AB - Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is one of the most notorious pollutants with
health and environmental impacts due to carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic
effects on the human organism.1 Therefore, treating wastewater containing Cr(VI)
before discharge into the aquatic system is extremely necessary. In this study, the
nonlinear regression method was used to determine the kinetic and isotherm
parameters for Cr(VI) sorption from aqueous solution on hexamethylene diaminemodified 177btain177177ous copolymer based on glycidyl methacrylate (PGEHMD).2 The Avrami kinetic model provides the best correlation of the experimental data with R2 = 0.994 and χ2 = 0.004, while the Freundlich isotherm model best described the Cr(VI) sorption onto PGE-HMD copolymer indicating a heterogenous sorption process.

AB - This study evaluated the equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics of vanadium sorption from aqueous solution onto nanocomposite functionalized with diethylene triamine in batch conditions. The effects of temperature, solution pH, and initial concentration of vanadium were examined. The maximum sorption capacity of vanadium on the tested sorbent was achieved at pH 6. The sorption capacity increased with increasing temperature and initial concentration. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Jovanovic, Toth, Sips, Khan, and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. The kinetics data were studied using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, the fractional power, Elovich, and Avrami models. A non-linear fitting method was used to compare the best fitting of the equilibrium and kinetic data. The sorption equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir, Khan, Toth, and Redlich–Peterson isotherms. The adsorption kinetics was estimated to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The mechanism of vanadium sorption was analyzed with intra-particle, Bangham, Boyd, and liquid film diffusion models. It was observed that the sorption process was controlled by the film-diffusion as well as the pore-diffusion. Thermodynamic parameters (change of standard enthalpy (ΔH°), standard entropy (ΔS°), and standard free energy (ΔG°)) suggested that the sorption of vanadium onto functionalized nanocomposite was a spontaneous and endothermic process.

AB - Silver as one of the most known precious metal is used on a large scale in various industrial
branches and the release of silver ions from such industrial activities potentially can cause
serious environmental problems. Therefore, the removal of this metal from wastewater is a great
challenge, and it is crucial for the quality improvement of the environment. Porous polymer
materials with high specific surface areas and other specific physical and chemical
characteristics have gained much attention as sorbents in the field of environmental protection.
In this paper, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)
copolymer synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with
diethylenetriamine was employed for silver ions sorption from aqueous solution at unadjucted
pH and room temperature. The sorption kinetics and isotherms were studied to establish the
mechanisms of sorption process. The kinetic data were modeled with pseudo-first-order (PFO),
pseudo-second-order (PSO), Elovich and fractional power (FP) models as well as intraparticle
diffusion (IPD) and liquid diffusion model (LFD), while the equilibrium data were analized
using Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. Eight error functions
such as coefficient of determination (R2), Marquardt’s percent standard deviation (MPSD), Chisquare
statistic test (χ2), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID), the root mean square error
(RMSE), the sum of the errors squared (SSE), sum of the absolute errors (SAE), and average
relative error (ARE) were used to estimate the error deviations between theoretically predicted
and experimental values of sorption capacities. The best kinetic and isotherm models were
determined by normalizing eight error functions and finding the sum of normalized error value
(SNE). The sorption kinetic studies revealed that the sorption of silver by macroporous aminofunctionalized
sorbent obeys the PSO kinetic model. In addition, the results indicate that
sorption was governed by intraparticle diffusion with the evident influence of liquid film
diffusion. The obtained results showed that the sorption isotherm data were satisfactorily fitted
to the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model.

AB - The contamination of water with chromium is a global issue that is especially severe in developing countries with intensive mining and heavy industry (South Africa, Pakistan, and India) [1,2]. Trivalent Cr(III) and hexavalent Cr(VI) are the most common forms found in effluent water. Whereas trivalent chromium is a micronutrient (25–35 g/day) involved in the metabolism of lipids and carbohydrates [3,4], hexavalent chromium is exceedingly toxic, teratogenic, and mutagenic. Particularly concerning are its high solubility in water, mobility in detritus, and potential for bioaccumulation in living tissues. Due to these factors, hexavalent chromium has been the subject of numerous studies, especially its removal from effluent [5,6]. These studies have demonstrated that sorption is a highly effective and relatively simple technique for chromium removal from wastewater. In terms of this, magnetic heavy metals nanosorbents derived from inorganic compounds and polymers [7-9] are incredibly intriguing, because they could have been readily extracted from the mixture using an external magnetic field. The sorption investigation of hexavalent chromium in aqueous solutions on the magnetic aminofunctionalized polymer nanocomposite based on glycidyl methacrylate, m-PGMA revealed its highly selectivity and efficiency. [10,11]. The binding mechanism of hexavalent chromium ions onto m-PGMA was investigated using kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic experiments as well as molecular modeling techniques (theoretical quantum-chemical calculations) [12-15]. It was observed that the process occurs in two phases. In the first phase, electrostatic interactions attract hexavalent chromium ions to the surface of the sorbent via the active sites (amino and APTMS groups). Cr(VI) is then converted to Cr(III) ions, which can coordinate with amino or hydroxyl groups on the surface of the sorbent [16]. The trivalent chromium ions that persist in the solution or on the surface of the sorbent are less hazardous than the initial hexavalent form. The application of m-PGMA sorbent enables the transformation of the toxic form of chromium into a less hazardous form, which is significant due to the possibility of sorbent regeneration and the subsequent processing of the solution following sorption.

In this paper, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)
copolymer synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with
diethylenetriamine was employed for silver ions sorption from aqueous solution at unadjusted
pH and room temperature. The sorption kinetics and isotherms were studied to establish the
mechanisms of sorption process. The kinetic data were modeled with pseudo-first-order (PFO),
pseudo-second-order (PSO), Elovich and fractional power (FP) models as well as intraparticle
diffusion (IPD) and liquid diffusion model (LFD), while the equilibrium data were analized using
Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. Eight error functions such as
coefficient of determination (R2), Marquardt’s percent standard deviation (MPSD), Chi-square
statistic test (χ2), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID), the root mean square error
(SNE). The sorption kinetic studies revealed that the sorption of silver by macroporous
amino-functionalized sorbent obeys the PSO kinetic model. In addition, the results indicate that
sorption was governed by intraparticle diffusion with the evident influence of liquid film
diffusion. The obtained results showed that the sorption isotherm data were satisfactorily fitted
to the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model.

AB - Kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic of arsenate sorption onto magnetic polymer sorbent based on glycidyl methacrylate were investigated. The maximum sorption capacity of 0.59 mg/g was obtained. The experimental data were analyzed by seven kinetic models and eight isotherm models. Nonlinear regression method was used to fit the data to the kinetic and isotherm models. Thus, two error functions; coefficient of determination and Chi-square statistic test were applied to evaluate the sorption data. It was shown that arsenate sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with evident influence of pore and film diffusion. The Freundlich and all three-parameter isotherm models proved to be the best representatives of arsenate sorption. Thermodynamic studies implied endothermic and spontaneous process in nature.

AB - Chelating copolymers show high efficiency in sorption of different ionic species in aqueous
solutions. The specific structure of chelating macroporous copolymers made by the porous
matrix and functional groups with the heteroatoms N, O, S and P; allows them to establish
various types of interactions with ions and molecules from the immediate surroundings.
Furthermore amino-functionalized macroporous copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate and
ethylene glycol dimethacrylate poli (GME) has a high capacity and good selectivity for the
precious and heavy metal ions over alkali and alkaline earth metals. In this study, aminofunctionalized
magnetic macroporous m-poli (GME)-deta was fully characterized in terms of its
structural properties using: FTIR, SEM/EDX and XRD analysis. The macroporous copolymer
was further used to investigate the sorption of pentavalent vanadium oxyanions from diluted
aqueous solutions (Ci = 25 ppm) in a batch system, at room temperature (298 K). The oxyanion
concentrations in a solution was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission
spectroscopy (ICP-AES).The pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), Elovich
and intra-particle diffusion (IPD) models were used to analyze the kinetic data.
The study has shown that sorption is rapid, i.e. the half-sorption time, t1/2 is approximately 1
minute. Initially, it has been the dominant sorption on the surface of the particles and the
process has been best described by the PSO model (which takes into account the binding
between sorbate and sorbent). The moment it has reached saturation of the sorbents surface
active sites, sorption rate decreases significantly because the sorption has been limited by the
rate of diffusion through the pores and kinetic has been controlled by the intraparticle diffusion
process. IPD kinetic model showed a good fit to the experimental data with R2 values > 0.95.

process has been best described by the PSO model (which takes into account the binding
between sorbate and sorbent). The moment it has reached saturation of the sorbents surface
active sites, sorption rate decreases significantly because the sorption has been limited by the
rate of diffusion through the pores and kinetic has been controlled by the intraparticle diffusion
process. IPD kinetic model showed a good fit to the experimental data with R2 values > 0.95.",

AB - A new metal-chelating glycidyl methacrylate based macroporous copolymer with
ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid functions was tested as a potential Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions sorbent from aqueous solutions. The sorption was studied in non-competitive batch experiments, by varying initial pH and metal concentration, contact time and temperature. Pseudo-first and pseudo-second order model, as well as Bangham, intra-particle and liquid film diffusion models were used to determine the nature of sorption kinetics and the rate of limiting step. Equilibrium sorption data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Elovich isotherm models.

AB - Statistical analysis of data from crystal structures, extracted from Cambridge Structural Database
(CSD) have shown that S and Se atoms in nonpolar environment display similar tendency
toward specified type interactions [1]. The most numerous are structures with C−H···Se and
C−H···S interactions (~80%), while structures with Se···Se and S···S interactions (~5%) are notably
less numerous (second type of interactions). When S or Se atoms is in a polar environment
(there is OH or NH grous in the vicinity), the distribution of certain types of interactions is slightly
different. Statistical analysis of S and Se interactions (criteria: d < 4.0 Å (for S) d < 4.5 Å (for Se),
Figure) showed the most numerous interactions with the H atom (in both cases about 47%), while
interactions involving C atoms (interactions with non-polar groups) are second in prevalence.
Interactions with non-polar C-H groups are slightly more numerous for Se (30%) than for S atom
(21%), while interactions with polar O-H and N-H groups are less numerous for Se (10% in total)
than in case of S atom (16% in total). Unexpectedly, the simultaneous interactions of X atom with
the S/Se atom and the polar OH/N-H group (H…X<3.5 Å) are only present in an amount of about
20%.
Results from docking study suggested that PBISe (Se compound) could be beter inhibitor of
iNOS (inducible nitric oxide synthase) than its S derivative (PBIT). All orientations of PBISe are
clustered at the same site (active site, Figure) leading to much better efficiency of this molecule
compared to PBIT, where three binding sites can be observed (Figure). This is in strong agreement
with experimental results pointing that PBISe kills melanoma cells >10−fold more effectively than
other iNOS inhibitors (PBIT).

AB - In this study, macroporous magnetic poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)/bentonite composite functionalized with hexamet-hylene diamine (SGE/MB-HD) was tested as potential Cr(VI) sorbent from aqueous solutions. The sorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were studied according to the data obtained in static experiments with different initial Cr(VI) concentration at room temperature and pH = 2.0. The Cr(VI) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with definite influence of pore diffusion. Desorption experiments show that chromium anion sorption was reversible and the SGE/MB-HD was easily regenerated with 0.1 mol/dm3 NaOH.

AB - Environmental poisoning due to the emission of waste silver electrical and electronic
industries, jewelry, photography and dentistry, in the last few decades has been of growing concern. The most effective methods for silver removal from aqueous media include electrolysis, precipitation, ion-exchange and adsorption. Highly crosslinked GMA-based polymers are chemically and mechanically stable materials containing reactive epoxy groups susceptible to undergoing functionalization, thus allowing the attachment of complexing agent selective for a specific metal ion.
In this presentation, macroporous chelating glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol
dimethacrylate copolymer functionalized with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta) was tested as Ag(I)
sorbent from aqueous solutions. The sorption kinetics was studied in batch experimental mode and
static conditions at room temperature and different initial Ag(I) concentration. The results were fitted to surface-reaction (pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order) and particle diffusion-based (intraparticle diffusion and Boyd’s) kinetic models.
The pseudo-second-order model provided the best fit for the kinetic data, with a definite
influence of pore diffusion. The maximum sorption capacity at pH 6 of 2.25 mmol g-1 (240 mg g-1)
was reached after 30 minutes. Equilibrium data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models.

AB - The mechanism of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions sorption from aqueous solutions by macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PGME) functionalized by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta) was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) were used for the determination of surface morphology of the copolymer particles. The sorption behavior of heavy metals Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions sorption was investigated in batch static experiments under non-competitive conditions at room temperature (298 K). The obtained results were fitted to pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic model. The kinetics studies showed that Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions with evident influence of pore diffusion.

abstract = "The mechanism of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions sorption from aqueous solutions by macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PGME) functionalized by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta) was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The kinetics studies showed that Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions with evident influence of pore diffusion.",

AB - Synthesis of an unconventional resin based on 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) and its Cu(II) sorption behavior were studied. Three samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P4VPE) with different porosity parameters were prepared by suspension copolymerization by varying the n-heptane amount in the inert component. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sorption of P4VPE for Cu(II) ions, determined under non-competitive conditions, was relatively rapid, i.e., the maximum capacity was reached within 30 min. The maximum experimental sorption capacity for the sample with the highest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 3, Q(eq) = 89 mg g(-1)) was 17.5 times higher than for the sample with the lowest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 1, Q(eq) = 5.1 mg g(-1)). Since the values for pyridine content in all P4VPE samples were almost the same, it was concluded that the porosity parameters have predominant influence on Cu(II) sorption rates on P4VPE. The sorption behavior and the rate-controlling mechanisms were analyzed using six kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, Bangham and Boyd models). XPS study clarified the nature of the formed P4VPE-Cu(II) species.
