AB - The objectives and effects of refractory materials recycling, as well as the potential
industries from which waste refractories suitable for recycling can be collected, will be
discussed in this paper. After the end of its service life, the refractory material is usually
disposed of at industrial landfills or recycled. The main motive for the reuse of refractories is the
sustainable conservation of natural resources and environmental protection by reducing
CO2 emissions and industrial landfills, reducing landfill costs and users’ costs. The effects
achieved by refractory materials recycling are the cost savings of raw materials and disposal,
the improvement of the environment, the product line expansion, and consequently the
opportunities for products' placement in hitherto unknown and inaccessible markets, as well
as closer cooperation between users and suppliers. Respecting recycling policies brings us
closer to the concept of zero waste.

AB - Self-compacting concrete (SCC) contains fine mineral fillers such as limestone powder. The idea of this study was to partially replace limestone with waste sulfur since it is hydrophobic, insoluble in water and therefore chemically inert and to compare the properties of produced concrete samples. Fresh concrete properties included: slump-flow, t500, V-funnel time, L-box ratio, segregation ratio, density, and entrained air content. Hardened concrete was tested for compressive, flexural and bond strengths, ultrasonic velocity, dynamic elasticity modulus, dynamic Poisson’s ratio, and microstructure. Flowability and segregation increased, while bulk density, compressive and flexural strength, dynamic elasticity modulus and ultrasonic velocity slight declined. Times t500 and V-funnel time, L-box ratio and entrained air changed insignificantly. Considering that all properties should remain or improve in case of waste valorization and the criteria should set to satisfy requirements for SCC, this study proved that all mixtures can be used for structural applications.

AB - The cold spray technique was employed in this study to produce pure nickel (Ni) and nickel-Inconel 718 powder deposits on duplex stainless steel substrates. High quality coatings were manufactured using nitrogen as the propellant gas. The coatings exhibited satisfactory Inconel 718 (In718) retention within the Ni matrix due to the highly ductile binder phase necessary for fabrication. The characterization of the coating microstructures was implemented by means of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and microhardness testing. In addition, the erosion resistance of both coatings was evaluated by performing cavitation erosion tests, with the analysis of the eroded surfaces revealing different erosion mechanisms for each coating. The results demonstrated the efficiency of the cold spray technique for use in the production of metal-metal matrix composite coatings and the potential of In718 use in applications which demand enhanced cavitation erosion resistance.

AB - Establishing a wind park presents a complex enterprise, which involves numerous activities, often impossible to synchronize and drive into the appropriate time-frame. Therefore, in some cases, based on reasonable suspicion, a concern rises regarding the quality of already built components of structures. In such cases, the launch of suitable assessment procedures is required. Stand-ards then define proper methods of in-situ assessment of concrete quality. Statistical methods are implemented in the analysis of the concrete components following the strict rules which, if executed correctly by the well-trained personnel of accredited institutions, provide exact and valid insight in the situation. This paper aspires to describe such procedure on the basis of thorough in-situ investigation and subsequent analysis. In this study, a large number of 255 core samples were taken from 17 wind tower concrete structure elements – foundations (out of 57 wind towers in total), and the compressive strength of already placed concrete was evaluated based on this set of results. The compressive strength is proved to be a good parameter for evaluating other aspects of concrete quality, mechanical properties, and durability.

AB - In this research, two non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, thermal vision analysis and image analysis, were implemented for monitoring the surface changes- erosion of mullite-based ceramic samples in conditions of cavitation exposure. Thermal imaging analysis was focused on determining the temperature line profile at the end of the cavitation experiment. Image analysis is a powerful tool for the quantification of degradation level caused by different impacts and conditions. Based on the results of the image analysis, the degradation level during the testing was determined, as well as number of formed pits with their characteristics (average diameter and area). The results performed by both methods were discussed in order to obtain the optimal procedure that should be followed for estimating degradation caused by cavitation erosion.

AB - The object of this study was to investigate the possibility of copper and zinc leaching from polymetallic sulphide ore from the Bobija deposit (Western Serbia) by Acidithiobacillus sp.B2. Iron-oxidizing Acidithiobacillus sp. B2 was isolated from copper sulphide mine wastewater (Lake Robule) in Bor, Serbia. The bacterium was identified by 16SrDNA oligonuckotide sequence. Leaching experiment by the shake flask testing technique was performed during a period of four weeks ata temperature of 28 °C. The percentage of Cu and Zn leached at the end of this experiment was 65% and 67% respectively. This study shows that iron-oxidizing Acidithiobacillus sp. B2 can have a very important role in the extraction of copper and zinc, from polymetallic sulphide ore from the Bobija deposit.

AB - Refractory castables, like all ceramic materials, contain numerous structural defects in the form of flaws, pores, microcracks, and impurities. These materials are often used in conditions of exposure to sudden and cyclical temperature changes, that is, to thermal shock. Such conditions can cause the creation of cracks in the material structure. Namely, the formation of new microcracks and the growth of those that already existed take place as a consequence of thermal shock. The decrease of mechanical strength as well as a general weakening and degradation of the material are also happening. This research evaluates the effects of thermal shock on high alumina low cement castable. The synthesized samples of one castable composition, based on alumina as an aggregate and calcium-aluminate cement, with the same cure conditions, were sintered at three different temperatures (1100°C, 1300°C, and 1600°C) with a dwell time of 3 hours. A water quench test was applied as an experimental method for thermal shock resistance testing. Morphological analysis of the samples before and during the testing was done. The changes in the material during thermal shock testing were monitored by destructive and non-destructive methods. Image analysis of the photographs of the samples' surfaces and SEM microphotographs of the sample cross-sections were applied to monitor degradation at the surface and inside the bulk. Ultrasonic measurements were used for monitoring internal degradation and elastic properties. Both non-destructive methods also served for homogeneity analysis. Overall material degradation was determined by measuring the mechanical strength of the samples using a classic method according to the standardized procedure. According to the results of performed experiments and analyses, it is evident that during the thermal shock, the surface and interior of the samples sintered at 1600°C behave differently compared with those sintered at 1100°C and 1300°C. The investigations have revealed that all three series of the obtained alumina-based refractory castables displayed high resistance to thermal shock since they withstood more than 40 thermal shock cycles without cracking and with a level of degradation below 50%, even under 25%. The samples sintered at 1300°C exhibited the best thermal shock resistance with more than 110 cycles without cracking. This behavior recommends that all three series of high alumina low cement castables can be effectively used in conditions that require good thermal stability.

AB - The increasing levels of industrial wastewater that are released to the environment present a serious threat to human health, living resources, and ecological systems. Zeolites tested for removal of Cu+2 from contaminated water in two different systems, batch and fixed-bed. Experiments were performed for wide range of initial concentrations of Cu 50-300 mg dm-3. Under applied experimental conditions, both systems manifest satisfying removal efficiency. Obtained adsorption capacities for the copper removal from the solution with the initial Cu concentration of 300 mg dm-3 were 7.52 and 12.19 mg mg-1 for batched and fixed-bed system, respectively.

AB - Mainly due to the strict global environmental regulations regarding the oil and gas
refining processes, which limit the maximum quantity of sulfur in combustibles, the
availability of waste sulfur has been considerably growing during the last decades and it is
evident that there will be a continuous abundant supply of waste sulfur in the future. Finding
new ways for waste sulfur consumption thus becomes very important. In this research,
possibility of using waste sulfur as a binding agent in concrete was analyzed and the
properties of the obtained sulfur polymer concrete in aggressive environments were examined
using destructive and non-destructive testing methods. Compressive strength changes were
insignificant. Ultrasonic measurements indicated significant homogeneity changes and slight
internal degradation. Based on the obtained results, the material with satisfying quality for
possible application in corrosive environment was produced.

AB - Self-compacting concrete (SCC) typically contains a certain content of very fine mineral fillers such as limestone powder. The idea of this study was to partially replace limestone with elemental waste sulfur since it is hydrophobic, insoluble in water and therefore chemically inert in concrete mixtures. Properties of conventional SCC with limestone and several compositions with different sulfur content were compared. Hardened concrete was tested for compressive, flexural, and adhesion strengths, dynamic elasticity modulus, specific electrical resistance, density, microstructure, and infra-red thermography. Results showed a slight decline in compressive, flexural, and adhesion strengths as well as in dynamic elasticity modulus. Specific electrical resistance and density were higher for samples with sulfur. SEM analysis indicated a slight porosity increase for the sample with sulfur. Infrared thermography was applied as a fast method for detecting internal deformations. Having in mind that all properties should remain or improve in case of waste valorization and the criteria should be set to satisfy requirements for SCC, this study proved that all mixtures can be used for certain structural applications.

AB - Pulse-reverse power modes are used in galvanotechniques in order to obtain coatings with better characteristics in terms of gloss, adhesion, tracking sharp edges and uniform distribution of deposits on complex shape objects, compared with the coatings produced by constant current modes. Pulse-reverse modes also allow the use of a higher current density, and thus the production speed of electroplating cells increases. Systems for standard electroplating of copper, silver and gold are optimised by the suitable choice of duration and intensity of the pulses. It is shown that coatings with satisfactory quality can be deposited using higher current density, different modes of pulsed current in a very short period of time, without expensive and often dangerous additives in the electrolyte. Parameters of the model for certain electrochemical systems were determined by modelling and computer simulation, so the system behaviour under different circumstances becomes predictive.

AB - In this study the resistance of cordierite and zircon to the cavitation erosion was investigated with the aim of possible spreading their application. Cavitation erosion test was applied using standard ultrasonic vibratory set up with stationary sample. Weight loss and image analysis measurements including morphological analysis of the formed pits were used for monitoring degradation during the cavitation erosion testing. The obtained results were discussed in order to compare and analyze degradation mechanism and the resistance of the investigated materials to cavitation erosion. Cordierite sample underwent less serious degradation, characterized by continual forming of new pits, while zircon degradation progressed by growth and merging of already formed pits.

AB - This study is occupied by using fly ash for copper removal from the acid mine wastewater and a synthetic solution of similar composition. Chemical analysis of mine wastewater proved that the values of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn exceed the maximum accepted concentration in a large extent. Serbian fly ash from the “Nikola Tesla” power plant was used as a low-cost sorbent for the removal of copper ions (Cu2+) from aqueous solutions. Fly ash was subjected to elementary and XRD analysis. As a method, a batch sorption procedure was applied. Sorption efficiency was studied as a function of the contact time, and amount of the sorbent. Equilibrium was determined after 90 min for all investigated sorbent dosages.

AB - Systematic modification of three structurally different minerals (zeolite, mica, and vermiculite) was carried out with the aim of determining the modification mechanism and exposing the hydrophobic surface that can be used as a sorbent for many organic compounds. Mechanism of modification with cationic surfactant depends strongly on the mineral type. In order to identify the influence of aluminosilicates structural differences on the modification process, adsorption experiments with organic matter and water vapor, supplemented with the DTA/TG analysis, were performed. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) value was 1454>560>28meqkg(-1) for zeolite (clinoptilolite), vermiculite, and mica (muscovite), respectively. Despite its CEC value, vermiculite adsorbed three times the amount of organic matter than did clinoptilolite due to the porous structure of zeolite, which acted to limit the adsorption only on the external exchangeable cations. If the loading amount is equal to the CEC or the external cation exchange capacity for clinoptilolite (ECEC approximate to 10% CEC), the monolayer will form while mineral surface will have hydrophobic character. Only one active center exists at the surface of the clinoptilolite that was identified by DTA curves with a sharp and defined peak around 300 degrees C and by the mass loss at the TG diagrams. Two significant and equal active centers were observed in vermiculite, one for the exchange of the surface cations and the other for the interlayer cations and H2O molecules. Muscovite CEC is negligible, and due to the absence of any other functional groups, the modification of this mineral was impossible.

abstract = "Systematic modification of three structurally different minerals (zeolite, mica, and vermiculite) was carried out with the aim of determining the modification mechanism and exposing the hydrophobic surface that can be used as a sorbent for many organic compounds. AB - This study is focused on monitoring the degradation level of zircon based ceramic materials during exposure to cavitation. In addition to conventional degradation monitoring methods, weight loss measuring, the emphasis is on monitoring the changes occurring at the surface of the sample by taking the photos and analyzing of these images. In this paper, several parameters are monitored by image analysis: the level of surface degradation, the number of pits, and the average area of the pits. This method proved to be very fast and useful for a quantification of damage which could improve the prediction of the material lifetime.

AB - Mechanical shock of zircon based ceramic induced by cavitation erosion testing was investigated in this study. Several parameters were followed in order to determine level of material degradation during the cavitation erosion testing. Mass loss was taken as a conventional criterion for material degradation, while the level of surface degradation was evaluated by image and thermal imaging analyses. Results show high cavitation resistance of zircon ceramics and their suitability when vigorous cavitation erosion environment is expected.

AB - The possibility of applying fly ash from power plants as a binder in supercapacitor electrodes based on activated carbon was investigated in this research. Based on the mechanical and electrical properties of the electrodes, the optimal ratio between fly ash and AC was determined. Supercapacitor electrodes were prepared in two ways: by pressing and by laser solidification. The preparation method significantly affected physical properties of the electrodes as well as the electrochemical behavior in supercapacitor setup. The electrodes were electrochemically tested by galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods and cyclic voltammetry. In order to improve the estimation of supercapacitor parameters, mathematical model that perfectly describes the behavior of investigated electrodes in aqueous solution of sodium nitrate was developed. The best results were obtained with laser-solidified electrode in 1M aqueous solution of NaNO3. Specific capacitance of 105 F/g, serial resistance of 0.57 Omega and self-discharge resistance of 95 Omega were achieved. Stability at high number of cycles proved to be very good. After 2000 cycles of CV at scan rate of 100 mV/s, specific capacitance fell by only 4.6 %.

AB - In this paper the ability of three natural zeolites from different localities (Vranjska banja-VB, Igroš-I and Baia Mare-BM deposits) to remove copper has been investigated. These three zeolites were subjected to the elementary analysis as well as XRDP and DTA/TG analysis due to complete characterization. Cation exchange capacity of VB, I and BM zeolites were 150.1, 169.2, and 176.5 meq/100g. The maximum adsorption capacity for the copper adsorption on VB, I and BM-zeolites were 7.75, 8.51, and 11.18 mg/g. Based on the obtained results the mathematical expression that describes correlation between the CEC and copper adsorption capacity has been developed. This linear dependance has been tested with the vast variety of experimental results. According to this expression it is possible to predict the copper adsorption capacity for different zeolites based only on their CEC value.
Kapaciteti katjonske izmene (CEC) ispitivanih zeolita VB, I i BM iznose 150,1, 169,2 i 176,5 meq/100g. .

AB - The paper presents the results of testing the mullite ceramics in terms of cavitation erosion. Mullite samples were sintered at 1200 °C. To determine the cavitation resistance the ultrasonic vibration method with stationary specimen was used. Mass loss and level of degradation of surface samples were monitored using the image analysis. Test results showed a high cavitation resistance of mullite ceramics and its possible application to various areas-metallurgy, mining, construction, chemical industry, where it is expected the presence of cavitation erosion.

Mass loss and level of degradation of surface samples were monitored using the image analysis. Test results showed a high cavitation resistance of mullite ceramics and its possible application to various areas-metallurgy, mining, construction, chemical industry, where it is expected the presence of cavitation erosion.",
