AB - This study discusses the possibility of using corona pre-treated polypropylene (PP) non-woven fabric as a support for immobilization of colloidal TiO2 and Ag nanoparticles in order to remove dye C.I. Acid Orange 7 from aqueous solution. Dye removal efficiency by sonocatalysis, photocatalysis and sonophotocatalysis was evaluated on corona pre-treated fabric loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles, corona pre-treated fabric double loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles and corona pre-treated fabrics loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles before and after deposition of Ag nanoparticles. In addition, the stability of PP non-woven fabric during these processes was investigated. The substrates were characterized by SEM, EDX and AAS analyses. The change of the dye concentration was evaluated by UV-VIS spectrophotometry. Unlike sonocatalysis and photocatalysis, complete dye removal from both solution and non-woven fabric was obtained already after 240-270 min of sonophotocatalysis. Corona pre-treated PP non-woven fabric loaded with Ag nanoparticles prior to deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles provided excellent degradation efficiency and superior reusability. Sonophotocatalytic degradation of dye in the presence of all investigated samples was the most prominent in acidic conditions. Although this nanocomposite system ensured fast discoloration of dye solution, TOC values of water measured after sonophotocatalysis were not satisfactory because of PP degradation. Therefore, it is suggested to include TOC evaluation in each case study where different supports for TiO2 nanoparticles are used since these nanoparticles may guarantee the dye removal from solution but the stability of support could be problematic causing even more serious environmental impact. AB - Nanocomposites (NCs) with different content of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) embeded in polystyrene (PS) matrix were prepared by in situ bulk radical polymerization. The nearly monodisperse Ag NPs protected with oleylamine were synthesized via organic solvo-thermal method and further used as a filler. The as-prepared spherical Ag NPs with diameter of 7.0 +/- 1.5 nm were well dispersed in the PS matrix. The structural properties of the resulting Ag/PS NCs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, while optical properties were characterized using optical absorption measurements. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements showed that the presence of Ag NPs stabilized with oleylamine has no influence on the molecular weight and polydispersity of the PS matrix. The influence of silver content on the thermal properties of Ag/PS NCs was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results indicated that resistance of PS to thermal degradation was improved upon incorporation of Ag NPs. The Ag/PS NCs have lower glass transition temperatures than net PS because loosely packed oleylamine molecules at the interface caused the increase of free volume and chain segments mobility near the surface of Ag NPs.

AB - Polystyrene, one of the most important material in the modern plastic industry and one of the major synthetic polymer in use today, offers an extremely broad range of applications, due to its good physical properties and low-cost. Significant change of mechanical, rheological, thermal, optical, fire retardancy and barrier properties of polystyrene has been obtained by its combination with different nanoparticles. Due to the extremely high interface area between nanoparticles and polystyrene, some new properties could also be generated, which are often necessary to provide in order to meet current and future demands for various significant applications in different fields. In this review, recent advances on nanocomposites based on polystyrene and different kinds of nanoparticles will be presented through the results obtained by authors of this chapter and results given in other literature reports. This chapter reviews the current understanding of polystyrene based nanocomposites with three particular topics: (i) the preparation conditions of nanoparticles for their efficient, homogeneous incorporation in polystyrene matrix, (ii) different approaches for the synthesis of nanocomposites based on polystyrene and (iii) the influence of the type, size and shape of incorporated nanoparticles on the properties of the polystyrene based nanocomposites. The potential applications of these nanocomposites are also highlighted.

was prepared by the simple chemical reduction procedure. TEM and UV–
Vis spectroscopy contributed to the analysis of size and optical properties of
CuNPs, and their antibacterial activity was evaluated toward human

AB - The influence of alkyl gallate surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles on the
rheological properties of long oil alkyd resin, based on soybean oil, was
investigated. Surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles, obtained by acid
catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide, was performed with
propyl, lauryl or cetyl gallate. The average particle size and the crystal
structure of synthesized nanoparticles were estimated by transmission
electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The gallate chemisorption onto
surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by FTIR and UV spectroscopy.
The examined dispersions were prepared by the addition of modified TiO2
nanoparticles to the commercial alkyd resin. The viscosity of the prepared
dispersions was higher than viscosity of the pure resin and it increased with
increasing length of hydrophobic part of the gallate used for surface
modification of TiO2 nanoparticles. This occurred because the increase of
their hydrodynamic volume led to the increase of the effective volume
fraction of particles in dispersion.

AB - Prismatic and plate-like silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized according to the seed-mediated method. These particles were used as precursors for preparation of homogenous, transparent and colored Ag/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite films with different concentrations of Ag by solution-casting technique. Optical and structural characterization of these nanocomposites includes UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR spectroscopy and SEM measurements. Further, the effect of embedded nanoparticles on the thermal properties of the PVA matrix was studied. The value of the glass transition temperature of polymer is found to increase after embedding Ag NPs. Comparison of thermal properties of pure PVA and nanocomposite films showed that the thermo-oxidative stability of polymer slightly increased in the presence of Ag NPs. Furthermore, the effect of the Ag NPs on the crystallinity of polymer was also observed.

AB - Nanocomposites (NCs) with different amount of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) embedded
in polystyrene (PS) matrix were prepared by in situ radical polymerization. In order to
achieve homogeneous distribution of Ag NPs in the PS matrix, the nearly monodisperse Ag
NPs (7.0 ± 1.5 nm) protected with oleylamine were first synthesized via organic solvothermal
method and further used as a filler. For this purpose, a simple colloidal method
for preparation of Ag NPs in organic solvent was developed. PS was selected as the
polymer matrix based on its optical transparency and high chemical resistance. The gel
permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements showed that the presence of Ag NPs
stabilized with oleylamine during the polymerization of styrene have no influence on the
molecular weight and polydispersity of the PS matrix. The structural properties of the
resulting Ag/PS NCs were characterized by transmission electron microscope and FTIR
spectroscopy. The influence of the presence of Ag NPs and their concentration on the
optical properties of PS matrix was investigated in details using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Since
the PS represents a nonabsorbing medium throughout the visible spectrum, the
improvement of the optical performances of polymer was achieved by incorporation of
the appropriate size Ag NPs with strong plasma resonance absorption.

AB - Combining the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of polyaniline (PANI) with
excellent chemical and physical properties of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) is an efficient
way to create novel functional nanomaterials with potential applications in biosensing and
therapy, energy conversion and storage. In the present work, we report polyaniline/gold
nanocomposite (PANI/Au) obtained by two-phase, water/toluene, interfacial chemical
reaction. The polymerization process occurs at the interface of the organic phase (with
aniline) and acidic water solution (with oxidant and Au NPs). Using this strategy, secondary
growth of PANI could be suppressed. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy
measurements were confirmed that PANI was formed as nanofibers decorated with 17 nm
Au NPs. Characterization of the samples performed with UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy
and XRD technique are used for description of the optical properties, interaction between
components and structure of PANI/Au system. The obtained results indicate that the
present synthetic route produces the PANI in conductive form (doped emeraldine salt
form) with specific electric behavior, which makes PANI/Au nanocomposite suitable
material for a wide range of applications.

AB - Novel poly(urethane-ester-siloxane) networks, based on hydroxypropyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), 4,4'-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate, and hyperbranched polyesters (HBPs) of the second and third pseudogenerations, were synthesized by two-step polymerization. The effects of the PDMS content and pseudogeneration number of HBPs on the structural, thermomechanical, thermal, and surface properties of polyurethanes were investigated. Thermomechanical and thermal properties of polyurethanes and FTIR, SAXS, and SEM results indicated good microphase separated structure. SAXS data suggested that the difference in the HBP pseudogeneration number affects only the global properties of the structure and is much less pronounced than the dependence on the PDMS content, while local properties depend only on the PDMS content. Surface characterization of samples indicated the slightly amphiphilic nature of polyurethanes. The results revealed that the synthesized polyurethanes have good thermal, thermomechanical, and surface properties, which can be tuned and adjusted for coating application by changing the PDMS content or type of the HBP.

AB - Nanocomposites (NCs) comprised of metal nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in polymer
matrices usually exhibit a simple combination of the physical properties of the polymer,
along with the specific optical or electrical characteristics associated with the NPs.
However, novel behavior can arise thanks to synergistic effects between the NPs and
polymer matrix. The present work represents the continuation of our study on the
interaction between silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and polystyrene (PS) matrix that govern
the properties of polymer. Namely, in order to achieve homogeneous distribution of Ag
NPs in the PS matrix, the in situ bulk radical polymerization of styrene was performed in
the presence of monodisperse surface modified Ag NPs. The influence of the presence of
Ag NPs and their concentration on the glass transition temperature and thermal stability
of PS matrix was investigated in details using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and
thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) performed in argon and air atmosphere. The results
indicated that thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of PS were improved upon
incorporation of Ag NPs. The Ag/PS NCs have lower glass transition temperatures than
neat PS because loosely packed oleylamine molecules at the interface caused the increase
of free volume and chain segments mobility near the surface of Ag NPs.

AB - Nanocomposites containing metal nanoparticles, dispersed in electrically conducting
polymers such as polyaniline, show enhanced sensing, electrical and catalytic properties
as compared with those of neat polymer. These composites have generated increasing
interest as advanced technological materials due to synergistic effects of both
components. Here, we report silver/polyaniline (Ag/PANI) nanocomposites obtained
through a two-phase water/toluene interfacial reaction. As prepared silver nanoparticles
in toluene with oleylamine as a reducing and stabilizing agent, were used as nucleation
centers for the polymerization of aniline. Once the polymerization occurs at the
interface of the organic (containing the aniline and the silver nanoparticles) and aqueous
(containing the oxidizing ammonium persulfate agent) phase, the polymer grows around
the silver nanoparticles and forming the nanocomposite structure. The formation of
Ag/PANI nanocomposite was characterized by UV–Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, and
transmission electron microscopy. In contrast to pure PANI, the absorption spectrum of
Ag/PANI nanocomposite showed additional strong band assigned to surface plasmon
resonance absorption of the electrons in the conducting silver bands.

AB - Nanocomposites based on conducting polymer and metal nanoparticles are very
advantageous nanostructures due to their unique optical and conductive properties,
offering the opportunity for many nanotechnological applications. In the present work,
we report polyaniline – gold nanocomposite (PANI/Au) obtained by “in situ” chemical
synthesis route. The chloroaurate ions (AuCl4
-) are used as an oxidant for the oxidative
polymerization of aniline leading to the formation of gold nanoparticles together with
polyaniline. Furthermore, the gold nanoparticles act as nucleation sites for the oxidative
formation of PANI, encapsulating the metal in the form of a polymer/metal composite.
Characterization of the samples, performed with UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy and
XRD technique are used for description of the optical and structural properties of
PANI/Au nanocomposite. Results from the FTIR spectra of the composite material are
consistent with PANI produced using only ammonium persulfate as the oxidant. On the
other hand, UV-Vis results indicate that the optical properties can be tailored from
PANI.

AB - In this report, we describe a simple and rapid chemical reduction method with inert gas
protection, for preparing stable copper nanoparticle with average particle size of 9.4 nm.
In our synthesis route, ascorbic acid is used as antioxidant to effectively prevent the
general oxidation process during copper nuclei formation. As-prepared copper
nanoparticles were transferred from water phase to different organic solvents (hexane,
octane, cyclohexane, and toluene) using oleylamine as a phase transfer agent. This
should allow dispersion of the particles in both polar and nonpolar solvents and avoid
particle aggregation during the solvent exchange process. Transmission electron
microscopy and UV–Vis spectroscopy contributed to the analysis of size and optical
properties of the copper nanoparticles in different media, respectively. The advantages
of such solvent exchange process can be found in the applications of metal particles as
catalysts for organic reactions in nonpolar solvents and in the study of the changes in
surface chemistry depending on the surrounding medium and on the adsorption of
different moieties.

AB - Six polyurethane networks were synthesized from Boltorn (R) hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation, alpha,omega-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS-EO) and 4,4'-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate. The effect of the EO-PDMS-EO content on the properties of prepared polyurethanes was investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), swelling measurements, water contact angle and water absorption. Different techniques (FTIR peak deconvolution, DMTA and SEM) revealed that decrease of EO-PDMS-EO content promotes microphase separation in the synthesized polyurethanes. Samples synthesized with higher EO-PDMS-EO content have more hydrophobic surface and better waterproof performances, but lower crosslinking density. TGA results suggest that thermal stability of the synthesized polyurethane networks in nitrogen is significantly affected by the mutual influence of the crosslinking density and EO-PDMS-EO content. The results obtained in this work indicate that the synthesis of polyurethanes based on hyperbranched polyester and EO-PDMS-EO leads to the creation of networks with good thermal, thermomechanical and surface properties.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the changes in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of silver (Ag) hydrosol and organosols obtained by experimental and theoretical approaches. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) of 5±1.5 nm in diameter were prepared in water by reduction of silver nitrate with sodium borohydride. Nanoparticles were subsequently transferred into different organic solvents (chloroform, hexane, toluene, 1,2-di- chlorobenzene) using oleylamine as a transfer agent. These solvents were chosen because of the differences in their refractive indices. Using UV-Vis absorption spectrophotometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we confirmed that there were no shape and size changes of the nanoparticles upon the transfer to the organic phase. The absorption spectra of the obtained Ag organosols showed changes only in the position of the SPR band depending on the dielectric property of the used solvent. To analyze these changes, absorption spectra were modelled using Mie theory for small spherical particles. The experimental and theoretical resonance values were compared with those predicted by the Drude model and its limitations in the analysis of absorption behavior of Ag NPs in organic solvents were briefly discussed.

AB - Two series of crosslinked poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s were synthesized from α,ω-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS- -EO), 4,4'-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate and Boltorn® hyperbranched polyesters of the second and third pseudo generation, by two-step polymerization in solution. The effect of the EO-PDMS-EO content and functionality of the applied crosslinking agent on the morphology and surface properties of the prepared poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water absorption measurement. Different techniques (FTIR peak deconvolution, SAXS and AFM) revealed that decrease of the crosslinking agent functionality and EO-PDMS-EO content promotes microphase separation in the synthesized poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s. SEM analysis and water absorption experiments showed that, due to the hydrophobic character of EO-PDMS-EO and its ability to migrate to the surface of poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s, samples synthesized with higher EO-PDMS-EO content and crosslinking agents of lower functionality had more hydrophobic surfaces and better waterproof performances. The obtained results indicate that the synthesis of poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s based on EO-PDMS-EO and Boltorn® hyperbranched polyesters leads to the creation of networks with interesting morphological and surface properties, which can be easily tailored by changing the content of EO-PDMS-EO segment or functionality of hyperbranched polyester.

AB - As continue of our previous studies, three silver organosols with different nanoparticles
sizes were used to obtain nanocomposite films based on Ag/PMMA system. Among polymeric
materials, PMMA is well known as a polymeric glass and engineering plastic with a wide range
of applications. One of the objectives of this work is to gain better insight into the properties of
this material upon incorporation of small amount of silver nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles
were synthesized in various organic solvents (toluene, 1.2- dichlorobenzene ) in order to obtain
different sizes of nanoparticles: 7.2 ±2.8 nm, 13.7±2.7 nm and 22.7±3.5 nm. By varying the
heating temperature, solvent and reaction time, we could control the size of nanoparticles. In the
second step, nanocomposites Ag/PMMA were prepared by in-situ bulk polymerization of
methyl methacrylate in the presence of appropriate amount of silver nanoparticles. The size
distribution and morphology of the silver nanopaticles in the nanocomposite films were
determined using TEM measurements. The influence of size and dielectric property of
surrounding media on surface plasmon absorption band of silver nanoparticles are discussed.
UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy have been applied to support the change in the optical and
chemical properties of the silver organosols, as well as transparent and coloured Ag/PMMA
nanocomposite films.

AB - Novel polyurethanes (PUs) were synthesized using hydroxy-terminated hyperbranched polyester (BH-20) and 4,4'-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) as hard segments and hydroxy-terminated ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide triblock copolymer (PDMS-EO) as soft segment, with soft segment content ranging from 30 to 60 wt %. The PUs were synthesized by two-step solution polymerization method. The influence of the soft segment content on the structure, swelling behavior and thermal properties of PUs was investigated. According to the results obtained by swelling measurements, the increase of the hard segment content resulted in the increase of the crosslinking density of synthesized samples. DSC results showed that the glass transition temperatures increase from 36 to 65A degrees C with increasing hard segment content. It was demonstrated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) that thermal stability of investigated PUs increases with increase of the soft PDMS-EO content. This was concluded from the temperatures corresponding to the 10 wt % loss, which represents the beginning of thermal degradation of samples.

AB - A series of six polyurethane (PU) networks was synthesized from Boltorn® hydroxy-functional hyperbranched polyester (HBP) of the second pseudo generation as a cross-linking agent, a,w-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS-EO) and 4,4'-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate, by two-step polymerization in solution. Each sample of the prepared PUs had different EO-PDMS-EO content. The chemical structure of the synthesized networks was analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy. The influence of the EO-PDMS-EO content and type of the solvent on the swelling behavior of the PUs in 2-propanol and toluene was investigated. During the swelling measurements, a certain amount of sol fractions was extracted from the PUs by solvents. According to the 1H-NMR results, sol fractions were mainly composed of the soluble hyperbranched PU, formed during the polymerization by partial modification of the end hydroxyl groups of HBP with NCO-terminated prepolymer synthesized in the first step of the reaction. Chains of the so reacted prepolymer can then fold back and form cyclic products by reaction of the free -NCO group from the NCO-terminated prepolymer with free -OH group of HBP. As the EO-PDMS-EO content increases the amount of the sol fractions and swelling degree also in- creased, indicating that networks with lower EO-PDMS-EO content are more cross-linked and have higher solvent resistance.

AB - Surface modified silver nanoparticles dispersed in chloroform were encapsulated in poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) by in-situ radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile. The particle size distribution of colloidal silver nanoparticles was determined using transmission electron microscopy. The obtained transparent nanocomposite films were characterized using UV–vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Effective medium Maxwell-Garnett theory was used in order to explain optical properties of nanocomposite films taking into account inhomogeneous spatial distribution of silver nanoparticles in PMMA matrix. The influence of the silver nanoparticles on the thermal properties of the PMMA matrix was investigated using thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Thermo-oxidative stability of the PMMA in the presence of low content of inorganic phase is significantly improved. The glass transition temperatures of nanocomposites are slightly lower compared to the pure polymer.

AB - Rheological (in solution and in melt) and thermal properties of aliphatic hydroxy-functional Boltorn® hyperbranched polyesters of different pseudo generation were investigated in this work. The obtained results show that 40 wt.% solutions of Boltorn® samples in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinon exhibit Newtonian behaviour at 30 oC and that zero shear viscosity increases with increase of the generation number, i.e. molar mass. On the other side, vales of the Tg show only slight increase with increase of the molar mass. Thermal stability of investigated samples increases with increase of the number of generation.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the antimicrobial efficiency and color changes of cotton fabrics
loaded with colloidal silver nanoparticles which were synthesized without using any stabilizer. The influence
of colloidal concentration and consequently, the amount of silver deposited onto the fabric surface,
on antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacterium
Staphylococcus aureus and fungus Candida albicans as well as laundering durability of obtained effects
were studied. Although cotton fabrics loaded with silver nanoparticles from 10 ppm colloid exhibited
good antimicrobial efficiency, their poor laundering durability indicated that higher concentrated colloids
(50 ppm) must be applied for obtaining long-term durability. Additionally, the influence of dyeing with
C.I. Direct Red 81 on antimicrobial activity of cotton fabrics loaded with silver nanoparticles as well as the
influence of their presence on the color change of dyed fabrics were evaluated. Unlike color change, the
antimicrobial efficiency was not affected by the order of dyeing and loading of silver nanoparticles.
