AB - Cavitation erosion application could be observed as dangerous phenomena which have large influence on engineering materials behavior and life time in working conditions. This phenomenon is related to fluid flow conditions, which could cause pits and defects formation resulting in mechanical properties degradation, as well as potential risk of failure of the part. In this paper results for cordierite and alumina (low cement high alumina castable, LCC), based refractories subjected to cavitation erosion testing will be presented. Testing of the samples will be according standard method, with stationary sample in ultrasonic vibratory method. Degradation of the samples will be monitored by mass and volume loss, as well as changes in morphological characteristics. Image analysis will be applied for pits characteristics (number, average diameter, area, roundness) determination.

Reinforcement in the form of particles based on MgAlLDH (layered double hydroxide) deposited on silica obtained from rice husks on two substrates. A metal base and glass were used. The adhesive properties are important in order to see the possibility of using these materials in applications. In order to measure the adhesive properties of the material, the composite microhardness measurement method is used by applying different loads in order to evaluate the adhesion parameter that shows the effect of the coating on the substrate. It was compared to how a pure photopolymerizing acrylate matrix bonds with a chromium-based dental alloy substrate that is used in the production of different parts of dentures by bonding to a glass substrate. Then, it was compared how composite materials are bonded to both substrates. Adhesion was monitored through the change in wetting angle between the composites, and the results were compared with the results of microindentation. It was shown that the addition of composite particles increases the adhesive properties of the composite compared to the pure matrix and that better adhesion is achieved between the composite and the metal substrate than between the composite and the glass substrate.

AB - Polymer composites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and reinforced with particles based on unmodified/modified
plant provenance biosilica particles were synthesized and characterized. An unsaturated polyester resin was obtained from
waste poly (ethylene terephthalate (PET). Biosilaca particles are made from rice husk biomass. The surface of the produced
silica particles was modified using three different silanes: 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (MEMO), trimethoxyvinylsilane (TMEVS), and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). The microhardness test method was used to investigate
the mechanical properties of synthesized composite material with variations in dwell times and applied loads. Optimization of
composite microhardness value prediction in function of synthesized parameters (type of modification of silica particles) and
measurement parameters (applied loads and dwell times) was done using the method of response surface methodology (RSM)
regression analysis. The maximal microhardness values (0.459 GPa) were obtained of type modification of silica particles with
vinyl with 80% confidence for 120 experimental variables. This method can be used to choose the optimal dwell time and load
for comparison of measurements between different composite materials and to enable the choice of the material in terms of
optimization of the quality of reinforcement and quality of interphase determined by surface modification.

AB - While dental poly methyl methacrylate(PMMA) possesses distinctive qualities such as ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and favorable physical and mechanical properties, these attributes alone are inadequate to impart the necessary impact strength and hardness. Consequently, pure PMMA is less suitable for dental applications. This research focused on the incorporation of Strontium titanate (SrTiO3-STO) and hybrid filler STO/Manganese oxide (MnO2) to improve impact resistance and hardness. The potential of STO in reinforcing PMMA is poorly investigated, while hybrid filler STO/MnO2 has not been presented yet. Differential scanning calorimetry is conducted in order to investigate the agglomeration influence on the PMMA glass transition temperature (Tg), as well as the leaching of residual monomer and volatile additives that could pose a threat to human health. It has been determined that agglomeration with 1 wt% loading had no influence on Tg, while the first scan revealed differences in evaporation of small molecules, in favor of composite PMMA-STO/MnO2, which showed the trapping potential of volatiles. Investigations of mechanical properties have revealed the significant influence of hybrid STO/MnO2 filler on microhardness and total absorbed impact energy, which were increased by 89.9% and 145.4%, respectively. Results presented in this study revealed the reinforcing potential of hybrid nanoparticles that could find application in other polymers as well.

AB - This study is aimed at extending the soybean hulls' lifetime by their utilization as an adsorbent for metal ions (Cd2+ and Cu2+) and dyes (Reactive Yellow 39 (RY 39) and Acid Blue 225 (AB 225)). ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, FE-SEM microscopy, and zeta potential measurements were used for adsorbent characterization. The effect of the solution's pH, peroxidase extraction, adsorbent particle size, contact time, the pollutant's initial concentration, and temperature on the soybean hulls' adsorption potential was studied. Before peroxidase extraction, soybean hulls were capable of removing 72% Cd2+, 71% Cu2+ (at a pH of 5.00) or 81% RY 39, and 73% AB 225 (at a pH of 3.00). For further experiments, soybean hulls without peroxidase were used for several reasons: (1) due to their observed higher metal ion removal, (2) in order to reduce the waste disposal cost after the peroxidase (usually used for wastewater decolorization) extraction, and (3) since the soybean hulls without peroxidase possessed significantly lower secondary pollution than those with peroxidase. Cd2+ and Cu2+ removal was slightly increased when the smaller adsorbent fraction (710-1000 μm) was used, while the adsorbent particle size did not have an impact on dye removal. After 30 min of contact time, 92% and 88% of RY 39 and AB 225 were removed, respectively, while after the same contact time, 80% and 69% of Cd2+ and Cu2+ were removed, respectively. Adsorption of all tested pollutants follows a pseudo-second-order reaction through the fast adsorption, intraparticle diffusion, and final equilibrium stage. The maximal adsorption capacities determined by the Langmuir model were 21.10, 20.54, 16.54, and 17.23 mg/g for Cd2+, Cu2+, RY 39, and AB 225, respectively. Calculated thermodynamic parameters suggested that the adsorption of all pollutants is spontaneous and of endothermic character. Moreover, different binary mixtures were prepared, and the competitive adsorptions revealed that the soybean hulls are the most efficient adsorbent for the mixture of AB 225 and Cu2+. The findings of this study contribute to the soybean hulls' recovery after the peroxidase extraction and bring them into the circular economy concept.

AB - This investigation represents a novel approach for tuning the jute structure and properties using sodium periodate (NaIO4) oxidation. The obtained results revealed that the jute fabrics exhibited an increase in the aldehyde group content (for up to 114.7%) with an increase in the NaIO4 concentration and/or oxidation duration. Due to the decline in the cellulose lateral order index (LOI) and fiber crystallinity index after oxidation, it can be concluded that jute crystalline areas are affected by sodium periodate oxidation. Both mentioned parameters are responsible for fabric mechanical properties, so, it was expected that by decreasing the LOI and jute fibers’ crystallinity, their maximum force and stiffness will decrease too. This behavior is also attributed to the fiber damage, which is the most pronounced for the fabric treated with 0.4% NaIO4 for 120 min. Besides slightly deteriorated mechanical properties, fabrics oxidized with 0.2% NaIO4 for 60 or 120 min and with 0.4% NaIO4 for 60 min showed lower mass loss (6.78-12.22%) after 750 abrasion cycles compared to the raw jute (18.94%). Furthermore, oxidation led to obtaining fabrics with enhanced moisture sorption and water retention power that are inversely proportional to the fiber crystallinity. Due to the opportunity for tuning fiber structure and properties oxidized fabrics can be considered for various applications such as geo-prebiotic supports for cyanobacteria growth in biocarpet engineering, i.e., to promote a sustainable relationship between the microbiota and abiotic constituents on the degraded land surface.

AB - Aniline, the main representative of aromatic amines, occurs in a large number
of industries, such as the production of textiles, plastics, medicines, pesticides,
rubber, and varnishes.1 Due to practicality and efficiency, a molecularly imprinted
polymers (MIPs) can be used as sorbents for removing aniline.2 In this study,
magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer was synthesized via suspension
copolymerization while characterization was performed by various methods in order
to obtain an efficient sorbent for the aniline removal from an aqueous solution.
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed characteristic vibrational
bands which suggested successful synthesis of MIP, nitrogen gas adsorption-desorption
measurements as well as mercury porosimetry have shown that the most
dominant pores were mesopores, while scanning electron microscopy with energy
dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) confirmed a 3D spherical porous

AB - Acrylate polymers are used in several applications such as dentistry, medicine,
and industry. The modification of their properties using the reinforcement is
of key importance for the possible applications. Layered double hydroxides are
materials that are easily synthesized by several techniques giving the possibility to modulate the chemical composition and morphology of the reinforcement and they consist of a divalent and a trivalent anion hydroxide and the
layers can be exfoliated and thus provide a material interesting for composite
reinforcement. In this paper, Mn was used as a divalent and Al as a trivalent
cation. The obtained particles were used as reinforcement for the preparation
of composites in 1, 3, and 5 wt% quantities and prepared samples were compared to the matrix consisting of PMMA. Physical mechanical properties of the
sample having the best mechanical properties (with 3 wt% of MnAl-LDH
filers) exhibited 6.38% modulus of elasticity, 27% hardness, and 10% tensile
strength improved values compared to the clear PMMA matrix. Toughness
was lowered in this sort of composite compared to the pure matrix.

AB - Population growth, the development of agriculture, industry, and mining, caused the creation of an increasing amount of wastewater. Due to the discharge of wastewater, without prior treatment, the quality of water resources is impaired. Polluting substances, such as pesticides, have a negative impact on human health and the environment. Heavy pollution of both surface and underground water is one of the biggest problems associated with the use of pesticides. They reach human organisms indirectly via agricultural products. Most pesticides are more or less toxic, some of them are highly soluble in water. In recent years, special attention has been paid to the development of methods for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with pesticide residues, in order to partially reduce or eliminate their further impact on humans, plants, and the environment. Among many processes, the photocatalytic degradation process has proven to be a very effective process for the removal of pesticides from wastewater. Photocatalytic degradation implies the breakdown of various types of toxic organic substances into simpler molecules, such as ions, water, etc. In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of the pesticide mesotrione (MS) using ZnO photocatalyst is presented. The degradation of the pesticide compound was studied using Shimadzu 1800 analytical UV-VIS spectroscopy. As a replacement for UVC radiation, a solar-imitated irradiation Ultra Vitalux (UV) lamp (300W) was used. Degradation kinetics follows pseudo-first order. After 240 minutes, the MS was completely degraded.

AB - The sepiolite/ZrO2 composites were prepared by sepiolite (Sep) modification with zirconium propoxide in toluene at room temperature for 24 h (Sep–ZrI) or 95 °C for 4 h (sample Sep–ZrII). The efficiency of the obtained composites for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions at initial pH = 4 and pH = 8 was investigated. Characterization of the samples shows that synthesis at a higher temperature for a shorter time provides a slightly higher content of amorphous Zr phase, which is deposited on the sepiolite fibers as a thin layer and agglomerated nanoparticles. Compared to Sep, the composites have a lower point of zero charge and higher specific surface area and pore volume. The adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo second-order model. The adsorption capacities of the composites are approximately the same at both initial pH and higher at initial pH = 4 than at pH = 8. The XPS and ATR-FTIR of Sep–ZrI before and after adsorption identifies the formation of inner-sphere complexes as the mechanism of phosphate adsorption. The slow release during desorption with NaOH solution confirms the strong bonds of the phosphates with the surface of the composites.

AB - In the present study, synthesized macroporous copolymer was used for the sorption of lindane
from an aqueous solution. This organochlorine pesticide is classified, according to US EPA, as
mutagenic and teratogenic. Residues of lindane can persist in the environment, migrate long
distances, and cause widespread contamination. In this way, lindane residues can reach the
human body through the food chain. The usage of this pesticide is banned in most countries.
However, lindane remains a serious toxicological problem at industrial sites where lindane was
used coupled with improper wastewater disposal and has led to serious contamination. In
addition, some countries still allow the production and use of lindane, and despite localized
restrictions, lindane contamination remains a global problem. Taking into account these
reasons, its removal from the environment is of a great significance. The obtained macroporous
copolymer was syntesized via suspension copolymerization and was characterized by Fourier
transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The
parameters which affect sorption efficiency of the lindane were: pH, sorption time (tsor), ion
strength (ion), rpm, and dose of sorbent. These variables were optimized by the experimental
design which include Plackett-Burman Design (PBD) and Central Composite Design (CCD).
After screening step by the PBD, the optimum conditions were obtained by the CCD where the
values were investigated in two levels. The design of experiment showed that the ion strength
and dose of sorbent were the most significant parameters, while the other variables do not have
such an effect on sorption efficiency. Accordingly, the optimum conditions to reach the maximum
recovery were: pH 8, 180 min sorption time, 300 rpm, 2 w/v % ion strength and 8 g/l dose of
sorbent. The results showed that the studied copolymer could be an efficient sorbent for trace
lindane in water with recoveries above 80 %.

AB - Lindane belongs to the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) group, which can cause carcinogenic, endocrine, and neurological problems in an organism. The widespread presence of lindane in the environment demands efficient methods of its removal. In the present work, we investigated the removal of lindane from an aqueous solution using a synthesized macroporous copolymer surface modified with different functional groups through two-step post-functionalization. The modified copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mercury intrusion porosimetry. For the kinetics of lindane sorption, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, Avrami, and fractional power models were used via linear and non-linear regression analyses. The quality of the fitting of each model to experimental data was assessed based on seven error functions: coefficient of determination (R2), Marquardt’s percent standard deviation (MPSD), Chi-square statistic test (χ2), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID), the sum of the errors squared (SSE), sum of the absolute errors (EABS), and average relative error (ARE). The investigation of error estimation methods showed that the pseudo-second-order model best fits the experimental kinetics data for both regression analyses. The mechanism of lindane sorption was investigated by subjecting the data to the liquid film diffusion model, intraparticle diffusion model, Bangham, and Boyd models. The results showed that intraparticle diffusion was not the sole rate-controlling step; film-diffusion also affected the sorption process.

AB - Copper from sulfate baths without and with added inorganic pigment particles based on strontium aluminate doped with europium and dysprosium (SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+) was electrodeposited on a brass cathode by a galvanostatic regime. Morphological, structural, and roughness analysis of the pigment particles, the pure (pigment-free) Cu coating, and the Cu coatings with incorporated pigment particles were performed using SEM, XRD, and AFM techniques, respectively. Hardness and creep resistance were considered for the examination of the mechanical properties of the Cu coatings, applying Chicot–Lesage (for hardness) and Sargent–Ashby (for creep resistance) mathematical models. The wettability of the Cu coatings was examined by the static sessile drop method by a measurement of the water contact angle. The incorporation of pigment particles in the Cu deposits did not significantly affect the morphology or texture of the coatings, while the roughness of the deposits rose with the rise in pigment particle concentrations. The hardness of the Cu coatings also increased with the increasing concentration of pigments and was greater than that obtained for the pigment-free Cu coating. The presence of the pigments caused a change in the wettability of the Cu coatings from hydrophilic (for the pigment-free Cu coating) to hydrophobic (for Cu coatings with incorporated particles) surface areas.

AB - ingle phase cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) with nanoparticles of similar sizes (15.7-19 nm) was obtained by different synthesis methods: coprecipitation, ultrasonically assisted coprecipitation, coprecipitation followed by mechanochemical treatment, microemulsion and microwave assisted hydrothermal synthesis. The obtained CoFe2O4 samples have been studied using a variety of characterization techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, far infrared (FIR) reflectivity and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) in combination with Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in mid IR spectra. Different methods of synthesis produced nanoparticles with different lattice constants, internal stresses and different cation inversion values. This is confirmed in the subtle changes in the Raman and IR spectra of different CoFe2O4 nano-powders. The Raman spectra of CoFe2O4 were compared with the spectra of other ferrites and some cubic oxide spinels in an attempt to evaluate the contribution of tetrahedral and octahedral oscillations in certain Raman modes.

AB - Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the most toxic compounds knownto man. Several PAHs are proven to be carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic. Due to their widedistribution in the environment and their toxicity, it is considered important to monitor the levels ofthese compounds in foodstuff. PAHs have been detected in many foods including plant-based suchas vegetable oils, cereal grains, herbs, spices, teas and supplements. As the awareness for thehealthy lifestyle has increased globally, the intake of medicinal herbs as tea and spices has alsogrown immensely. Therefore, even stronger emphasis must be made to monitor the toxic levels ofPAHs in herbs. The legislations of the maximum concentrations of certain contaminants in food ofthe Republic of Serbia included PAHs values in dry herbs only by the end of 2019 (Official GazetteRS, No. 81/2019) in comparison to European Commission Regulation dating from 2011. Therefore, herein we focused on analytical method development for PAHs determination in medicinal herbs.

AB - This paper presents sustainable technology for environmentally friendly composite production. Biobased unsaturated polyester resin (b-UPR), synthesized from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glycosylate and renewable origin maleic anhydride (MAnh) and propylene glycol
(PG), was reinforced with unmodified and vinyl-modified biosilica nanoparticles obtained from
rice husk. The structural and morphological properties of the obtained particles, b-UPR, as well as
composites, were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic
resonance spectroscopy (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron
microscopy (TEM) techniques. The study of the influence of biosilica modification on the mechanical
properties of composites was supported by hardness modeling. Improvement of the tensile strength
of the b-UPR-based composite at 2.5 wt.% addition of biosilica modified with vinyl silane, named
“b-UPR/SiO2
-V” composite, has been achieved with 88% increase. The thermal aging process applied
to the b-UPR/SiO2
-V composite, which simulates use over the product’s lifetime, leads to the deterioration of composites that were used as fillers in commercial unsaturated polyester resin (c-UPR).
The grinded artificially aged b-UPR composites were used as filler in c-UPR for the production of a
table top layer with outstanding mechanical properties, i.e., impact resistance and microhardness, as
well as fire resistance rated in the V-0 category according to the UL-94 test. Developing sustainable
composites that are chemically synthesized from renewable sources is important from the aspect of
preserving the environment and existing resources as well as the extending their life cycle.

AB - Vaccinium myrtillus L. (bilberry, Ericaceae), a perennial, wild, and small deciduous shrub that grows in the mountains and forests of Europe. The leaf extracts are widely used in traditional medicine due to their astringent, antiseptic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, and hypoglycemic activities. Microwave-assisted extraction provides various benefits, including reducing solvent consumption and extraction time and increasing extraction yield. In the present study, bilberry extracts were prepared using dried leaves, pure ethanol, or an ethanol-water mixture, and different temperatures in a microwave reactor (60, 100, and 160 ◦C). The extracts were examined in terms of total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant activity. The TPC of the 96% ethanol extracts rose with the increase of the extraction temperature; the extract obtained at 60 ◦C (37.2 ± 0.5 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g of plant material)<the extract at 100 ◦C (46.6 ± 0.3 GAE/g)<the extract at 160 ◦C (55.1 ± 0.5 mg/g). The TPC of the 50% ethanol extract prepared at 60 ◦C was significantly lower (54.9 ± 1.0 mg GAE/g) in comparison to the extracts obtained at 100 and 160 ◦C (58.3 ± 1.0 and 58.0 ± 1.5 mg GAE/g, respectively). ABTS antioxidant capacity was higher in the 50% ethanol extracts compared to 96% ethanol parallels, while in the DPPH assay, there was no statistically significant difference between the 50 and 96% ethanol extracts. Due to higher TPC and anti-ABTS activity and reduced consumption of organic solvent, a 50% ethanol extract of V. myrtillus was favored, while the optimal temperature was 60 ◦C for the extract with the highest antioxidant capacity and 100 ◦C for the extract with the highest amount of polyphenols.

AB - In this work, the coefficient of fluid-wall mass transfer in an inverse fluidized bed was determined using the adsorption method. The experiments were carried out in a column with a diameter of 45 mm with spherical and non-spherical particles of polypropylene and polyethylene with a diameter of 3.3-4.9 mm and a density of about 930 kg m-3. A diluted solution of methylene blue was used as a fluidization medium, which was adsorbed on part of the surface of the column on silica gel. The obtained results showed that the presence of particles during inverse fluidization does not contribute significantly to mass transfer compared to the influence of particles on transfer in conventional fluidized beds. Therefore, the pseudofluid concept was introduced into the analysis and an empirical correlation was performed to determine the mass transfer coefficient. The obtained results were compared with literature correlations for inverse and conventional fluidized beds.

AB - In the last decades, the rapid development of industrial and agricultural activity caused the release of different organic/or nonorganic pollutants in water, earth, and air which lead to a threat to human health and the ecological environment. These pollutants contain toxic heavy metals, organic dyes, pesticides, pharmaceutics, and others (Aboua et al., 2015). Organic dyes are visible pollutants used as coloring agents in, textiles, plastics, paper, food industries, etc. For their removal from wastewater, eco-friendly treatment is needed. Among many process purification, the process of adsorption proved to be an effective method for removing pollutants that are present in water, such as pesticides, dyes, and heavy metal ions. Due to the specific properties of polluting substances, the goal is to develop a cheap, efficient, environmentally friendly material. Among them, cotton-based materials can be obtained from various natural sources and can be employed as inexpensive adsorbents. Their adsorption capacities for pollutants can be related to chemical treatment. In general, chemically modified cellulose exhibits higher adsorption capacities for various aquatic pollutants than their unmodified forms. In this aim, oxidized cotton fabric was used in this work, which was chemically modified with citric acid and ethyl lysinate, respectively. In order to activate the surface of the fabric for chemical modification and increase absorption ability, carboxyl and aldehyde functional groups were introduced using hydrogen peroxide. Then the oxidized cotton fabric was cross-linked with citric acid and ethyl lysinate (Co-CA-Et-Lys) using diisopropylcarboimide to promote ester and amide groups formation. The structure of obtained material was analyzed by using the ATR-FTIR technique. The resulting modified fabric proved to be a good adsorbent for the removal of cationic dyes malachite green (MG) and methylene blue (MB). Its adsorption behavior with respect to the pH, adsorption time, and initial concentration was investigated. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that the adsorption equilibrium was reached after 1 h for both Malachite Green (MG) and Methylene Blue (MB). Adsorption kinetics data were satisfactorily fitted with the pseudo-second-order rate model (PSO), and adsorption data were best fitted using Langmuir model. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities for Co-CA-Et-Lys cross-linked fabric showed a maximum of 168.4 mg/g and 124.9 mg/g for MG and MB, respectively. Compared to other adsorbents based on natural materials, oxidized cotton fabric showed much better sorption properties.

AB - Vaccinium myrtillus leaf waste extracts were prepared using lactic acid+amonium acetate and maceration, heat- and ultrasound-assisted extractions (HAE and UAE, respectively). The obtained extracts were characterized via analysis of total polyphenol content (TPC), pH, zeta potential, conductivity, density, surface tension, viscosity, and antioxidant potential. The TPC was the highest in the extract prepared in HAE (53.0±0.9 mg GAE/g), whereas the extracts from maceration and UAE possessed significantly lower TPC (50.4±0.7 and 49.5±0.4 mg GAE/g). The ABTS radical scavenging potential was the highest in the extract prepared in HAE (38.4±1.1 µmol TE/g), followed by the extract obtained using UAE (33.7±1.5 µmol TE/g) and maceration (30.2±1.7 µmol TE/g). The DPPH antioxidant capacity followed the same trend: HAE>UAE>maceration. The zeta potential was low in all extracts (2.66±0.48 mV for macerate, 2.57±0.20 mV for HAE, and 3.17±0.13 mV for UAE), while the conductivity was in the range of 1.87±0.13 and 1.84±0.11 mS/cm (maceration and HAE) to 2.10±0.11 mS/cm (UAE). The density varied from 1.105±0.009 g/mL for macerate to 1.122±0.006 and 1.117±0.001 g/mL for HAE and UAE extracts. There were no statistically significant differences in the surface tension and viscosity (~23.5 mN/m and ~5.5 mPa∙s). The highest TPC and antioxidant potential were measured in the extract obtained using HAE, whereas the extract prepared by ultrasound waves possessed the highest zeta potential and conductivity. Therefore, the extraction technique should be chosen depending on the future application of V. myrtillus extract.

AB - Vaccinium myrtillus L.(Ericaceae), a perennial, wild, and small deciduous shrub that grows in the mountains and forests of Europe, contains anthocyanins, phenolic acids, flavonoids, fatty acids, stilbenes, iridoid glycosides, dietary fibers, vitamins, and minerals. The leaves' extracts are widely used in traditional medicine due to their astringent, antiseptic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, skin-rejuvenating, lipid-lowering, hypolipidemic, and hypoglycemic activities. The novel extraction techniques, including ultrasound-assisted extraction, provide various benefits, such as reducing solvent consumption and extraction time and increasing extraction yield, and quality. Hence, in the present study, V. myrtillus extracts were prepared using dried leaves (0.66 g), 50% ethanol as the extraction solvent (20 mL), and maceration (60 min) or ultrasound-assisted extraction (ultrasound probe, amplitude of 60% for 5 min). The obtained extracts were examined in terms of total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (ABTS, DPPH, FRAP, and CUPRAC assays). The TPC of the extract prepared using maceration was 55.2±0.7 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g of plant material, while the TPC of the extract prepared using an ultrasound probe was 55.6±1.0 mg GAE/g. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of the extracts correlated with the TPC and amounted to 1.81±0.05 mg/mL for macerate and 1.79±0.02 mg/mL for the extract obtained using an ultrasound probe, whereas ABTS antioxidant capacity did not correlate with the polyphenol concentration, 31.4±0.9 µmol Trolox equivalents (TE)/g for the macerate and 43.4±1.1 µmol TE/g for the extract from the ultrasound-assisted extraction. According to the results of FRAP and CUPRAC assays, the antioxidant potential was similar for both extracts (15.3±0.2 and 15.5±0.2 µmol Fe2+/g and 45.7±0.5 and 46.0±0.7 µmol TE/g, respectively). Due to higher ABTS radical scavenging potential and significantly shorter extraction time, V. myrtillus extract prepared using an ultrasound probe was favored. The present research was an initial step in the preparation of V. myrtillus extracts which can be potentially implemented in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic formulations.

AB - Thymus serpyllum L. (wild thyme) extracts were prepared using 1 g of plant material and three natural deep eutectic solvents (30 mL, malic acid+maltose, lactic acid+menthol, or citric acid+glycerol with 50% of water) in maceration (90 min). The extracts were characterized in terms of total polyphenol content (TPC), total protein content, extraction yield, zeta potential, conductivity, pH, density, surface tension, and viscosity. TPC was the highest in citric acid+glycerol extract (35.06±1.13 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g of plant material), whereas malic acid+maltose and lactic acid+menthol extracts possessed similar TPC (29.62±1.11 and 28.94±1.15 mg GAE/g, respectively). Total protein content amounted to 5.55±0.20 mg/g in citric acid+glycerol extract, while significantly lower values were determined in malic acid+maltose and lactic acid+menthol extracts (1.22±0.30 and 1.73±0.18 mg/g, respectively). The extraction yield was the highest for citric acid+glycerol extract, 1.57±0.11%, followed by malic acid+maltose and lactic acid+menthol extracts, 1.28±0.10 and 1.27±0.13%, respectively. Zeta potential (absolute value, as a predictor of potential application in water treatment) was low in all extracts (0.86±0.06 mV for citric acid+glycerol, -0.35±0.09 mV for lactic acid+menthol, and -0.17±0.05 mV for malic acid+maltose extract). The conductivity (as a predictor of antioxidant capacity) was in the range of 2.35±0.21 and 2.71±0.29 mS/cm (citric acid+glycerol and malic acid+maltose extracts) to 5.70±0.23 mS/cm (lactic acid+menthol extract). pH ranged from 1.44 in citric acid+glycerol extract to 1.78 and 1.85 in malic acid+maltose and lactic acid+menthol extracts. Density varied from 1.067±0.003 g/mL for lactic acid+menthol extract to 1.169±0.002 and 1.195±0.005 g/mL for citric acid+glycerol and malic acid+maltose extracts. Surface tension was the highest in citric acid+glycerol extract (38.0±0.4 mN/m), followed by malic acid+maltose and lactic acid+menthol extracts (31.5±0.4 and 25.9±0.1 mN/m, respectively). The viscosity of lactic acid+menthol extract was significantly lower (1.83±0.30 mPa•s) in comparison to malic acid+maltose and citric acid+glycerol extracts (6.64±0.15 and 7.84±0.10 mPa•s, respectively). The highest TPC, total proteins, and extraction yield were measured in citric acid+glycerol extract, while lactic acid+menthol extract possessed the highest conductivity and the lowest density, surface tension, and viscosity. Therefore, the constitution of natural deep eutectic solvent should be optimized depending on the future application of T. serpyllum extract.
