AB - In this article the influence of ball milling process on structure of MgO-TiO2 system, along with its influence on electrical properties of post-sintering samples, were investigated. Mixtures of MgO-TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for time interval from 0 to 120 minutes. On thus obtained powders, structural investigations have been performed. N2 adsorption method was used to determine the BET specific surface area and pore size distribution. Unusual results were obtained: specific surface area continuously decreases up to 40 minutes of activation and after that increases, reaching its minimum value of 5.5 m2/g. The influence of mechanical activation on lattice vibration spectra was examined by Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. For sintered samples characterization, Raman scattering spectroscopy has been used. Very similar spectra for all samples were observed. Raman spectroscopy of sintered samples indicates a presence of two phases, while varieties in spectra were explained with different ratio of present phases. Effect of activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements showed difference in dielectric constant (εr), loss tangent (tgδ) and specific resistance (ρ) as a function of time of mechanical treatment.

SEM gave information about changes in microstructures, showing the clear decrease in particle size.

AB - Room temperature far infrared reflectivity spectra of single phase spinel zinc-stannate thin films, prepared by rf magnetron sputtering on a glass substrate, and bulk sintered samples were measured. The sintered samples were obtained by mechanical activation of starting ZnO and SnO2 powders for 10 min followed by sintering at 1300 °C for 2 h. The reflectivity diagrams obtained for bulk samples were numerically analyzed using the four-parameter model of coupled oscillators. The optical parameters were determined for six observed ionic oscillators belonging to the spinel structure and two additional oscillators originating from the sintering procedure resulting from pores and grain boundaries. The reflectivity diagrams obtained for thin film samples were analyzed using the four-parameter model for optical phonons with a standard optical multi-layer technique.

AB - Far infrared reflection spectra of NiO polycrystals sintered at 1100 °C for various times (30–240 min) were measured at room temperature using a FTIR Spectrometer—Brucker 113V. The measured spectra depended on the sintering time due to differences in the microstructural morphology of the material and were compared with the NiO single crystal reflectivity diagram. Numerical analyses of the experimental spectra were performed using Kramers-Kronig analysis, a four-parameter model of coupled oscillators and the effective medium modeling theory. In the three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory we assumed the presence of pores, intergranular material and crystalline grains. The intergranular material and crystalline grains were defined as single and coupled ionic oscillators.

AB - Far-infrared reflection spectra of sintered α-MnSe were measured at room temperature. The measured spectrum had one pronounced peak in accordance with literature data and group theory estimation and one smaller peak resulting from the applied sintering procedure. The measured reflection spectrum was analyzed using Kramers–Kronig analysis and a three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory assuming the presence of a small amount of pores, dominant crystalline grains and intergranular material. In the model the crystalline grains were modeled as a single oscillator appropriate to the single crystal and the intergranular material was also defined as a single ionic oscillator.

AB - The possibility of characterization of aluminium powders using a horizontal coherer has been considered. Al powders of known dimension were treated with a high frequency electromagnetic field or with a DC electric field, which were increased until a dielectric breakdown occurred. Using a multifunctional card PC-428 Electronic Design and a suitable interface between the coherer and PC, the activation time of the coherer was measured as a function of powder dimension and the distance between the coherer electrodes. It was also shown that the average dimension of powders of unknown size could be determined using the coherer.

AB - Far-infrared and infrared reflectivity measurements have been made on pure BaTiO3, BaTiO3 doped with 5 mol% LiF and (Ba,Ca,Pb)TiO3 at room temperature in the range between 50 and 1000 cm–1. A fitting procedure, based on a four-parameter model, and Kramers-Krönig analysis of the spectra were performed and the optical parameters of the observed ionic oscillators determined. Group theory analysis has been done and the number of experimentally observed active modes was compared with theoretical predictions. It was shown that the high frequency dielectric permittivity increases from 1.88 to 5.13 for pure BaTiO3 sintered at 1320 °C for 2 to 10 h, respectively. It is also shown that infrared optical reflectivity measurements could give useful results for boundary cases when it is difficult to distinguish if a sample has a cubic or tetragonal structure. Reflectivity data and its numerical analysis can also give information on the degree of the sintering process and density of the samples.

abstract = "Far-infrared and infrared reflectivity measurements have been made on pure BaTiO3, BaTiO3 doped with 5 mol% LiF and (Ba,Ca,Pb)TiO3 at room temperature in the range between 50 and 1000 cm–1.
