AB - The primary objectives of this study is mineralogical characterization of two sludge samples with different initial content of iron derived by hydro-cyclone overflow generated during the processing of iron ore in the Omarska mine. Also, a comparative study of the mineral composition and its connection with some properties important for the sludge flocculation process was done. Studied sludge samples are composed of major goethite and quartz; less clay minerals; and minor magnetite, hematite, clinochlore and todorokite. They have quite similar qualitative, but different semi-quantitative compositions. There are similar particle size distributions between the samples, and highest contents of about 50% belongs to the finest classes of <6 m. Among size classes within the samples, almost identical iron contents are present; indicating to their similar mineral compositions, which make this system very complex for further separation processes. Sludge II has higher natural settling rate, due to its higher density and mineral composition. With addition of the flocculant, settling rates increases significantly with the increase of the liquid component in both of the samples. The effect of flocculant on the settling rate is different between samples, and depends on their mineral composition. The time of settling does not play a role in selectivity, to the ratio of the mass of floating and sinking parts, and iron content does not change with time. The content of iron partially increases by flocculation; therefore, this method should be considered as an appropriate one. Zeta potential values for sludge are mostly between those for goethite and quartz, indicating their particle mixture and intricately association.

AB - The waste sludge generated during processing of iron ore in the Omarska mine (The Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina) is fine-grained (<15μm), containing relatively high concentrations of iron, and quartz as its major impurity. The flocculation behaviour of the primary natural raw “quartz” sample from Omarska mine was studied in the present paper. This sample is composed of major quartz which dominates over minor contents of clay minerals and feldspars, and contain 92.9% of SiO2. Particle size distribution analysis confirm that it is present as fine and ultra-fine particles. The zeta potential of quartz depends on pH value. Settling experiments were performed by using three different dispersants (Na-hexamethaphosphate, Na-pyrophosphate and Na-silicate), and anionic polyacrylamide as flocculants. The best results were achieved with Na-hexametaphosphate (1000 g/t) and anionic polyacrylamide A 100. The effect of a flocculant on the settling rate depends on solid concentration. Settling rates increase significantly with the increase of the liquid component in both cases (natural settling and hindered settling by addition of a flocculant).

AB - In present paper, studied were the dispersion-flocculation behaviour of the primary natural raw „clay samples” from Omarska mine (Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina). Namely, our previous results showed that during the processing of iron ore in the Omarska mine, large quantities of fine sized (<15μm) waste sludge, with relatively high Fe concentrations, were generated. Sludge samples are composed of major goethite and quartz, less clay minerals, and minor magnetite and todorokite. Selective flocculation is one of the methods that can be applied for the separation of fine class iron minerals from impurities and depends on the individual components of the sludge and their behaviour. This paper presents part of the research of the individual components of the sludge. The „clay samples” are composed of major quartz and clay minerals, which dominate over minor contents of feldspars, amphiboles, goethite and hematite. The clay minerals were identified as mostly illite-sericite which prevails over kaolinite, and with chlorites which appears only sporadically. The dispersion-flocculation behaviour was studied by settling and flocculation experiments and Zeta potential measurements. A three different dispersants (sodium-hexametaphosphate, sodium-pyrophosphate and sodium-silicate), and anionic and non-ionic polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculants were used. It was established that the best results were achieved with sodium-hexametaphosphate (1000 g/t) and anionic A100 PAM.

AB - In present paper there were studied the dispersion-flocculation behaviour of the primary natural raw clay samples from Omarska mine (Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina). During the processing of iron ore in the Omarska mine, large quantities of fine sized (<15µm) waste sludge, with relatively high Fe concentrations, were generated. Our previous results showed that sludge samples are composed of major goethite and quartz, less clay minerals, and minor magnetite and todorokite. Selective flocculation is one of the methods that can be applied for the separation of fine class iron minerals from impurities, and depends on the individual components of the sludge and their behaviour. In order to precisely determine the present mineral phases and their chemical compositions, it was performed XRPD, FTIR and SEM-EDS analysis. The “clay samples” are composed of major quartz and clay minerals which dominate over minor contents of feldspars, amphiboles, goethite and hematite. The clay minerals were identified as mostly illite-sericite which prevails over kaolinite, and with chlorites which appears only sporadically. The dispersion-flocculation behaviour was investigated by settling and flocculation experiments and Zeta potential measurements. A three different dispersants (sodium-hexametaphosphate, sodium-pyrophosphate and sodium-silicate), and anionic and non-ionic polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculants were used. The best results were achieved with sodium-hexametaphosphate (1000g/t) and anionic PAM.

AB  - Studied sludge samples are composed of major goethite and quartz; less clay minerals;
and minor magnetite, hematite, clinochlore and todorokite. They have quite similar qualitative,
but different semi-quantitative compositions. There are similar particle size distributions between
the samples, and the highest contents of ~50% belongs to the finest classes of <6 m. Among size classes within the samples, almost identical iron contents are present; indicating their similar mineral compositions, which make these systems very complex for further separation processes. Sludge II has a higher natural settling rate, due to its higher density and mineral composition. With addition of the flocculant, settling rates increase significantly with the increase of the liquid component in both of the samples.

AB - This paper presents the results of the study of the particle size distribution of the limonite sludge that occurs as a hydro-cyclone overflow in the Omarska iron mine. The primary role of the precise
characterization of grains of mineral raw material is in obtaining quantitative data about their particle size and analysis of the distribution of mineral grains by volume, which is a necessary step in controlling the processes of the iron ore beneficiation. Since the overflow of the hydro-cyclone size class is -25 μm, in this paper the following methods of sub-sieve analysis are used: sedimentation method-Beaker decantation; pipetting method by Andreasen-Borner; and Warman cyclosizer. Different methods were used in order to analyze the compliance of the results, as well as comparison of them, because expensive and rapid instrumental methods are often unavailable in practice. Also, the content of iron in the sludge varies, so the correlation of iron content with granulometric particle distribution was analyzed. These analyzes were carried out on two samples of sludge with different average iron content (29.43% and 41.19%). On both samples the iron content was determined per size class. The results showed a largest iron content in the smallest classes (-9+6 microns). These results indicate the necessity of applying some of the methods for selectively separating fine particles (such as selective flocculation, for example) in a further process of preparation.
