AB - Metals and metal oxides have subpar antibacterial activities compared to those of small-molecule antibiotics, yet there are hopes that with proper compositional and structural adjustments this gap might be bridged. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were mechanically activated and combined with particulate silver through simple reduction process elicited by UV irradiation and assisted with the ultrasound. The resulting powders in various combinations (Ag vs. no Ag, activated vs. non-activated) were characterized using a range of experimental techniques and assessed for their antibacterial activities. The preparation procedure presented in this work prevails over the disadvantages of many chemical routes, most critically by avoiding the use of toxic substances. The mechanical activation did not reduce the particle size or crystallinity of TiO2 nor did it consistently alter the bandgap, yet it enabled the doubling of the amount of silver incorporable into the material. Further, while both mechanical activation and the addition of silver in the amount not exceeding 0.5 wt% produced barely detectable structural changes in the material, they both augmented its antibacterial activity. The precursor TiO2 powder produced no inhibition zone against any of the four bacterial species tested, while the mechanical activation of TiO2 led to the formation of distinct inhibition zones against each of the four bacterial species tested. The addition of silver to activated TiO2 further widened the inhibition zones and it also imparted the antibacterial activity to non-activated TiO2. The boost in the antibacterial activity achieved by the short mechanical activation was of a similar magnitude as the boost obtained after the addition of silver. The antibacterial activity was not different for different species when no silver was added to the system. However, with the addition of silver, species selectivity was obtained, as the composites were more effective against the two Gram-negative species (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) than against the two Gram-positive ones (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis). The antibacterial activity increased with the addition of silver in the broth assay, but it was mediocre compared to that detected in the agar assay, attesting to the poor dispersability of the powders and their best performance when the bacterial cells migrate to the composite surface than vice versa. The findings of this study give hope that with appropriate microstructural or compositional alterations, the antibacterial activity of metal oxide powders and inorganic materials in general can be made comparable to that of small-molecule antibiotics.

AB - Lakes and reservoirs are the main water resources for household, irrigation, and industrial use. Hence, it is necessary to control water pollution and have reliable information on water quality, which refers to its suitability for a particular purpose. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of water for drinking and irrigation purposes from ten artificial lakes on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The physicochemical parameters were determined using standard analytical methods, whereas the optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma, ICP-OES, was used to determine the concentrations of 23 macro-, micro-, and trace elements in water. Health risk indices of drinking water and its suitability for irrigation purposes were evaluated. The results of physicochemical parameters, except for total organic matter, indicated that most samples were within the recommended values. Among analyzed elements, the concentration of Mg was elevated in the water of the lakes Srebrno and Prvonek. The results of health risk assessment clearly showed that there was no acute health risk (HQA < 1), whereas long-term risk (HQL) in the studied lakes was observed with respect to As (lakes Grlište and Srebrno), Mn (lakes Srebrno and Prvonek), Ni (Lake Vrutci), and Sr (Lake Grlište). The irrigation criteria indicated that the water from the examined lakes had satisfactory quality for this purpose, except for residual sodium carbonates (RSC). This criterion indicated low quality or unsuitability of the water in 7 lakes. The main outcomes provided valuable information on the suitability of water from the artificial lakes for intended uses.

AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepared powders as well as sintered ceramics were thoroughly examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300 °C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic.

AB - The biological activity of six structurally similar tetradentate Schiff base copper(II) complexes, namely [Cu(ethylenediamine-bis-acetylacetonate)] (CuAA) and five derivatives where two methyl groups are replaced by phenyl, (CuPP), CF3 (CuTT) or by mixed groups CH3/CF3 (CuAT), Ph/CF3 (CuPT), and Ph/CH3 (CuAP) has been investigated. The set of antioxidant assays was performed, and the results were expressed as IC50 and EC50 values. The series of complexes showed interesting bioactivity and were investigated for the determination of antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic activity. A significant antioxidant behavior was exhibited by complex CuAA, greater than Trolox in the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) assay. Antibacterial assay over Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogenic bacterial strains and some fungal pathogens were studied. Antiproliferative activity of complexes in two human tumor cell lines, breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7, colon adenocarcinoma LS-174, and normal fibroblast cells-MRC-5, examined the effect on cell cycle progression. The significant cytotoxic potential, comparable to cisplatin cytotoxicity, was determined in human breast cancer cell line-MCF-7 with IC50 values being 17.53–31.40 μM and human colon cancer cell line-LS-174 with IC50 values being 15.22–23.92 μM. All tested compounds showed nearly twice more selectivity toward cancer cell lines than normal cells. The interactions of complexes with human serum albumin (HSA), the most prominent protein in plasma, were investigated using spectroscopic fluorescence techniques. The complexes bind to human serum albumin at multiple sites (n = 0.2–1.9), displaying a moderate binding constant Ka = 4.1–12.4 × 104 M−1. The molecular docking experiment effectively showed complex binding to HSA and DNA molecular fragments.

AB - The main objective of this study is to determine the possibility of predicting the impact of land use and soil type on concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) and phthalates (PAEs) in soil based on an artificial neural network model (ANN). Qualitative analysis of HMs was performed with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES) and Direct Mercury Analyzer. Determination of PAEs was performed with gas chromatography (GC) coupled with a single quadrupole mass spectrometry (MS). An ANN, based on the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) iterative algorithm, for the prediction of HM and PAE concentrations, based on land use and soil type parameters, showed good prediction capabilities (the coefficient of determination (r(2)) values during the training cycle for HM concentration variables were 0.895, 0.927, 0.885, 0.813, 0.883, 0.917, 0.931, and 0.883, respectively, and for PAEs, the concentration variables were 0.950, 0.974, 0.958, 0.974, and 0.943, respectively). The results of this study indicate that HM and PAE concentrations, based on land use and soil type, can be predicted using ANN.

AB - This study aimed to investigate the impact of road and rail traffic on the soil through the analysisof the presence of heavy metals in soil samples collected next to a busy highway, local roads, andnext to an active railway line. Results showed that cars emitted higher levels of heavy metals thantrains. Soil samples near the highway had higher levels of Cu, Ni, and Hg. The values of thecalculated indices like geo-accumulation index, potential toxicity response index, ecological riskfactor, contamination factor, pollution load index, Nemerow’s pollution index, and degree ofcontamination confirm that the soil samples sampled near the highway are the most polluted andhighway have the greatest negative impact on the soil environment. These results suggest thatcontrolling car emissions through strict regulations and promoting public transportation couldeffectively reduce the heavy metal concentrations in soil, particularly from highway emissions.

AB - Background and Aims: In the global distribution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) forests play a key role due to the forest canopy effect. In this study, mountain beech forests were selected to identify the level and distribution of selected POPs.
Methods: Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography with an electron capture detector (GC–ECD). Analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was performed by gas chromatography with a mass spectrometry detector (GC–MS). The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed by liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC–DAD).
Results: The total ∑20OCP concentrations in the soil from mountain beech forests at a depth of 0 – 40 cm ranged from 24.46 μg kg −1 to 331.11 μg kg −1, and at a depth of 40 – 80 cm from 15.80 μg kg−1 to 247.12 μg kg −1. The mass concentration for ∑ 6PCB ranges from 9.21 to 95.28 μg kg−1 in the surface soil layer and from 8.07 to 66.56 μg kg −1 in the soil sub.layer. The total concentration of ∑7PBDE congeners measured in soil samples from mountain beech forests
across Europe was from 1.38 to 29.68 μg kg−1 in the surface soil layer and from 1.01 to 53.31 μg kg−1 in the soil sublayer. The total concentration of ∑ 16PAH varied from 271.52 to 1154.52 μg kg−1 in the surface soil layer and from 318.95 to 1052.54 μg kg −1 in the soil sublayer.
Conclusion: The results of this study can serve as an important basis for international, national, and regional measures of environmental protection of beech forests from POPs pollution.

AB - With the objective to quantify the Neogene extensional geodynamic drivers of the Peri Pannonian Realm s.l., a series of 1D basin models were carried out by integrating the available geological and geochemical data extracted from the landlocked Toplica Basin (central-southern Serbia; Serbo-Macedonian Unit). The modeling was conducted on four wells located immediately south of Jastrebac Mt., in the area of the Toplica Basin. The investigated southernmost point of the Peri Pannonian Ream s.l. (areas surrounding the basin, to the south of rivers Danube and Sava) underwent intense tectonically-driven subsidence episodes, which lasted from the Lower Miocene up to the Pliocene. The restored Neogene burial history (subsidence rates), paleotemperature, and calibrated paleo-heat fluxes (or changes in the ancient crustal or basal heat flow) indicated a two-staged crustal stretching of the wider Toplica area. The combined tectonic, i.e., thermal subsidence, resulted in a very high sedimentation rate, having an average ca. 300–400 m/Ma (Čučale unit). The intense tectonically-driven subsidence is consistent with the involvement of extensional processes, affecting the crustal and lithospheric layers of the retreating Adria/Dinarides, amplified by a distant Carpathian rollback stage. The regional extension led to the asymmetric opening and the formation of the Toplica Lower Miocene mesosaline to the freshwater lacustrine system. Higher participation of mixed microbiologically reworked/terrestrial organic matter incorporated in oil-prone Type II kerogen mainly characterized the investigated lacustrine sedimentary sequence. The latest Oligocene–earliest Neogene subsidence onset was characterized by elevated temperatures, affecting the early development of the oil window (ca. at 16 Ma). The 1D models also showed that the Lower Čučale unit achieved ca. 50% transformation ratio for the Type II organic matter. The two intra-Neogene extensional episodes suggested the existence of the Early Neogene “syn-rift” stage, followed by a thermal sagging. The Neogene continuous thinning of the overriding Serbo-Macedonian continental crust contributed to the “negative inversion” of the former pre-Neogene nappes. Therefore, Neogene tectonic reactivation induced contemporaneous subsidence, further allowing the extensional rise of the Jastrebac core complex.

AB - A size-strain line-broadening analysis of the XRPD patterns and Raman spectra for two anatase/brookite (TiO2)-based nanocomposites with carbon (C) was carried out and the results compared with those of a similar sample free of carbon. The crystal structures and microstructures of anatase and brookite, as well as their relative abundance ratio, have been refined from XRPD data by the Rietveld method (the low amount of carbon is neglected). The XRPD size-strain analysis resulted in reliable structure and microstructure results for both anatase and brookite. The experimental Raman spectra of all the samples in the region 100-200 cm-1are dominated by a strong feature primarily composed of the most intense modes of anatase (Eg ) and brookite (A 1g ). The anatase crystallite sizes of 14-17 nm, estimated by XRPD, suggest the application of the phonon confinement model (PCM) for the analysis of the anatase Eg mode, whereas the relatively large brookite crystallite size (27-29 nm) does not imply the use of the PCM for the brookite A 1g mode. Superposition of the anatase Eg mode profile, calculated by the PCM, and the Lorentzian shape of the brookite A 1g mode provide an appropriate simulation of the change in the dominant Raman feature in the spectra of TiO2-based nanocomposites with carbon. Raman spectra measured in the high-frequency range (1000-2000 cm-1) provide information on carbon in the investigated nanocomposite materials. The results from field-emission scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and nitrogen physisorption measurements support the XRPD and Raman results.

AB - In this study the ex-situ bioremediation of waste heavy residual oil fuel was examined.
Microbial consortium was isolated from the polluted site at Belgrade Heating Plants (Serbia) and was added to the projected biopile. The nutrients, aeration-periodic mixing was used during process. The biopile was inoculated and biostimulated for 150 days. As a result, the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) decreased by approximately 80 times. Also, the content of humic acids increased which indicated
the beginning of pedogenesis phase – soil formation (soilification). Level of humic acids during process at the end is higher about 40%. Also, bioremediation microorganisms from the inorganic matrix (river sand) generate clay minerals (content increases by about 50%) which are characteristic of the soil. At the same time, due to the microbial generation of organic acids, the concentration of carbonate
minerals from sand (calcite and dolomite) decreases. All these indicators confirm the efficiency of bioremediation and the simultaneous formation of man-made soil (MMS) as new resource for agriculture, landscaping and reforestation. The obtained soil was used for the stabilization of municipal waste as an overlay at this time. In conclusion: bioremediation that generates some useful geo-material
is a great example of a circular economy that is different from the usual ones (such as aluminum can and paper recycling).

AB - Poor water solubility of new chemical entities is considered as one of the main obstacles in drug development, as it usually leads to low bioavailability after administration. To overcome these problems, the selection of the appropriate formulation technology needs to be based on the physicochemical properties of the drug and introduced in the early stages of drug research. One example of the new potential drug substance with poor solubility is DK-I-60-3, deuterated pyrazoloquinolinone, designed for the treatment of various neuropsychiatric disorders. In this research, based on preformulation studies, nanocrystal technology was chosen to improve the oral bioavailability of DK-I-60-3. Nanocrystal dispersions stabilized by sodium lauryl sulfate and polyvinylpyrrolidone were prepared by modified wet media milling technique, with the selection of appropriate process and formulation parameters. The nanoparticles characterization included particle size and zeta potential measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray powder diffraction, dissolution and solubility study, and in vivo pharmacokinetic experiments. Developed formulations had small uniform particle sizes and were stable for three months. Nanonization caused decreased crystallite size and induced crystal defects formation, as well as a DK-I-60-3 solubility increase. Furthermore, after oral administration of the developed formulations in rats, two to three-fold bioavailability enhancement was observed in plasma and investigated organs, including the brain.

AB - Microplastics have captured the attention of the scientific community in the last decade. Due to small dimensions and low density, they can easily reach all parts of the Earth. Lately, the attention is shifted towards the health effects, and the pathways of entering into the human organism. The only way to prevent microplastics from entering the food chain is to respect the principles of circular economy. There are many different types of microplastic particles regarding the polymer from which they are obtained. In order to analyse the origin of microplastic particles, firstly it is necessary to isolate them, and then identify them. Some of the methods for identifying microplastics are Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, pyrolytic
gas chromatography - mass spectroscopy, of which FTIR and RAMAN are non-destructive methods. This paper investigates beads of 9 most commonly used commercial polymers in their virgin form. FTIR analysis was performed, and the obtained results of known polymers were compared with the device database. The degree of matching with the found polymer was determined. The obtained results were validated in relation to the declared polymers. Based on the obtained results, instructions are given for further interpretation of FTIR results during the identification of microplastics, as well as suggestions for future research.
