AB - Along six transects in each of six lakes across the Western Balkans, we collected data for three groups of littoral biological water quality indicators: epilithic diatoms, macrophytes, and benthic invertebrates. We assessed the relationships between them and three environmental pressures: nutrient load (eutrophication), hydro-morphological alteration of the shoreline, and water level variation, separating the effect of individual lakes and continuous explanatory variables. Lake water total phosphorus concentration (TP) showed substantial variation but was not related to any of the tested biological indicators, nor to any of the tested pressures. We suggest that this may be due to feedback processes such as P removal in the lake littoral zone. Instead, we found that a gradient in surrounding land-use towards increasing urbanization, and a land-use-based estimate of P run-off, served as a better descriptor of eutrophication. Overall, eutrophication and water level fluctuation were most important for explaining variation in the assessed indicators, whereas shoreline hydro-morphological alteration was less important. Diatom indicators were most responsive to all three pressures, whereas macrophyte biomass and species number responded only to water level fluctuation. The Trophic Diatom Index for Lakes (TDIL) was negatively related to urbanization and wave exposure. This indicates that it is a suitable indicator for pressures related to urbanization, although a confounding effect of wave exposure is possible. Invertebrate abundance responded strongly to eutrophication, but the indicator based on taxonomic composition (Average Score Per Taxon) did not. Our results suggest that our metrics can be applied in Western Balkan lakes, despite the high number of endemic species present in some of these lakes. We argue that local water management should focus on abating the causes of eutrophication and water level fluctuation, whilst preserving sufficient lengths of undeveloped shoreline to ensure good water quality in the long run.

AB - The main aim of this study was to investigate the application of benthic diatoms and the efficiency of diatom
indices in water ecological assessment of rivers in Serbia, as well as the influence of trout farms on rivers water
quality. Research was conducted in one year period along the Crnica and Radovanska rivers (Eastern Serbia), in
11 sampling sites (taking into account the position of trout fish farms that are built on both rivers). Results
showed that fish farms affect the physical and chemical parameters, as well as diversity of the epilithic diatom
assemblage along the rivers. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that among tested physical and
chemical parameters, conductivity “EC”, water hardness “WH”, sulfates “SO42-”, ionized ammonia fraction “NH4+”,
nitrates “NO3–
“, “pH”, mud, stone and depth were the most important variables affecting the distribution of
diatom species. A total of 206 epilithic diatom taxa were recorded in the Radovanska and 170 in the Crnica River.
Based on diatom indices, trout fish farms have no significant negative impact on the water quality of the
investigated rivers (indices are not enough sensitive). Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed a high degree of
correlation between the majority of indices which mostly indicated to good water quality of studied rivers. TID
and TDI were the only two indices indicating moderate and poor water quality of both rivers. Water quality based
on the TIDRS, the first proposed diatom index for Serbia was differ in two classes in most sites compairing with
TID.

and their effects on lake ecosystems, for the Water Framework Directive. However, correlations between metrics
andwater chemistry are often poor. This is seen as majorweaknesses ofWater Framework Directive-relatedmonitoring
and assessment. We analyzed macrophytes, benthic algae, benthic macroinvertebrates, water chemistry
and sediment total phosphorus content in the littoral of six lakes in the Western Balkans and used CORINE land
use data to estimate nutrient enrichment via runoff from the adjacent land. Lakes with a higher estimated phosphorus
runoff fromthe adjacent land did not have higher littoralwater nutrient concentrations, but littoral diatom
assemblages indicated more eutrophic conditions. These lakes also had higher abundances of littoral benthic primaryproducers,
which in turnwere associatedwithlowconcentrations of dissolved nutrients, but only in autumn,
not in spring. This is consistent with primary producers taking up nutrients during the summer growth season. In
lakeswith high abundances of benthic primary producers, it is likely that the littoral vegetation plays a large role in
the transfer of nutrients from the water to the benthos. This process impairs correlations between biological metrics
and water nutrient concentrations. Our results suggest that CORINE land cover may be more useful to characterize
littoral nutrient enrichment than lake water chemistry. Increased benthic primary producer biomasses and
“eutrophic” diatom indicesmay indicate littoral nutrient enrichment even ifwater nutrient concentrations are low

AB - Trout farms are one of the major sources of pollution of highland streams and rivers. Since river sediment burdened with organic pollution binds greater amounts of heavy metals we investigated the influence of the trout farm on the accumulation of metals in the sediment, water and Ephemera danica larvae. Research was conducted seasonally (April, July, and October of 2015 and January of 2016) at one control locality (SK1) and three localities downstream from the farm (SK2-SK4). In agreement with the hypothesis the fish farm discharge induced localized and statistically significant increase of concentrations of Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Cd in sediment and E. danica larvae, but not in water at locality SK2 just below the fish farm indicating that sediment is the main source of heavy metals for this organism. However, according to the values of Biota sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) only metals with low sediment concentrations (As, Cd and Cu) accumulated in the larvae. Moreover, BASF values for toxic metals (As, Cd and Cr) showed negative correlation with their concentrations in sediment indicating existence of defense mechanisms in E. danica against assimilation of these metals in high concentrations lethal for it. On the other hand, BSAF values for essential microelements (Cu and Fe) were positively correlated with their sediment concentrations. In conclusion the trout farm induced accumulation of heavy metals in river sediment and E. danica larvae proved to be a good bioindicators of the pollution of river systems by As, Cd and Cu.

AB - Sava Lake was created from the right arm of the Sava River, and the inhabitants of Belgrade use the lake intensively for swimming and bathing. We analysed macrozoobenthos and epilithic diatom communities at six sites from April to October 2017, to assess the ecological status of Sava Lake according to the National legislation of Serbia. Considering macrozoobenthos communities, the mean values of Zelinka and Marvan saprobity index indicated high ecological status. In contrast, results obtained from the mean values of BMWP (Biological Monitoring Working Party) scores suggested moderate to poor ecological status. The mean values of the IPS diatom index (Indice de Polluo-sensibilité) indicated high ecological status, while the TDIL index (Trophic Diatom Index for lakes) was slightly more sensitive and indicated good ecological status. Water chemical parameters indicated that Sava Lake was mainly oligotrophic during the study period (average total phosphorus concentrations were 10.7 μgL-1 and average total nitrogen concentrations 410 μgL-1). Before being able to adopt an integrative approach for ecological status assessment (combining two or more biological quality elements), more studies must be performed on how to choose the most sensitive and adequate indices. This is especially true for lakes experiencing intensive anthropogenic pressure during the summer season. Also, the boundary values in the National legislation of Serbia must be adapted for lakes, such as Sava Lake.

AB - Epilithic diatoms are frequently recommended for river biomonitoring, while much less emphasis is placed on epiphytic communities.
This study considers use of epiphytic and epilithic diatom communities from the Raška River in biomonitoring. A total
of 212 diatom taxa were recorded in both communities. Dominant diatoms were Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing)
Czarnecki, A. affine (Grunow) Czarnecki, A. subatomus (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot, Amphora pediculus (Kützing) Grunow,
Diatoma vulgaris Bory, Gomphonema tergestinum (Grunow) Fricke, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata (Ehrenberg) Van
Heurck, Melosira varians Agardh and Navicula tripunctata (Müller) Bory. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to detect
the relationships between diatoms, some environmental factors and sampling sites. Diatoms of the epiphytic community showed
a clearly grouping in relation to the sampling sites as compared with diatoms of the epilithic community. Species common to both
communities showed a similar correlation with some environmental variables (BOD, pH, NH4
+, TP, NO3
− and conductivity),
with three exceptions (Diatoma vulgaris, Cymbella compacta, and Encyonema silesiacum). Pearson’s correlation coefficient
showed correlation between selected environmental variables and diatom indices calculated usingOMNIDIA 6.2 software (TDI,
IPS, CEE, GENRE, TID, SID, SHE and IDSE/5). Diatoms of the epiphytic community are more clearly clustered in relation to
the sampling sites as compared with diatoms of the epilithic community. According to our results there is still Bplace^ in
biomonitoring for epiphytic community. The present study highlights the necessity of sampling both epiphytic and epilithic
communities because substrate specificity could play important role in biomonitoring.

AB - The Rasina River is right tributary of the Zapadna Morava River, situated in central Serbia. The samples were collected in spring (April), summer (July) and autumn 2011, from 6 localities along the river at an altitudes between 640 – 704 m a.s.l. Sampling sites are located before and after trout pond. Epilithic samples were scraped from the surface of stones by brush. Light microscope observations and micrographs were made using a Zeiss AxioImagerM.1 microscope with DIC optics and AxioVision 4.8 software. At least 400 valves were counted in order to calculate relative abundance (%) of each taxon. The biological assessment of water quality was performed calculating diatom indices by OMNIDIA 5.3 software.
A total of 166 taxa belonging to 45 genera were identified in the studied samples. The most numerous were taxa of genus: Nitzschia (26), Navicula (22) and Gomphonema (15). The dominant taxa during spring were Achnanthidium pyrenaicum and Diatoma ehrenbergii, during summer were A. pyrenaicum and Cocconeis placentula var. lineata and during autumn was only C. placentula var. lineata. Diatom richness before trout farm was higher than after, which confirms its impact. The higest diversity was in spring and constantly decreasing through seasons.
The Rasina River was characterized by good to very good ecological status of water, with slightly differences between the values of the diatom indices during the seasons (spring, summer, autumn, respectively).
Fish feed remains can cause enrichment of the water with nutrients (in the form of ammonia, phosphorus, nitrogen) and most often leads to eutrophication which can be seen on the basis of the dominant species during the seasons. Change of dominant species between the seasons in the Rasina River was correlated with the values of nutrients.
