AB - The short survey of the dependence of the shape of electrolytically produced powder particles on the exchange current density for metal deposition and overpotential for hydrogen evolution reaction is presented. The decrease of the exchange current density leads to a branching of dendrites and their transformation from needle-like and the two-dimensional (2D) fern-like to the three-dimensional (3D) pine-like shapes. Vigorous hydrogen evolution inhibits the dendritic growth leading to a formation of cauliflower-like and the spongy-like particles. The very thin needles were obtained by molten salt electrolysis. Mechanisms responsible for the formation of both the dendritic (the general theory of disperse deposits formation) and the cauliflower-like and the spongy-like particles (the concept of „effective overpotential”) were also mentioned.

AB - The results of experimental studies of the properties of composite materials based on Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) matrix filled with electrolytic copper powder, having very high dendritic structure, are presented in this manuscript. Copper powder volume fractions used as filler in all prepared composites were varied in the range of 0.4-7.2 vol. %. The samples were prepared by hot moulding injection at 140°C. Influence of morphology on the conductivity and percolation threshold of the composites was examined and characterization included: Electrical conductivity measurements using Impedance Spectroscopy (IS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Presence of three dimensional conductive pathways was confirmed. The obtained percolation threshold was 2.72 vol.%, which is about three times lower than the one stated in the literature for similar composites. This property is ascribed to different morphology of filler used in investigation.

AB - The processes of electrodeposition from magnesium nitrate hexahydrate melt by galvanostatic regime of electrolysis
have been analyzed. The structure of the formed particles was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD),
which revealed formation of MgO/Mg(OH)2 mixture by molten salt electrolysis. Morphologies of the produced
deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. The flower-like forms constructed
from very thin needles with sharp tips were predominately formed by electrodeposition at various
current densities and with various amounts of electricity. Aside from that, holes formed from detached hydrogen
bubbles of various shapes and sizes, from dish-like holes to those resulting in honeycomb-like structures were
also observed. Mechanism of formation of the flower-like forms has been elucidated applying the general theory
of disperse deposits formation which is based on the concept of local (spherical and cylindrical) diffusion fields.
It is shown that the growth of the needles occurs under the conditions of predominant spherical diffusion control,
while the contribution of the cylindrical diffusion to the final shapes was negligible. Comparison with
morphologies of deposits obtained by electrodepositions from aqueous magnesium salt electrolytes was also
made and discussed.

AB - Three different forms of Cu powder particles obtained by either galvanostatic electrolysis or a non-electrolytic method were analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and particle size distribution (PSD). Electrolytic procedures were performed under different hydrogen evolution conditions, leading to the formation of either 3D branched dendrites or disperse cauliflower-like particles. The third type of particles were compact agglomerates of the Cu grains, whose structural characteristics indicated that they were formed by a non-electrolytic method. Unlike the sharp tips that characterize the usual form of Cu dendrites, the ends of both the trunk and branches were globules in the formed dendrites, indicating that a novel type of Cu dendrites was formed in this investigation. Although the macro structures of the particles were extremely varied, they had very similar micro structures because they were constructed by spherical grains. The Cu crystallites were randomly oriented in the dendrites and compact agglomerates of the Cu grains, while the disperse cauliflower-like particles showed (220) and (311) preferred orientation. This indicates that the applied current density affects not only the morphology of the particles, but also their crystal structure. The best performance, defined by the largest specific surface area and the smallest particle size, was by the galvanostatically produced powder consisting of disperse cauliflower-like particles.

AB - Production of copper powders by the potentiostatic electrolysis under different hydrogen evolution conditions was investigated. Copper powders were characterized by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size distribution (PSD), and by the determination of the specific surface area (SSA) of the formed powders. Depending on quantity of hydrogen generated during electrolysis, the two types of particles were formed: dendrites and cauliflower-like particles. The dendrites were formed without, while cauliflower-like particles with the quantity of evolved hydrogen enough to achieve strong effect on hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer. Although macro structure of the particles was very different, they showed similar micro structure. Namely, both types of the particles consisted of small agglomerates of approximately spherical Cu grains at the micro level. The existence of the spherical morphology was just responsible for random orientation of Cu crystallites in both types of particles. The SSA of cauliflower-like particles was more than two times larger than that of the dendrites, while their size was considerably smaller than that of the dendritic particles. In this way, the useful benefit of Cu powder formation in the conditions of vigorous hydrogen evolution is shown.

abstract = "Production of copper powders by the potentiostatic electrolysis under different hydrogen evolution conditions was investigated. In this way, the useful benefit of Cu powder formation in the conditions of vigorous hydrogen evolution is shown.",

AB - The morphologies of copper dendritic forms obtained in both potentiostatic and galvanostatic regimes of electrolysis with various amounts of the electricity were analyzed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. Irrespective of amount of passed electricity, 3D (three dimensional) pine-like dendrites with sharp tips were formed in the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis. On the other hand, the amount of passed electricity had a strong effect on the shape of the 3D pine-like dendrites formed in the galvanostatic regime of electrolysis. Dendrites with sharp tips were formed with smaller amount of passed electricity, while dendrites with globular tips were formed with larger amounts. The change in the shape of the galvanostatically synthesized 3D pine-like dendrites was explained by comparison with copper deposits obtained potentiostatically at overpotentials that corresponded to the final overpotentials during galvanostatic regime of electrolysis for the analyzed amounts of electricity. Based on the similarity of the obtained morphologies at the macro level, it was concluded that the overpotential plays a crucial role in the formation of the electrolytically synthesized dendrites and that the controlled conditions of electrolysis could represent a suitable way for a synthesis of spherical Cu particles by electrolysis.

AB - This manuscript presents the results of investigating the properties of composite materials having poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) matrix filled with electrolytically produced copper powder whose particles have a highly developed branched structure. The volume fraction of the copper powder used as a filler for the preparation of the composite was varied from 0.4 to 7.2 vol. %. The samples were prepared at 140 °C by hot molding injection. The effect of the morphology of electrolytically obtained copper powder on the appearance of the percolation threshold and on the conductivity of the composites was studied. Characterization included impedance spectroscopy (IS) measurement of electric conductivity and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) morphological analysis. Electric conductive pathways were formed throughout the entire volume of the composites, where their formation was purely stochastic in all the dimensions. The percolation threshold was 2.72 vol.%, which is significantly lower than the one stated in the literature for similar composites, since these kind of composites are investigated for the first time. This property can be attributed to the use of a filler of different, diverse morphologies.

AB - Electrodeposition of copper in the hydrogen co-deposition range by the regime of reversing current (RC) in the second range has been investigated by determination of the average current efficiency for hydrogen evolution reaction and by scanning electron (SEM) and optical (OM) microscopic analysis of the obtained deposits. Keeping the cathodic current density, the cathodic and the anodic pulses constant in all experiments, the anodic current density (ja) values were varied: 40, 80, 160, 240 and 320 mA cm−2. The Cu deposits produced by the RC regimes with different anodic current density values were compared with that obtained in a constant galvanostatic regime (DC) at the current density equal to the cathodic current density in the RC regimes. The honeycomb-like structures were formed in the DC regime and by the RC regimes with ja of 40 and 80 mA cm−2. The hole size in them was in the 60–70 μm range. Due to the decrease of quantity of evolved hydrogen with increasing anodic current density, the larger dish-like holes with dendrites at their bottom and shoulder were formed with ja values of 160, 240 and 320 mA cm−2. The maximum number of holes, and hence, the largest specific surface area of the honeycomb-like electrodes was obtained with ja = 80 mA cm−2, that can be ascribed to a suppression of coalescence of neighboring hydrogen bubbles. Application of the RC regime also led to the increase of uniformity of structures, what is concluded by cross section analysis of the formed honeycomb-like electrodes. For the first time, mechanism of Cu electrodeposition in the hydrogen co-deposition range by the RC regime in the second range was proposed and discussed.

AB - The processes of electrochemical deposition of magnesium oxide/hydroxide on glassy carbon (GC) electrode from magnesium nitrate hexahydrate melt have been investigated. A novel procedure predicting a possibility of direct formation of magnesium oxide during electrodeposition from the nitrate melt used is reported. XRD analysis of the obtained deposits showed the formation of magnesium oxide along with magnesium hydroxide. The electrodeposition of magnesium oxide/hydroxide commences in magnesium underpotential (UPD) and continues through the magnesium overpotential (OPD) region. Network of individual or intertwined very thin needles as well as those grouped in flower-like aggregates or honeycomb-like structures were formed in both magnesium UPD and OPD regions. Formation of the long needles was explained through theories of mechanisms of dendrite formation. Hydrogen evolution commences in the magnesium OPD region and increases with the applied overpotential. Holes observed in the deposit originated from the detached hydrogen bubbles. The number, shape and size of the hole strongly depended on both the applied cathodic potential and the hold time of electrodeposition. Magnesium oxides/hydroxides syntheses taking part simultaneously at various applied potentials are a result of reactions between magnesium cations and products of water and nitrate anions reduction processes. Chemical reactions responsible for direct formation of magnesium oxide observed are those of magnesium ions and oxygen ions, formed by nitrate reduction taking part in the close vicinity of the working electrode.

AB - The results of experimental studies of the properties of composite materials based on poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) matrix filled with electrolytic copper powder, having very high dendritic structure, are presented in this manuscript. Copper powder volume fractions used as filler in all prepared composites were varied in the range of 0.5-6.0 vol. %. The samples were prepared by hot moulding injection at 170°C. Influence of particle morphology on the conductivity and percolation threshold of the composites were examined and characterization included: Electrical conductivity measurements using AC Impedance Spectroscopy (IS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Presence of three dimensional conductive pathways was confirmed. The obtained percolation threshold of 2.97 vol. % for PLG composites was measured, which is about three times lower than the one stated in the literature for similar composites. This property is ascribed to different morphology of filler used in investigation.

AB - Synthesis of the honeycomb-like MgO/Mg(OH)(2) structures, with controlled shape and size of holes, by the electrolysis from magnesium nitrate hexahydrate melt onto glassy carbon is presented. The honeycomb-like structures were made up of holes, formed from detached hydrogen bubbles, surrounded by walls, built up of thin intertwined needles. For the first time, it was shown that the honeycomb-like structures can be obtained by molten salt electrolysis and not exclusively by electrolysis from aqueous electrolytes. Analogies with the processes of the honeycomb-like metal structures formation from aqueous electrolytes are presented and discussed. Rules established for the formation of these structures from aqueous electrolytes, such as the increase of number of holes, the decrease of holes size and coalescence of neighbouring hydrogen bubbles observed with increasing cathodic potential, appeared to be valid for the electrolysis of the molten salt used.

AB - Silver powders produced by both electrochemical (galvanostatic (DC) and potentiostatic (POT) regimes of electrolysis) and chemical processes were examined by scanning electron microscope, and particle size distribution (PSD) of the obtained particles was done. In the DC regime, the current densities of -14.4 mA cm-2 for the nitrate (NIT; powder denoted with DC(NIT)) and -13.05 mA cm-2 for the ammonium (AM; DC(AM)) electrolytes were applied. In the POT regime, the used overpotentials were -90 mV (NIT(90)) and -150 mV (NIT(150)) for the nitrate, and -625 mV (AM(625)) and -925 mV (AM(925)) for the ammonium electrolytes. Reduction with hydrazine was used for chemical synthesis (powder denoted with HYD). On the basis of SEM and PSD analysis, Ag powders were grouped into three groups. In the first group DC(AM), AM(925) and HYD powders with the (8.4-8.9 %) volume ratios were placed. In the second group were AM(625) and DC(NIT) powders with the (6.5-6.6 %) volume ratios. NIT(90) and NIT(150) powders with the volume ratios of (5.2-5.7 %) made the third group. The obtained volume ratios were correlated with the morphology of synthesized particles in order to perceive advantages and lacks of powder production via electrochemical and chemical routes.

AB - Lead and nickel powder particles were produced by the processes of electrolysis and characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the produced particles was done. Morphologies of Pb and Ni particles were correlated with their crystal structure at the semi quantitative level by determination of 'Texture Coefficients' (TC) and 'Relative Texture Coefficient' (RTC). The two dimensional (2D) dendritic particles of lead of different degree of ramification were obtained by the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis from the nitrate, acetate and hydroxide electrolyte. The spongy-like particles of nickel constructed from holes formed of the detached hydrogen bubbles and surrounded by cauliflower-like agglomerates of approximately spherical grains (the honeycomb-like structure) were obtained by the galvanostatic regime of electrolysis from the chloride electrolyte. Although crystallites were dominantly oriented in the (111) plane in both Pb and Ni particles, analysis of the XRD data showed different preferred orientation of the formed particles. All types of Pb dendritic particles showed the strong (111) preferred orientation, while crystallites of Ni in the spongy-like particles were almost random oriented. The obtained results were discussed following Winand's classification of metals on the normal, intermediate and inert metals based on their values of the exchange current density, melting point and overpotential for hydrogen evolution reaction.

AB - Silver dendritic nanonstructures obtained by the potentiostatic electrolysis from different electrolytes at different overpotentials were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique and X-ray diffraction analysis of the produced particles. The needle-like and fern-like dendrites were formed from the nitrate electrolyte at overpotentials inside and outside plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density, respectively. The three-dimensional pine-like dendrites constructed from approximately spherical grains were formed from the ammonium electrolyte at overpotentials both inside and outside plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density. The morphology of silver dendrites was correlated with their crystal structure at the semi quantiative level. The change of crystal orientation from the strong (111) preferred orientation for the needle-like dendrites to almost randomly orientied spherical grains in the pine-like dendrites obtained at the overpotential outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density was observed. This trend in change of crystal orientation and morphology of Ag nanostructures was accompanied by considerable increase of the specific surface area (SSA) of the produced powders. The average crystallite sizes were in the range of 38-50 nm, proving nanostructural character of the formed Ag particles.

AB - The results of experimental studies of the properties of composite materials based on poly(methylmetacrylate) (PMMA) matrices filled with electrolytic copper powder, having very high dendritic structure, are presented in this manuscript. Copper powder volume fractions used as filler in all prepared composites were varied in the range of 0.5 - 8.8 %(v/v). The samples were prepared by hot molding injection at 180 degrees C. Influence of particle size and morphology on the conductivity and percolation threshold and thermal properties of the composites were examined and characterization included: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Atomic Forces Microscopy (AFM). Composites have shown improvement of thermal characteristics in relation to pure polymer. Presence of three dimensional conductive pathways was confirmed. The obtained percolation threshold of 2.89 %(v/v) is about three times lower than the one stated in the literature, which is ascribed to different morphology of filler used in investigation.

AB - Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is the most suitable biocompatible material for bone implant coatings. However, its brittleness is a major obstacle, and that is why, recently, research focused on creating composites. In this study, a novel in situ synthesis of HAp coating on titanium was presented. HAp was anaphoretically deposited from alkaline-ethanol suspension in one step process. Morphology of the coating was investigated by optical microscopy, while deposited HAp was characterized using ATR-FTIR. It was concluded that HAp has excellent coverage of the surface without delamination. The obtained coating can be good material for bone implants due to solving HAp brittleness.

AB - In this study, La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 (LSC) powder and LSC doped with 20 wt.% RuO2 were investigated as anode materials for supercapacitor. Spherical submicron particles of La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 have been synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. Morphology of LSC powder was examined by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Both powders were examined by X-ray diffraction, which indicated that substitution of Ru for Sr and Co in the base strongly increased the electrocatalytic activity of the oxide. Electrochemical characterization results have shown improvement in capacitive characteristics of doped LSC showing that this material is good prerequisite for supercapacitor.

AB - The particle size distribution and the specific surface area (SSA) of silver powders obtained by chemical and electrochemical processes of synthesis have been analyzed . Silver particles produced by a chemical reaction with hydrazine as the reducing agent consisted of agglomerates of approximately spherical grains. The pine-like dendrites were formed by the potentiostatic electrolysis from the ammonium electrolyte at overpotentials inside and outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density. The values of average grain size and SSA for the chemically synthesized powder were between those obtained for the powders produced by electrolysis, that is detailed explained and discussed.

AB - Magnesium underpotential deposition on gold electrodes from magnesium nitrate-ammonium nitrate melts has been investigated. Linear sweep voltammetry and potential step were used as electrochemical techniques. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for characterization of obtained electrode surfaces. It was observed that reduction processes of nitrate, nitrite and traces of water (when present), in the Mg underpotential range studied, proceeded simultaneously with magnesium underpotential deposition. There was no clear evidence of Mg/Au alloy formation induced by Mg UPD from the melt made from eutectic mixture [Mg(NO3)(2).6H(2)O + NH4NO3.XH2O]. However, EDS and XRD analysis showed magnesium present in the gold substrate and four different Mg/Au alloys being formed as a result of magnesium underpotential deposition and interdiffusion between Mg deposit and Au substrate from the melt made of a nonaqueous [Mg(NO3)(2) + NH4NO3] eutectic mixture at 460 K.
