AB - Growing industrialization and non-renewable resource depletion have a huge impact on alternative clean up technologies development, inducing investigation of the renewable, low-cost waste materials. Recently, lignocellulosic waste biomass, generated at a large scale by different industries, appeared as an attractive feedstock worldwide, due to its abundance, availability, multi-functionality and low cost. Since the fruits production has increasing trend all over the world, generation of lignocellulosic waste such as fruit stones (that represent approximately 1/5 of the total fruit mass) became a great environmental threat. In order to minimize negative impact on the environment, avoid greenhouse gasses emissions and help in resource depletion by its renewable nature, it is necessary to explore its performances regarding its wide application potential. Thermo-chemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass in oxygen limited conditions, in order to get biochar, has received a lot of attention recently. The biochar production requires lower energy inputs and less expensive technology compared to activated carbon (estimation is that production cost of activated carbon are six times higher than biochar costs). In this paper, waste peach stones biomass was effectively converted into biochar at 500 °C under inert (Ar) atmosphere. Pyrolysis was performed in Nabertherm 1300 muffle furnace for residence time of 1.5 h, with a heating rate of 10 °C/min, while Ar was circulated through the sample at a rate of 100 mL/min. The raw biomass (PS) and obtained biochar (PS-B) with particle size 0.1 mm < dp < 0.5 mm, were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and Raman spectrometry to understand physicochemical changes which have been occurred after pyrolysis. SEM analysis revealed the increased surface area due to the visible augmentation of pores and roughness. FTIR analysis showed that many bands present in native biomass cannot be observed in biochar, due to the conversion or removal of the most of the functional groups. Prominent bands have confirmed presences of aromatic compounds in biochar: at 1592 cm−1 (C=C bond stretching derived from aromatic rings in the lignin), 1030 cm-1 (alcohol C-O stretching vibration) and in the region 900 to 700 cm−1 (originating from aromatic compounds). These finding are in accordance with results from Raman analysis, where D and G bands (at 1350 cm-1 and 1580 cm-1 respectively), indicate the presence of poly-aromatic hydrocarbons. Thermo-chemically modified biomass like this has a great application potential: as a pollutants sorbent, biofuel, soil amendment, biocarriers, and in construction and electronic industries.

AB - Infant nutrition is essential for their growth and development. This research aims to determine the total antioxidant capacity of the infant food for preterm infants and indicate adequate methods for testing the quality and biological value of milk and infant food. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was determined in human milk and an infant formula for premature infants. The determination of the total antioxidant capacity was made using cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry, potentiometry and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results of three comparative electrochemical methods indicate that human milk has a higher antioxidant potential compared to infant formula, which contributes to better physiological development of the child. Fenton-based electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy method provides additional insight into TAC analysis, whereby a carbon-centered radical and an ascorbyl radical are formed in infant food. All methods can be used to determine TAC, since the results obtained individually with each method follow the same trend.

AB - The mutual interaction of metal ions (lead, zinc and copper) on removal efficiency in binary and
ternary systems, by biosorbent based on alkali treated apricot shells (Prunus armeniaca L.) was
examined. The evaluation was done in batch system at two metals concentrations: 0.2 and 0.5mmol/
dm3. Tested biosorbent exhibited preferential uptake of lead in a multimetal systems. It is evident that mutual inhibition exists in all multimetal systems, but systems containing lead ex-hibited extreme inhibition toward copper and zinc ions. Process of sorption depends not only on specific chemistry of each metal, their affinity toward binding sites and the type of metal binding onto biosorbent, but also on sorbent chemical and morphological characteristics. In multimetal systems, tested sorbent showed preferential sorption orders: Pb (II)>Cu (II)>Zn (II).

AB - Renewable hydrogen produced from the waste streams can be a good option for clean energy production and reduction of greenhouse gases emissions into the environment. In this study, the potential for hydrogen production from the food industry wastewaters in Serbia and the further use of the calculated potentials were investigated. This was performed through two technological routes including the biogas steam reforming process and the electrolysis after biogas cogeneration process. Furthermore, the environmental impacts of these processes were considered. The total hydrogen potential via the biogas steam reforming process was 4094.70 tons, while the total hydrogen potential via the electrolysis after biogas cogeneration process was 1751.08 tons. These potentials can be used for direct energy production in the food industry, electricity production for the national electric grid, transport, injection in the natural gas grid and/or as a resource in the chemical industry. Regarding the Greenhouse Gas emissions reduction, hydrogen production by both routes represents a promising pathway. The results of this work can serve the decision makers to plan hydrogen application in the energy sector of the Republic of Serbia defining supporting measures for its application. Also, the presented analysis is enforceable in the Western Balkan countries for the application of hydrogen as an energy source in their systems for energy production, transport and economy.

Regarding the Greenhouse Gas emissions reduction, hydrogen production by both routes represents a promising pathway. The results of this work can serve the decision makers to plan hydrogen application in the energy sector of the Republic of Serbia defining supporting measures for its application. Also, the presented analysis is enforceable in the Western Balkan countries for the application of hydrogen as an energy source in their systems for energy production, transport and economy.",

AB - Expanded vermiculite (EV) was modified by deposition of different spinel ferrite composites on the outer surface of EV 2:1 layers in order to improve its adsorptive properties. Modifications were made by deposition of: magnetite, manganese ferrite, cobalt ferrite and chromium oxide/hematite. The characterization of modified materials was performed by: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) methodology, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), magnetization measurements, as well as determination of cation exchange capacity (CEC) and pH point of zero charge (pHPZC). Obtained samples were used as adsorbents for Pb2+, Ni2+and Cd2+ ions from an aqueous solution in a batch system. Results showed that adsorption capacity was strongly dependent on physical and chemical changes induced by specific chemical modification. Hydrothermally produced manganese and cobalt ferrites caused significant surface changes and altered the interlayer cation balance. Among the others, EV-Mn/Co-ferrite(s) samples possessed the highest adsorption capacity towards Ni2+ (33.06 mg g-1), along with an increase of the CEC. Freundlich's adsorption isotherm model provided the best fit of obtained experimental data, while kinetic studies showed that the adsorption rate follows the pseudo second-order model, implying heterogeneous adsorbents surface. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters indicated that the mechanism of cations removal efficacy was dominantly followed by the ion exchange. This study confirmed that doped ferrites, produced by solvothermal method, improve surface properties of EV and increase adsorption potentials towards heavy metals.

AB - Water contaminated with diesel oil represents one of the greatest challenges in waste water
management. Water soluble fraction (WSF) is of particular interest because of its toxicity to
aquatic organisms and discharge regulations set by environmental authorities. Biochar
sorbents have attracted great attention, due to their low cost origin and advantageous
properties as well as high sorption capacities in sorption processes. In this study, we have
reported the synthesis and characteristics of novel biochar sorbent made from waste
lignocellulosic biomass (peach stones (PS)) and evaluated its possible application in removal
of diesel WSF from synthetic water. Physiochemical characteristics of the biochar sample
were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET)
method, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), along with the elemental
analysis. Characterisation of PS biochar (PS-B) indicated high multi porous surface area
(159.1 m2 g
-1
) with the average pore diameter 2.7 nm. FTIR results indicated higher presence
of aromatic compounds in PS-B as compared to PS. The sorption experiments performed in
a batch system using PS-B resulted in more than 95 % removal of diesel WSF, reaching
equilibrium after 5 h. Equilibrium data were well fitted by Freundlich isotherm, while the
pseudo-second order equation fitted well the kinetic data, indicating chemisorption
involving valency forces through the sharing/exchange of electrons between the sorbent and
PS-B. Applications of ecotoxicology tests based on a microbial biosensor (Aliivibrio fischeri)
have shown a significant toxicity reduction of water sample after the treatment with biochar

AB - The minerals with unique properties such as mica minerals have promising approach in environmental and industrial sphere. In this study, cobalt ferrite/expanded vermiculite (CoFe2O4/EV) composite was prepared by in-situ method. Both composite and base materials are characterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM techniques, while the CEC and point of zero charge (pHPZC) was also determined. The adsorption properties of CoFe2O4/EV and EV have been investigated in a batch system, for the Ni (II) sorption from water. Adsorption experimental results were fitted by kinetic and adsorption models, and resulted in ionic exchange mechanism with maximum adsorption capacity of 23.2mg g-1 (298 K).

abstract = "The minerals with unique properties such as mica minerals have promising approach in environmental and industrial sphere. Adsorption experimental results were fitted by kinetic and adsorption models, and resulted in ionic exchange mechanism with maximum adsorption capacity of 23.2mg g-1 (298 K).",

AB - Adsorbents based on magnetic materials are the subject of numerous researches. Beside good magnetism and functional surface, manganese ferrite is unstable and prone to form low mechanical strength agglomerates, which necessitate its deposition on the substrate surface. Expanded vermiculite outer surfac, is a useful medium for the deposition of nanoparticles whereas intercation layer is suitable for holding cation species (distance of 2:1 layers may be greater than 10 Å). Due to its relatively high surface area, cation exchange capacity and natural abundance of vermiculite, this mica mineral and its composites could be valorized as potentially low-cost adsorbents. In this study, manganese ferrite/expanded vermiculite (MnFe2O4/EV) composite was prepared by in-situ method. Deposited manganese ferrite particles on the surface of EV were formed in the solvothermal reaction using suitable reagents. Both composite and base material are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (SSA), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and pH point of zero charge (pHPZC) determination. The adsorption properties of MnFe2O4/EV and EV have been investigated in a batch system at pH close to the pHPZC for the removal of Ni (II) from water. Considering process parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperature: adsorption type, isotherm parameters (Langmuir and Freundlich) and rate of adsorption parameters were determined. Results of the kinetic studies gave fine correlations with pseudo – second order and Weber – Morris model. Taking into consideration fact that EV had low CEC values and SSA, obtained composite have high adsorption capacity (more than 30 mg Ni g-1). Also, X-ray diffractograms showed alteration of biotite vermiculite (formed during solvothermal action) into phlogopite (formed after adsorption process and aging). The methodology applied in this work may be utilized for the fabrication of other ferrite spinels, perovskites and other oxide systems.

AB - A low-cost waste biomass generated from a food industry, apricot shells, was subjected to alkali modification in order to compare morphology, crystalline structure and thermal stability of native and modified biomass, accompanied by their cellulose-rich fractions. The surface morphology and structure of compared samples were analysed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury porosimetry. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal analysis (TG/DTA) were applied. The results have shown that after alkaline treatment, inter- and intra-particle porosity in the material rises, resulting in increase of the total surface area. The XRD diffractograms showed that crystallinity index increased together with crystallite size, suggesting that modified sample has more ordered crystalline structure than native sample (also confirmed by the FTIR analysis). Although the cellulose-rich fraction extracted from the alkali-modified sample showed higher thermal stability, the overall thermal analysis revealed that alkali-modified biomass has lower thermal stability than the native sample. This indicates that this type of modification will improve the fuel properties of this lignocellulosic biomass and imply its possible application in energy recovery process.

AB - The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effectiveness of three different extraction agents for the extraction of 25 elements from sediment samples collected from 4 artificial lakes and 12 rivers in Serbia (33 samples in total). The extraction efficiency of the agents was evaluated by its ability to extract the highest quantity of the elements. For that purpose, three acids (1M HCl, 2M HNO3 and 0.43M CH3COOH) have been used. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used for quantitative determination of following elements: Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, Na, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, V, and Zn. The extraction with 1M HCl has shown the best results for the majority of investigated elements (especially Sr, Mn and Ca). Antimony (Sb) was detected only after extraction with 0.43M CH3COOOH, while selenium (Se) could not be detected when 2M HNO3 was applied as extraction agents. The present study could be very useful for choosing a suitable method for specific elements and also can be helpful in the evaluation of the contaminants in freshwater sediments in Serbia. This might contribute to environmental risk assessment of the present elements.

AB - This paper focuses on lignocellulosic waste biomass originating from food industry, which should find its further application in order to fulfill demands of circular economy. Therefore, here are presented some of the chemical and physical properties that affect combustion process, as well as thermochemical reaction kinetics for lignocellulosic biomass wastes. The biomass investigated was peach stone particles originating from food industry. The results have showed that peach stones can be characterized as good energy alternative renewable material, with properties that allow its safe thermochemical conversion. Kinetic analysis of this biomass was performed using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) with a simple reaction model applied, namely n-th order reaction model. The obtained results have confirmed the complex nature of this material and the need for further modelling.

AB - The object of this study was to investigate the possibility of copper and zinc leaching from polymetallic sulphide ore from the Bobija deposit (Western Serbia) by Acidithiobacillus sp.B2. Iron-oxidizing Acidithiobacillus sp. B2 was isolated from copper sulphide mine wastewater (Lake Robule) in Bor, Serbia. The bacterium was identified by 16SrDNA oligonuckotide sequence. Leaching experiment by the shake flask testing technique was performed during a period of four weeks ata temperature of 28 °C. The percentage of Cu and Zn leached at the end of this experiment was 65% and 67% respectively. This study shows that iron-oxidizing Acidithiobacillus sp. B2 can have a very important role in the extraction of copper and zinc, from polymetallic sulphide ore from the Bobija deposit.

AB - Adsorption is one the best commonly used technique for treatment of petroleum contaminated water. The biosorption potential of waste biomass (peach shell, agro-industrial waste) as a low-cost biosorbent for petroleum hydrocarbon from aqueous solution was explored. Biosorption experiments were carried out using a shake-flask technique with a constant amount of (bio) sorbent of 1 g mixed with 100 ml of water contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons at concentrations of 4 mg/L, 12 mg/L, 18 mg/L, 24 mg/L, 30 mg/L, 40 mg/L and 80 mg/L. The obtained results show that waste biomass is efficient in the removal of petroleum pollutants from the water solution. Biosorption is a potentially alternative technique for wastewater treatment. Their major advantages are low cost, high efficiency, renewability.
Njene glavne prednosti su niska cena, visoka efikasnost i obnovljivost.
