AB - Materials held within mine tailings pose a serious risk to the environment in cases of tailings dam failure. Collapse of the tailing dam at the Stolice antimony mine in West Serbia caused a spilling of tailing slurry into the nearby river watersheds. Medium-term effects of As, Pb, Sb, Zn, and Cd from the tailings material that remained in the flooded zone 3 years after the initial exposure were evaluated. Mobility of these elements was determined by analyzing their distribution between exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable, and residual phases. Results indicate that Fe-Mn oxides represent important sinks for As, Cd, Pb, and Sb. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed that concentrations of the analyzed elements were related to sand-sized fractions, as they tended to adsorb or co-precipitate as coatings on larger particles (particularly feldspar and quartz) upon the change of redox conditions. Assessment of the most relevant physico-chemical factors, metal(loid) concentration, and mobility can be used as tool to characterize the degree of contamination of impacted sites. Percentage of sand-sized particles, content of investigated metal(loid)s, and their amount in the reducible fractions are factors determining the best remediation techniques for the area impacted by tailing spill.

AB - Cyanobacterial blooms have become common all over the world, negatively affecting various ecosystem components. Planktothrix rubescens is a planktonic cyanobacterium that frequently causes blooms in temperate (mostly mesotrophic) lakes in Europe and, unlike other cyanobacteria, it is usually associated with ecosystem re-oligotrophication. The potential effects of P. rubescens on periphyton development have not been estimated in any recently published studies. The objective of the present paper was to assess how a Planktohrix rubescens bloom affects periphyton development in a temperate freshwater reservoir. A field study was performed in the Vrutci reservoir (western Serbia), where P. rubescens blooms have occurred since December of 2013. Periphyton was grown on glass slides that were incubated following lake stratification and sampled monthly from July to October of 2015. Dry mass, ash free dry mass and content of chlorophyll a, as well as composition of the community of developed periphyton, were estimated, together with P. rubescens biomass in the water column at the particular depths where substrates for periphyton were incubated. The metalimnetic bloom of P. rubescens induced calcite precipitation on the incubated substrates, which was reflected in obstructed colonization. The periphyton community composition was mainly determined by the depth gradient, which was potentially related to reduced light availability driven by shading effects caused by the P.rubescens bloom. Our results provide a significant update on periphyton ecology in relation to cyanobacterial blooms, elucidating complex interactions in the ecosystem. They also represent a stimulus for further studies on the capacity of P. rubescens for induction of calcium carbonate precipitation in lakes.

AB - The Đetinja River is located in western Serbia and it was dammed for creating an artificial Lake Vrutci. Epilithic samples were collected during 11 season (September, October and December 2014, March, April, May, June, July, August, September and October 2015) and were scraped from the stones by brush. Permanent slides were observed by Zeiss AxioImagerM.1 microscope with DIC optics and AxioVision 4.8 software. The relative abundance of diatoms were estimated by counting 400 valves of each taxa present at every permanent slide. The biological assessment of water quality was performed using diatom indices calculating by OMNIDIA 5.3 software.
Total of 113 diatom taxa have been recorded in the studied samples. Achnanthidum minutissimum was abundantly developing in mass and predominating over the other diatoms in almost all season. Next to A. minutissimum Amphora inariensis, A. pediculus, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata, Gomphonema olivaceum, Nitzsschia amphibia and N. fonticola were dominant or subdominant in the community. The results of a diatom indices analysis show the good to very good ecological status of the Đetinja River in the investigated period. Organic pollution was absence as opposed to anthropogenic eutrophication. In almost all season anthropogenic eutrophication was low except in March where anthropogenic eutrophication was moderate. In March Gomphonema olivaceum was dominant taxa in the community. G. olivaceum is β-mesosaprobous, eutraphentic species.
The Đetinja River was characterized by high species diversity and good to very good ecological status which matches with the literature data, rivers and streams with low level of pollution are characterized by high species richness.

toku septembra i oktobra 2014. godine. Identifikovano je ukupno 84 taksona silikatnih algi.
Najveće populacije u okviru epilitske zajednice silikatnih algi u većini pritoka grade Cocconeis
placentula var. lineata i Achnanthidium minutissimum var. minutissimum. Rezultati
izračunavanja dijatomnih indeksa, uz pomoć softverskog paketa OMNIDIA, ukazuju da je
ekološki status vode većine ispitivanih pritoka odličan do dobar. Samo rezultati dijatomnih
indeksa za pritoke Simića potok, Konjski potok, Bioštanska Banja i neimenovanu pritoku
13 pokazuju prisustvo umerene antropogene eutrofikacije.
