AB - Liposome-encapsulated folic acid was incorporated into the films made from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) (2 mas%) and a mixture of carboxymethyl cellulose and solagum (9:1 w/w) using the film-forming cast solution method. Histidine was used to increase solubility for folic acid in liposomes (1-5 mg/ml), and propylene glycol was used as a film plasticizer (2.6 mas%). The obtained films (50-60 µm tick) containing 3.12-20.19 mg of folic acid per gram of film are envisaged to be used as patches for transdermal delivery of folic acid. Therefore, some physical, mechanical, release and structural attributes of the films were scrutinized. Folic acid gave yellow color to the films and contributed to stronger chemical bonds which resulted in improved strength of the film. Liposomes prolonged the release of folic acid from films to 24 h without adverse effects on mechanical properties of the films, but degraded homogeneity of the films, which could be ascribed to its agglomeration within the film matrix as revealed by AFM. According to the release at pH 5.5, the film formulation based on a blend of CMC and solagum containing 3 mg/ml liposome-encapsulated folic acid is recommended from the point of view of release kinetics determined by its solubility. Practical application: Folic acid is effective in reducing oxidative stress levels in the skin and neutralizing the harmful free radicals and is also essential for various metabolic reactions in the body. However, the limited solubility of folic acid linked with its poor absorption in an organism, low storage stability, short half-life upon oral consumption, specific food preferences of some people, extensive liver metabolism, and pregnancy-induced vomiting point to a large potential in transdermal usage of folic acid. This has motivated us to design new multicomponent polymer-lipid systems as an alternative solution to overcome some of these drawbacks. The results obtained for these multicomponent films pointed to their potential for prolonged release of folic acid to 24 h, which can also be useful for scientists interested in encapsulating similar poorly soluble compounds in CMC patches. The finding can be also valuable information for pharmaceutical manufacturers and scientists worldwide.

AB - Hydrated iridium oxyhydroxide (IrOx) films were electrochemically deposited from an alkaline oxalic solution at constant anodic potentials and by applying a potential cycling protocol, in both cases with variation of the electrodeposition time. From UV–vis spetroscopy of the solution for the deposition and their characterization it was concluded that a mixture of Ir(III)/Ir(IV) monomers participates in the deposition of IrOx film. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of IrOx films indicated that both types of films contained hydrated Ir(IV) hydroxide as the dominant species, but in the film deposited by potential cycling the presence of the additional Ir(III) species was evident. The scanning electon microscopy (SEM) analysis of the surface morphology revealed that films deposited by potential cycling were more uniform than the films deposited at a constant potential. The amount of electrochemically active Ir-species on the surface of deposited IrOx films was estimated from the voltammetric charge of the Ir(III)/Ir(IV) transition. Depending on the film electrodeposition parameters, the values between 15 and 1080 nmol cm−2 were obtained. The electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of IrOx films was calculated from cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and ranged from 3 to 131 cm2 per 1 cm2 of geometric surface area for various films. The activity and stability of IrOx films toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was investigated in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution under potentiostatic conditions. The intrinsic activity, stated as turnover frequency and specific current density normalized per ECSA, showed that the OER activity of IrOx films deposited by potential cycling are up to two and a half times higher than the activity of films deposited at a constant anodic potential. Potentiostatic stability test showed a decrease in OER current over time for both type of the films. Determination of ECSA, the amount of electroactive Ir species, XPS spectrum and SEM imaging after the test indicated that the decrease in OER activity was caused by partial dissolution and delamination of the film as well as by oxidation of highly active hydroxide Ir(III) species.

AB - In this study, development of folic acid-loaded liposomes using a basic amino acid, histidine as a solubilizing agent for folic acid was presented, which tackled the poor solubility of this vitamin. The effect of the liposomal membrane modifiers, cholesterol and SPAN 20 on the characteristics of the final formulations was examined. Liposomes prepared from a commercially available purified soybean lecithin (Phospholipon 90G) by proliposome method were between 503 and 877 nm in average diameter, where cholesterol induced enlargement and SPAN.20 reduction of vesicles. High encapsulation efficiency of 84% and drug loading of 0.123 mg g−1 were achieved, irrespective to the composition. According to AFM images, folic acid-loaded liposomes of a fraction with a nano size were flattened compared to globular empty liposomes. FTIR analysis revealed possible interactions between phospholipids and histidine, while DSC study suggested interactions between folic acid and lipids during heating. Release study done by a Franz diffusion cell showed prolonged release of folic acid from liposomes and the release rate was determined by folic acid solubility.

AB - This work was focused on the synthesis of polyurethane networks (PUNs) based on
polycaprolactone (PCL) as soft segment (SS) and Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched
polyester of the second pseudo generation and 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate
(MDI) as the parts of the hard segments (HS), by a two-step solution polymerization.
In order to find the best ratio between HS and SS to achieve good thermal
and mechanical properties, suitable hydrophobicity and morphology of the PUNs,
various experimental analyses were conducted. The obtained results revealed that
features of the PUNs highly depend on the PCL content. The increase in the PCL
content leads to the increase in thermal stability, hydrophobicity and appearance of
the microphase separation, but on the other side, it also leads to the decrease in storage
modulus in the rubbery plateau, crosslinking density and glass transition temperatures
of PUNs. This work shows that features of PUNs can be easily adjusted for
a specific application by careful selection of the SS and HS ratio.

AB - A series of environmentally friendly polyurethane (PU) networks based on polycaprolactone as soft segment (SS) and Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation as crosslinking agent was prepared by a two-step polymerization in solution. The chemical structure of the PU networks was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, while XRD analysis revealed that these samples are amorphous. Swelling measurements, water absorption study, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical tests and scanning electron microscope revealed that, swelling behavior, hydrophobicity, thermal and mechanical features and morphology of PU networks show clear dependence on polycaprolactone content. The increase of the SS content induced appearance of the microphase separated morphology, increase of thermal stability, elongation at break, hydrophobicity and swelling ability in tetrahydrofuran and toluene, but at the same time it is responsible for the decrease of crosslinking density, glass transition temperatures, rigidity, tensile strength and Young’s modulus of PU networks. Scanning electron microscope images of the fracture surfaces of PU networks show that their surface is rough, irregular, with flake-like structure, where size of flakes increases with increasing SS content. These results indicate that by choosing adequate SS content, PU coatings with diverse features based on polycaprolactone and Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched polyester can be designed for appropriate and desired application

AB - Composites based on unsaturated polyester (UPe) resins and fumed silica AEROSIL® RY 50, NY 50, RX 50 and NAX 50, as well as graphite, TiO2 or organically modified clay CLOISITE 30B were prepared in order to investigate the influence of reinforcing agents on the mechanical properties of composites. Unsaturated polyester resins were synthesized from maleic anhydride and products of glycolysis, obtained by depolymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with dipropylene glycol (UPe1 resin) and triethylene glycol (UPe2 resin) in the presence of tetrabutyl titanate catalyst. The obtained unsaturated polyesters were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, acid and hydroxyl values, and their mechanical properties were also examined. Significant increase of the tensile modulus, tensile strength and decrease of the elongation at break was observed for composites prepared after addition of 10 wt.% of graphite or 10 wt.% of TiO2 to the UPe resins, indicating strong interaction between matrix and filler particles. On the other hand, nanocomposites prepared using UPe2 and hydrophobically modified silica nanoparticles showed lower tensile strength and tensile modulus than polymer matrix. The presence of CLOISITE 30B had no significant influence on the mechanical properties of UPe1, while tensile strength and tensile modulus of UPe2 increased after adding 10 wt.% of clay.
