AB - Cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films with polyhedral
oligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) was investigated in this study. The hybrid films are
made with 1, 3 and 5 wt% of POSS reagents containing: (a) hydroxyl (POSS-M),
(b) both hydroxyl and allyl (POSS-M-A) and (c) methacryloyl groups (POSS-MCl).
Addition of 5 wt% POSS-M-A caused the highest microhardness increase for
49.8%, in comparison to the pure matrix material. Cavitation resistance of hybrid
films, estimated as the time-dependent mass loss, was improved by POSS addition.
POSS-M-A addition (5 wt%) contributed to 94% lower mass loss comparing
to pure Bis-GMA/TEGDMA film. Scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force
microscopy (AFM) showed the lowest surface roughness obtained for composite
with POSS-M-A. The improved hardness and wear resistance of the composite
films indicated that POSS-M-A filler enhanced interfacial adhesion and reinforcing
of the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix.

AB - The aim of this research was to obtain a carbon solid residue by the carbonization process of biomass in an inert atmosphere which, through physical activation and chemical treatment (using TEOS - tetraethyl orthosilicate) would allow creation of highly porous and spatially distinct ordered bio-SiC ceramics. The results of carbonization experiments at several operating temperatures and activation of carbons with multiple-cycle treatments TEOS clearly showed the possibility of obtaining SiC nano-structures, after performing the carbothermal reduction at 1400 °C. The increase in the activation temperature and the duration time starts the development of the SiC particles inside the porous structure. The XRPD analysis showed that the major SiC polytype has cubic SiC (β-SiC) structure and remainder is hexagonal SiC polytypic (α-SiC) structure. It was established that the carbons obtained from carbonization of the Platanus orientalis L. plane tree fruit (PTF) precursor and activated at 850 °C with longer holding times (1 and 2 h) exhibit β-SiC (cubic) nano-wires. A possible nano-wires increment mechanism was suggested. The obtained results represent significant contribution in understanding the process as well as the main characteristics of SiC nano-materials and their possible applications.

AB - Hybrid composite panels of Wood-Plastic Composites (WPC) consisting of wood and
poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were reinforced with alumina particles and made by
“hot pressing” method. Alumina-based particles were made by sol-gel technique. The
particles were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD). The resulting alumina particles
were modified with (3mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS), in order to obtain better
mechanical properties of the composite relative to the composite with unmodified alumina
particles. The aim of this work was to study the influence of composite structure and the
moisture absorption on bending and the impact properties of the hybrid composite. The
bending and impact tests revealed that modulus of elasticity and absorbed energy of
deformation increased with modification of alumina and slightly decrease after moisture
absorption.

AB - This study presents preparation and characterization of ethyl cellulose based nanocomposites. Successful use of simple solvent casting technique provided nanocomposites with high loads of barium ferrite magnetic nanopowder in the polymer matrix, promising significant improvement of mechanical properties. Investigation of morphology revealed formation of agglomerates that are still on nanoscopic level. Nanocomposite thin films with a higher content of the magnetic powder showed substantial enhancement of break strength, elongation and microhardness compared to the pure ethyl cellulose, which was the primary aim of this research.

AB - Due to the development of industry and population growth in recent years, there are problems related to industrial wastewater that needs to be addressed in an environmentally friendly and economical way. All wastewater from plants, regardless of how it was generated, contains harmful substances that may have a certain degree of toxic impurities and must be treated if its quality does not meet the legal requirements. The purpose of wastewater treatment is the removal of harmful substances, which reduces the degree of its pollution, and at the same time achieves a certain economic and environmental effect. This technical solution ensures the optimization of the wastewater treatment process of the Ammunition Factory in Uzići. Wastewater is purified by a precipitation process using calcium oxide to remove colloidal substances and heavy metals. Most of the pollutants are of organic origin and their removal is performed by applying advanced oxidation processes using ozone and ozone in combination with ultrasound in order to achieve water quality that complies with legal regulations. Advanced oxidation processes are the most efficient methods for removing and degrading poorly soluble pollutants from wastewater. The purification process is optimized in terms of the technological process, concentration, treatment time and the amount of oxidizing agent applied. The degree of water pollution with organic compounds is determined on the basis of measurements of HPK, BOD and the concentration of heavy metals (lead, iron, chromium, copper, zinc, aluminum).

Stepen zagađenosti vode organskim jedinjenjima je određivati na osnovu merenja HPK, BPK i koncentracije teških metala (olovo, gvožđe, hrom, bakar, cink, aluminijum)., Due to the development of industry and population growth in recent years, there are problems related to industrial wastewater that needs to be addressed in an environmentally friendly and economical way. The degree of water pollution with organic compounds is determined on the basis of measurements of HPK, BOD and the concentration of heavy metals (lead, iron, chromium, copper, zinc, aluminum).",

AB - The mechanical properties of systems consisting of copper coatings
electrodeposited on both brass sheet (BS) and thick electrodeposited nickel
coating (ED Ni) substrates have been investigated. The electrodeposition of
copper coatings was performed with and without the ultrasound assistance. The
ultrasound application decreases root mean square (RMS) roughness of deposited Cu coating on both applied substrates, as obtained from non-contact
AFM measurement. The coating roughness is highly dependent on the substrate roughness, being the smallest for the Cu coatings deposited on ED Ni
substrate with the ultrasound mixing. The hardness and adhesion properties
were characterized using the Vickers microindentation test. Model of Korsunsky was applied to the experimental data for determination the film hardness and the model of Chen-Gao was used for the adhesion evaluation. The
introduction of ultrasonic agitation caused the changes in the film microstructure, and consequently in the mechanical properties. The copper coatings on
both substrates, have higher hardness when deposited from electrolyte with
ultrasound agitation. Although the type of the substrate has the major influence
on the adhesion strength, it can be said that Cu electrodeposition with ultrasonic mixing contributes to an increase in adhesion

Chen-

AB - Copper coatings are produced on silicon wafer by electrodeposition (ED) for various cathode current densities. The resulting composite systems consist of 10 μm monolayered copper films electrodeposited from sulphate bath on Si wafers with sputtered layers of Cr/Au. Hardness measurements were performed to evaluate properties of the composites. The composite hardness (H c ) was characterized using Vickers microindentation test. Then, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was used to study the relationship between the parameters of metallic composite and their hardness. Two experimental values: applied load during indentation test and current density during the ED process were used as the inputs to the neural network. Finally, the results of the composite hardness (experimental and predicted) were used to estimate the film hardness (H f ) of copper for each variations of the current density. This article shows that ANN is an useful tool in modeling composite hardness change with variation of experimental parameters predicting hardness change of composite Si/Cu with average error of 6 %. Using created ANN model it is possible to predict microhardness of Cu film for current density or indentation load for which we do not have experimental data.

AB - Composite systems of monolayer and multilayer nickel films electrochemically deposited on single crystal (100)-oriented silicon wafers were fabricated with and without the ultrasonic agitation. The hardness and adhesion behaviour of these composite structures were characterized by Vickers microindentation test. The dependence of composite microhardness and film adhesion on the structure of the film and mixing conditions of electrolyte were analysed. Mathematical models of Chicot-Lesage and Chen-Gao were applied to experimental data in order to obtain the film hardness and adhesion parameter respectively. It is confirmed that the mechanical properties of composite systems of nickel thin films on silicon substrate can be enhanced by formation of multilayer film structure by ultrasound-assisted electrodeposition and by reducing the layer thickness in the multilayer film.

AB - This study presents the route for preparation of the membrane-supporting materials with good mechanical behavior and adsorption properties that provide functionality and are easy to use in various environments. Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane-supported hydrogels were prepared via liquid phase inversion process with photopolymerization and monomer crosslinking. The obtained membranes had asymmetric structure containing dense skin on the top of a porous hydrogel as it is verified by scanning electron microscopy. Software analysis of the pore size revealed that fine pores enabled availability of the membrane active centers to metal cations. The membranes with a higher content of the polymer showed significantly improved mechanical properties compared with commonly used ion exchange membranes, which is crucial for the wastewater treatment application. Adsorption kinetics analysis showed that the hydrogel-rich bottom layer has significantly higher adsorption ability in comparison to the top layer. Adsorption kinetics of the bottom side was described by the first-order kinetics model, whereas for the the top side, phase-boundary controlled reaction model was used.

AB - Alternate electrodeposition of ordinary and ultrasonic-assisted Ni layers on polycrystalline copper substrates and single-crystal (100)-oriented silicon wafers was used for the formation of composite systems with nickel thin multilayer films. The hardness and adhesion properties of these composite systems were characterized using Vickers microhardness test, with different loads. Dependence of composite microhardness and film adhesion on type of substrate and layer thickness was investigated. Model of Korsunsky, Chicot-Lesage and Chen-Gao were chosen and applied to experimental data for obtaining the film hardness and adhesion evaluation, respectively. It is confirmed that in comparison with the conventional electrodeposited Ni films, the mechanical properties of the ultrasonic-assisted multilayer Ni films are improved. The microhardness and adhesion of the films are enhanced by introduction of ultrasound and by reducing the layer thickness in the film.

AB - In this study, electrospinning combined with sol-gel technique is applied in order to produce magnetic nickel ferrite (Ni-ferrite) nanofibers. The prepared Ni-ferrite gel was mixed with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) solution which was used as a spinning aid to enable spinnability of the mixture. Structural and morphological characteristics of the asspun ferrite gel/PVP composite web structure and calcinated Ni-ferrite nanofibers were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Phase composition analysis was carried out by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS). The obtained results suggest that the pure nanocrystalline NiFe2O4 dense mat to the almost coral-like structure of fibers with diameters ranging from hundreds of nanometers to few micrometers was obtained. The results of MS analysis revealed the existence of a crystallite size distribution within the material as well as the existence of a superparamagnetic fraction with very small crystallite sizes (<13nm). Magnetic behavior of the obtained material at elevated temperatures was also scrutinized using thermomagnetic measurements (TM) up to 800 degrees C.

AB - The occurrence of different toxic organic and inorganic contaminants in water is an environmental issue that must be addressed to avoid damage to ecosystems and human health. Inspired by this current issue, in this work, we have fabricated multifunctional biochar and activated carbons capable for highly efficient capture, identification and removal of toxic metals, radionuclides, emerging, priority and hazardous priority substances from water samples. To find facile, eco friendly and cost-effective routes for developing multifunctional materials, which have the capability to resolve many of the challenges associated with wastewater problem, here, we report:
 The novel design and synthesis details of multifunctional biochar and
activated carbons which precursors were lignocellulosic raw materials
(sweet/sour cherry, apricot and plum kernels) as fruit processing industry
waste [1];
 Characterization of multifunctional materials performed by elemental
analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy-dispersive X-ray
Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Brunauer,
Emmett and Taller technique [2];
 Detailed evaluation of their capability for highly efficient separation of heavy
metals ions (Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+), chlorophenols, pharmaceutical compounds
(sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine, diclofenac, naproxen, ketoprofen and
ibuprofen) and radionuclides;
 The batch studies performed by varying different process conditions: the
initial pH of the water solution, adsorbent dosage, contact time, temperature
and initial adsorbate concentrations;
 The time dependant adsorption results fitted to four diffusion and four
reaction kinetic models;
Equilibrium data fitted to three isotherm models (for better insight into the
adsorption process);
 Calculated thermodynamic parameters of the process: Gibbs energy,
enthalpy and entropy;
 The best conditions for achieving maximum efficiency of biochar, a carbonrich
low-cost by-product of naturally abundant waste biomass, which
exhibits heterogeneous surface chemistry and strong binding affinity via
oxygen-containing group on the surface [3];
 Desorption and regeneration study results;
 Two-stage CSTR reactor design for the real samples treatment;
 Eco-design of the multifunctional materials production process [4];
 Life cycle assessment, comparative adsorption study and cost analysis of
the process [4].
Performed study showed encouraging results that are highly beneficial for the development of alternative wastewater management technologies, as well as for modern organic waste disposal solution. Fabricated multifunctional biochar and activated carbons were found to be a promising low-cost and eco-friendly solution for the removal of wide range of micropollutants from aqueous waste as part of sustainable technology involving slurry reactors.

AB - Multilayer composite structures of electrodeposited Ni films on polycrystalline copper substrates were fabricated with the assistance of ultrasonic agitation. Alternate ordinary and ultrasonicassisted electrodeposition of Ni layers allowed the formation of laminated films. The adhesion and hardness properties were characterized using bidirectional bending test and Vickers microhardness test with different loads. Dependence of composite microhardness and film adhesion on layer thickness was investigated. It was confirmed that densified parallel interfaces give rise to high hardness and strength of composites. Model of Korsunsky was chosen and applied to experimental data for obtaining the film hardness and model of Chen-Gao was applied for the adhesion evaluation. Compared with the conventional electrodeposited Ni films, the mechanical properties of the ultrasonic-assisted multilayer Ni films are improved. The microhardness and adhesion of the films are enhanced by introduction of ultrasound and by reducing the layer thickness in the film.

AB - Continuous catalytic reforming (CCR) is known to convert refinery naphtha to a high-octane liquid product, also known as the reformate. In this paper, a First Principle Reaction Section Model for a CCR process is presented. Even though CCR is a well-established technology, the application of advanced, real-time optimization techniques that are able to quickly respond to any imposed changes onto the process, are necessary in the refinery business. This becomes particularly important as a result of changes in profit margin, changes in operating cost, and the introduction of new environmental legislations. Hence, we present a kinetic model for the CCR process using the so-called "lumped" concept. The reactors have been modeled using a quasi-steady-state approach. The unknown model parameters have been estimated by bench marking the First Principle Reaction Section results with a commercial CCR process owned by the Hungarian Oil and Gas Public Limited Company (INA-MOL). The proposed model has been tested and compared to data obtained from an existing CCR plant. The predictions of the model were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The relative absolute errors between the measured and model estimated variables have been found to be lower than 2%. The relative absolute error associated with the required fired heater duties were less than 1.0%. Simulating the reaction section of the CCR process requires less than 0.1 s of CPU time, which clearly indicates that this model can be very suitable for performing optimization studies. Moreover, this study shows that, although there is fluctuation in the composition of feedstock, the lumped kinetic approach was capable to predict the behavior of the CCR process well.

AB - Microhardness test is the most commonly used
method for assessing the mechanical properties of thin films.This testing method uses controlled contact at a single point of an indenter and chosen material which induces the plastic deformation in material under indenter. The measured hardness is considered as the composite hardness, because the substrate
participates in the plastic deformation caused by indentation. This research has been carried out in order to analyze and compare the hardness response of different composite systems consist of monolayer electrodeposited copper thin film on brass and steel alloys as the substrates. The influence of the electrodeposition parameters and of the substrate on the hardness and interlayer adhesion were investigated by Vickers microhardness testing for different load.

AB - The Nd-Fe-B-barium ferrite hybrid composite materials with epoxy matrix presented in this paper cover maximum energy product from 1 to 13 MGOe. Mixture of magnetic particles is responsible for high magnetic quality, while the thermosetting resin plays a role in mechanical properties. Samples with various ratio of Nd-Fe-B to barium ferrite in constant weight of epoxy resin are examined by tensile strength measurements. Magnetic measurements carried out by using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) show typical hysteresis loop. A structural analysis of composite surface is conducted by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Uniform particle distribution of plate shape Nd-Fe-B particles and spherical barium ferrite agglomerates is essential for both, mechanical and magnetic properties of composite materials. Fine particles are incorporated in-between larger particles in epoxy bulk which lead to improving the properties.

AB - We propose a systematic model for the optimum design of Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) used for power generation from multiple heat sources available at different temperatures. The model enables the automated generation of inclusive and flexible ORC cascades and is optimized using a global optimization algorithm. Design parameters include the number of ORC cascades, the shared structure of the heat exchanger network, the operating conditions and the working fluid used in each cascade in order to identify an overall ORC structure that maximizes the power output. Results indicate significant operating improvements from using a double ORC cascade with different working fluids.

AB - This work presents a systematic approach toward the design of Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) for the generation of power from multiple heat sources available at different temperature levels. The design problem is approached in a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) formulation where an inclusive and flexible ORC model is automatically evolved by a deterministic algorithm for global optimization. The basic building block of the model is the ORC cascade which consists of a heat extraction, a power generation, a condensation and a liquid pressurization section. The aim of the optimization is to determine the optimum number of ORC cascades, the structure of the heat exchanger network shared among different cascades, the operating conditions and the working fluid used in each cascade in order to identify an overall ORC structure that maximizes the power output. The approach is illustrated through a case study which indicates that a system of two waste heat sources is best exploited through two interconnected ORC utilizing different working fluids.

AB - Thin copper films were electrodeposited on a polycrystalline cold-rolled copper substrate. The composition of the laboratory-made copper sulphate electrolyte was changed by the addition of various additives. The influence of chloride ion (Cl-), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and 3-mercapto-1-propane sulfonic acid (MPSA) on mechanical and adhesion properties of the electrodeposited copper films was investigated using Vickers microindentation technique. Calculations of the film hardness and adhesion were carried out using composite hardness models of Korsunsky and Chen-Gao. The hardness of the composite system is influenced by the adhesion of the copper film to the substrate. Increasing adhesion corresponds to increasing values of the calculated adhesion parameter b, named the critical reduced depth. When additives are added to a plating solution, the copper deposition mechanism is changed and fine-grained microstructure without the formation of microscopic nodules is obtained.

AB - The natural balance in the Earth's atmosphere is significantly influenced by the human emission of the combustion products, mainly carbon dioxide. Therefore, strong efforts are directed in the direction of the reduction of that emission. The solution might be searched in the direction of the construction of the membrane that would be highly transparent to the carbon dioxide, but not transparent to the other gases commonly present in the waste gases (oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, methane). One of the feasible designs for this purpose is dense, non-porous membranes, with zeolite particles dispersed in the polymer matrix. Zeolite particles should increase the solubility of the carbon dioxide, and thus enhance its permeability. In this paper, the possibility of application of polyether-b-amide (with 60% of PEG) as a polymer matrix was tested. For the inorganic component, four different zeolite types with three different pore geometries were tested. The influence of the additive which was added in order to provide good contact between the highly polar and charged zeolite inorganic particle, and hydrophobic polymer chains was also tested.
