AB - Bifidogenic effect is growth stimulation of bifidogenic bacteria - probiotics in the intestinal tract by the effect of food ingredients which are prebiotics for these bacteria. Beside nutritive and biological values, bifidogenic effect is one of the most important indicators for the baby’s food quality. In this paper in vitro bifidogenic effect was checked by testing of six infant formulas in powder from the market (one domestic and five imported products). Mature breast milk was reference substrate. The effects of in vitro bifidogenesis of the infant formulas were observed in the beginning, and after 48 h of the test, and two kinds of parameters were monitored: microbiological (microscopic observation, total bifidobacterial counts and dry biomass) and biochemical (pH, total bacterially generated organic acids - computed as lactic acid and mole ration of acetic and lactic acid). Pancreatin digestion preceded bifidobacteria biomass inoculation. As a discriminatory criterion for investigation of bifidogenic effects, we introduced Bifidogenic Index. In several repeated experiments, we proved that although infant formulas have similar declared nutritive and biological characteristics, there are also important differences in bifidogenic properties between individual products, which are the indicator of their quality in a whole. Domestic products have had best bifidogenic effect.

AB - Within this paper a new idea for the removal of organically bonded sulphur from fossil fuels is discussed. Dibenzothiophene (DBT) was used as a model compound of organicmolecules containing sulphur. This form of (bio)desulphurization was performed by an indirect mechanism in which iron(III) ions generated from pyrite by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans performed the abiotic oxidation. The obtained reaction products, dibenzothiopene sulfoxide and dibenzothiophene sulfone, are more soluble in water than the basic substrate and the obtained results confirmed the basic hypothesis and give the possibility of continuing the experiments related to application of this (bio)desulphurization process. .

AB - The association patterns of xylene and of total phosphorus with sediment constituents in an alluvial aquifer consisting of clays and sands which had been contaminated by a spill of technical grade xylene were investigated with the aim of assessing the dependence of in situ xylene degradation on the P-availability. The investigated alluvial sediments of the Makiš Plain (Sava river alluvion, Quaternary age, Serbia and Montenegro) are relatively poor in P. The most reliable associations were proposed by analyzing the quality of the correlations of xylene- and of P-contents with 32 sediment characteristics. The association patterns depend on the mineralogical and granulometrical composition of sediments, the structural characteristics of the organicmatter (N/C-ratio) and the redox-conditions. Differing association patterns in the clays and the sand had been developed, and these characteristics influence the intrinsic xylene degradation. The main proof for the occurrence of xylene degradation is the percentul share of bacteria which oxidize xylene as a single carbon-source.

The main proof for the occurrence of xylene degradation is the percentul share of bacteria which oxidize xylene as a single carbon-source., Ispitivani su glineni i peskoviti sedimenti Makiškog polja, zagađeni ksilenom (26-17800μg/kg), s ciljem da se utvrdi uticaj asocijacija ksilen-supstrat odnosno fosfor-supstrat na in situ degradaciju ksilena.

AB - The results of kinetic studies of bacterial depyritization of HCl-kerogen concentrate of Aleksinac (Serbia) oil shale by the chemolithoautotrophic thionic bacteria Thiobacillus ferrooxidans under discontinuous laboratory conditions at various temperatures (0, 20, 28 and 37 ºC) at a pH of ca. 1.5 are presented in this paper. Low pH prevents the occurrence of the precipitation of iron(III)-ion hydrolysis products on the substrate particles and thereby reduces the process efficiency. Bacterial depyritization is developed as per kinetics of the first order. The activation energy which points to a successive mechanism of pyrite biooxidation, was computed from the Arrhenius plot. The biochemical kinetics indicators point to a high affinity of the bacteria toward pyrite but small values of Vmax, which are probably the result of decelerated metabolic processes due to the low pH value of the environment resp. the large difference of thepHbetween the external medium and the cell interior.

AB - Experiments are presented aimed at removing the silicates from an oil shale by a chemoorganoheterotrophic bacterium, Bacillus circulans. This process was expected to substitute the drastic HF-treatment in the kerogen concentrate preparation procedure. Three Bacillus circulans strains were isolated from siliceous habitats. Tests showed that they were not using the shale organic matter as source of carbon. The substrates were the raw oil shale from Aleksinac, Yugoslavia (-0.063 mm), and the corresponding neutralized HCl- and HCl-kerogen-concentrates. The solid/liquid ratio was 1:10 (w/v), the liquid phase being 2% glycerol in distilled water. In all experiments with the shale concentrates, the pH decreased to ca 3. This resulted in a decrease of the number of bacteria and hence failure in demineralization, the lowest pH limit for the growth being ca 4. The raw shale was shown to be the most favourable substrate due to the buffer effect of the carbonates. The achieved leaching was obviously much better but not yet optimal. So far the total effects were found to be 21.4, 18.7 and 17.2%, respectively. Several possible ways are suggested for improving the efficiency of the process.
