Determination of acid-activated bentonite affinity towards soybean oil pigments during the decolourization process

Abstract
Acid-activated bentonite clays partially or entirely remove pigments from oil by absorption in the process of its decolorization. However, in addition to pigments, they also remove other undesirable components such as metals soaps, phospholipids, primary and secondary oxidation products. The series of laboratory soybean oil decolourization at constant values (temperature time and mixing rate) and variable values of the process (quantity and type of acid activated bentonite) is presented. The influence of the acid activated bentonite quantity and type on its affinity toward soybean oil pigments in the decolourization process was studied. The sample obtained by activation of bentonite clay from RMU - Bogovina, with 4.5M HCl, has uniform distribution of pores at pore diameters, with the major part of mesopores and specific surface of 290 m2/g, which enables a high adsorption level for yellow and green pigments of soybean oil.
Kiselinski aktivirane bentonitne gline delimično ili potpuno adsorpciono uklanjaju pigmente iz ulja u procesu njegove dekolorizacije. Međutim, pored pigmenata uklanjanjaju i druge nepoželjne komponente, kao što su metali sapuni, fosfolipidi, primarni i sekundarni proizvodi oksidacije. U radu je prikazana serija laboratorijske dekolorizacije sojinog ulja pri nepromenljivim (temperatura, vreme i brzina mešanja) i promenljivim veličinama procesa (količina i vrsta kiselinski aktiviranog bentonita). Ispitivan je uticaj količine i vrste aktiviranog bentonita na njihov afinitet prema pigmentima sojinog ulja u procesu dekolorizacije. Uzorak dobijen aktivacijom bentonitne gline iz RMU, Bogovina, sa 4,5 M HCl, ima uniformnu raspodelu pora po prečnicima pora, sa najvećim udelom mezopora i specifičnom površinom od 290 m2/g, što mu obezbeđuje veliku moć adsorpcije prema žutim i zelenim pigmentima sojinog ulja.
