AB - A simple one-step microwave-assisted and temperature-controlled hydrothermal synthesis was applied to prepare a nanocrystalline RuO2 dispersion from an aqueous solution of RuCl3 for supercapacitive applications. The obtained RuO2 dispersions were subjected to dynamic light scattering in order to analyze the particle size distribution, whereas morphology and structural properties of the solid phase were investigated by using AFM, SEM, EDX, TEM, and XRD techniques. Ellipsoidally shaped 100-500 nm-sized compact grains, joined into highly ordered prismatic agglomerates, are observed. Two types of grains are observed: more regular ones consisting of spherical, amorphous particles of a few nanometers in size, and irregular ones made of partially crystalline 10-80 nm-sized particles. Consequently, the most dominant structure is 250-nm grains. The particles tend to join tightly across their crystalline domains, which appears responsible for the formation of prismatic shapes of several micrometers. This arraying causes high capacitive activity - specific capacitances of up to 800 Fg(-1) are registered, which negligibly depend on the charging/discharging rate. The synthesized material is of highly accessible internal structure, and is an excellent candidate for both low- and high-power applications.

AB - Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements were conducted and analyzed for a preliminary estimation of the stability of composite electrocatalysts based on Pt. The changes in CV currents of platinum nanoparticles supported on TiO2 were compared to the changes of those supported on commercial carbon. TiO2 was synthesized by sol-gel method and Pt was deposited from Pt colloidal dispersion synthesized by microwave-assisted polyol process. It was found that Pt component in both Pt/TiO2 and Pt/C behaves similarly with respect to stability and activity during the cycling. The loss in activity with cycling was linear and strongly depended on sweep rate, i.e., the relative loss is higher at lower sweep rates. The steady state activities for both electrocatalysts were reached at the level of 65 % of initial activity and required more than 100 voltammetric cycles.

AB - In this paper, we have analyzed parts of printed circuit board (PCB) and liquid crystal display (LCD) screens of mobile phones and computers, quantitative and qualitative chemical compositions of individual components, and complete PCBs were determined. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) methods were used to determine the temperatures of phase transformations, whereas qualitative and quantitative compositions of the samples were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) analyses. The microstructure of samples was studied by optical microscopy. Based on results of the analysis, a procedure for recycling PCBs is proposed. The emphasis was on the effects that can be achieved in the recycling process by extraction of some parts before the melting process. In addition, newly developed materials can be an adequate substitute for some of the dangerous and harmful materials, such as lead and arsenic are proposed, which is in accordance with the European Union (EU) Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances (RoHS) directive as well as some alternative materials for use in the electronics industry instead of gold and gold alloys.
