AB - Ironwort (Sideritis montana L.), mountain germander (Teucrium montanum L.), wall germander (Teucrium chamaedrys L.), and horehound (Marrubium peregrinum L.) are species widely distributedacross Europe and are also found in North Africa and West Asia. Because of their wide distributionthey express significant chemical diversity. For generations, these plants have been used as medicalherbs for treating different aliments. The aim of this paper is to analyze volatile compounds of fourselected species that belong to the subfamily Lamioideae, family Lamiaceae, and inspect scientificallyproven biological activities and potential uses in modern phytotherapy in relation to traditionalmedicine. Therefore, in this research, we analyze the volatile compounds from this plants, obtainedin laboratory by a Clevenger-type apparatus, followed by liquid–liquid extraction with hexane as thesolvent. The identification of volatile compounds is conducted by GC-FID and GC-MS. Althoughthese plants are poor in essential oil, the most abundant class of volatile components are mainlysesquiterpenes: germacrene D (22.6%) in ironwort, 7-epi-trans-sesquisabinene hydrate (15.8%) inmountain germander, germacrene D (31.8%) and trans-caryophyllene (19.7%) in wall germander, andtrans-caryophyllene (32.4%) and trans-thujone (25.1%) in horehound. Furthermore, many studiesshow that, in addition to the essential oil, these plants contain phenols, flavonoids, diterpenes andditerpenoids, iridoids and their glycosides, coumarins, terpenes, and sterols, among other activecompounds, which affect biological activities. The other goal of this study is to review the literaturethat describes the traditional use of these plants in folk medicine in regions where they grow spontaneously and compare them with scientifically confirmed activities. Therefore, a bibliographic searchis conducted on Science Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar to gather information related to thetopic and recommend potential applications in modern phytotherapy. In conclusion, we can say thatselected plants could be used as natural agents for promoting health, as a source of raw materialin the food industry, and as supplements, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry for developingplant-based remedies for prevention and treatment of many diseases, especially cancer.

AB - This research investigated a Balkan endemic species, Achillea clypeolata, collected from two locations (Dobrostan and Ivaylovgrad) in Bulgaria and two locations (Ozren and Rtanj) in Serbia. The goal was to compare the essential oil (EO) of A. clypeolata from these four localities. The EO was isolated from dry aboveground plant parts by hydrodistillation, and the identification of the EO constituents was carried out by GC-MS analyses. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), correlation analysis, and an unrooted cluster tree were used to define distinctions in the presence of volatile compounds in A. clypeolata EO. Results showed that A. clypeolata of Serbian origin (Ozren and Rtanj) contained 1,8-cineole as the main constituent, and belonged to the previously described 1,8-cineole as a dominant compound in the EO profile. On the other hand, the results from Bulgaria show an evident chemical diversification within the A. clypeolata species, as 1,8-cineole (23.2%), camphor (5.0%) and borneol (8.9%) prevailed in the EO of the studied samples collected from Ivaylovgrad, while borneol (22.6%), β-eudesmol (12.7%) and elemol (7.8%) were the main ones in the EO from Dobrostan. In sillico analysis revealed the high anti-inflammatory potential of A. clypeolata, which may be highly diverse depending on the population and active compounds it contains.

AB - Fluorinated piperidines find wide applications, most notably in the development of novel therapies and agrochemicals. Cyclization of alkenyl N-tosylamides promoted by BF3-activated aryliodine(III) carboxylates is an attractive strategy to construct 3-fluoropiperidines, but it suffers from selectivity issues arising from competitive oxoaminations and the inability to easily modulate the reactions diastereoselectivity. Herein, we report an itemized optimization of the reaction conditions carried out on both cyclic and acyclic substrates and outline the origins of substrate- and reagent-based stereo-, regio-, and chemoselectivity. Extensive mechanistic studies encompassing multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, deuterium labeling, rearrangements on stereodefined substrates, and careful structural analyses (NMR and X-ray) of the reaction products are performed. This revealed the processes and interactions crucial for achieving controlled preparation of 3-fluoropiperidines using I(III) chemistry and has provided an advanced understanding of the reaction mechanism. In brief, we propose that BF3-coordinated I(III) reagents attack C═C to produce the corresponding iodiranium(III) ion, which then undergoes diastereodetermining 5-exo-cyclization. Transiently formed pyrrolidines with an exocyclic σ-alkyl-I(III) moiety can further undergo aziridinium ion formation or reductive ligand coupling processes, which dictate not only the final product’s ring size but also the chemoselectivity. Importantly, the selectivity of the reaction depends on the nature of the ligand bound to I(III) and the presence of electrolytes such as TBABF4. Reported findings will facilitate the usage of ArI(III)-dicarboxylates in the reliable construction of fluorinated azaheterocycles.

AB - Interest in Cd complexes has been growing in recent years. Cd complexes are considered a potential solution in the search for novel antibiotics that can fight antimicrobial resistance. In addition, Cd complexes draw attention to material chemistry. The main objective of this work was to prepare the first Cd(II) complexes with anionic forms of pyridine-based thiazolyl hydrazone (THs) ligands HLS2 [(E)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(2-[pyridine-2-ylmethylene]hydrazinyl)thiazole] and HLS3 [(E)-2-(2-[pyridine-2-ylmethylene]hydrazinyl)-4-(p-tolyl)thiazole] and perform their structural and spectroscopic characterization, as well as stability in solution and upon heating. Studies related to their biological activities and possible electrochromic applications are also being conducted. Complexes [Cd(HLS2)2] (1) and [Cd(HLS3)2] (2) have been characterized by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction and computational analysis of intermolecular interactions responsible for their solid-state structures was performed. Thermal stability of 1 and 2 in the solid-state was analyzed by TGA/MS, where as their solution stability was determined by the spectrophotometric titration method. Electrochemical and in situ UV–Vis spectroelectrochemical analyses of 1 and 2 were carried out to determine redox mechanisms and the influence of the substituents and electrolytes on their redox responses. The antioxidant capacity of both complexes was tested in antioxidant assays, while their antimicrobial activity was tested against five Gram-positive and four Gram-negative bacteria, as well as against three fungi. The obtained results indicate their potent antioxidant capacity. The antimicrobial activity of investigated compounds on almost all tested bacterial strains was stronger than that of the standard antibiotic erythromycin. The results of docking studies indicate that the minor groove DNA is the possible biological target of 1 and 2.

AB - In this paper, the optimal preparative conditions (current density, deposition temperature, calcination temperature) for the original electrochemical synthesis of ZnO-Zn coating on aluminum foil support (ZnAF) were examined and determined the application for the removal of methyl orange (MO). Optimal application conditions for removing MO (volume and concentration of a treated solution) were also determined. In the following, four immobilized ZnO/Fe2O3 photocatalysts with different molar ratios of Zn to Fe (0.42, 0.84, 1.68, and 3.36) were synthesized via the chemical precipitation method on optimized electrochemically synthesized ZnAF support. Characterization studies of synthesized materials included SEM–EDS and Raman scattering analyses. The efficiency of these catalysts for MO removal in the presence/absence of simulated solar radiation (SSR) was investigated. The adsorption isotherms were investigated, and the results show that the adsorption data were best fitted with the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model. Assessment of the thermodynamic parameters showed that although the adsorption process was weakly endothermic over the range of temperatures studied, the relatively high entropy change gave an overall negative change in Gibbs free energy making the processes spontaneous. In the presence of SSR, the optimal molar ratio of Zn to Fe was determined to be 1.68. The possibility of potential reusing the catalyst was examined six times in a row. The possibility for multiple uses of suspension, which is used for immobilization, was also examined. It was also determined that the application of the 1.68Zn/Fe/ZnAF/H2O2/SSR system after the dye removal generates hydrogen at a rate of 186.5 μmol g−1 after 6 h. Furthermore, in the presence of SSR and using a suspended form of catalyst, the removal efficiency was 1.6 times higher than the efficiency achieved with immobilized ZnO/Fe2O3 catalyst. Using the HPLC method for 1.68Zn/Fe/ZnAF/SSR system, five primary intermediates were found to be formed. The applicability of ZnO/Fe2O3/ZnAF for removal of other dyes was also examined. abstract = "In this paper, the optimal preparative conditions (current density, deposition temperature, calcination temperature) for the original electrochemical synthesis of ZnO-Zn coating on aluminum foil support (ZnAF) were examined and determined the application for the removal of methyl orange (MO). AB - Unlike other studies that only determined the chemical composition of essential oils depending on their geographic origin, this research investigated the effect of weather conditions (temperature, precipitation, and insolation) on the chemical composition of Nepeta nuda L. essential oil. The collection of wild-growing N. nuda was carried out during three successive years, 2019, 2020, and 2021 at Rtanj Mountain (Serbia) on the same date (July 7th). Essential oil extraction from the plant was performed by hydro-distillation. After gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, a total of 102 volatile compounds were separated from N. nuda, during the observed period, 28 were unidentified, compromising between 5.0% and 8.7%, depending on the year. A multiple linear regression model was created, and statistical analyses were performed to provide knowledge about the prediction, feature profile, and the similarity in contents of active compounds of the N. nuda essential oil. The influence of temperature on the accumulation of the most abundant component, 1,8-cineole, was positive, while the impact of precipitation and insolation was negative. According to the cluster tree, there are four chemotypes of N. nuda essential oil: with nepetalactone, 1,8-cineole, mixed (nepetalactone+1,8-cineole+germacrene D), and nonspecific chemotypes. Bearing in mind that the biological activity of a raw material depends on the chemotype and environmental factors, this is a topic that deserves a more detailed approach. The N. nuda and its essential oil are promising materials with high biological potential, and these deserve further detailed investigation.

AB - This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition of steam distillate essential oil and corresponding hydrolate obtained from S. officinalis grown in Serbia, as well as the influence of weather conditions (temperature and precipitations) on their chemical profiles. Furthermore, their antimicrobial activity was investigated in vitro. The main compounds in essential oil were cis-thujone, followed by camphor, trans-thujone, and 1,8-cineole, while hydrolate was slightly different from the essential oil, with camphor, cis-thujone, and 1,8-cineole as the main compounds. Among the eight respiratory-associated microorganisms, Klebsiella oxytoca was the most sensitive to the tested EOs (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)/minimal bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC) were 14.20 and 28.4 μL mL−1, respectively). MIC and MBC values of other tested bacteria ranged between 28.40 and 227.25 μL mL−1 while for Candida albicans MIC/MFC ranged from 28.40/56.81 to 56.81–113.63 μL mL−1. Antibiotic susceptibility patterns for the analyzed eight respiratory-associated microorganisms showed an intermediate level of resistance to commonly used antibiotics such as ampicillin, levofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin. As a preliminary approach to the antimicrobial profiling of the tested EO, the obtained results revealed that the tested samples possess remarkable antibacterial activities and could be used to develop pharmaceutical formulations as an alternative to conventional antibiotic therapy.

AB - Aims Because the Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most well‐known pathogens associated with medical devices and nosocomial infections, the aim of the study was to examine antibiofilm potential of emodin against it. Methods and Results Antibacterial activity was examined through microdilution assay. Antibiofilm testing included crystal violet staining of biofilm biomass and morphology analysis by Atomic force microscopy (AFM). Furthermore, aerobic respiration was monitored using the Micro‐Oxymax respirometer. For investigation of gene expression qRT‐PCR was performed. Emodin demonstrated strong antibacterial activity and ability to inhibit biofilm formation of all tested strains. The effect on preformed biofilms was spotted in few strains. AFM revealed that emodin affects biofilm structure and roughness. Monitoring of respiration under emodin treatment in planktonic and biofilm form revealed that emodin influenced aerobic respiration. Moreover, qRT‐PCR showed that emodin modulates expression of icaA, icaD, srrA and srrB genes, as well as RNAIII, and that this activity was strain‐specific. Conclusion The results obtained in this study indicate the novel antibiofilm activity of emodin and its multiple pathways of action. Significance and Impact of Study This is the first study that examined pathways through which emodin expressed its antibiofilm activity

AB - Ethylene glycol is recognized as a heat transfer fluid. To improve its performance, caffeine is added to pure ethylene glycol. The experimental measurements of densities at pressures of up to 60 MPa and in the range of temperatures 293.15-413.15 K were performed. Obtained experimental results were fitted by the modified Tammann-Tait equation, and parameters were used to determine some valuable thermodynamic and mechanical properties, the isothermal compressibility, the isobaric thermal expansibility, the internal pressure, and the difference of specific heat capacity at constant pressure and constant volume. The same approach was applied to the equimolar mixture of ethylene glycol and water. The results confirm negligible changes in the investigated thermodynamic properties with the addition of caffeine into pure ethylene glycol and significantly smaller dependence on temperature compared to the mixture of ethylene glycol and water.

AB - Garden rose, Rosa hybrida, is primarily used for decoration and has a wide range of growing
area, contrary to R. damascena that has a limited area of distribution (Turkey and Bulgaria), yet it is
extensively used for commercial production of valuable and expensive rose oil. Since the content of
essential oil in rose petals is low (0.03–0.04%), its production is quite limited; however, during this
process, a significant amount of rose hydrosol is obtained as a secondary product. The aim of this
research was to determine the chemical composition of garden rose hydrosols and to evaluate their
biological properties. Obtained results show that R. hybrida hydrosol containing phenylethyl alcohol,
nerol, linalool, and geraniol may be used as an alternative for R. damascena hydrosol. However, the
total phenolic content was quite low (4.96 _g GAE/mL), which is related to a low level of observed
antioxidant activity based on different antioxidant activity assays. Furthermore, R. hybrida hydrosol
did not exhibit antimicrobial activity against several gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as
well as yeast and fungi. Anti-inflammatory activity was also low, while no antihyperglycemic activity
was detected. With these results in mind, no potential is evident for the therapeutic application of
rose hydrosol beyond that found in complimentary medicine such as aromatherapy.

was detected. With these results in mind, no potential is evident for the therapeutic application of
rose hydrosol beyond that found in complimentary medicine such as aromatherapy.",

The efficiency оf these catalysts for methyl orange removal in the presence оf simulated solar radiation (SSR) was investigated. The оptimal mоlar ratiо of Zn towards Fe, in the presence оf the SSR, was 1.68. The pоssibility оf potential reusing the catalyst was examined six times in a row. It was determined thаt the application of the 1.68Zn/Fe/ZnAF/H2O2/SSR system after the dye removal generates hydrogen at a rate of 186.5 μmol g-1 after 6 h. Using the HPLC method for 1.68Zn/Fe/ZnAF/SSR system, five primary intermediates were found to be formed.

AB - Derivatives of thiocarbohydrazone studied so far have shown great biological activity such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and
anticancer. Most of these compounds are bis-substituted derivatives, while monothiocarbohydrazones are much less investigated.
Еighteen monothiocarbohydrazones were synthesized and subjected to physicochemical characterization in order to facilitate the
examination of their potential biological activity and application in future studies. The structure of synthesized derivatives was
confirmed with NMR and FT–IR spectroscopy, and with elemental analysis. For one of the compounds, single-crystal X-ray
diffraction analysis was performed. Specific and non-specific molecular interactions were interpreted by LSER principles, using
Catalan’s model. For additional information about the dominance and influence of the interactions presented, correlations with
Hansen’s solubility parameters were calculated. Influence of the type and position of the substituent on absorption maxima was
determined with LFER (linear free-energy relationship) principles, using Hammett’s equation. Acidity constants of the synthesized
compounds were theoretically calculated and experimentally determined. Moreover, the excitation of a molecule by a
photon of UV–Vis light was interpreted by time-dependent density functional theory (TD–DFT) calculations of UV absorption
bands, and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) was quantified by calculations of the charge transfer distances (DCT).

AB - In this work, carbon paste electrode (CPE) and carbon paste electrode modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs/CPE) were employed with rapid direct anodic square wave voltammetry (SWV) for macrolide antibiotics erythromycin ethylsuccinate (EES), azithromycin (AZI), clarithromycin (CLA) and roxithromycin (ROX) determination. The surface
of working electrodes was morphologically characterized by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) measurements whereby the presence of randomly distributed AuNPs of 10 nmdiameter size on CPE surface was confirmed by energy dispersive
spectrometer (EDS). SWV determination of four macrolide antibiotics using CPE was performed in aqueous Britton-Robinson buffer solutions (pH 2.0 to 11.98) showing that oxidation signals strongly depend upon pH (at pH ≥ 6) and exhibited the most favorable characteristics at pH 8.0 in the case of EES and pH 11.98 in the case of AZI, CLA and ROX. Under optimized conditions, the SWV method using CPE enables determination of all investigated macrolide antibiotics in low μg mL−1 concentration ranges with relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 6%
and achieved detection limits (LODs) as 0.18, 0.045, 1.43 and 0.30 μgmL−1 for EES, AZI, CLA and ROX, respectively. In the case of AZI and ROX, it was demonstrated that the use of AuNPs/CPE as working electrode could additionally improve the results obtained with the SWV method concerning exhibited sensitivity, reproducibility and linear concentration
range, due to the electrocatalytic properties of synthesized AuNPs. The optimized experimental parameters with the use of SWV method and CPE or AuNPs/CPE were successfully applied for determination of ROX and AZI in their pharmaceutical preparations Runac® and Hemomycin®, respectively. The reliability of the elaborated procedures and thus the accuracy of the obtained results were validated by comparing them with those obtained by means of HPLC-DAD measurements.

The surface
of working electrodes was morphologically characterized by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) measurements whereby the presence of randomly distributed AuNPs of 10 nmdiameter size on CPE surface was confirmed by energy dispersive
spectrometer (EDS). AB - Five NiO/TiO2 materials with a different mass ratiо оf NiO tо TiO2 (3.3, 6.7, 16.3, 23.7, and 36.8%) were synthesized by wet impregnation process and characterized by DR UV-vis, scanning electrоn micrоscоpe, transmissiоn electrоn micrоscоpy, X-ray diffractiоn methоd, N2 physisorption, and temperature-programmed reduction. The characterizatiоn confirmed the existence of nano-sized cubic NiO on the commercial TiО2. The оbserved interactiоn between TiO2 and NiО phases confirmed that the оbtained material dоes nоt constitute a physical mixture оf twо species. The photocatalytic hydrоgen generatiоn efficiency [mоnitored by gas chromatography–thermal conductivity detector (GC-TCD)] of these materials from methanol-water mixtures under simulated solar radiation and artificial UV radiation was investigated. For some synthesized NiO/TiO2 materials, higher photocatalytic efficiency was found compared with the commercial TiO2 Degussa P25 catalyst. Also, the obtained results showed that 0.125 g L−1 of 6.7%NiO/TiO2 and 5% (v/v) of methanol were the optimal operating parameters. Furthermоre, fоr the mоst efficient phоtоcatalytic system under the influence оf simulated solar radiation, a 1.8 times higher hydrоgen prоduction rate was achieved cоmpared tо that under the influence оf artificial UV radiatiоn.
