AB - The adhesion and electrochemical properties of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on hot-dip galvanized steel with and without passive films were investigated during exposure to 3% NaCl. The passive films were formed in hot air, in boiling water and by chromating. Adhesion was measured both by a standardized pull-off method and by swelling in N-methyl pyrrolidone. Pretreatment of hot-dip galvanized steel with passive film formed in hot air increases both dry and wet adhesion strength of the epoxy coating compared to pretreatment with passive film formed in boiling water and chromate coating. The overall increase of wet adhesion for this sample was maintained throughout the whole investigated time period. It was shown that the change in adhesion of epoxy coating on a chromate coating is smallest of all investigated samples, although the initial value of adhesion on this surface had the lowest value. The corrosion stability of coated Zn samples pretreated by different methods, was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and in the initial time of exposure to NaCl the highest values of pore resistance were also obtained for the epoxy coating on Zn pretreated in hot air, whereas the epoxy coating on a HDG steel with a chromate coating showed the smallest change in electrochemical properties (pore resistance, coating capacitance, charge-transfer resistance) during prolonged exposure time.

AB - In this paper we present pulse deposition as a new method to favor the self-assembly of nanostructured materials. Nucleation and growth of gold thin layers deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrate have been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy in air. Depositions were performed in a pulsed regime and, for comparison, continuously in time. Much higher cluster density and better arrangement of clusters are obtained for pulse deposition than for gold deposited continuously. The formation of the channel structure of the deposited layer is favored and achieved earlier. The results indicate that the number of surface defect sites increases with subsequent pulses, behavior attributed to the previously formed clusters taking on the role of surface defect sites.

AB - In this paper, we present a study of the nucleation and growth stages of sputter-deposited Cr thin films on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrates using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) in air. Freshly cleaved HOPG surfaces and those modified by Ar+ ion bombardment were used as substrates. For short deposition times, two-dimensional (2D) chromium clusters on the graphite substrate were observed. With an increase in deposition time, the formation of three-dimensional (3D) clusters occurred. The number of surface defect sites influences the number and size of clusters formed on the graphite substrate. The formation and surface diffusion of 2D and 3D clusters play a dominant role in the subsequent stages of the nucleation of chromium thin films. The results of our investigation show clearly that the most important contribution to the elementary mechanism of growth is the phase transition from 2D to 3D clusters and their condensation into larger 3D clusters.

AB - An analogy between the behavior of real gases and the behavior of clusters deposited on a surface has been established. A relation similar to the Van der Waals equation was used, with the variables corresponding to the deposition process. It was found that the critical parameters and the Boyle temperature of the substrate define the conditions of a particular nucleation and of the thin film growth mode and the conditions when one growth mode converts to the other. It has been shown that the introduced analogy is in a good agreement with the recent experiments of nucleation and growth of thin films. The applicability of the proposed analogy to the epitaxial growth and surface sputtering has been discussed.
