AB - A number of experiments with "specific"ground water from the Pannonian Plains (the Republic of Serbia) were conducted in order to define a technological process for drinking water treatment. The "specificity"of this raw water is reflected in increased pH value and increased concentrations of natural organic matter, ammonia, hydrogen-sulphide and some toxic metals. Removal of natural organic matter by the basic macroporous resins in acid medium (pH 6.6-7.2) ranged up to 92% of the input concentration, and of hydrogen-sulphide up to 60%. The remaining hydrogen-sulphide, that was not eliminated on the macroporous resin, was completely removed by adsorption on the Filtersorb FMH. The correlation between the concentration of natural organic matter and the UV extinction in raw and processed water, both in the acid and in the alkaline media, was established. The adsorption of natural organic matter on macroporous resins is more efficient in the alkaline medium than in the acid one.

AB - A large number of macrophytes, often in dense populations, have developed on the Grlište Reservoir, Serbia over a period of 15 years. Fast development of vegetation is a consequence of anthropogenic impact in lake management. The methodology used in this research covered 100% of the water body, including all areas with or without aquatic plants. The results indicate that plant communities are still in the early phase of development. This leaves space for future development of competitor macrophyte species (Najas marina, Eleocharis palustris, Typha latifolia, Typha angustifolia, Phragmites australis, etc.) capable of endangering stability of the lake, which will tend toward eutrophication.

AB - A large part of Central Serbia experiences continual shortage of sufficient ground water resources. For that reason, more than 20 reservoirs serve as drinking water suppliers. Significant and persistent cyanobacterial "blooms" have been recognized in nine of them. Samples for cyanotoxin analyses were taken during and after "blooms" in Celije Reservoir and from Krusevac town-supplied tap water from that reservoir two days later. Concentration of microcystin-LR was 650 μgL-1 in the reservoir, while the tap water contained 2.5 μgL-1. In the two investigated periods, the high primary liver cancer (PLC) mortality of 11.6 from 1980-1990 and extremely high PLC incidence of 34.7 from 2000-2002 were observed in the regions affected by heavy cyanobacterial "blooms." In contrast, PLC mortality and incidence rates were substantially lower in the regions not affected by cyanobacterial blooms: in 1980-1990 the rate of PLC mortality amounted to 2.7 in Kosovo, 7.6 in Vojvodina, and 8.3 in the non-affected regions of Central Serbia; while in 2000-2002 PLC incidence amounted to 4.1 in Kosovo, 5.2 in Vojvodina, and 13.6 in the non- or less-affected regions of Central Serbia. Keeping in mind that the most affected PLC regions in Central Serbia (Toplicki, Niski, and Sumadijski regions) have the water supply systems based on six reservoirs found regularly in bloom during summer months and that some of the regions are also connected with two boundary "blooming" reservoirs, representing a total of eight of nine blooming reservoirs, it is easy to presume that the PLC incidence could be related to drinking water quality. The uneven geographic distribution of liver cancer in Serbia is conspicuous and hot spots could be related to drinking water supply. It is very clear that the high-risk regions for PLC occurrence correspond with drinking water reservoirs continually found with cyanobacterial blooms, and the low risk regions correspond with water supplies not affected by cyanobacteria. AB - Vojvodina, as a part of Pannonian plain, is supplied with underground waters from well which are located 150 to 200 m under the surface. The quality of these waters is questionable and specific due to to the presence of higher concentrations of arsenic, iron, ammonium and, frequently enough, humic acid and sulphide. The price of drinking water in this area is affected by the presence and the complicated interaction of the above mentioned polluting materials in the underground waters. In this region the concentration of arsenic in the water varies from 2-250 μg/l, whereas the concentration of humic acid is often higher than 20 mg/l. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the researches conducted on one of the pilot plant in Vojvodina where Iron Oxide Hybrid System was used for treating arsenic in combination with applying other technologies for eliminatinating other pollutants from raw water. The adsorption technique was chosen on the basis of the previously conducted analyses and on the available reference data about the effects and efficiency of other technologies.

abstract = "Vojvodina, as a part of Pannonian plain, is supplied with underground waters from well which are located 150 to 200 m under the surface. The adsorption technique was chosen on the basis of the previously conducted analyses and on the available reference data about the effects and efficiency of other technologies., Vojvodina, deo Panonske nizije, snabdeva se podzemnom vodom iz izdani koje zaležu na dubinama 150 – 250 m. AB - The population and the industry in the region of West Backa are supplied with underground water which is specific in its quality due to higher content of organic substance, higher pH values, the presence of hydrogen-sulphide and higher concentration of arsenic, which all result from the geological structure of the soil in that area. The concentration of arsenic found in the drinking water in some populated areas of the region exceeds ten times the highest allowed concentrations of 10 micro g/l. The concentrations of arsenic were measured in the samples of water taken from the wells which are used by residents of these areas. The provided data were statistically processed and presented in this paper.

AB - The adsorption process are more and more frequently applied in water treatments. The choice of the adsorption medium depends on the adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity in statical conditions should always preceeds the determination of the adsorption capacity in dynamic conditions, because it represents one of the main indicators of the proper determination of technological parameters in the process of water purification. The aim of this paper is to present a method for determination of specific adsorption capacity according to linear form of Freundlich`s equation and adsorption capacity in accordance with Lengmuir`s equation and its linear form.

AB - This work presents analytical data for copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) of the Grlište storage reservoir that was built for water supply to Zaječar and the nearby communities. Because there was not any industry of military work that could be a source of heavy metals, the research focused on the geology of the area drained to the impounded lake. Occurrences and deposits of minerals in the area were registered and concentrations of copper, zinc and manganese in the lake analyzed and graphically represented. Water samples the analyses were taken at the upstream and downstream ends and the middle of the lake, each from three depths: lake surface, mid-depth and near the floor. Measurements spanned the period from 1991 to 2004. The copper and zinc concentrations had a gently rising trend in all sections, and manganese only in the upstream end of the lake.

AB - Since 1980 cyanobacterial blooms occurred in a large number of reservoirs lakes and water flows (rivers and channels) in Serbia. Among 83 water ecosystems examined, 58 were found in blooming condition almost every year during last 2 decades. All natural lakes, accumulations, rivers and canals in Vojvodina province (agricultural part) proved to be sites with frequent cyanobacterial proliferation. During the summer 2005-spring 2006 microcystin-LR survey in Vojvodina, the toxin was permanently present in all examined ecosystems and the highest value of 362.68 μgL-1 was detected in Ludoš Lake. The part of Central Serbia is very problematic for ground water supply. For that reason more than 20 reservoirs serve as drinking water suppliers. Significant and persistent cyanobacterial blooms have been recognized in 9 of them. Samples for cyanotoxin analyses were taken during and after blooms in Ćelije Reservoir and in drinking water in Kruševac town 2 days later. Concentration of microcystin-LR was 650 μgL-1 in the reservoir while the tap water contained 2.5μgL-1.

AB - North Banat, an area of about 2329 km2 administered by six municipalities, is the extreme northeastern part of the Republic of Serbia and located in the southeastern margin of Pannonian depression. Drinking water is supplied under artesian or sub artesian pressure of Lower Pleistocene (Q1) or Upper Pliocene (Pl3) from confined aquifers. Tapped water-bearing beds in Banat dip from northeast to the south, reaching a depth of some 300 m at surrounding of Kikinda. Chemically, these 'uncommon' waters are a natural rarity controlled by geological and hydro geological characters of the water-bearing strata. The quality of water, periodically tested and examined, is discussed in this paper and its chemical composition is interpreted in terms of the regional geology.
