AB - Selenium (Se) is an essential trace elements for animals and humans, but not for
plants. The quantity of Se in food and feed is strongly dependent on the concentration in
plants, that is the main source of selenium, for humans and animals. The uneven
distribution and availability of soils Se imply that different areas of the world are
characterized, from the point of human and animal nutrition, as Se-deficient, Se-adequate
or Se-toxic areas.

Analizirani su indeksi antioksidativnog statusa eritrocita, sadržaj glutationa i antioksidativnih enzima (glutationperoksidaze i reduk- taze, katalaze i superoksidne dizmutaze). Takođe je ispitan efekat oskidativnih radikala na metabolizam hemoglobina i ugljenih hidrata. Određena je aktivnost methemoglobin reduktaze i sadržaj hemoglobinskih derivata.
AB - Free radicals are extremly reactive chemical species. Damaging various biomolecules, enzymes, cell membranes they have a potential role in many pathological processes. Exposition to aromatic organic solvents may lead to increase generation of free radicals. The effect of aromatic organic solvents and generated free radicals on erythrocyte metabolism are investigated. The indices of antioxidant status in erythrocytes, glutathione and antioxydant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and reductase, catalase and superoxidismutase) were investigated. The effect of oxidative radicals upon hemoglobin and carbohydrate metabolism was investigated too. Hemoglobin modifications and derivatives, as well as activity of methemoglobin reductase was analysed as well as the activities of key anzyrnes of pentose phosphate shunt.

AB - The effects of supplementation with selenous yeast and ionizing radiation on selenium (Se) content and distribution were evaluated in rat tissues (liver, kidney, spleen, heart, muscle, blood, front brain, hind brain, hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal glands, testes, and hair). This study had 16 Se-supplemented (0.5 μg Se/d) and 16 placebo adult male Wistar rats. One half of the animals (eight Se-supplemented and eight placebos) were irradiated with a single dose of 4.2 Gy from a Co-60 source and sacrificed 7 d after irradiation along with nonirradiated animals and analyzed for Se content determination. The data obtained showed that selenous yeast supplementation increased Se levels in rat tissues (highest increases in hypothalamus, 161%; hind brain, 126%; spleen, 110%; and adrenal gland, 105%). Ionizing radiation induced significant changes in Se content and distribution (decrease in liver, blood, hair, femoral muscle, spleen, and hypothalamus; increase in kidney, testes, adrenal glands, and brain of placebo group). Supplementation with selenous yeast reduces changes in Se content and distribution after irradiation. It seems that the animal tissue susceptibility to oxidative damage may be correlated to their ability to retain Se in tissues.

AB - The aim of this work was the investigation of the influence of ionizing radiation on the erythrocyte antioxidant system and metabolism. The erythrocyte antioxidative enzymes, GSH/GSSG ratio, as well as selenium concentrations were analysed in the same time with the main enzyme involved in carbohydrate and hemoglobin metabolism. The amounts of hemoglobin derivatives and modifications were investigated, too. The analysis was performed using erythrocytes of a group of patients with cancer bring exposed to ionizing radiation or not as well as healthy control in same conditions.
On the basis of results the inhibitory effects of ionizing radiation upon near all enzyme activities were detected as well as the corresponding alterations in efficiency of antioxidant system, carbohydrate and hemoglobin metabolism.
