The economic activity of plastics production and processing is officially classified into two branches of the industry – Production of Chemicals and Chemical Products (namely, the production of polymers, elastomers, synthetic and acrylic resins) and Production of Rubber and Plastic Products (namely, the production of plastic products). The distinct infrastructural nature of this industrial field is more significant to the Serbian economy than its nominal contribution even though the latter should not be underestimated since its annual turnover is over € 1 billion. A more detailed diagnostic assessment of the status accorded to plastics production and processing has not been done for almost two decades and therefore there is no knowledge about the present potential of this industrial field. It is very difficult to obtain information on the place and type of technology used for the production of some goods, the type and quantities of raw materials used, how much competition exists in the same or related production sectors, the nature and amount of import and export, etc. A comparative analysis of domestic and global market trends is missing and so is an expert forecast about the production and technological progress. It is easy to justify why this information is relevant to national and international players in the plastics business since the lack of a sophisticated database often limits the efficiency of commercialization of our own goods and services as well as the development activities. The previously stated details inspired The Association of Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Rubber and Non-metal Industry within Serbian Chamber of Commerce and The Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia to embark on a joint publication venture – preparing and printing a MONOGRAPH entitled: “PLASTICS PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING IN SERBIA” The MONOGRAPH contains texts providing a wealth of useful information to the branch, which are arranged into the following sections: (1) Production and processing of plastics worldwide and in the EU-27, with predictions of supply, demand, fields of application and technological progress, (2) Production and processing of plastics in the neighboring regions (Central, Southeast and Eastern Europe), with medium-term projections of demand growth, (3) The main directions of innovative activity by application sectors of plastic products (4) History and analysis of the current situation in the Serbian industry of plastics production and processing (5) Reached level of domestic demand with respect to more important polymers and groups of plastic products, (6) Production statistics and foreign trade of Serbia with respect to individual polymers and groups of plastic products (7) Factors determining the future of domestic production and consumption of polymers and plastic products with medium-term projections of demand growth. The second part of the MONOGRAPH includes a comprehensive Catalogue of plastics producers and processors in Serbia (hereinafter: the CATALOGUE) which lists, in a concise and clear manner, all relevant information on 185 enterprises which are engaged in plastics production and/or processing. The main criterion the authors used when selecting the enterprises listed in the CATALOGUE was the annual processed polymer volume of over 100 tpy. However, a few exceptions were made with intent to present the processors which have slightly lower volumes of processing but are of particular importance on the market in terms of whether they produce articles no one else produces or more sophisticated technical plastics. The listing of enterprises included in the CATALOGUE provides the basic data for establishing direct contact (address, phone, fax, e-mail, web address, name and surname of the owner and/or manager) and the latest available data on the number of employed persons. With every plastics processor the present processing technologies are noted down in addition to all important items from the production assortment. Alongside every participant the basic raw materials used in production and processing are noted down. In the case of polymer producers, production capacity is dimensioned and in the case of plastics processors, the annual volumes of processed polymers are noted down (in terms of average levels over the last years). Reached level of quality and other production and business functions management is noted down for the majority of participants together with ISO and other world recognised certificates which the enterprise has been awarded. Apart from the representation of enterprises, some further information, estimated as possibly significant or at least interesting for the future CATALOGUE users, was added. The comprehensiveness of laid out data was, quite expectedly, dependent on the readiness of enterprises to share them with the authors. All the above-mentioned information is turned into individual presentations of enterprises arranged alphabetically together with texts in Serbian and English side by side with an aim of creating a useful database for foreign users as well. Listing all the advantages of having such a comprehensive material to persons in any type of contact with the plastics industry is deemed unnecessary. Let us only mention the benefits of the data provided by the CATALOGUE which is, in a way, the key part of the MONOGRAPH. First and foremost, it helps domestic plastics manufacturers gain some insight into what other processors in the country are doing. Therefore, they are able to choose new production programmes more easily because they do not opt for something already covered by domestic supply and at the very least, they are provided with a solid foundation for analyzing the output market of some new development programme. The producers of raw materials and equipment can more easily identify a potential client among domestic plastics manufacturers. Trade companies, buyers of plastic end products or semi-finished plastic products will find the goods they demand or want to obtain more easily. State institutions get a better insight into a reached stage in the development of this production field in Serbia and its long-term growth potential. They are provided with the foundation for promoting the possibilities of Serbian plastics producers and processors abroad and for acting as intermediaries in bringing foreign partners that wish to cooperate with our factories. Foreign partners, already present on the Serbian market and some new ones, who are possibly interested, will get better insight into the domestic supply so that they can better place their products on our market as well as undertake common production and business ventures designed for meeting the demands of the domestic market and/or for export. We are convinced that the MONOGRAPH with the CATALOGUE meets the current demands of Serbia that the domestic industry of plastics production and processing should be properly prepared for the upcoming European integration process. On behalf of the co-editors we express our deep sense of gratitude to the authors of the thematic texts of the MONOGRAPH and to the team that gathered all necessary data, processed and prepared the CATALOGUE for printing and also to all enterprises and institutions that contributed to the release of this publication.en
