AB - To investigate the magnetic behavior of starch-coated cobalt ferrites, well-established synthetic methods, i.e., coprecipitation, mechanochemical, ultrasonically assisted coprecipitation, microemulsion, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal syntheses were chosen for their preparation. The obtained materials had pure single-phase spinel structures. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed that the morphology of the samples is not uniform, and particle aggregation is a dominant process. Fourier transform infrared spectra and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the presence of starch in all–coated samples. The unusually higher saturation magnetization of starch-coated samples than their as-prepared analogs, obtained by coprecipitation, ultrasonically assisted coprecipitation, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal methods, might be explained by the Ostwald ripening mechanism induced by the coating process. A decrease in magnetization was noticed for the starch-functionalized nanomaterials synthesized by mechanochemical and microemulsion methods, in comparison to their as-prepared analogs, i.e., the size distribution of such nanoparticles is narrow, and the average diameter of the grains is near critical for the Ostwald ripening process.

AB - In this paper, grandite core with Grs64±1Adr36±1Sps2 composition was crystallographically studied. This core represents zone A of the macroscopically visible five A–E zones of the optically anisotropic Grs58–64Adr36–42Sps2 grandite. The applied procedure includes the detailed analysis of the powder diffraction patterns, and the Rietveld refinements of the crystal structures in a series of 18 space groups and two mixtures, which were followed by the comparative analysis of the R-values, site occupancy factors, and the bond lengths and angles. Synthesis of all of the presented results allows us to undoubtedly conclude that studied grandite is not cubic, neither as monophase nor as multiple phases in a mixture. Namely, it was established that structural dissymmetrization occurred and that it crystallized in the disordered rhombohedral R-3c or orthorhombic Fddd space groups, whereby the first one is more probable. Beside the established lower symmetry of the studied grandite, which could be treated as the primary cause, the residual strain is also not excluded as the second possible cause for its slight optical anisotropy.

AB - A simple organic-phase synthesis process was used to produce bare NiFe2O4 and ZnFe2O4 and core-shell ZnFe2O4@NiFe2O4 ferrite nanoparticles. X-ray powder diffractograms for all investigated powders show characteristic peaks of a spinel cubic structure without a secondary phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated the presence of nanoparticles that are smaller than 20 nm. The release of divalent ions (Ni2+ and Zn2+) from synthesized nanoparticles that were dispersed in saline solution, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and human serum, as determined by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method, was lower than 2 wt %. These results demonstrate the stability of the investigated nanoparticles in biologically relevant media and exclude the toxicity of Ni2+ and Zn2+ due to metal ion release, thereby opening a broad range of (bio)medical applications.

AB - Barium titanate (BaTiO3) attracts high scientific and technological attention due to good dielectric and electromechanical properties. Although BaTiO3 is one of the most frequently investigated ferroelectric materials, the need for finding new and/or improved synthesis methods of this material still exists. In this paper, a novel, mild synthesis route for producing tetragonal BaTiO3 from barium nitrate and Ti-oxalate precursor is presented. Morphology of the prepared and subsequently sintered BaTiO3 was determined by SEM. Particle size distribution of the as prepared powder was monitored by the laser diffraction. The phase composition, structure and lattice dynamics were investigated by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Finally, dielectric parameters were determined in the temperature range from 30 to 180 degrees C, and within a variety of frequencies. Curie temperature was detected at 130 degrees C.

AB - This work is the first report of a very simple and fast one-pot synthesis of nickel oxide (NiO) and hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles by thermal decomposition of transition metal aqua complexes with camphor sulfonate anions. Obtained nanopowders were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform IR analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. X-ray powder diffraction confirmed the formation of high purity NiO and α-Fe2O3 crystal phases. In the case of α-Fe2O3, about five times larger average crystallite size was obtained. Fourier transform IR spectra of synthesized materials showed characteristic peaks for NiO and α-Fe2O3 nanostructures. To visualize the morphology and the chemical composition of the final products Scanning electron microscopy and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were performed. The thermogravimetric analysis was done for a better understanding of the general thermal behavior of precursor compounds. This easy-to-perform and fast preparation method opens a broad range of obtained materials’ usage, particularly due to its economic viability.

AB - Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes (1 and 2, respectively) with thiomorpholine-4-carbonitrile (TM-CN), an N-substituted thiomorpholine derivative, were synthesized from tetrachlorido precursors in water. Structural analysis has shown that 1 represents the first monomeric metal complex with this ligand type with an axial M–S bond with respect to the TM-CN ring chair conformation, while in 2 a typical equatorial M–S bond position with respect to the ring chair conformation was observed. A detailed DFT investigation revealed that axial conformers are more stable for molecular forms of both metals, while intermolecular interactions in the crystals stabilize the axial conformer for Pt(II) and the equatorial conformer for Pd(II). The magnitude of this stabilization in the case of 2 is large enough to change the most stable axial conformer in the molecular form to the equatorial conformer in the crystal. Further investigation of the strength of individual intermolecular interactions revealed significant differences of some interactions between the two structures. The likely cause of the difference in the crystal structures of experimentally obtained complexes is the fact that 1 and 2 exhibit different dominant interactions: C–H/M and C–H/S are more dominant in 1 and C–H/Cl interactions are more dominant in 2. In addition, DFT calculations have shown that while the axial position of the Pt–S bond with respect to the ring chair conformation results in a significantly shorter C–H/Pt interaction distance than that in the hypothetical equatorial conformer, there is very little difference in C–H/Pd interaction distances in conformers with axial and equatorial positions of Pd–S bond with respect to the ring chair conformation.

AB - The goal of this work was the synthesis of a montmorillonite based catalyst for advanced oxidative degradation of organic water pollutants. Montmorillonite (Mt) –rich bentonite was acid-activated (MtA), and impregnated with cobalt (II) solution using the incipient wetness impregnation method. The impregnation was followed by heat treatment. Cobalt(II) ions were added in the quantities corresponding to 0.5 and 1.0 of the cation exchange capacity value. All samples were characterized by using chemical analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and
low temperature N2 physisorption. The incorporation of the cobalt in the impregnated samples and the development of porous structure in the acid-activated ones were confirmed. The montmorillonite (Mt) was used as a catalyst support, while the cobalt in its oxide form was responsible for the generation of sulfo-radicals from Oxone®. Two aromatic N-compounds were tested as model pollutants: diazo dye - Acid Orange 10 (AO10) and nicotine. It was found that the synthesized catalysts could be used for the degradation of both pollutants, although more efficiently in AO10 degradation. The acid activation, higher cobalt loading, and temperature were found to be beneficial for the degradation of AO10.

During preclinical investigation of poorly water-soluble compounds such as DK-I-56–1, the application of nanotechnology could be advantageous due to improved safety and possibly increased bioavailability of nanosized formulation. DK-I-56–1 nanosuspensions stabilized by polysorbate 80, alone or in combination with poloxamers 188 i.e. 407 or D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate, were prepared using a small-scale media milling device. With particle size 208.7–250.6 nm and polydispersity index <0.250, selected nanodiseprsions were stable for three weeks. Pharmacokinetic and biodistribution studies following intraperitoneal administration of three types of formulation in mice indicated high plasma DK-I-56–1 levels after solution (10,228.6 ± 1037.2 ngh/ml) and nanosuspension (6770.4 ± 770.7 ngh/ml) but not suspension administration (966.0 ± 58.1 ngh/ml). However, distribution of DK-I-56–1 after solution was heavily influenced by its composition, and brain availability of nanosuspension was superior to that of solution formulation. In spontaneous locomotor activity test, the expected hyperlocomotor effect was observed after nanosuspension administration, without compromising impact of the vehicle/excipients used. Therefore, nanonization of drug compound assembled with proper selection of stabilizers may seemingly contribute further thorough testing of DK-I-56–1 preclinical efficacy.

AB - The investigation of the relationship between paleoenvironmental conditions and distribution and relative abundance of specific saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons was the main objective of this study, thus marking the parameters, which were most sensitive to environmental changes. Insights on the type, generative potential, and maturity of organic matter (OM), as well as paleoclimate conditions, along with the reconstruction of depositional settings of the northwest part of the Toplica basin (Serbia), were provided. Organic petrographic, palynofacies, organic geochemical, mineralogical, and XRF analyses were carried out to investigate 40 sediment samples of the Prebreza and Čučale sedimentary units. Investigated samples were deposited in the saline and anoxic environment, under semi-arid to semi-humid/humid climate conditions, along with the constant inflow of volcanoclastic material. The predominance of δ-methyltrimethyltridecil chroman (δ-MTTC) within euxinic portions of the stratified water column was associated with an increase in salinity, which was noticed for sediments of the Prebreza unit. Sediments from this stratigraphic unit showed a higher contribution of algae precursor, whereas sediments of the Čučale unit suggested higher participation of microbiologically reworked OM. Most of the samples contained oil-prone kerogen type II. Maturity of the OM for sediments of the Prebreza unit ranged from immature to early-mature, while for samples of the Čučale unit varied from early-mature to mature stages. Distribution of hopane biomarkers typical for crude oil indicated that depth of 1 km was a boundary for the genesis of thermodynamic, more stable compounds. A significant portion of semifusinite was correlated with the paleofire event, which affected the distribution of n-alkanes. The high production of hydrocarbons was related to volcanic activity. Parameters, which proved to be highly susceptible at the stratigraphic boundary between the Prebreza and Čučale units, were C-value, S/H, α-MTTC, δ-MTTC, β-/γ-MTTC, and (1,3- + 1,6-)/(1,4 + 1,5-DMC), respectively.

AB - Investigations focusing on wellhead encrustations within select zones of emergence of mineral water, in different hydrogeological provinces, were conducted from 2014 to 2017 in Serbia. They included: well BB-1 in Bogatić (Inner Dinaric Alps of western Serbia), wells LB-4 and LB-5 in Lukovska Banja (Šumadija-Kopaonik-Kosovo Province), and wells VG-2 and VG-3 in Vranjska Banja (Serbian Crystalline Core). The studied occurrences belong to the group of hot mineral waters, with temperatures ranging from 62°C to 93.9°C, and total dissolved solids (TDS) from 600 to 1267 mg/L. They are mildly acidic to mildly alkaline (pH 6.6 – 8.0) and their genetic types are HCO3 --Na++K+ (Bogatić and Lukovska Banja) and SO4 2-, HCO3 --Na++K+ (Vranjska Banja). Macroscopic, optical and diffraction assessment revealed that the encrustations comprised calcite and aragonite minerals, along with some local quartz, muscovite, albite and clinochlore. The conclusion was that there was a predominant presence of calcium carbonate in all the occurrences, represented by crystalline calcite grains, characteristically birefractive, and dark, semitranslucent grains in the form of microcrystalline calcite highly stained by iron hydroxides (Bogatić), as well as crystalline calcite with radially developed carbonate - aragonite (Lukovska Banja) and rod-like and filamentous aggregates of aragonite and calcite, highly translucent in places (Vranjska Banja). The texture of the samples exhibits alternating horizontal or wavy carbonate laminae. In Vranjska Banja, they include thin micritic to medium crystalline laminae and laminae composed of aggregates of aragonite needles in the form of bunch. In Bogatić and Lukovska Banja, there are thick micritic and highly porous laminae, 0.025 to 1 mm thick, or interlayers of a coarser crystalline structure. Apart from encrustations, all the occurrences exhibit phototrophic microbial mats, which were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The onset and progress of encrustation are primarily influenced by the physical and chemical composition of the mineral water (T, pH, TDS, HCO3 -, Ca2+, CO2, etc.), as corroborated by hydrogeochemical modeling software PHREEQC 3.4.0. In addition, phototrophic biofilms might be contributing to the creation and accumulation of minerals in the encrustations.

AB - Light-transmitting measurements of white light and a consequentially chosen laser beam of 655 nm propagating
through citrate- and oleate-coated CoFe2O4, FeFe2O4, and MgFe2O4 nanoparticles under the influence of an
external magnetic field were presented. New experimental settings were developed for the optical study of
ferrites’ behavior in ferrofluid with the applied magnetic field strength within the 30–400 mT range. A magnetic
field-induced change of light transmittance occurred and a precipitation of all studied samples was obtained.
Optical investigations of ferrofluid suspensions revealed that, contrary to the linear aggregates of colloidal
CoFe2O4 and FeFe2O4, spheroidal aggregates were formed in the case of MgFe2O4. In all three cases, the surface
modification resulted in decreased dipole–dipole interactions between ferrite cores, and thus, less precipitates
were noticed. All oleate-coated nanoparticles have demonstrated weaker magnetic responses compared to the
citrate-encapsulated samples. The aggregation of nanoparticles potentially increases cytotoxicity. Regarding
non-linear clustering of MgFe2O4 suspensions, it can be concluded that its excretion from the organism may
likely be easier and faster when used in diagnosis and/or therapy. Therefore, more attention should be paid to
the lowly toxic MgFe2O4 regarding its medical application.

AB - Zinc-ferrite, nickel-ferrite and mixed nickel-zinc ferrites were successfully synthesized via the thermal decomposition method from acetylacetonate complexes. To control the particle size and enhance dispersibility in an aqueous medium, starch, a natural and biocompatible compound, was used for the first time for coating such magnetic powders. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) was performed to study the structural properties of all samples. The presence of a single-phase spinel structure as well as the cation distribution in both sites of all investigated magnetic powders was confirmed. The values of unit cell parameters obtained from the results of the Rietveld analysis decreased, while the average crystallite size increased with increasing Ni2+ content. The average microstrain parameters unambiguously showed a change in the spinel structure with cation distribution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses were also utilized to characterize the synthesized materials, corroborating the XRPD data. The obtained results indicated that functionalization by starch was successfully achieved.

AB - Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) particles have been prepared in nanocrystalline form by several techniques (hydrothermal synthesis, ultrasonic assisted synthesis, microemulsion synthesis, mechanochemical synthesis and microwave synthesis). All samples were coated with starch to find biomedical applications in the field of drug delivery, MRI and hyperthermia. Cobalt ferrite is chosen because its high magneto-crystalline anisotropy that originates from the spin-orbit coupling at crystal lattices. The synthesized coated and uncoated nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Light transmitting measurements of laser beam of 655 nm propagating through starch coated CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, under the influence of an external magnetic field, were presented.

AB - Zinc-ferrite, nickel-ferrite and mixed nickel-zinc ferrites were synthesized via the thermal decomposition method from the precursor complexes containing acetylacetonate as ligand. The biomedical application of ferrites requires controllable particle size and enhanced dispersibility in a physiological medium. Surface coating of the samples obtained from acetylacetone complexes was achieved using starch, a natural and biocompatible compound, for the first time. Investigation of their structural and microstructural properties by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) was performed. The XRPD results confirmed the crystalline nature and presence of single phase spinel structure. The unit cell parameter decreased, while the crystallite size increased with decreasing zinc content in the structure. The average microstrain parameters unambiguously showed a change in the spinel structure with cation distribution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses were also performed to characterize the synthesized magnetic powders. The obtained results indicated that functionalization by starch was successfully achieved.

AB - The aim of this work is to assess damage to the City of Belgrade caused by the unfavorable weather condition of hail due to the absence of anti-hail defense of the city, and to argumentatively point out the necessity of introducing new technical-technological systems for preventing the effects of adverse weather conditions. The results are based on the direct correlation-analyses of two real unfavorable weather events and the estimated financial damage caused by these events. The overall calculation also takes into account financial investments (new financial model) necessary to establish two essentially different systems for anti-hail protection. The damage caused by the hail on the territory of the City of Belgrade and the financial investment in anti-hail protection to reduce it are empirically established for the first time. It is shown how the damage could be transformed to profit, as the financial investment in anti-hail protection is lower than the damage that hail can cause.

AB - Fe-doped TiO2 photocatalysts with different contents of Fe (0.5, 1.6, 3.4 and 6.4 %) were synthesized by a microwave-hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, N-2 physisorption at 77 K and UV-Vis spectrometry. The characterization showed that the Fe ions were highly dispersed in the TiO2 lattice. It was found that all the synthesized catalysts had a mesoporous structure and that Fe-doping increased the BET surface area. The UV-Vis study showed that the absorption spectra were shifted to longer wavelengths (red shift) with increasing dopant concentration. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was evaluated by the decolorization of the textile dye Reactive Blue 52 (RB) in aqueous solutions under sun-like radiation in the presence of H2O2 (a heterogeneous photo-Fenton process). The photocatalyst with 3.4 % Fe was found to be the most efficient in the presence of H2O2. The effect of the initial pH of the dye solution was assessed and dissolution of iron ions was studied as a function of pH value. It was concluded that decolorization was more favorable in acidic pH, and that at pH values >4, the release of Fe ions into the solution was negligible. Photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) was investigated under the optimal conditions and it was shown that the catalyst was capable of degrading colorless pollutants.

AB - Elevated concentrations of arsenic in groundwater, which is used as a source for drinking water, is a worldwide problem. Use of TiO2 and iron doped TiO2 synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method for As(III) and As(V) removal were examined. Synthesized sorbents were characterized with XRD and nitrogen physisorption. Synthesized sorbents have predominantly anatase structure, and no peaks for iron could be observed. Doping of iron increases the surface area of synthesized sorbents. Sorption experiments show that increase of iron in sorbents increases the sorption capacity for As(III) and As(V). Increase of pH from 3 to 11 has no influence on As(III) sorption but decreases the sorption of As(V). Batch isotherm studies were performed to determine the binding capacities of As(III) and As(V). As(III) followed the Freundlich isotherm model, while for As(V) a better fit was with the Langmuir isotherm. The results of competition of SO42- and PO43- anions on adsorption of As(III) indicated that both anions reduced substantially the efficiency of adsorption on both adsorbents while for As(V) only the presence of PO43- anion interfered with adsorption. Testing 10Fe/TiO2 sorbent with arsenic contaminated natural water showed that this material could be used for removal of arsenic to the level recommended by WHO without pretreatment.

AB - High energy ball milling was used in order to improve dispersion of metal oxide in Ag-SnO2 electrical contact materials. The processed Ag-SnO2 (92:8) and Ag-SnO2In2O3 (87.8:9.30:2.9) powder mixtures were subsequently consolidated to bulk solid pieces by conventional powder metallurgy method. The characterization of the prepared samples included microstructural analysis by XRD and SEM, as well as measurements of physical properties such as density, hardness and electrical conductivity. The results of X-Ray analysis point to reduction of crystallite size after milling of about ten times. Microstructures of sintered Ag-SnO2 and Ag-SnO2 In2O3 materials display very fine dispersion of the oxide components in silver matrix. Somewhat higher uniformity was obtained for Ag-SnO2 In2O3 material which was illustrated by results of SEM analysis and more consistent microhardness values. The obtained values of studied physical properties were found to be in accordance with observed higher dispersion of metal oxide particles and comparable to properties of commercial electrical contact materials of this type.
