AB - For long-term protection of stored products there is a growing demand to replace chemical insecticides due to their effects on human health and environmental safety. Particulate materials, such as inert dusts and various submicron and nanomaterials have been extensively tested as viable alternatives. This is the first study on the insecticidal impact of alumina powder (alpha-Al2O3) on the bruchid pest, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae). By altering the fuel to oxidant molar ratio (F/O: 0.5, 0.8, 1.2) in an autocombustion reaction we synthesized alumina powders with specific surface area and particle size varying from the nano- to micron scale. It was found that particle morphology influenced survival and progeny number of A. obtectus. The order of powders from low to high efficacy in reducing beetle performance (F/O-0.8 LT F/O-0.5 LT F/O-1.2) correlated well with increase in surface area, pore volume and diameter, and decrease in particle size. Survival was also affected by time of exposure, the applied dose and sex. The estimated median lethal concentration of the most efficient powder F/O-1.2 was significantly lower in males (LC50 = 330.4 ppm) than in females (LC50 = 409.6 ppm). Our results suggest that alumina powder can be considered for seed protection against A. obtectus, particularly during long-term storage, as it is cost effective, exerts limited toxicity to humans and demands no repetitive use like conventional pesticides.

AB - In this study, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was synthesized by suspension copolymerization, functionalized by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine and used for immobilization of Pd(II) ions from chloride and nitrate solutions under batch experimental condition. The amino-functionalized sample and samples with immobilized Pd(II) ions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and scanning energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). The electrochemical behavior of electrodes composed of synthesized samples was tested in 0.1 M H2SO4 by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The shape of recorded CV showed dependence on the type of Pd-salt used for Pd immobilization. The reaction of oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) from 0.1 M H2SO4 at investigated samples was also studied. Electrooxidation of 4-CP resulted in passivation and formation of reversible hydroquinone/benzoquinone on both investigated electrodes, although hydroquinone/benzoquinone formation was more pronounced on Pd immobilized from nitrite solution.

AB - A novel magnetic macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (mPGME) was prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine (mPGME-deta). The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and SQUID magnetometry. The sorption behavior of mPGME-deta toward pertechnetate ions (TcO4-) from aqueous solution was studied. Experimental results indicated relatively fast TcO4- sorption kinetics that depends on pH and ionic strength, with a high removal efficiency of 99% within 180 min in the pH range 3.0-5.0. The pseudo-second-order model yielded the best fit for the kinetic data.

AB - Among the diverse order of Hymenoptera, aquatic species are of special interest. During macrozoobenthos sampling in the rivers of Serbia in 2003 and during the period 2011−2012, pupae of Silo pallipes Fabricius, 1781 were recorded which were parasitized by an ichneumonid wasp Agriotypus armatus Curtis, 1832, this being the first record of it for the Balkan Peninsula. A total of 217 A. armatus specimens were collected at 29 localities situated along 16 watercourses of Serbia. All four parasitoid stages (egg, larva, pupa and resting adult) were recorded. The identity of the parasitoid was confirmed using standard molecular methods. This study also focuses on the ecology of the parasitoid and its host. The widespread distribution of A. armatus in Europe suggests the presence of this species in other Balkan countries, but this has not yet been confirmed due to a lack of surveys and/or the constantly increasing pollution of freshwaters.
