AB - The main aim of this work is characterization of atmospheric aerosol using 11 stage cascade impactor. The first investigation of size-segregated sub-urban aerosols from the continental part of the Balkan peninsula in 11 fractions in the range of 0.0085 < Dp < 16 μm was performed from March 2012 to December 2013. Aerosols were measured at the Zeleno Brdo observatory (ϕ = 44°48’; λ = 20°28′–243 m above sea level), the highest landmark on the eastern side of Belgrade. Zeleno Brdo is surrounded by wooded vegetation and comprises of both southern facing rural and north-west orientated urban areas. About 70% of total aerosols are fine particles, belonging especially to the PM0.53–1.06 fraction which is found to be more pronounced in winter period. In this work, we applied tests of probability function models for three distributions: normal, log-normal and three-parameter Weibull, by comparing expected and observed values. We found that these models offer the possibility to determine whether the dominant emission source was the vicinity or distance of the measuring point. Results of this test could be a significant supplement to existing multivariate mathematical models for source apportionment, providing accurate estimation of the origin of emission sources and offering information on their position relative to the investigated area (local, regional or remote). In addition, the dependence of particle concentrations for each fraction investigated versus meteorological parameters was determined.

AB - Alkaline soda lakes are unique habitats found in specific geographic regions, usually with dry climate. The Carpathian Basin
is one of those regions very important for habitat and biodiversity conservation in Europe, with natural soda lakes found in
Austria, Hungary and Serbia. In comparison to other two countries from Central Europe, algal biodiversity studies of saline
soda lakes in Serbia are scarce. Lake Velika Rusanda has the highest measured salinity of all saline lakes in the Carpathian
Basin and there were no reports of its diatom species richness and diversity till now. We conducted 2-year investigation
programme to study biodiversity and seasonal dynamics of diatoms in this lake. A total of 27 diatom taxa were found, almost
all of them attached to reed and much less in benthos and plankton. Five new diatom species for Serbia were recorded, Craticula
halopannonica, Navicymbula pusilla, Hantzschia weyprechtii, Nitzschia thermaloides and Navicula staffordiae. The
last mentioned is new for Europe as well. Lake Velika Rusanda is inhabited mostly by alkaliphilous and halophilic diatoms.
Since diatoms are used as bioindicators in soda lakes, our results will improve their further application in ecological status
assessment of these fragile habitats in the Carpathian Basin.

AB - Species richness and diversity of diatoms inhabiting different niches (water column, sediment surface and submerged plants) as well ionic composition of water (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, SO42-, CO32-, HCO3-) were studied in the Velika Rusanda soda pan during two years (late spring 2017 and 2018). These analyses are part of the preliminary study of diatom communities in soda pans in Serbia. The analysis of ionic composition confirmed previous finding that water of Velika Rusanda belongs to Na–HCO3–SO4–Cl chemical type. In 2017, a total of 15 taxa were identified, 5 in plankton and 14 in epiphytic community. In plankton the most abundant were Craticula halophila (36.25%) and Anomoeoneis sphaerophora (27.25%), while among epiphytic dominates Surirella brebissonii var. kuetzingii (46.25%). In 2018, a total of 22 taxa were identified, 3 in plankton, 19 in epiphytic community, and 14 on artificial substrate (brick). In plankton we recorded only a few individuals. The most dominant taxon in epiphytic community was Nitzschia supralitorea (95%), which also prevailed on brick (66.98%). The only genus recorded in 2017 was Rhopalodia, while genera presented only in 2018 were: Cocconeis, Halamphora, Hantzschia, Humidophila and Planothidium. Of the total number of identified taxa three were newly recorded for Serbian diatom flora: Hantzschia weyprechtii Grunow, Navicymbulla pusilla (Grunow) Krammer and Nitzschia thermaloides Hustedt. The most of identified taxa are characteristic for marine or brackish waters, as well as different types of freshwaters with elevated to highly elevated electrolyte content. The results of this preliminary study will help better understanding of diatom communities in soda pans and their assessment for conservation and restoration measures in these ecosystems.

AB - The ionic content was examined in nine aqueous tea extracts in which time of boiling, acidification of the medium using lemon juice and way of preparation were observed as factors. Ion chromatography was used for determination of inorganic anion content, and data were processed using CANOCO program for multivariate analysis. The variations in ionic content were observed among different tea samples. The highest concentrations of chloride, nitrate, phosphate, and sulphate ions were found in nettle, while the highest concentrations of fluorides were detected in elderflower tea infusion. The effect of boiling time (5, 10, and 20 min), acidification of the medium and different preparation procedure (boiling and cooling at room temperature) were statistically presented using principal component analysis. The examined factors did not have a significant effect on the ionic concentration in tea infusions.

AB - We have measured trace element contents in suburban aerosols from six size fractions in the range of PM0.27-16 from a background station in Belgrade (Serbia). The distribution and concentration of elements were determined within each of the investigated Dp fractions with emphasis on the fine and coarse modes. Fine/coarse mode ratios of element can provide information regarding their anthropogenic or natural origin. Analysis of seasonal variations of element contents in fine and coarse mode show that Cd, Co, K, and V have higher concentrations in the fine mode during heating season, while Fe contents are lower. In the coarse mode, Cu and V have higher concentrations during the heating season, while Al, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Sb contents are lower. We also apply a distribution probability model (normal, log-normal, and three-parameter Weibull) as new approach to estimate the distances of emission sources that can contribute to pollutant contents in particulate matter of the investigated location.

AB - The results presented in this work demonstrate for the first time a distribution of elements in the spectral analysis of aerosols in the suburban continental Balkan Peninsula. Samples were collected in the suburban area of Belgrade (Serbia) in the period from March 2012 till December 2013. Results presented here are from long-term measurements of masses of size-segregated aerosols and macro- and microelements in the range of PM0.27-16. The following elements were analyzed: Al, Ag, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Ti, Tl, V, and Zn; levels of Be, Hg, and Se were under the detection limits in all samples. Average concentrations and time and seasonal variations of particulate matter (PM) as well as element contents and their percentage shares are given. The results showed the domination of particle content around the accumulation mode in the range of 0.53 LT Dp LT 1.06 mu m, but the fractional distribution of elements showed maximal average concentrations in different fractions depending on the origin of each element. Crustal elements (Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ti, etc.) dominated in coarse mode, while anthropogenic elements (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, etc.) were mainly distributed in fine mode fractions. Some elements, such are As and Ni, were detected in investigated aerosols only occasionally, while others, such as Ca, Fe, and Mg, were detected in all analyzed samples. The application of multivariate analysis (PCA) demonstrated the connection between the elements of similar origin, in fine fractions mainly of anthropogenic origin, while in coarse mode of crustal origin, indicating the resuspension with contribution of about 40%. The contents of some measured elements were compared with their contents in aerosols in some European suburban areas.

AB - The development and improvement of the monitoring system of rivers according to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is essential for all European states because assigning a wrong ecological status class (misclassification) to a water body can have significant economic consequences. In order to point out some of the key issues of WFD implementation in Serbia, we conducted a one-year study of the composition and abundance of diatoms in the phytobenthos in two streams, the Lasovacka and Lenovacka, in eastern Serbia. The physicochemical quality elements were also used in the assessment of their ecological status. The diatom community exhibited a higher species richness in the Lasovacka (88 taxa) than in the Lenovacka stream (63 taxa). Such a detailed study enabled us to record some of the rare taxa, e.g. Caloneis budensis in the Lasovacka, which was the first finding of this species in Serbia. The Lasovacka and Lenovacka streams were downgraded to moderate and poor ecological status, respectively, because of the high nitrogen load. Since the monitoring results based on the diatom indices resulted in the assignment of two streams to a good ecological status, the possible reason for the mismatch between the biological and physicochemical quality elements could be due to the lack of analysis of benthic invertebrate fauna or the application of diatom indices that are insufficiently sensitive to the specific environmental pressure. The results of this study show that conducting a comprehensive ecological investigation of rivers within the framework of the WFD in Serbia is urgently needed.

AB - The concentrations of iron, zinc, manganese, copper, chromium, nickel, lead, arsenic, and cadmium were determined using flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry in nine herbal tea samples. Hawthorn, yarrow, elderflower, and bearberry are herbal teas for which the metal content has been rarely determined. The concentration of cadmium in St John’s wort exceeded the maximum permissible limit of 0.3 mg/kg. The metals were also determined in aqueous extracts following 5, 10, and 20 min of boiling and using different preparations, including acidification with lemon juice. The influence of these factors on metal release was demonstrated using multivariate analyses by redundancy analysis and principal component analysis. The metal release was not considerably affected by the boiling time, while the acidity of the medium was generally positively correlated. For the infusions, arsenic was detected only in acidified mint tea. The extraction efficiencies of metals were determined and classified as highly, moderately, and poorly extractable, with chromium showing largest variations.

AB - Wastewater emissions into watercourses lead to the biological reactor’s formation, in which the processes of dilution and self-purification occured. The degree of dilution depends on the ratio of the stream water flow and wastewater volume, and considerations of the self-purification processes are focused on the oxygen balance, and for these reasons this parameter is due to be monitored in adoption of remedial measures. Based on the analytical methods for the determination of biological oxygen demand, it is difficult to consider the kinetic of biodegradation and determine the kinetic parameters required for the processes of self-purification of wastewater. Therefore, in this paper the application of some of the most common models that are available in the literature are presented, which are used in order to determine the coefficient of biodegradation. Graphically presented results and the calculated values of the coefficients of biodegradation indicate that the method of least squares, Fujimoto method and Thomas method, are models that can be efficiently applied to a specific method in the laboratory testing.

AB - Usled široke upotrebe ftalata u proizvodima za ličnu negu i proizvodima široke potrošnje, ljudska populacija postaje sve ugroženija usled izloženosti udisanjem, gutanjem i kontaktom preko kože.
AB - Due to the widespread use of phthalates in products for personal care and consumer products, general population becoming more vulnerable because of exposure through inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. Children's toys and childcare articles become more actual testing subjects, due to more rigorous European requirements and standards in terms of restrictions of potentially toxic chemicals. Cheap toys often pose a health risk for children and especially infants, because of released paint which often contain heavy metals and extremely dangerous phthalates that through the mucous membranes or sweat and saliva can get into the body. Their effects depend on dosage, duration of action and stage of development of the individual, thus making the fetus, newborn, and children the most vulnerable categories of population.
In this study, analysed results of the content of phthalates in products for children and infants were divided by certain groups, to facilitate drawing conclusions about their safety. Due to great importance, this kind of studies becoming more topical themes of national and international researches, projects and public advertising on the world level.

AB - In this paper, the main objective was fractionation of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Ca, Fe, and K in certificate material and sediment samples gathered from and around the Petrochemical Industry using the conventional, microwave and ultrasonic sequential extraction. Microwave oven and ultrasound bath were used as an energy source for achieving faster extraction. Additional heating and boiling of samples were avoided by using lower power and shorter time for microwave and ultrasound extraction. Precision and accuracy of procedure were evaluated by using certificate material (BCR701). Acceptable accuracy of metals (87.0-111.3 %) was achieved for all three-step sequential of conventional extraction protocol. An accuracy of the fourth step has been verified with two certificate materials: BCR143R and 146R. The range of total extracted metal concentrations from sediments was similar for all three extraction techniques. A significant high percentage of Cd, Cu, and Zn were obtained after extraction of the exchangeable and acid soluble sediment fraction. Principal component analysis of values obtained after determination of risk assessment code using conventional and ultrasound sequential extraction show similarity of these values. Accuracy, recovery, and risk assessment code values imply that ultrasound sequential extraction is a more suitable, accelerated sequential extraction procedure (30 min per extraction step) than microwave extraction in applied conditions.

AB - We use conventional, microwave and ultrasound assisted sequential extraction, of defined time and power, techniques for extractions of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn in sediments and certified material. We did not change the conditions of extractions through steps, cause we what to see is there difference in extraction results for the certified material and sediments. We use lower powers and time from microwave and ultrasound extraction in order to avoid additional heating and boiling of the samples. Steps 1-3 of the BCR (Community Bureau of Reference), excluding the hydrogen peroxide digestion in step 3, were completed in 16 h in the conventional, in 120 s with 90 W power of microwave and in 30 min of 42 kHz of an ultrasonic frequency. Digestion of organic matter with hydrogen peroxide was performed the same for all techniques. The fourth step, the pseudo-total content, was performed the same on samples remaining after performing the extraction of the previous three phases either conventionally, microwave-assisted or with ultrasound. The precision and accuracy of the proposed procedures were evaluated using a certified reference material BCR701. Acceptable accuracy for most of the metals was observed for all three steps of BCR protocol applying a 16 h total shaking period. Metals were determined with an acceptable accuracy after the pseudo-total step; expect Cr. Results obtained after the application of different techniques on sediments were comparable with ANOVA test for the 95 % of confidence level.
