a prolongation of the residence time of the analyte particles in the plasma contributes to the detection of trace elements at very low concentrations. The influence of varying amounts of added NaCl and of a variable magnetic field on the line intensities of trace elements was investigated.
