AB - Aerophytic phototrophs, colonizers of different substrates exposed to air, among which are rock substrates in cave habitats, are in general not sufficiently investigated and studied. From the ecological point of view, seasonal/temporal variations and parameters that influence aerophytic phototrophic communities through seasons still remain largely unknown. Seasonal analysis of phototrophic microorganisms from biofilms developed at entrances of Samar and Jezava caves in Eastern Serbia was performed four times a year. All identified phototrophic representatives were assigned to a certain division or group. The relationship between documented groups and different measured, determined and observed ecological parameters was illustrated using principal component analysis (PCA). A high diversity of cyanobacteria and algae was observed as a result of seasonal sampling: 141 taxa in Samar and 61 taxa in Jezava Cave. Cyanobacteria were dominant in both caves (coccoid forms prevailing) and were followed by Bacillariophyta. Bacillariophyta were positively correlated with light intensity and sites where seeping water was present, and cyanobacteria with water content in biofilm, Chl a and relative air humidity. Higher diversity of phototrophs was documented in December and March, and lower in May and August in both caves with Chl a values having the same trend as the diversity of phototrophic microorganisms. This was especially the case with biofilms in which diversity was more prone to seasonal changes and where Cyanobacteria dominated. Only 24 taxa were documented during all four seasons in Samar Cave (Cyanobacteria, Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta representatives) and three in Jezava Cave (Cyanobacteria only).

AB - Phototrophic microorganisms can be found in biofilms at entrances to caves where they have access to sufficient
sunlight, water and nutrients; however, they can also be found inside caves, where they are carried by animals and people, and
can proliferate in the presence of artificial light. Although the genus Humidophila includes some well-known cosmopolitan
species, further exploration of its rare, insufficiently investigated representatives in different geographical areas and unusual
habitats is necessary. Caves remain unknown, little-explored habitats, and many species currently known to science were
recorded for the first time. This study aimed to report species belonging to the genus Humidophila that were identified in
19 caves in Serbia. A total of ten species of this genus were recorded and some of them are documented for the first time
in Serbia. The most abundant species were H. contenta (found in 16 caves), H. paracontenta, and H. aerophila (found in 13
caves), whereas H. pyrenaica was identified in only one cave. The rare species, H. brekkaensoides and H. vidalii, were also
documented and described, but with different dimensions from those provided in current identification keys.

AB - Salt habitats are extreme and unique environments found from Austria through
Hungary to the Vojvodina Province in Serbia. In our study, we investigated eight
saline habitats (channeled salt marshes, moist salt meadows and saline ponds),
from which we collectedplankton, epipelic and epiphytic diatoms. Seventeen diatom
taxa new for the Serbian diatom flora were recorded. In addition, the genus
Haslea, with one species (H. spicula), was recorded for the first time in Serbia. The
identified taxa were sporadic or rare in the samples.
AB - Alkalna slana jezera, bare i močvare su ekstremna i jedinstvena staništa rasprostranjena u Austriji, Mađarskoj i Srbiji (Vojvodina). Istraživanje
je obuhvatilo osam slanih staništa različitog tipa: kanalizovane slatine, zabarena slana staništa i slane bare. Uzorci obuhvataju različite zajednice
silikatnih algi: plankton, bentos i epifite.
Identifikovani taksoni su retki i sporadično nalaženi u uzorcima.

AB - A total of 15 Navicula taxa were recorded in epilithic
communities occurring in seven rivers of Serbia, all of
which are new to the diatom flora of Serbia. The most
interesting of them are N. splendicula and N. moskalii. When
observing N. splendicula specimens under SEM, we noticed
a characteristic silicate tongue in the center of raphe ends,
which had not been previously reported in the available
literature. The insufficiently researched distribution of
N. moskalii and scarce autecological information on the
taxon prompted us to provide new details about the species
in this study. These findings clearly indicate the need for
further comprehensive research that would provide new
information on rare taxa.

niskim organskim opterećenjem i uz odsustvo antropogene eutrofikacije.

AB - The aim of this study was to assess the effect of substrate type and incubation depth on periphyton that had developed on artificial substrates. Uniform rectangular tiles made out of artificial substrates: glass, ceramic, willow tree and yew tree, were fixed on a floating buoy and deployed at three different depths in a photic zone of the Sava Lake (Belgrade, Serbia). Non-taxonomic attributes in the developed biofilm were estimated week-by-week from the start of the experiment in July, until its end in September 2014. Through assessment of substrate type and depth of incubation effect we concluded that these parameters for the fact influence periphyton development and composition. Glass was preferred by autotrophic component over ceramic and wooden substrates. In general, substrate type effect was diminished by increasing incubation depth. When non-taxonomic parameters are to be used in biomonitoring studies, our results suggest that glass substrate and shallow layer of water column (up to 50 cm) for incubation should be preferred.

Uzorci obuhvataju različite zajednice silikatnih algi: plankton, bentos i epifite.

2017). Rezultati naših istraživanja šire njen areal, kao i opseg dimenzija valve, pružajući nove detalje o autekološkim karakteristikama taksona.
Ovi rezultati ukazuju na neophodnost detaljnijih i intenzivnijih istraživanja u cilju proširenja znanja o silikatnim algama Srbije.

AB - The Velika Morava River is the greatest national Serbian river and the significant tributary of the Danube River. The major problems in the Velika Morava River Basin (VMRB) represent untreated industrial and municipal wastewaters. In this study, the level of genotoxic potential at the sites along the VMRB was evaluated by parallel in vitro and in situ approach. Within in vitro testing, genotoxicity of native water samples collected from the sites in VMRB was evaluated by SOS/umuC test on Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 and by the comet assay on HepG2 cells. DNA damage in situ was assessed in bleak (Alburnus alburnus) erythrocytes by the comet (alkaline and Fpg-modified comet) and micronucleus assays. Additionally, the concentration of heavy metals in fish tissue was measured and this data, compiled with the data of the physico-chemical parameters measured in water, was used as a measure of the pollution pressure at the sites. Results showed that applied in vitro tests with native water samples are less sensitive in comparison with in situ tests and should be taken with precaution when making predictions on the status of the ecosystem. Within applied battery of in situ assays differential sensitivity of assays was observed where alkaline comet assay showed the highest potential in differentiation of the sites based on genotoxic potential. Integrated biomarker response showed that usage of the battery of bioassays provides better insight in a genotoxic effects in animals, and consequently, that the holistic approach is more suitable for this type of study.

AB - Diatoms are a widespread group of organisms with well-known ecological preferences. Knowledge of their diversity is of great importance for assessing the environmental status of different aquatic ecosystems. The present study was
based on 55 different localities that included rivers, streams, channels, accumulations and salt marshes throughout Serbia. The results of this study expanded the diatom checklist by 80 taxa, including two new recorded genera (Fistulifera and Microfissurata) for Serbia. The data were obtained by combining light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy
(SEM) that provided reliable identification, which is very important in diatom diversity studies.

AB - Epilithic diatoms are frequently recommended for river biomonitoring, while much less emphasis is placed on epiphytic communities.
This study considers use of epiphytic and epilithic diatom communities from the Raška River in biomonitoring. A total
of 212 diatom taxa were recorded in both communities. Dominant diatoms were Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing)
Czarnecki, A. affine (Grunow) Czarnecki, A. subatomus (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot, Amphora pediculus (Kützing) Grunow,
Diatoma vulgaris Bory, Gomphonema tergestinum (Grunow) Fricke, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata (Ehrenberg) Van
Heurck, Melosira varians Agardh and Navicula tripunctata (Müller) Bory. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to detect
the relationships between diatoms, some environmental factors and sampling sites. Diatoms of the epiphytic community showed
a clearly grouping in relation to the sampling sites as compared with diatoms of the epilithic community. Species common to both
communities showed a similar correlation with some environmental variables (BOD, pH, NH4
+, TP, NO3
− and conductivity),
with three exceptions (Diatoma vulgaris, Cymbella compacta, and Encyonema silesiacum). Pearson’s correlation coefficient
showed correlation between selected environmental variables and diatom indices calculated usingOMNIDIA 6.2 software (TDI,
IPS, CEE, GENRE, TID, SID, SHE and IDSE/5). Diatoms of the epiphytic community are more clearly clustered in relation to
the sampling sites as compared with diatoms of the epilithic community. According to our results there is still Bplace^ in
biomonitoring for epiphytic community. The present study highlights the necessity of sampling both epiphytic and epilithic
communities because substrate specificity could play important role in biomonitoring.

AB - Substrate specificity of the periphyton community is usually underestimated in both periphyton ecology and biomonitoring studies, thus different kinds of both natural and artificial substrates (of organic and inorganic origin) are employed. Periphyton colonization and successional trajectories are particularly debatable processes when different kinds of substrates are considered. In our field experiment, we deployed four kinds of artificial substrates (two inorganic ones - glass and ceramic, and two organic ones - willow and yew wooden tiles) for the development of periphyton in an urban reservoir referred to as Lake Savsko (Belgrade, Serbia). We comparatively investigated the structure, colonization process, diversity and successional trajectories of periphyton. We also assessed the relationship between the dynamics of algae growth forms (ecological groups) on different substrates and selected abiotic limnological factors. Our objective was to determine whether the type of substrate affects periphyton characteristics at various levels and whether an artificial substrate potentially affects the bioindication capacity of ecological groups. We concluded that all substrates behave similarly at the level of structure and colonization phases, but when considering diversity and successional trajectories, the substrate specificity was demonstrated. Our results suggest that communities developed on inert substrates (glass and ceramic) could provide more realistic insight into complex environmental changes.

AB - It is known that diatoms may be present on the skin of various animals (whales, dolphins, manatees, turtles…) (Frankovich et al. 2015, Wetzel et al. 2012). In our study diatoms were collected from the skin of two green frogs’ species: Pelophylax esculentus and P. ridibundus. Studied frogs were captured from the Special Nature Reserve “Deliblatska Pescara” at the locality Stevanove ravnice (Vojvodina province, Serbia). Two sampling methods were performed: (1) nonaggressive adhesive tape method (Urzì and de Leo 2001) and (2) scraping by toothbrush. In laboratory conditions, samples taken by the first method were stained with a drop of Lactophenol Cotton Blue and put on slides to be analyzed. Samples taken by the second method were treated by hot HCl and KMnO4 (Taylor et al. 2005) in order to obtain permanent slides. Light microscope observations and micrographs were made by Zeiss AxioImagerM.1 microscope with DIC optics (x1000 and x1600 magnification) and AxioVision 4.8 software.

The present study describes diversity of diatoms from the green frog skin. According to literature data no studies have been published on diatoms living on the frog skin.

Analysis of adhesive tape samples confirmed the presence of live diatom cells on the frog skin. Among them the most abundant were taxa from the genera Cocconeis, Epithemia, Gomphonema, Navicula and Rhopalodia. Presence of c. 30 diatom genera, such as Amphora, Craticula, Cymbella, Cymbopleura, Cymatopleura, Diploneis, Encyonema, Epithemia, Fallacia, Gomphonema, Luticola, Navicula, Neidium, Nitzschia, Pinnularia, Planothidium, Rhopalodia, Staurosira, Surirella, etc., was observed on permanent slides. The most dominant taxa were: Geissleria decussis sensu lato, Placoneis sp., Lemnicola hungarica, Cocconeis placentula var. lineate and Sellaphora bacillum.

We consider that the great diversity and abundance of diatoms is consequence of their transfer from the environment (mud and macrophytes from eutrophic ponds) onto mucous frog skin. Highly mucous skin is an excellent environment which enables primary conditions for the survival of diatoms. Future research, especially under laboratory conditions, could show whether the frog skin is permanent or temporary diatom habitat.

AB - The main objective of this paper is to report new
information about the distribution and ecology of a
recently described diatom species, Geissleria gereckei.
The opportunity for updating the information on the
distribution and ecology of the species was provided by
the finding of well-developed G. gereckei populations on
the lithic material and bryophytes in the Raška and Mlava
rivers (Serbia). For several years after the first description,
G. gereckei has been known only from the type locality
and from another spring in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National
Park (the south-eastern Alps). After accurate LM and SEM
observations, we provide evidence for the occurrence
of the species also in the two above-mentioned rivers in
Serbia, as well as in the south-western and south-eastern
Alps. After an extensive literature search, it appears that the
species is known with certainty only from these sites. Our
observations and details from the literature suggest that
the species is able to occupy a much broader ecological
niche than the very-specific one observed at the time of
discovery. The two main determinants for the species’
occurrence appear to be the carbonate nature of the
catchments or aquifers, and the ability of the species to
be competitive in habitats or microhabitats exposed to
seasonal desiccation.

AB - Epilithic diatoms from the Vrla River (Serbia) have been used to assess the ecological status of water. A total of 227 diatom taxa belonging to 50 genera were identified in the Vrla River during six research seasons with 13 dominant species recorded. Gomphonema (30 species), Navicula (28) and Nitzschia (26) were the most species-rich genera, followed by Pinnularia (12) and Encyonema (11). One taxa was recorded as new to Serbia - Geissleria acceptata. CCA grouped the diatom taxa into three main groups. The first group included taxa found at most of the sampling sites, the second group involved diatom taxa significantly positively correlated with the oxygen, while the third group showed positive correlation with temperature. RDA showed that some diatom taxa, including: Cocconeis placentula var. placentula, C. placentula var. lineata, C. pseudolineata and Mayamaea atomus var. permitis, are significantly positively correlated with temperature, while others, for example Achnanthidium minutissimum, Hannaea arcus, Nitzschia pura are mostly correlated with total phosphorus, alkalinity and water hardness. The ecological status of the Vrla River ranged from moderate, good to high. It was shown that according to the diatom indices, the ecological status of water downstream and upstream of a trout fish pond was slightly different.

It was shown that according to the diatom indices, the ecological status of water downstream and upstream of a trout fish pond was slightly different.",

AB - The main objective of this study was to assess the ecological status of the Mlava River based on
epilithic diatoms and to test the use of diatom indices as a tool for estimating the quality of fl owing waters in
Serbia. Quantitative analysis showed that in April Achnanthidium minutissimum was dominant at each site,
except at the fi fth site, where Amphora pediculus was dominant. In July and September, Achnanthidium
minutissimum, Achnanthidium pyrenaicum, Amphora pediculus, Denticula tenuis, Diatoma vulgaris, Gomphonema
elegantissimum, Cocconeis pseudolineata and Cocconeis placentula var. lineata dominated. Detrended
correspondence analysis (DCA) was used to detect the major patterns of variation in species composition.
The fi rst DCA axis summarizes the distribution of the diatom community, mainly through temperature,
conductivity, oxygen and water hardness gradient. The second DCA axis was weakly correlated with few
variables. Based on the average values of the pollution sensitivity index (IPS), commission for economical
community metric (CEE) and biological diatom index (IBD), the water of the Mlava River belonged to water
class I during all three seasons. Values of the diatom-based eutrophication/pollution index (EPI-D) indicated
class II water quality. According to calculated trophic diatom index (TDI) values, water of the Mlava River
was characterized by intermediate nutrient concentrations during three seasons. Principal components analysis
was used to represent the correlation between diatom indices, and the highest correlation among the selected
diatom indices is seen between EPI-D, IPS and IBD.

AB - In Serbia Actinocyclus normanii was registered in several rivers and canals. In 1997, it was
found as planktonic species in the Tisza River and in benthic samples (in mud) in the Veliki Bački
Canal. In 2002, it was found as planktonic species in the Danube–Tisza–Danube Canal (Kajtasovo)
and the Ponjavica River (Brestovac and Omoljica). Four years later, in 2006, the species was
found in plankton, benthos and epiphytic samples in the Ponjavica River (Omoljica). A. normanii
is a cosmopolite, alkalibiontic and halophytic species. It occurs in waters with moderate to high
conductivity and it is indicator of eutrophied, polluted waters. Its spread could be explained by
eutrophication of surface waters.

types of substrate (stone surfaces, sand, mud, fi lamentous algae and submerged mosses)
from the Dojkinci River. During the research period, 124 taxa were determined within 43
genera. Among numerous common diatoms we recorded three taxa for the fi rst time in
Serbia: Brachysira intermedia (Øst.) Lange-Bertalot, Chamaepinnularia mediocris (Krass.)
Lange-Bertalot and Navicula tridentula Krass. Also, we observed 21 taxa which are rarely
recorded taxa for Serbia. The most interesting was Diatomella balfouriana Grevill. that
was previously known only from the River Tisa near Titel. In the studied material, it was
identifi ed only in samples collected from the surface of boulders with mosses at the third
locality. Their morphology, distribution and ecology are presented in this paper

toku septembra i oktobra 2014. godine. Identifikovano je ukupno 84 taksona silikatnih algi.
Najveće populacije u okviru epilitske zajednice silikatnih algi u većini pritoka grade Cocconeis
placentula var. lineata i Achnanthidium minutissimum var. minutissimum. Rezultati
ekološki status vode većine ispitivanih pritoka odličan do dobar. Samo rezultati dijatomnih
indeksa za pritoke Simića potok, Konjski potok, Bioštanska Banja i neimenovanu pritoku
13 pokazuju prisustvo umerene antropogene eutrofikacije.

AB - The distribution of diatoms was studied in three types of diatom communities (epiphytes, benthos and plankton)
of a peat bog on the Pešter plateau. The observed diatom flora inhabited all investigated communities, comprising in total
250 taxa in 53 genera. Among them, 45 taxa were new records for the Serbian diatom flora. Identified taxa belonged to different
groups of algae, however alkaliphile diatoms were dominant. New ecological data for Encyonopsis minuta, Pinnularia
isostauron and P. marchica are presented here. All the diatoms were documented by light micrographs, and brief notes on
their morphology, distribution and ecology are provided.

AB - The paper presents data on the composition of epilithic diatoms in the Raška River. Samples were collected by scraping stone surfaces with a brush from 5 localities along the Raška River in April, June, August and November 2011 and March and May 2012. Diatom frustules were cleaned using cold acid method, and mounted on permanent slides. An investigation of the Raška River resulted in description of 106 diatom taxa. The most species rich genera are Navicula (10), Gomphonema (10) and Nitzschia (9), while other genera are presented with one or more species. Detailed floristic analysis of the benthic diatom flora in this river has not been conducted before. Therefore, this paper provides a groundwork for future researches.

AB - The main objective of this paper is to report two benthic, epilithic diatom species from the Raška River. Samples were collected in April, June, August and November 2011 and March and May 2012 from 5 localities along the Raška River by scraping off the stone surface using a brush. Diatom frustules were first cleaned using the cold acid method, and then mounted on permanent slides. Descriptions (main valve measurements of the populations in the Raška River), ecology, distribution in Serbia and Europe, and appropriate photomicrographs of two species are presented. Navicula jakovljevicii Hustedt and Navicula catalanogermanica Lange-Bertalot & Hofmann are rarely found in Europe and these are new distributional records. These new taxa significantly contribute to diatom floristic diversity of the Raška River.
